Anyone on Temple's CCL list hear anything yet?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dr. Cadena interviewed me. Did anyone else have him? My tour guide did last year & she told me he's always a little "serious" at the beginning and then he warms up.

Doctora Foxy,

I didn't have Dr. Cadena. I interveiwed with Dr. Permut, who has the same reputation as an interviewer. Good luck with everything!

Otter: Are you refering to decisions regarding those that are on the CCL, or those not and being considered for something else like a waitlist, rejection, acceptance? I'm really eager to hear from Temple.

ussdfiant: I interviewed the same day you did. Sounds like some good news will be heading your way pretty soon. Keep us up to date when you get that letter. Too late for me to call them up now to ask them about my application but I'll do it first thing tomorrow.

I'm not sure if it's strictly just CCL people or otherwise. I just introduced myself to her as someone who's on the CCL right now and told her that I wanted to know when we might be hearing from them. She said that all the decisions are going out now. Maybe they've just wrapped up their final interview round and have made their final sweep of all the pending applicants (CCLers and those just interviewed) and have come out with the final decisions. But I don't want to speculate.

But I don't want to speculate.•••••My tour guides said they will be interviewing until mid-May. When I interviewed last Thursday, there were only 2 interviewees, plus 4 high school medical scholar interviewees (with their parents and all!). The committee meets every single Friday to discuss the week's interviews plus those from the Thursday of the week before. So while I definitely think their interviews are slowing down, I don't think they are finished yet. But it would be nice to hear something soon! My interviewer told me it would take 4 weeks---so I don't think they are making ALL the final decisions yet. They might wait until May 15th to take a ton of people off the CCL list, but let's hope that it's sooner! :D

Thanks for the info, Dr. Foxy. Oh man, I don't know what that woman was talking about, then. I was going to send a letter of interest to Temple, then decided to hold off. If they had just wrapped up their decisions on their end, then i didn't want to send an interest letter until I've gotten a confirmation by mail that I've been waitlisted. But, from your information, we CCLers won't find out until mid-May. So now, I don't know what to do.

I really like Temple, but I wish they wouldn't keep us in the dark with conflicting info. Like that CCL letter which said that EVERYONE is either rejected or CCL'd post-interview. We know that that doesn't seem accurate.

The letter for CCL does say that all candidates are put into two groups, but I was thinking that maybe all letters were sent out at the end of the week or something and some of them that were in the "CCL" list weren't sent the letter and accepted. My friend (who had similar stats, major, ec's, same undergrad) interviewed there with me on the same day. She got the outright acceptance, and I got a CCL letter.

Suz177 ---
The letter does say things about out-of-staters making up 40% of the class and CC with perm. residence outside of PA will be reviewed for possible acceptance in late spring (which probably means May 15th when people withdraw holding their spots). It also says the list will be active until late august (orientation)

They make it seem like it's a wonderful and great thing to be on the CCL. *shrug* Rather have an acceptance, thank you.

Dr. Cadena is awesome he gave me temple scrubs when he interviewed me!!

This mave have been mentioned in another thread, but I want to make sure I have a better idea of what the CCL list may be. Has everyone who has been accepted to Temple so far been outright accepted without hearing about being placed on the CCL? What about post-interview rejections, has anyone gotten one yet?

I still have not heard anything from them since my interview and I'm too chicken to call because I'm afraid whatever the secretary will tell me will distract me from studying for my finals coming up. Any more info that anyone has would be very much appreciated.

I interviewed there a while ago (I think March 12th or so) and my interviewer said he has nothing bad to say about me to the committee. I did send in my withdrawel, but about three days ago, I got a letter saying congratualtions, you have been put on the CCL list!!!. SO ussdefient, I think that is what letter I think you might be getting, but hopefully not.

On a side not, I never did send in my secondary. Saved 55$.

I got this info from Gower on medicalgold regarding Temple's waitlist:

Temple: In early June, the wait-list is divided into 3 categories--likely, possible, unlikely--and ranked. A letter is sent giving likelihood.
In 2001, about 50 made is off the list. Greatest movement: August. Pennsylvanians most likely to be accepted from the most-likely category. Only extraordinary accomplishment will affect rank. in deciding whom to take from the wait-list, Temple looks closely at the secondary describing why the student why the students wants to attend.

Well, I finally heard from Temple today and I got placed on the CCL, pretty much what I was expecting as an out of stater. The letter says "Each month, a limited number of acceptances will be offered from the continuing candidates list." So has anyone heard of anyone else being accepted from the CCL yet, since its supposed to happen each month? Also, is the "late spring" date May 15th?

Foxy: The tour guides that I had made a similar description of Temple's waitlist, only the categories were established sooner than June, more like Feb. or March. The two 2nd year students had interviewed in Feb. of their application cycle and were put on the waitlist about a month afterward. They said that they called and they were told by the secretary that they were in the "most-likely" category of the waitlist. Both of them got accepted about 2 or 3 weeks afterwards, one was in state, the other out of state I believe.

