Anyone have a cool job??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I play guitar for a living, it's cool. I'm on tour playing with a singer named Jem right now. I'm also applying to med school curious to see whether my lack of traditional EC's prevents me from getting in anywhere. My other stats are strong.

Has anyone considered work as a surgical tech? The training program is relatively short, and some even get to do very minor procedures with enough experience.

I'd do it, but I don't really have time left to warrant spending the money and time getting the diploma.

Work in Congress. House Committee on Commerce and Energy, Subcommittee on Health. If you want power this is the place to be, and did I mention that we have interns.... 😀

i'm a personal trainer....love it!

Well.....where to start:

PIG FARMHAND- Fed hogs and bailed hay during summers for four years during high school and undergrad.

Golf Caddie- Level AA golf caddie for private club and several tournies.

Golf Course Greens Keeper- one summer during undergrad

Garbage Man/Sanitation Engineer- Did this for 2 1/2 years during undergrad vacations and summers.

Research Fellow, NIH- Two years, mixed emotions, loved the people but research can be stagnent.

For everyone with a position working in a hospital, how did you go about getting it?

I'm interested in working in one, but all of my past job experience dealt with customer service and call center jobs. I have absolutely no clinical or experience in a hospital type environment.

Can I just show up at the Human Resource Center and apply? I don't want to look dumb because I have no experience in this field. Is there a no experience/no certification job for someone like me?

Thanks

I have a boring sounding job, but its actually pretty sweet...

I am working at Los Alamos National Laboratory, doing analytical chemistry research in a nuc facility. Its sweet being around the weapons facility and plutonium stuff, etc... and its gonna net me 4 pubs as 2nd author, which is an added bonus. Basically, students here get to rake it in and do a lot of hands-on research, so if any of you are younger, like sophs or fresh, and want to have a sweet summer vacation to northern NM, I highly recommend it.

Wow, that sounded like a recruitment brochure, sorry.

What types of jobs are u interested in? If u don't have any clinical experience...u could apply to an administrative job or they have care team assistants in some hospitals...but u might need experience for that. You could also volunteer....Alot of hospital positions require certification (Nurses, rad techs, MT etc) but u could work in any part of the hospital! Thhey also have unit secretarys which probably only require a HS or college degree and no clinical experience. U could also be a lab assistant, pt. transporter etc. Check out their websites or go to HR and see what positions they have. Whichever u qualify for...apply!

You should call hospitals in your area to see if they have scribe programs in their Emergency Departments if you want some great clinical experience. Sometimes (like at the hospital where I work) those positions are not well-publicized or posted in the general HR listings.

More about the scribe job...these programs specifically want pre-med students so you don't have to lie about applying to med school during the upcoming year and getting time off for interviews.

Hi, thanks for the response.

I do not have any certifications or clinical experiences whatsoever. I just got my HS Diploma and am still just a lowly college student. I would like to get some experience dealing with patients. I guess I'll check out the lab assistant and pt. transporter position. I cannot afford to volunteer at this time. I need a paying job to cover rent and living expenses. It would be a big plus to get clinical experience and get paid for it at the same time. If not, I'll see if I can get a normal job for $$$ purposes and volunteer but I'll go that route if there are no other possible way..

Thanks again
