Anyone else dying to hear from UW-Madison!?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As expected, Rejected (hey! I made a rhyme!).

"We regret to inform you..." you are too stupid to come to our school. :meanie: They included a list of stats for this year's applicant pool/Class of 2012 and it was crazy competitive! Congrats to all those who got in!

Sorry to hear that

would you mind posting the stats that were in the letter? I'm expecting my rejection letter in another day or two...

I'm sorry carrbear🙁 don't worry, I'm sure I'll be joining you with a rejection soon. What were the stats?

I'm just curious, if you get put on the alternatives list, do they tell you that in the letter or do they just say rejected (since you pretty much are for the time being)

I got myself all pumped up to get the mail (I'm terribly worried that I won't get into my IS school) and all I got was a junk-mail POSTCARD. not even a whole envelope. boo. now i suppose i must wait until tomorrow ... and then til monday.

Carrbear: if you would list the stats ... and if the letter gives them as OOS only or IS as well .... ??

Nike -- did they post the stats in your letter? might you know them??

So I don't know if anyone else has tried to call, but they WILL NOT give decisions over the phone. I just tried. talked to a very nice sounding man (per standard) but ... nope. i have to wait. boo .....

PS: I promise I will stop posting on this thread. the last three posts are my own. apparently i type a lot when i get nervous.

Wi girl, you are too cute. I mostly posted because I wanted you to be able to post again without it being your 4th post in a row

Also, while ya'll wait for carrbear to come back to her computer (she must have gone outside or to work or something, the nerve! 🙂) here's the only stat I know: there were over 800 applicants for the 20 OOS spots. That's crazy.

mail in Baltimore, MD!

alternate, and yes they do give the ranking (unfortunately I'd say my chances are slim, but hey, no rejections yet)... anybody have any idea how many people are on this list? In the letter it says that in recent years they've offered spots to 25 to 85... they had 730 applicants for the 20 OOS spots they had 730 applicants.

there are A LOT of stats but if anybody really wants them now (rather than waiting for your letter) then pm me

Madison to baltimore: 849.6 miles
madison to ithaca: 820 miles

you think my letter would have been here today.

ps: thanks fargeese. i waited for two posts, just to be on the safe side ...

Just got my letter (in Texas) and I'm waitlisted. Not too high up on the list, but hey, I was expecting an outright rejection!

I think it's interesting that there were only 730 OOS applicants this year - last year there were 978 (according to their website)

Just wanted to add that I got my letter and I am also on the alternate list.

Madison to baltimore: 849.6 miles
madison to ithaca: 820 miles

You crack me up Wi girl. And yet you made me want to look up the distance: 950+ miles...🙁

I guess as annie says: Tomorrow? I just might go crazy if its one of those things like RazorDoc said and its a few weeks before I hear. The longer it goes the more impatient i grow!!

When I called the admissions office today to see if I could get my decision, they said ALL letters have gone out (wed). ALL IS ALL OOS -- there are no more letters in WI office. The guy really was very nice, and pretty funny actually ...

sidenote: just because i happen to be in NY myself, calpardny, and obviously i love mapblast (i am also using it to check out distances of apartments from the vet schools) i looked you up (well, calpard, ny) and its not a city ... so ... are you in NY? what area?

Waitlisted, too...ridiculously high, just barely within the 25 to 85 people they've pulled off the list in recent years...here's hoping lots of people decide to go somewhere else!

For the stats of invited OOSers:
GREQ - 725
GREV - 585
GREAW - 4.7
GPA - 3.64
GPA (req. courses) - 3.67
GPA (last 30 hrs) - 3.79

With average IS invited stats just lower than that. Thought it was interesting that of the invited OOSers, 8 are female and 12 are male (for IS it was 47 female, 13 male).

Haha! Wi girl - you sound like someone I would get along with (stalking, sadly, happens to be something i am good at and love to do!). I am in NY but no, Calpard is not a town - or not one I know of. I am actually on Long Island - hence why i said you can't get more east coast (though you can get east) from where I am!

Calpard comes from a nickname I had at school - Calendar - and my schools mascot - Leopards (but we often called ourselves pards!) Yeah i know - im not creative with this stuff!

Yes, because wi girl wins awards across the board. 😀

here's hoping that i become one tomorrow!

Haha...well you clearly love the state so i think its more than ok!

Break a leg to you! Ill keep my fingers crossed!

good luck to you too!

and to all the others who posted earlier that they are still waiting for decisions!

ps: if wi only accepts 20 OOS at a time ... there are 10 (!) from SDN (so far)! go us!! congrats everyone!

