Anyone heard from UCSF yet?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think they are looking for well-rounded students that will contribute in some unique way to the campus and field of pharmacy. On their page they state that GPA is not a big factor; in fact, students with 4.0 GPA's were rejected for the 2006 entering class because they lacked one or more of the following areas: extracurricular activities, communication skills (as presented in your 7-8 essays), letters of recommendation, and health-related experience. I'm not a 4.0 gpa student, but many people that applied to UCSF have this gpa. For me, I believe it was the EC's, pharmacy experience, letters of recommendation, and the time I spent on those essays (2 months) that give me the opportunity to interview.

For those of you invited to the interview, congratulations and good luck.

i agree. i don't have a very high gpa but i've been invited for an interview..i'm still shocked

I got my rejection letter yesterday. I live in Maryland. Very confused. 🙁

I thought about it for a long while. I guess UCSF looks for people specifically with leadership qualities. If UCSF is a place just for leaders and policy makers, then it's not for me. I know I don't have that in me. What do you think?

I dunno... this year sounds pretty weird to me. Sounds like a lot of people were shocked this year. Maybe it is partly out of luck.

Last year I was waitlisted to UCSF. This year I got my first rejection letter (from UCSF!). Hmmm... It was a bit disappointing.

But it's ok because I was very close to being accepted UCSF last year. And I got invited to all the other California schools this year, even UCSD! And I didn't expect to get an invite from UCSD at all!

So it's not all bad.

Rejected by UCSF...😳 🙁

Rejected as well! All that time wasted filling out that stupid application. 🙁

Hey everyone,

I received an interview for USCF also for Feb. 3rd but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to stay? I'm out of state and have researched online and via the suggestions given on the UCSF website but just thought I'd ask on here too - personal suggestions are usually more helpful.

If anyone in the area has any recommendations on hotels/lodging in the area, that'd be great. Happy New Year!

i'm with u. i had been dreading about this reapplication thing. too bad... it proved me right.

Yea.. as I thought... rejected cold 🙁 . I could even tell before opening that flimsy letter I was turned down. All that hard work on the essay... I knew I should have not "donated" to that school. Ridiculous questions that only took my precious time 😡 ... but congratulations to those who got the interview. I hope it goes well for you guys..

War Trojans! :horns:

So I checked my mail today in my college apartment and STILL I have nothing from UCSF, no rejection.. nothing! I just wish I'd hear anything!

Anyone else in the same situation!?? 😕

Thanks 🙂

they said that they would mail mine in a few days... is it true that the invites are usually given before xmas??

I think so 🙁

I just find it weird why they rejected some people before holiday break, and then some after.. 😕 .. is it that hard to mass mail them to everyone??

Sorry if i'm being a pessimist, I hope I'm wrong.. 😳

Or on the bright side maybe they put some people on a very short "hold" status and will invite more when some people don't accept their interviews

i heard some people got invites after the winter break. so there may still be hope. i think maybe more invites will be sent if people decline the interview. but im not sure thats just my guess. keep ur hopes up!

I think gkim is right. Not to say that those rejected already are at the bottom, but I think that they hold off on letters for some people in case other applicants reject their interview invite and open up spots. And it's definitely not to say that you're at a disadvantage if you get your letter later, I have a friend who got accepted to UCSF (not waitlisted at all) and she got her letter after the new year. Like I wrote earlier, if you haven't gotten mail by now, that could be better.

And a reminder, it might be a couple of days since today was a federal holiday (= no mail). So I hope you guys get some good mail later this week! 🙂

If u check out last year's posts, a few people got their invites in mid-Jan.

Got an interview invite today, dated 1/4/07. I live in the Bay Area, so don't give up hope, they're still sending them out!

My interview date is 1/26 🙂

I actually got my rejection letter yesterday.. which ironically came to my permanent adress (if you remember I drove to my college apartment 3 hours roundtrip just to check my mail over break 🙄 )

For my x-mas gift I got a rejection letter from UCSF...

Sorry to all of you who received rejections. That doesn't mean you won't get in somewhere & become great pharmacists! There are lots of wonderful places to go.

For the person who needs a place to stay - if you're flying in - I'd say stay near the airport. There really aren't hotels near the school & everything downtown or near the wharf is tremendously expensive.

You'll need to arrange for shuttle transportation or a cab to get you to the school.

My advice is to call the admissions office & ask if they have a recommendation. Often, they'll have an arrangement with a particular chain which will give a student or professional rate.

Allow yourself plenty of time to get there - traffic on a workday is heavy & the airport is in Burlingame/San Bruno area.

Congratulations to those who received interviews & good luck on them.

For the ones who received rejections - don't let that lessen your sense of worth & what you can contribute to the profession. You can & will be great pharmacists!!!! (Look at Zpak!)😀

I just got an invite 2 days ago for feb 8th interview. My GPA is not stellar at all: 3.15 or so. I'm interviewing very late in the game so my chances may be slimmer, but its still a chance!!! So Excited.