Also, based on the info from USNEWS, I would have to imagine that more than 50 people were pulled off the wait list to get accepted since 465 people were offered spots out of the 1108 who were interviewed, for a class a little over 200. Maybe I'm looking too hard into the numbers, looking for too much hope...but I thought I'd share my thoughts.

and the Temple saga continues. Maybe I will call my interviewer and see whats up. Being on the CCL for 4 months isn't much fun anymore.

Solid gold et al,

Based on the fact that you already received a letter I called Temple again. Now on Monday 4/15 I was told that a decision had definitely been made and that letters would be sent out no later than Wednesday (some delay caused by a dean being on vacation and the letters needed to be signed). I called today, spoke with someone else who said a decision had probably been made and said that no letter had been sent to me because of the dean being on vacation and letters needing to be signed and that I should wait until this time next week to receive something. What confuses me is that you did receive a letter. Was it signed (as opposed to stamped)? I have to say that I am now confused and a bit worried.

Actually, this may be a good thing since a real signature is required for your letter, hopefully. Like I said in the other thread you started, my letter had Uknis's name typed in with large italic font on my CCL letter. Wonder how everyone else's letter is signed, or not signed....

:) •••••I plan to do this, even though my interviewer told em they don't accept new information. We'll see....They didn't even have my Fall grades in my file and all the other schools did.

Does anyone know if PA applicants on the CCL will still be prioritized over out-of-state applicants, when Temple finally gets around to evaluating the CCLers in late spring? Now that they're just about done interviewing, I wonder if we're on equal footing with people from PA.

Does Temple even place PA residents on the CCL? It really seems like most people, if not all people, who are on the CCL are out of state applicants. Does any one know of anyone who is a PA resident on the CCL?

I think the CCL is for both in-state and out-of-state applicants. There's a poster named Mylaina on this thread who's a PA resident and is on the CCL.

If no one has been rejected, the CCL must be huge. This seems hopeless <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

Boy, they sure make us wait. I feel like I interviewed 2 years ago.

I suspect that all of us CCLers will be hearing all around the same time.

Do you think it will be around May 15th or closer to June 1st?

Okay, I did some digging around through last year's threads. It seems that, last year, the CCL applicants were notified in the later part of June. I'm not sure if this is the norm. If so, then we have another 6 weeks or so to wait around.

I sure hope they'll have many spots left for us. I really liked the students and the hospital.

If it doesn't work, try looking for a thread under the name "Temple Continuing Candidates" from June 2001.

I asked Gower on medicalgold.com what he knows about the CCL and here is what he said:

•••quote:••• Originally posted by Dra. Foxy:
What do you know about the Temple Continuing Candidates List for out-of-staters? Is there anything I can do to get in off this list, or should I just sit and wait?
•••• •••quote:•••Originally posted by Gower:

Temple is sure creative in naming its wait-list!

There are three categories: likely, possible, unlikely, each ranked. Pennsylvania residents get strong preference for admission from the "likely" category. You/your advisor may call for information, but not before early June when the categories are set up. Greatest movement: August.
Only unusually new accomplishments might affect rank. In deciding on acceptance from the wait-list, Temple pays close attention to the secondary application essay on why you want to attend. Keep Temple updated on any contact information.

If you have other irons in the fire, hang onto them.

Hey Doctor Foxy, I just got the same e-mail too. I hope this means that all of us will hear really soon. Temple is the only school that I have interviewed at so far and I only have one more at Finch in 2 weeks, so I'm really in a state of limbo.

Is, or has, anyone sent Temple a letter of interest yet, and do you really think it will help? I have one written out but I was going to send it once my new grades come in for this semester in the grad program I'm in. I'm almost sure that I will end up with a 4.0 with 17 grad credits for this term so I'm hopeful that this may boost my chances. Does anyone have any info if the Adcom will look at this stuff and take it into consideration while they review the CCL list?

I also got the same email.

As for the letter of interest, I (as well as others) have been told that it's already too late to submit any new materials related to the application, be it new grades or letters. They said that nothing can be added to your file beyond January 15th. That said, I don't think it hurts to write one. At worst, it'll just be discarded. At best, they may bend the rule and read it.

Solid, that's great! that could help!
i received the same email guys. and while i won't be getting a 4.0 this term with 17 grad credits also (same as you solid), i might be getting a 3.8824 (who cares about one stinkin B in gross anatomy lab when you missed 5 frickin labs!).

anyway, i gotta believe they'll look at these grades in deciding who's accepted.

i looked for my temple essays but couldn't find them..that sucks! i'd like to see what i wrote..hopefully i conveyed my full interest, fully. can anybody post these essay questions for us to look at (since i assume most of us don't have copies)?

