I think I've almost had it w/this science stuff...ok, maybe not but it's a close call.

For those of you who don't know, I am a 2nd time applicant, my DAT was 18/17 and gpa/sci was 3.0/2.7. I am doing a postbacc to improve my grades...after I applied to dental school the first time, I also happened to take organic lab and redo gen chem my senior year and got B's in both. Now I am in my postbacc year taking organic I (retake), microbio and biochem I this semester. My grades in Organic and microbio are decent right now, but biochem is a different story. I got a couple of pts below the avg for the first test, the second test I just got back and got 10pts below the avg! My grade was much better on the second test, but the avg went up 20pts! I am not trying to squirm my way out, but it sucks when most of the students in my class are only taking biochem and working, so they only study for one class, and many of them have old tests from the prof's through friends. ENOUGH complaining, suppose I get a C+ in biochem but still manage to get good grades in organic and microbio...you think I'll still have a chance or am I ruined now because of this class and it's my postbacc year? Even if I ruined it, I have to still be determined/motivated to kick ass next semester and cross my fingers when I reapply? ARGH. Any inspiration...I wish I had a more suppportive environment around me (aka, people believing in me)...I just can't give up though <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

You are not alone trust me. The fact that you are taking more than one science class shows that you are determined and that you can handle a tough curriculum. Dont give up and the semestar is not over.

One word of advice ....talk to your professors and tell them that the dental schools are considering you and its very important that you at least pull a B in biochem. Tell the professor that you will do whatever it takes. If that does not work than just tell him/her that if you show a drastic improvemnt on the final will they take that into consideration. That usually works. Trust me if you want this you will get it. Good luck and try to keep your head above the water..everyone sinks sometimes...just some are more prepared to go down and come back right up strong. Take care and I hope you will get in this year Im sure you will if you keep at it.

one more question...you really think I should speak to them about it? I would consider that w/any other professor, but she is the devil...she really is. I used to go to her office hrs (I was the only one that went) and she was not very helpful...I had problems done I wanted her to clarify for me, and she kind of belittles people. Its very discouraging. I honestly think she would be happy if I got rejected twice. She is probably the meanest prof I ever had...not just to me, to everyone. Anyways, anyone have any advice for mean profs?

hey seema, my situation is similar to yours. I currently only have a 3.0 gpa. My science gpa is also 2.7 but I still some more science classes to go. Not only that, my change my major from business to economics because our b-school (Goizueta) is just not fun and has a "curve-down" system.

it's going to be difficult to get my gpa back up. i am a junior so i have 1 year and a half. I am also applying 1 year late than usual, so I will be applying in the summer after senior year.

that 1 C+ won't kill you. and make that class a priority next semester.

good luck to you vijay! let us know what happens :)

Simseema17,

As a second round applicant, I have to say (not to be blunt) that it will be more work for you to prove yourself! I have spoken to numbers of admission coordinators/directors and they all have said that a second round applicant must do more and show more to distinguish themselves from first-time applicants! Whether it's more clinical exposure or more academic upper division/graduate level science courses, 2nd time applicants must submit an enhanced application from their first one!

As for you post-bac program, dental schools do look heavily at that because, think about it, during post-bac, you are essentially demonstrating to dental schools that you are able to heck a challenging curriculum and your true academic abilities. Post-bac programs has the sole purpose of providing you "the" opportunity to demonstrate your academics. Since I'm currently also in a post-bac program, every admissions/coordinators that I have spoken to have told me that if I receive a grade lower than a "B-", then my whole post-bac purpose is defeated! Please note that, this is only my experience and the advice that I recieved from dental schools with my past and current academic and clinical credentials! Everyone's profile is different, but if you didn't get in the first time, "GENERALLY" it will be more difficult for you to get in the 2nd time especially if you didn't do well in your post-bac program! Sorry to be so harsh, but it's just my opinion based on numerous admissions coordinators/directors.

I wish you the best of luck, but at least you have a 3.0 to show for in your applications. I only have a 2.76 overall GPA and &lt; 2.5 overall science in undergrad, but much better GPA in my post-bac program.
:(

Yah-Z is definately right! You are playing Rocky and entering the ring for the second time. If you do not demonstrate that you are prepared for the challenge you will not get another chance. So prepare for the fight of your life in order to stay in the ring and persevere. Just like in the movies, people become critical, but it is only upto you to take that criticism to heart or lead your self to victory. Encouragement only drives someone so far, but defeat and the determination to get back on your feet is something else. I hope you did good in your post-bacc classes, if not you could ask for advise on this board since probably everyone by now knows your story.

Simseema17 where art thou?

Does anyone know where this girl is? It's been awhile since she has posted. Hope to hear from you soon.

I miss you.

I'm here! I'm busy right now, but I'm going back to my apt tomorrow...so far I know two grades from my first semester:

Organic: A-
Microbio: B

I don't know what my biochem grade is yet. This coming semester I plan on taking organic II, endocrinology and another bio. I also plan on volunteering in a dental clinic and will tutor chem (only if its paid because I don't want to be spreading myself thin when I can be studying). Anyway, that is my plan this year and then I'm going to apply in June...AAARGH!! I hope I get in. You guys are right, I have to kick butt this semester...do you think I'm on the right track? Or do you have anymore suggestions? Anyway, I really have to go, but please respond and thanks for your support guys! I hope I end up in a dental school w/supportive students! :) :D

Welcome back!! I'm very impressed with your two grades, lets hope you do good in biochem as well. I think you're on the right track and hopefully this year will be a charm for you and me.

Good luck.

Yay Simseema! Lets hope this time next year all this worrying is just a distant memory!

well I got my third grade...to most of you, you'd probably not be happy but I am...I was pretty sure I'd get a C, but I got a B-. So first semester grades:
Organic: A-
Microbio: B
Biochem: B-

I really had such a terrible time w/biochem, mostly because of the prof. I don't want to complain on here, but she was horrific. At least it's over. My mom's response to my grades were "that's not good, I thought you could get all A's"...
Eh, I will work even harder next semester then...yippee  :D

This thread is NINE YEARS OLD. You seriously expect them to answer you?

Look, people don't get rejected cause they did bad in a single course. So u didn't do too hot in biochem, big deal, that's not really going to hurt you that much...HOWEVER...

Your real problem is much deeper than biochem alone. Your GPA, sGPA and DAT are all bellow average.

The OP is already a practicing dentist or is well into his other career if that failed. Good thing school was easier to get in back in the day.

sigh i was reading this and was like nice story.
Then some dick had to call out that it was 8 years old and be a killjoy lmao

Dang 9 years old! I didn't know SDN was that old!
I would love to know what the OP is doing nowadays since a lot can happen in 9 years.

I don't even want to know how this thread got revived