Congrats to all of you who got an interview! I received my rejection letter on Friday. If you haven't heard anything yet, you still have hope!

Finally! Just got an interview invite (TOTAL surprise). Anyone else going on 2/9? 😀

Does anybody have a Feb 3 morning interview at UCSF?

I'm also interviewing Feb 3. I can't remember if it's 8 or 8:30.

Oh man I wish I had a Saturday date! Mine's on a Friday morning, traffic into the city is going to be horrible...

I am interviewing on Feb 3rd at 8:30 also, I received my letter 12/26

anyone interviewing on jan 26th?

This might be a dumb question, but are there two airports in san francisco? If so, which one is closer to the campus.

Also, are there any cheap hotels near the campus. I know that's a stupid question considering it's the bay.

i believe SFO airport is closer.

cheap hotels near the campus... not really. i looked around a bit, there are a few places near (less than a mile) but it didnt seem too safe/great. it all depends what you consider cheap. there are a few travelodges that are about 2 miles away for 60-80. but if you want lower than that, i dont know about that.

norcal ppls, any suggestions?

No....there is only one airport & its not even in SF - SFO is in San Bruno (Burlingame???) & is south San Francisco.

The other airport you may be thinking about is Oakland International & is across SF Bay - really quite a distance away.

There are no hotels near the campus really, cheap or otherwise. Well...perhaps there are one or two.....but not really within walking distance. Remember, UCSF is at the top of a hill - its a hike up even from the N Judah line.

Check around with your resources - AAA, Expedia, etc....to find a deal on a room. There are safe areas to stay - the airport is very safe & you can get a hotel shuttle to and from the airport...you just have to have cab fare to get to the school - about $50.

The wharf & some areas of downtown are safe. Out by Mt.Zion hospital is safe - by SF General is NOT safe. If the hotel is on Mission, Howard, Turk, Ellis - its not safe.

But....if you stay in the city....you have to pay for cab fare to the hotel then to the school, back to the hotel & back to the airport.

I'd recommend staying near the airport....& asking them about car service to the school. I guess you could rent a car, but there is VERY little parking at UCSF & it fills up fast. Again...you might have to park quite a few streets away & walk. Its a safe area to walk in, but it really is a hike up the hill.

Good luck and have fun - its quite a city to visit.

Interviewing late at UCSF does not mean you have a 'slim' chance of getting in. After all the interviews are done they review all the applicants at the same time. It's not like USC where they accept a certain ratio out of each interview date.

Had my interview at UCSF today. Overall, the experience was great, the interviewers were very chill and I basically just had a 30 minute conversation with them. They aren't sending out decisions until mid-March so let the waiting begin! 🙂

For those who had an interview day, how was it? what did you guys do there? What did you guys write about? share your experience here!

Statistic - UCSF invited 308 applicants for interview. 6 declined. They will accept 122 out of 302. Will send out acceptance letters in the second week of March (the earliest), however 20% of the interviewees will receive their status within a week or two if they didn't do well on interview and essay.

Thanks for the great information! I have my interview on the 3rd 🙂

I'm a little nervous because the interview appears to end around 3:30pm and my flight is for 4:35pm (this is the only flight leaving that day to my city). What should I do?

Bring your bags with you to the interview, jump in a cab as soon as it's over and tell the cabbie to step on it! You're gonna be cutting it close but you should be ok since it's not international. Good Luck!

By the way, who's gonna be there on Saturday?? I'll be there 😀

I don't know....I think I'd leave the next day.

First...if your interview is on a business day, the traffic south out of the city can be difficult. There are lots of places where it can bog down.

Second...there are very few cabs just "sitting" outside the hospital - you may have to call for one.

Third...Its an international airport - security lines can be long & you could be leaving during a time when lots of businessmen are travelling.

Fourth...the financial aid may not be so important, but who knows what might go on - unsaid - at the campus tour? I'm not saying they would be getting any "sense" of you....but what if they are?

Finally...do you want this hanging over your head during the last hour or so of your interview???? What will you do if the conversation goes on a bit longer? Say...I gotta go to get my airplane? What is this worth to you?

Personally, I'd be sure I had a refundable ticket so I could miss the flight & be able to leave the next day.

Good luck!

2. 12:30-1:30pm Prerequisite review S-182

One hour for prerequisite review? That is a long time. Did UCSF not already review coursework before inviting applicants for interview?

Yes, we got one hour for our pre-requisites review. They gave you a review sheet that contain what classes you have been completed, pending or deficient. Based on your prequisites standing you can ask any questions you want. If you have no more questions you can leave the room and go back to the check-in area and wait for the next events. I met one applicants that found out she had 8 classes deficiency.
