Any Illinois applicants out there?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm applying to Illinois, still gotta do their supplemental essay though!

Yeah, I submitted my VMCAS already, but I'm still working on my supplemental. I'm still a little iffy about that essay of mine!

Yeah, it's pretty weird. I have no idea how to even start it.

I am applying there too! I am just trying to whittle down my VMCAS PS to the 5000 character limit. I kind of started the U of I essay but am far from done.🙁

This will be my second application cycle. I don't apply anywhere else.

I am definitely applying to Illinois!

Their supplemental essay seems like it should be straightforward, but I've found it challenging to complete. I started by cutting and pasting different things I found on the internet about job opportunities in veterinary medicine into a word file. I then printed everything out and looked for major themes, and using the info I found as a starting place for ideas, I'm trying to build up some kind of essay about the importance of veterinarians in the public health arena, and how that's going to continue to be very important in the future... I kind of feel like I'm making it up as I go along, but in some ways it's a nice break from just writing about me, me, me...

Good luck, everyone!

Their question is sort of a hot-button topic in all of the vet med magazines lately. Ask your DVM for some of his journals and mags from recent months ... you'll get good info there!!

Does it matter if my response is a page and a half? The guidelines say it should be approximately a page. It is hard to narrow my letter down further since, I have already removed a ton of information that I think is essential to the topic!

Mine is also a little over. It ended up being over a page just by a short paragraph and I decided to leave it. If they really wanted us to keep them short, they should have given a character limit or something...

Thanks elefante7! I think I am going to leave mine the way it is.🙂

I actually had the easiest time with this essay--I thought it was fun! Much better than trying to figure out what my passion is (I mean, honestly, passion is such a strong word!) for NCSU!

finished the U of I supplemental! woo! good luck everyone!

I am still worried about mine being over the page limit. :help:Did all of you stick to the one page limit?

I think mine was probably longer; what's one page? I didn't get any errors when I cut / pasted / saved it, so hopefully it's okay.

Mine was a little over a page. It was a little less than a page and a half. But I figured that if they look at it, it probably will print out differently than the margins that I have set up on MS Word. Besides, it says "approximately one page." Not maximum is one page. So I think that as long as you didn't write a 10 page essay, and actually needed the extra lines to convey your point, you're probably fine.

Just finished the supplemental essay..took 7 hours..but its DONE :hardy:
Mine was a little over a page ....if its a full second page I'd cut it down to at least a page and a half to be safe 😉 No worries =)

Good Luck everyone! I hope we all get in. 😍

Another Illinois applicant here, woo! Out of state, but I know someone who got accepted last year who was out of state and sort of went to the same college as me (another claremont college) so that gives me some hope! Good Luck everyone!

MALHI--After that last test you better be studying your organic chem and not watching the Family Guy marathon again!

Lol, Sundog!!! Organic Chemistry exams and applications sure don't mix.👎

Good luck to everyone! I hope to attend U of I and I know that being IS is a huge advantage but I'm not sure if I'll be competitive enough in terms of broad animal experience (I have only worked with companion animals, exotics, wildlife, cattle, swine, and horses but have limited poultry, sheep, avian, marine, etc. experience), among other things.

Do you know the stats for IS students applying and getting accepted?

I don't have the current stats. The admissions office might be able to help you if you call or email them.

You sound like you have a wide range of animal experience under your belt. Sounds like you have covered way more than I have! I couldn't get any production animals🙁.

Were any of these veterinary related? Which I think counts for more than animal experience.

I think if one has a competitive GPA and GRE one has an excellent chance of getting in (because of their merit list of 300 students).

Thanks!

Well, all of them are veterinary experience except for the horses and swine.

My academics are pretty solid, so I'm not worried about that. It's moreso my experiences that I'm worried about. But I don't want to worry, so I'm trying not to obsess about it.