I just said that to my mom! Go SDN!

ok...i think wi girl and i have hijacked this thread enough...back to dying to hear from wisconsin!

I also made the alternate list ... if enough OOS people decline then I might have a shot. Still not holding my breath, but this was a nice surprise 🙂

I'll be the another NY person to post😀

On Long Island as well and no letter for me either.

Calpard, if you don't mind me asking where on LI are you and are you a native?

I'm a transplant, near Huntington, but since I went to a WI high school and college for that matter AND my parents are still WI residents, I believe that I'm being considered in the IS applicant pool.

Yay for more NYers!!!😀

Rebeki - The great neck, manhasset, port washington area - so still North Shore but a bit west of you. Lived here since I was about 3 (ive lived in all three towns!) though I was born in NYC and went to college in PA, and live here with my parents now. Huntington is a long way from wisconsin!!

I guess that would mean I'm the furthest east, by about 15 miles🙂

I really have to find something to keep myself busy until the mail comes at 3:00 - oh it seems so far away😱

You may not. My mail - very very strangely - decided to come EARLY today...11am!

Sadly, rejection 🙁 ...kind of expected it but still slightly dissapointed!

Oh well - gl to the rest of you waiting!

Oh, sorry calpard! You were looking at carib schools, right? any decisions there?

EDIT: so i went back and looked at the posts -- Ross and Glasgow, right? which direction are you leaning?

Yes i've been accepted to both Ross and Glasgow 😀. But i am also waiting on Illinois letters to come back (hopefully sooner this week rather than later) and holding out for one of the last few interviews at Penn! But right now I am just ecstatic to know I am going to vet school, and even more thrilled that I have a choice!

I am horrible at making decisions, especially these kind, because unless there is something major i want to go everywhere and want to experience everything! I go back and forth every day, but right now i am leaning towards Glasgow...

If I were you, I'd go to Glasgow... what an awesome way to live in europe for 4 years! incredible! And, I think Glasgow might have a better rep than Ross, though I don't know. Basically, though, I think living in Scotland would be priceless. All those accents! All that scenery!! 👍👍

and isn't glasgow where James Herriot went?!🙄

I know this isn't much help, but I know a girl who was accepted OOS to UW. She has a ton of acceptances so there is a pretty good chance she will decline and open up a spot for one of you!

I know thats kinda all whats drawing me to it (though I know ross is getting up there in reputation recently - and i mean a carribean island for school couldnt be that bad!!) Its that glasgow is 5 years thats holding me back i think...that extra year of tuition and time!

Thanks for the input hoodle...always good to hear other people's opinions and especially those going through the vet school process too!

Just got my rejection letter in the mail, which is not too surprising considering the stats! The school supplied some stats with the letter: 8 OOS females (out of 548 eligible!) and 12 OOS males (out of 123 eligible) were invited. For IS, 47 females were invited (out of 133 eligible) and 13 males were invited (out of 29 eligible). Good luck to those still waiting to hear! :luck:

I almost never swear....but.....

HOLY Fing S*#t!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you - thats so sweet! I guess you'll just have to go out and represent and propagate the good name of LI! 😉

Holy Cow Holy Cow Holy Cow --- I"m In!!!!!!!

I'm buying my plane ticket right now --- AND i get to see my pup while at home YAY!!!

PS: wivet -- I'm really starting to lean towards WI again, I just need to be shown how GREAT a school is and be able to see myself there ... maybe you can help with that? 🙂

wi girl, I'm not a current student there, but I can say that I have talked to lots of people about madison and about the school, and the responses I get back are breathtakingly positive! i would really seriously think about it... esp. as you're instate and so it makes financial sense. Madison is such a cool town - perched right in the middle of three lakes - I've driven through it twice now, and each time we stay a couple of days and have dinner, explore, etc. Because it has the government buildings, it really has a fancy section and plenty of high-quality restaurants, but then it's also a college town, so it's relaxed and affordable and liberal and fun. The university is SO high power in terms of research and reputation, as well, and the faculty are extremely talented and focused.

