So I checked my work email earlier today, and it turns out I received a response from Debbie Melton basically telling me to be patient and to wait for stuff to mail. I'm thinking about sending a thoughtfully worded and non-attacking response to her just laying out my criticisms about how slow their office is in handling, especially when compared with schools like UW who have a very similar admissions scheme. I'd just like to get it off my chest and give some possibly constructive feedback. Do you all think this is a horrible idea? Again, it's going to be professionally worded and not an all-out attack.

Right now, it just seems like OHSU is exuding their stereotypical arrogant attitude. It's not really a surprise that Portlanders say so many bad things about the place.

I think it's a fine idea, exlawgrrl, especially if you keep it very professional (and I am sure you will). They should be happy to get some feedback from people who have gone through the process and can comment on it in a constructive way.

I think it would be great if you did that, and certainly not inappropriate. On the other hand, for your own sanity, you might just want to walk away. Focus on UO and forget about OHSU. As much as I would love it if you gave them a well thought out piece of your mind, I'm not sure they are worth any more of your time or energy. I'd give it a week or two. If you still care at all then, go for it!

Matters like these can be done at any time and usually, when you do them with haste, you end up regretting it. So I would agree that it's a good idea to wait a week or three and then decide if you are still up to it. By that time, you'll be very clear headed and your comments will be much more likely to make an impact.

I know we usually get the feeling that a letter is read and then tossed immediately but lately I have had a streak of my constructive criticism being taken well and replied to with thought. Wheather it was Senator Barak Obama or my microbiology professor, they cared enough to think about it and write back. The microbio professor even brought the concerns up in class and stated that she completely agreed. So after a few weeks, you would be doing OHSU a service by writing such a letter. Just remember, the more positive you are in your comments, the more likely they are to be taken to heart.

Thanks for the happy birthdays! It was actually on cinco de mayo, but close enough for me to count admission as a b-day present! I found out before I got a birthday present from my mom, even, so it has to count, right?
It's a day later and I'm still in a daze...very happy that the waiting is over and that I won't have to go through the application process a third time...

I can't wait to meet my future classmates! exciting times!!

So I decided I'm going to send it on Monday. If I put it off, I'll forget, and I think that would be a shame. I'll be sure to look up and post AAMC guidelines for admissions because it seems like they're a good two months behind that, which is inconsiderate both for their applicants and for other schools.

Anyway, dh was seriously bummed. I'm not really, and I hope he gets over it.

Okay, I found the AAMC information about timelines.

Got the letter. I am #60 on the WL.

Argh, that's good and bad -- how are feeling about it? I received my letter of "non-acceptance" today. 🙄 That made me feel so much better than getting a letter of rejection. 😉

I don't know how I feel about it. Last year, #60 wasn't bad (they got up to 96). This year, they upped tuition and added 8 seats to the class so maybe the waitlist will go deep again. Who knows? It really sucks that I'll be spending this summer uncertain about my future 👎

Im sorry about your letter of "non-acceptance". To quote someone else in this forum, OHSU is, indeed, a strange beast.

Actually I saw on last year's thread that tuition was slated to be 35,000 (IS) and 39,000 (OOS) and then the legislature gave OHSU extra funding in July that dropped in-state tuition at the last minute, which might be part of the reason the list went so deep. But, it looks like for the last three years they have gotten above #60, so I bet you'll get in! 😉

I sure hope so! Well, it will be hard, but its time to stop thinking about this for awhile. The status of the waitlist will be online on June 1st. A couple of years ago, by June 1st, the waitlist was already in the 30's.

Congrats to those who are certain of what they will be doing this fall and good luck to those who are still waiting to hear!

I think you are sitting in a pretty good spot. OOS tuition is sky-high at OHSU. It's higher than just about any private school. For that matter, even in-state tuition is high. For that reason alone I'm betting there will be a lot of turnover. Like you say, there has to be a big move right after May 15. Good luck!

Thank you so much. I dont want to go out and celebrate just yet....but if things do work out, look for me on the evening news 🙂. Good luck everyone

DrPain, You're golden. If they make it to 60, I'm buying shots for everyone in this thread.

OUCH...thanks for reminding me robh. I need to get on the phones and start fundraising. 😱

Good luck you guys. It seems like there is a pretty good chance that I'll see you all in Fall. :luck:

Does the letter with Waitlist information provide a website that we can refer to...i still havent recieved mine and am very curious as to what sort of information it contains. Thanks guys.

Just wanted to say good luck to you all. I just made the (tough) decision to not take my spot at OHSU, so that free's up at least one. All of you that are coming in from out of town, Portland is a great town and I'll definitely miss it. Good Luck again! :luck:

Good luck at Case! I assume that is where you are going. Hard to go wrong between Case and OHSU, but you've made a great decision.

I'm in! If they make it to 60 I'm down to get the 4rth round.

I wish we could check our status online sooner...

so im new but im jumping into your thread. im on the waiting list (#21), got the letter today. is there anyway we can find out we are accepted before june 1? how safe do you think i am? good luck to everyone-i hope to see you next year!

