Any 27-29 MCAT with interviews????

Most of my luck might have something to do with TMDSAS. I interviewed Texas Tech Lubbock, Texas Tech El Paso, TCOM, and Texas A&M (Sept17). Also, Touro Nevada, DMU, AZCOM, and West Virginia D.O. schools. I applied to M.D. schools in Ohio and Michigan but haven't heard anything from them yet so its sort of a mixed bag. I feel lucky but people get in with worse numbers right?

Wow, I think that you have some amazing credentials. I am a 27 year old non-trad too but I have about 1/10th as many degrees. That is going to take you a long way my friend. What states are you applying in/to?

Thanks for the compliment, DocMcCoy. Yes, I'm a 26 year old non-trad. Like I said, I didn't have a good college GPA, and my only decent grad. school GPA was for my MBA, which was 3.44.

I've found that non-trads like us have a very difficult time being looked at as worthy by most med. schools. There are only a small percentage of schools that look at us favorably for our graduate education or post-undergrad work, experiences, etc.

As a result, I've applied to all of the "best" schools (some of these are actually more open-minded than "mid-tier" schools, as 98% of their applicants/acceptances will keep the schools' stats high when reported to ranking agencies), as well as all of the schools in my state and in regions of the country where I'd like to live during med. school, allopathic and osteopathic schools included. I think I've applied to more schools than anyone on this forum...wait for it...75+!! I am fortunate to have access to the financial resources to submit this many applications, and due to my application have realized that with even this many applications I'll fill probably 30-40 secondaries for 5 or 6 interviews and 1-2 acceptances.

Please let me know if any of you think I'm totally off base with these predictions. Also, please let me know if you think certain schools would be more favorable to applications from people like DocMcCoy and me.

Finally, many of you may ask "why all the education"? It's a long story, but it was all planned ahead of time to help me build up to becoming a physician and getting involved in the AMA to help shape health care policy. I'd really like to help people not only on an individual level, but also on a larger scale.

I look forward to all of your comments, and hope the rest of you aren't as worried as I am about getting in to the right place!

since you have an interview I would say at this point stats matter a lot less and your personality takes center stage.

Yes I am an AA female. I am a nontrad student as well, graduated in 2006 (Nursing). GPA 3.6 maybe, sGPA3.99. I have/had 2 interviews at Texas state schools; UTH and Texas tech, Univ of Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson), U conn, NYMC. I am hoping for a few more. By God's grace I will get a few acceptances.

Look on MD Apps... alot of people that get acceptances and interviews with sub 30 aren't urms.. I actually think it's a fallacy that you need a 30+ to have reasonable chance at admissions. Though a 30+ will definitely help. Most people I know that were admitted had sub 30's. They weren't URMs. Though they did have really high gpas and good ECs. Remember, schools post average MCATs for accepted students.. meaning there are some above and some below.

Having said that... I have a 28Q 9PS 10VR 9BS and 3 interviews so far.

Hmmm and what if you're Canadian with a 29S (overall GPA above 3.65, science GPA around 3.55 and non science GPA above 3.75)? Anyone heard of any Canadians getting into US schools with such a score? My breakdown was: 10PS 9VR and 10BS.... would the S of the writing sample compensate for the VR???

Well apparently some schools consider us as International applicants and others consider us as out of state applicants ... I don't know anymore than that though.

I just wanted to point out that, at least in the MSAR, schools report median MCAT score, which could be quite different from the average MCAT score.
For example, say a school accepts 10 students, 6 of them have a 10 on the VR section and 4 have a 15... the median VR score for accepted applicants is 10 but the average would be 12.

you know i thought my mcat would kill me as i had a 29 but really things are going great. I have 4 interviews so far, im not a minority in fact im azn, not non-trad really, and im a cali resident so no state school that will give me an "easy" invite. I just want to say keep up hope guys...my mcat sucks and so far things are going well for me. Hope its the same for all of you 🙂. I dont believe that you have to be URM, non-trad, or anything like that, that someone else said.

I agree, the key is to apply early. Just to illustrate the difference, I applied during the 2007 cycle with a .04 higher cGPA and a .06 higher in sGPA and the same MCAT score (except a writing grade of P in 2007 in comparision to an M now) In 2007, I just received one interview from Downstate that became a rejection. So far, this year I applied to the same number of schools, I have two 2 interviews from very respectable schools, back to back, next week, one rejection from a school that I wouldn't want to go anyway given a better choice, and 4 holds. I am aiming for 5 interviews, it is very possible. Good luck to the fellow sub-30 MCAT applicants!

First of all let me make it clear that I greatly admire your drive and all of the time and effort you've put into your training. I wish you the best of luck and congrats on your interview. Now to play devils advocate a little bit...

I've gotta be honest, all the degrees hardly changes the 3.0 UG GPA, 27 MCAT you are bringing to the table. These are the only means by which med schools can compare you to the other (i.e. Trad) applicants and you are FAR below average even considering the extra-currics. Ever consider re-writing the MCAT? How about an SMP to show that you can handle a Med school curriculum?