ALSO, there's the world's largest indoor water park less than 45 minutes away! :wow: kalahari water park (yes, its african-themed), perhaps the most bizarre structure in all of the united states, but no less fun to play in!:laugh:

Hoodle, what a ringing endorsement!! I actually live 15 mins from the vet school in madison, so I'm well aware of the WONDERFULNESS of madison (although, as I said, that was a great endorsement). I just need to get over their reputation of not much hands-on-animal work until 3rd year. to be honest, that's the only sticking point .... if I wanted to do research, there is already a lab i could be in (hESCs -- very cool stuff) and the different in tuition between MN and WI might let me buy a condo to live in at madison. PLUS, i'm pretty positive that i can get a job at a particular emergency clinic for some extra $$/hands-on experience. so .... i just really need to be able to see myself there, which hopefully i will be able to do at the open house!!

hoodle -- i saw that you were accepted there, but also several other places -- any thoughts yet on your decision?

For me, it currently all rests in the hands of my partner! My options are the VSTP program at Davis (my top choice- great school, sunny, and fully funded), the DVM/PhD program at NC-State (they pay tuition but no stipend, and its a more conservative school than I like), or DVM only at Wisconsin or Cornell. I think we're about 80% sure about Davis, but she hasn't visited yet... I can't make a unilateral decision, so I'm on hold!

If I were single and not interested in DVM/PhD, it'd be between Davis, WI, and Cornell, and I honestly don't know which I'd pick! I would just be so grateful to have the options (I mean, i AM so gratefuL!)

(I withdrew from Penn, turned down UMN, Illinois, Oregon, and though I haven't withdrawn yet, I don't want to go to Tufts)

YAYY!! That's great, congratulations!!!!🙂

You know that there is a DVM/PhD program at WI if you want to do it -- you apply after your first year. I actually asked about this before I applied (Dec 06). There is not a formal program, but they will work with you to get one done if you want ... they did emphasize that we could pretty much make whatever we wanted with our degrees once we got there. Just throwing that out there for consideration. It's nice that you got multiple acceptances so you can both make a decision though ... I imagine it would have been difficult to make a decision had you not had as many possibilities.

Thanks Hobiecat!!

Yeah, I've been in some communication with the research people over there about their "we'll work with you" DVM/PhD policy. The drawback is that there is no financial or administrative support, as of now. I'm surprised, bc I would hae thought that Wisconsin, with their research base, would have jumped on the dual degree program bandwagon earlier. Its one of those things where I'm sure I could have an excellent experience there - and that's why I'm still really considering it, esp. if my partner hates davis! - but if I know I want to do a DVM/PhD, why not enroll in a program which will coordinate the process and help me along the way?

Also, of note wi girl: in the accepted students package thingy, under the "info to invted applicant" , section 2, they say "The approach to clinical instruction in our curriculum is based on the assumption that the student is better prepared if clinical instruction beings early in the professional education process" etc etc, they go on to describe how they do this. Additionally, if you look at the "Veterinary medical curriculum and instructors" they have course 623-570, "Health, history, and Physical exam" which runs through both semesters one and two of your first year. THat sounds to me like they are teaching you how to do basics in the clinical setting from the first semester! Of couse, it might be a joke (meeting once a semester or something)... any current WI students with insider info?

Hey hoodle,

this is off topic and has nothing to do with WI but I was wondering why you aren't interested in Tufts? Purely selfish on my part--just curious to hear your opinion!

thanks!

The health, hx, PE course - we have labs almost every week. Time spent "learning how to communicate with owner", practice restraint and PEs on real live dogs and cats. Have an exam at the end of the semester where you walk through a PE on a dog with a clinician observing.
Second semester is spent on mainly : b large animals - weekly labs "restraining" cows, horses, birds, rabbits, ferrets. Learn to do a PE on a cow & horse. Same testing procedure on horse or cow at end of semester.

Hope that helps! 🙂

pika8 - sent you a PM.

mbj - that sounds great! but a ferret and bird are large animal?! (hehe). anyhow, to adress wi girl's concerns - it does sound like you touch animals before your third year!

reply to hoodle sidenote: I actually read this to my mom over the phone (it was the second thing after I GOT IN!). when i interviewed at MN and loved it, it was because they stressed how early you get hands on ... and she loved that aspect too (yes, my mom is one of my major decision-making partners/brainstormers). anyhow, she agrees that we need to investigate at the open house. are you going?

and obviously i should read all the posts before i go ahead -- i think that we do get experience relatively the same -- esp. if we're doing PEs. which is good to know. ALSO -- since I'm small animal, apparently you have to bribe or torture your way to get time in the SA hospital at UMN (you can shadow, but that's about it). At WI, they have available student jobs. which is nice -- except i think i want to work at an emergency clinic. just info for anyone following along to our debate.
