Alabama Schools Thread Part 2!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
31N, 3.5 overall, 3.3 science, (significant upward trend for both though, 3.65 for junior year for both overall and science, and 4.0 senior year for both), semester of research, no pubs, usual volunteering and shadowing

Bah. I checked mine just now. Still "Campus Choices Received".

WiseGuy-you've done really great for yourself! I hope you get called up with Veej!

Darren-LOVE IT!

Have any of you previous applicants been wait listed before? If so what tier were you on? I heard from someone that usually most first-tiers get brought in with the exception of that one year... Have you known and middle or bottom tiered people to get in?

Will everyone who finds out any news post their stats, if they feel comfortable doing so, so we can see how we compare to others.

Last year, didn't get an interview and was flat-out rejected pre-secondary. I have no clue how things work... its a craptastic shotgun in my opinion. For the most part, deserving and sincere people lose. And the people that you'd never want to be your own doctor, somehow win...

So what do you think helped you Veej? The masters in medical science classes? Or did you do one of those rejection interviews to see what they wanted you to work on?

This is my second application. I first applied three years ago. I *think* I was put in the middle third. I stayed there until official rejections went out to those of us on the waitlist. Not sure how many came off the list to acceptances that year-- it does vary.

You gotta love this statement...really warms your heart

While your specific place on the list will not be revealed, we can inform you that you are in the lower third of the Alternate List. In recent past years it has been rare that individuals ranked at this level have gained an acceptance to the incoming class.

I'm considering either:

1) applying to the rural program
2) staying at UAH for more science classes
3) getting some non-medical job and traveling (no medical jobs for French majors)
4) starting a second bachelor's in nutrition because I think it's interesting

I also need to retake the MCAT...

*Edit*
I'm also considering living on the beach for a year and doing nothing, lol.

Surely you will at least be waitlisted! I mean, you've worked so hard improving! They can't reject you!

..damn. That's harsh. I'm sorry...

Well this is what mine says for middle third:

While your specific place on the list will not be revealed, we can inform you that you are in the middle third of the Alternate List. In recent past years some individuals ranked at this level have gained an acceptance. Currently the class is over-subscribed and it is possible it will be May before any alternate is accepted.

Out of curiosity, what does the email say for those in the upper third?

So what do you think helped you Veej? The masters in medical science classes? Or did you do one of those rejection interviews to see what they wanted you to work on?

I never did one of those interviews officially. I went up to Case Western when I was visiting my brother (he goes there for school) and had a 1:1 with some random assistant dean. He looked over my primary and went over everything negative, saying any one of these could have contributed. It equated to my MCAT was not extremely competitive, my GPA was not extremely competitive, I seeemed immature on paper, and um... I think that was it.

So, what changed since my first application:
- massive re-working of my primary. Upon looking at my first time, my personal statement was absolutely garbage and was simply a rehash of my stats. This time, I wrote a story about a meangingful experience that happened to me one time when I was doing clinical research in a hospital. It was not an experience that determined I wanted to go into medicine (never had any of those). But just something I could write a story about. I did not include dates or lists of awards and experiences. It was simply a moving and descriptive story and WHY it meant something to me and what I took away from that experience. Quite a few interviewers told me great things about that personal statement
- currently in a M.A. of Medical Science at Loyola University Chicago. I think this prog really helps, esp when you've been out of school for a bit (I grad in 2007) or need a boost to the grades. 50-some kids in the prog this year, all of us are re-applicants either now or will be next year. Those currently applying, I'd say 50% have acceptances to some school. One guy is holding 14 acceptances (more about him later). Does the program work? I have no definitive iea, but I'd like to think that my $30k was well-spent (I have 1 acceptance so far).
- continued w/ the volunteering

Last application cycle:
- 2 interviews, 1 waitlist, lots of rejections by Jan.
- This time, 9 interviews, 1 acceptance, 2 waitlist, only 1 rejection so far.

The guy that is holding 14 acceptances: He used an application service that "helped" him work on his primary and every secondary. He had 14 acceptances and 15 interviews by Dec 2008. Last application, he had a couple of interviews, but only 1 waitlist and mostly rejections pre-interview. And this kid is a poster child of awesome.