Not true at all. I am also a non-trad and this is my experience thus far. I am a clinical research coordinator at one of the top US hospitals and I know for a fact that my work experience is a HUGE BOOST for med school apps. Every previous CRC/ other CRCs I work with have gotten into solid MD programs thanks to invaluable clinical experience/ reccs. Doesn't hurt that my PI is on admissions at HMS either. Not trying to toot my own horn here (or even imply that I'd ever have a chance at Harvard) but you have to know the right people and gather the right experience for post-undergrad work to make any difference. How does a Law school or a business degree prepare you for a career in medicine? I respect your ultimate career aims but most people get these degrees after an MD in order to advance or supplement their medical degree.

As I mentioned before, you kind of went about doing this backwards. I've met several MD's who were fed-up with the healthcare system/administration after experiencing it FIRST HAND and set out to get an MBA/MPH, etc. and make a difference. Also, in your case, given the degrees you already have you probably don't need a medical degree to become involved with the AMA and shape health care policies. In fact, I'm pretty sure the MPH/PhD would be MORE than enough to do this. It comes off a little bit like you may just be after another title...

Lastly, I could be off but if I were on an admissions committee and I see someone apply with this many degrees my first thought is exactly this:

A. This guy has no idea what he wants to do with his life.

B. This guy is constantly changing his mind. What is to say he will like medicine once it is all said and done?


This is me straight shooting/ procrastinating when I should be writing an abstract. Not trying to discourage or start trouble. I sincerely hope you get into med school and achieve your goals. Perhaps my advice can help some if it doesn't happen for you this time around.
 
As an addendum to my previous post, I just noticed that you mentioned both MD and DO schools. I should point out that my mind thinks only in terms of MD and that the comments in my post are geared as such. Also, given that this is an Allo forum, I guess I just assumed that was your goal. From what I know of DO admissions you should be a very competitive applicant.

I like your chances to get into one of those schools but I'd say a lot of it depends on your extra curriculars. If you have solid EC's all of these schools are within reach considering your nice GPA and respectable MCAT.

Based on your choices it seems like you are a PA resident which will help immensely at PSU given that last year they interviewed 26% of in-state applicants as opposed to under 10% OOS.

27Q, 3.92 gpa...on my way to my 1st interview at Albert Einstein tomorrow, with Drexel next month and West Virginia, so far! We are not just numbers (well, maybe at some schools...lol!). We just may hear a little later than the high stat people...:xf:
 
28M, 3.64 and already had two interviews from allo. schools (both during the first possible day of interviews at each), not URM. Don't lose hope.

Does anyone know of any med schools that take your best MCAT subscores? I've taken the darn test twice with a resulting score of...wait for it...26N...both times. My best subscores would give me a 29N, which is definitely better, but not golden.

I'm hoping my being a non-trad URM helps...but who knows what else the adcoms are looking for. 😕

Hopefully I'll receive more interview invites. only time will tell.

I just wanted to say I love this thread ( real <3 ). This is an amazing inspiration to keep moving forward. And good luck to those above who have received interviews and have yet to attend or hear back!!!!
 
Just a little FYI - my stats were very similar to yours (albeit a bit lower, actually) and I am currently at an allopathic school.

I have an interview at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) tomorrow. I am currently under review for 9 other schools, TCOM just finished the reviewing quickly.

I am pretty new here and not sure how much is too much to reveal, but:

a private in the east
a public in the south
a TX school
AZ x 2 (OOS)
 
You guys can do it! I was in your boat earlier posting in this same thread.

I was just accepted through early decision to my state MD school.

I had 3.63 CGPA, 3.58 CGPA, and 28R MCAT (actually 26R, 24Q, 26Q and my school took the highest subscores giving me a 28R).

I'm not a URM, older applicant, or anything. I am 22 and a reapplicant, though.

How did I get in? My ECs. I had amazing ECs this year. Plus, since I interviewed there last year and was waitlisted, this year's interviews went flawlessly since I knew what to expect.

When you have a lower MCAT, your interviews are huge. It's all about selling yourself, selling your strengths, etc. Find out exactly what a school is looking for. Every school looks for something different. I know of many unsuccessful reapplicants to this school. I was successful because I played the game, did the research on the school, and basically knew how to get myself in haha.

I have 3 interview invites with very low GPAs but two year post bacc gpa that is pretty good. 28 MCAT, 8, 10, 10. I wish I would have applied to some more of the private schools like NYMC, Tulane, and then U of A but I didn't realize that they opened up to other state students. I would have loved to go to Tucson hah. Oh well, only need one acceptance and on my way to my second interview. Good luck.

I interviewed at NYU last cycle with a 15.

Crazy....obviously rejected. Not URM, just lucky. Got hounded about it at the interview, though.


Anyone know if most schools take the best scores of each section?