Doctorsoph, I think that they'll call you directly to offer you the spot if it becomes available before June 1st. The "now serving" list (I call it the 'deli list') on the website is more for the sanity of the rest of us, I think, and also so the admissions office doesn't have a hundred neurotic pre-meds calling daily for the waitlist update. Correct me if I'm wrong, folks!

21 is an AWESOME number. You'll almost certainly get in, if past years are any indication. :luck:

And as a side note, it looks like we're all going to be pretty blasted if they dip to 60! :hardy: Woohoo!

I wish we could, too. I'm biting my fingernails...and I can't sleep! Preview of years to come, perhaps?

Preview indeed! Except at least then we’ll know where we stand – anything must be better than the dark abyss of waitlists and the uncertainty of not knowing where you will end up.

By the way, you’re right…we’re all getting pretty smashed if this list moves along 😀

thanks for your help pocketdoc. i feel good about 21, but i know #13 as well. i agree, knowing one way or the other would be better than being on the waiting list.

i talked to the admissions office today and it seems like each year they go farther down the wait list (2005-96, 2004-60something, 2003 and 2002-30something). I say once they make it down to all our numbers we should get together this summer and cash in these rounds. I will personally buy the 5th round. and we will be pretty plowed 👍 . yay!

Do you know if # 13 will be accepting if taken off the waitlist? Debbie left me with the impression that the top 20-25 on the list should hear back before june if this year resembles previous years. With the OOS tuition being what it is, it likely will. Best of luck guys

DrPain said:

I do know #11 (hi Stan!...if you are reading this) and he will be accepting if taken off...but I think #18 is a great number!!! :luck:

I haven't talked to #13 about it, but i talked to our premed advisor and got the distinct impression that he would accept if taken off the waitlist.

i would absolutely love to know by june 1! the waiting is agonizing.

I'll go in for round 6 if the list gets up to 68 (I know #s 67 & 68 and hope they make it!), as long as we don't have 68 people drinkin! Plus, by round 6 maybe half the gang will have fallen of their chairs (I'm thinkin: shot, wait a minute, shot, wait a minute... 🙂), right? 🙂

Shots, shots, shots..... what better way to get to know some of our future classmates!!

To those of you who are lower on the list, let us know if you get a call.

For those of you who are withdrawing from OHSU or know of others withdrawing or giving up their waitlist spot, we'd love to hear about it. 🙂

So, a lot of you know my long story about my application to OHSU, and how I feel like their app. process screwed me over (it's all in this thread.). When I got rejected, I obviously called my loved ones to let them know. Well, when I told my Grandfather, he was pretty unhappy. He is an alum from the OHSU MD program, a former resident instructor there, and former president of the alumni association. He said "Well, I was going to give them a million dollars, but now I'm not... I guess they'll have to live with that, Jon." I thought he was joking... he always jokes like that. Well, I found out... he was dead serious. Hahahaha. Sorry, but my bitterness makes me laugh. Kind of a nice middle finger to OHSU's admissions office.

No offense to all of you who got in. I wish you all the best, as we may be colleagues someday.

Yeah, who knows, Weebs? I don't get them, either, and based on your mdapplicants profile, they are MISSING OUT by not accepting you even outside of your grandpa's donation. I'm really sorry--best of luck in Virginia. 🙂

We didn't know each other, did we? I had some pals on the ultimate team when I was doing my undergrad at UO...

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate them! I actually am very excited to go to U.Va. It's a great school, and is in a neat little town. A change of scenery and experiencing a different place never hurt anyone 🙂.

When were you at UO? I played for 2yrs on the travel squad, 02-03, and 03-04. If you know anyone from those two school years that played, we probably have mutual acquaintences at the least. Small world 🙂

That makes me smile, too. He should write a letter to the school just to let them know what's up and what they're missing out on. I think a lot of Oregonians would be pretty disappointed in OHSU if they knew how little preference OHSU gives to instate applicants.

For those of us who are still waiting... 10 more days until JUNE 1st !!

yay everyone! 10 days left until the list goes up!! when you think about how long we've been waiting, 10 days is nothing. but it will be the longest 10 days ever...is anyone waiting to hear from other schools as well? im not but i just wonder about other people.

Maybe he can give you the $1 mil and you can take it to OHSU and slide it under the Dean's door with a note mentioning yourself and perhaps a provocative photo?

10 more days isn't that bad. You're right, it will seem much longer. OHSU is the only school Im still waiting to hear from. I will go there if Im accepted.

Dr. Weebs, I'm really sorry you didn't get in. I looked at your MDapps profile and I can't figure out why you didn't.

But if you apply again next year, maybe your grandfather can donate ahead of time, and let them know you're related? Underhanded, yes, but it just might work.

Good luck you you at U of V or EVMS!

FINALLY... I got word from OHSU. I've been "on hold" since mid-January. I was placed on their Alternate List for the MD/MPH program. I've already committed to my state school and am happy with that decision, so I think I'll withdraw my application at OHSU...

has everyone already heard from OHSU via mail? i've received zero word so far after being put on hold back in January.