So what is the ideal mix? I'd say it depends on what school you're trying for and such. I would definitely meet with the dean of UAB and see what he says. For me (and in my eyes), my undergrad GPA (a couple of C's and D's) really hurt me and so I wanted to pick that up a bit. I would definitely use an application service if I were to reapply (they are definitely expensive, but I feel they warrant it).

Also, I've never had my heart set on going to a particular school. If I were however, then I'd reapply EDP to that school. Also, see what would make you competitive at that school. If it requires retaking the MCAT, seriously think about it. If it requires a higher GPA (or if you graduated more than 1 yr ago), take some classes. Or maybe your primary app just didn't sell you to the degree it could have.

so it seems,
lower = "few"
middle = "some"
upper = "many"

Thanks for all the info...

I know my awesome 25Q was my biggest problem, although because I'm Native American I thought it would off-set it some. I do have a good personal statement, although it's only because I did the UAB summer program and learned how to write one. I'm still in school, sort of. I won't graduate until May but am done with my degree. I took my last required class at UAH during the fall. I actually emailed my program person for advice yesterday (because she wanted to know the outcome) but I haven't heard back yet. I'm debating calling, but I don't want to seem pathetic and desparate.

I forgot to say that both of my GPA's are about 3.5.

Alternate list middle third. E-mail sent at 11:32 AM. At least not a rejection.

Wow, you have a really good profile Presto. Sorry you didn't get better news...

Surely you will at least be waitlisted! I mean, you've worked so hard improving! They can't reject you!

I have a few things running against me. My application went in late-ish in the cycle, and then one of my LORs didn't go in until the first week of January, despite incessant polite reminders from me. I'm a non-trad, older than most of you applicants, and with a fairly weak GPA (3.2 BCPM, 3.3 everything).

Yes, I have worked hard to improve, and I've come a long way. However, there are a lot of smart, experienced, dedicated people applying. Competition is fierce. So, yes, they can reject me, and they can also put me low on the waitlist. And if they do, I'll redouble my efforts and come back with an even stronger application. There is no doubt in my mind that I will go to medical school and I will become a doctor.

(gettin' lots of photobucket mileage today...)

Send some of that Whoop-Ass to your sister for me, will you? She can pass it on next time she sees me. Or maybe I need a can of Kick-in-the-Ass...

Well, my status page still says interview complete-remain under consideration, even though I've received an email about the alternate list. Hopefully it'll be updated soon.

game over - lower third.

third time applying + doing everything they asked = no thx!

so excited right now!

Sorry VanBrown, that's ridiculous.

I am completely at a loss right now of what I need to do for next year.

Seems like UAB's average MCAT score for this years applicants must have been upper 30's lower 40's. 👎

Now I'm just holding out hope for South...

What do you guys think about those of us who have no status change online and haven't received an email?

Or those of us with a 3/18 status change and no news. It likely means nothing is my best guess...

Not to be a Debby Downer, but it seems like everyone received their alternate list emails this morning around 11:00.

Does anyone know how many applicants are placed on the alternate list? I remember Dean Smith saying that it had 90 people on it last year, and that 81/90 got accepted somewhere but only around 21 got picked up by UAB. 90 seems like a very large number, and if it is that big, I doubt many middle tiers will get picked up. I want to say from years past only 60 were on the list, but I dont know.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking... I wondered if they notified the whole waitlist at once. Gosh, how am I ever supposed to get anything done when all this is going on?

I'd call that being a realist. I just wish they would send the damn rejections out already...

I think 81/90 is correct. So what that's saying is that 9/90 didn't get in anywhere. It's safe to say that everyone who is waitlisted this year (according to this thread) has no other acceptances. I'm not sure if that's a bad thing, meaning all of those who are top-third will accept the offer and no one from the middle third will get accepted, or a good thing, meaning that UAB has only accepted stellar applicants so far and that a lot of places will open up.

Looks like the big boys heard me. Just got my rejection email. To be honest, I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet. I know I'll be retaking my MCAT and doing something to raise my GPA. I may do an SMP or I just might start on a masters here at UAB. I'd like to talk to Dean Smith first to hear what he thinks. You?