PS. how does Gower know so much about schools--temple's CCL stuff in particular..and is he right?

•••••I don't have the secondary itself, but I do have the original letter acknolwedging the receipt of AMCAS application and instructing us on how to proceed with the secondary. It says: "Complete and return the attached Secondary Application, indicating and explaining your special interest in Temple University School of Medicine."

My essay was only 2 paragraphs long, although well-focused (I think). On top of that, I think I printed it, then glued it onto the secondary ... yes, really crude way. I sure hope they don't look down upon this.

1) SolidGold, I think I posted earlier on this thread that my interviewer told me they won't look at anything new, and nothing is official if it's not on AMCAS. However, if you already have it written out, it won't hurt to send it. I have heard that they like letters of intent.

2) Cavey: Gower is an experienced premed advisor and seems to know his stuff.

3) They sent me the secondary in an email, so I just filled it in on Microsoft Word and pressed print.....so Cavey, what do you mean by essays? Don't scare me! It was an easy secondary with a small space to say why you wanted to go to Temple, right? Mine was just 2 short paragraphs--it was all I could fit in the space. I'll post it here since I have it saved on my computer:

I actually filled out the paper secondary that was sent to me. There was only one essay on that too that asks the why you are interested in Temple. I wonder what they look for on that essay that will help them decide who to accept off the CCL... mine was just 3 or 4 sentences long.

Also, how does Gower know so much about how certain adcoms work?

damn, that's a short little essay. what could they POSSIBLY see in there. it makes more sense to go by how much enthusiasm the interviewer felt that the interviewee was showing.

it seems lots of people like temple a lot. i wonder why.... what i liked was how philly reminded me of a small scale new york city, and how the school's right there on the street (hey..i thought it was cool). more than that i liked the hospital and the reputation for clinical training that i keep hearing about. i also liked that all the notes are given out on syllabi the first day, and that they're on the web too. i also liked how friendly and collegial the students seemed. i liked that a lot. i also liked (BIG TIME) the gym and basketball court right there in the bottom of that building. i don't know if that's where lectures take place (building next door was where htey showed us a lecture--gross anatomy(!) taking place, but i mean all that stuff is within a hundred feet..barely any walking at all. i just liked it period. temple rocks.

exactly. Cavey, you should moved Temple up to my 2nd choice. Too bad I didn't know all that stuff when I did the lame secondary! I just reread mine, and it was too generic. I think at that point I just wanted to get it done with. Oh well, we'll see what happens...good luck to all you guys! :)

I liked Temple a LOT, too. I loved that basketball court in the basement of the student building. The idea of an indoor court right in the middle of the inner-city (where I presume most kids who play are very good), but tucked away so that us medstudent stiffs can play at anytime without getting laughed at, is just awesome.

I loved the attitude of the students. They were humble and very happy about the school. They all seemed really laidback and seemed like they had a lot of spare time outside of med school.

I can't say the same as Caveman about Philadelphia. I thought the city was kind of a pit. I have never seen a metropolis that is so dominated by rundown areas (although I hear Detroit is like that). I also didn't see much diversity other than blacks and whites. I drove out to check out the areas where the students said many of them lived. I think they were called Germantown and East Falls. Although they seemd pretty safe, they just sucked.

But I really loved that 2- or 3-block area that Temple Med occupies. I love the fact that it's like a self-contained, vibrant medical community right smack in the middle of the ghetto. It's hard to explain my fascination... I've done summer school at Columbia and I loved it there for the same reason. I love that little patrol shack on the intersection. I love to imagine that I'd be crossing that busy intersection everyday going from class, to a preceptorship at the hospital, to the basketball court, and back to class. The Children's Hospital and the University Hospital were really impressive. I think you get to be exposed to a LOT of trauma cases, which makes for a great clinical training site. I would definitely love to go there!!!

I really liked Temple too. I liked the city a lot. It's not all that great, and I don't know if I would want to practice there, but I really think that it is a nice place to study medicine. The gym that they have there looks tight the basketball court does look appealing, but is that why we all should go to Temple if we get accepted?

What really makes me absolutely love Temple is that the students there are happy. I talked maybe about a dozen students and they all loved the atmosphere there. The faculty is known to be really good at teaching and they seem to care about their students. The clinical training seems to be quite good. It's everything I dream of when I think about the kind of medical school I want to go to. The only thing that kind of sucks is the commuter nature of the school, but that's something that can be overlooked when you think about all the other positives. I want to be an Owl!

•••••I think you just need to spend more time in center city to realize that it is not run down at all. The area around Temple is of course destitute but it never claims to be anything different.

Center City and Rittenhouse are beautiful areas to live and offer many exciting opportunities!

Cultural diversity does certainy exist, just visit Chinatown or take a trip south on 9th St and you'll see some very diverse neighborhoods.
