PhD/PsyD APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2019)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks, friend. So over this. Felt like I did really well at start and now getting dumped on at end. Not sure what’s preferable. 13 ain’t bad but I really wanted Einstein and have quickly lost hope. Memphis VA just feels like a slap.

Having 13 interviews is amazing... any rejection is difficult and your feelings are valid there. But there are people on this forum with one interview or NO interviews. I would bet my life that most people have less than 13 interviews. I just think that it's also important to be sensitive to others who would kill to be in your position right now.

I agree - some times we get so caught up in our own lives that we forget to take other people's perspective.
hang in there, everyone. i'm hopeful that things will work out for us one way or the other.

No, I emailed the assistant but didn’t hear back

I happened to catch Ms. Reed via telephone before all the confusion from the dates in the original email was clairfied; she told me she plans to send out that email we are waiting for on Monday. 🙂

Got (positive) word from a little more than half my BOP sites yesterday, still waiting on several more. Not sure if anyone posted a complete list so I won’t repeat it unless someone would find it helpful.

I know Virginia treatment center for children sent out invites today, did anyone hear rejections?
Or Mercyfirst?
I heard nothing either way from VTCC....assuming that's a rejection that will come in at some point now that the notification date has passed.

For people who may be going into interviews soon who have less than your desired number of invites, I would recommend you think ahead of time about how you want to respond to other applicants that are going to bring this up at some point during the day. I did my first interview yesterday and during one of the breaks this topic came up and it was very awkward, to say the least, because I got the definite sense that everyone there had more interviews than me (which is fine), but I didn't quite know what to say at the time.

I think moving forward, I am going to say something like, "Man this process is just so crazy right?! It seems like everyone's experience is so unique in terms of how many interviews they get and where they get offers. I'm grateful that I got some interviews at sites that seem like they will be a good fit for me." Or something along those lines. I personally am going to try to refrain from giving specific names of places where I got interviews, because I think we all understand the seething pain that comes with reading on here that someone else got an interview at a site that you receive a rejection from. Well, imagine experiencing that feeling when the person who received it is standing right in front of you watching your facial expressions while processing that information. It just seems unnecessarily cruel for us to put each other through that. Just my two cents. But be ready for things to get weird 😛

I’ve always considered it an unwritten rule of sorts, a sense of assumed solidarity and consideration amidst an irrefutably stressful process, that people discuss it in a minimal fashion regardless of whether we have many interviews, a few interviews, or no interviews. I realize that reality doesn’t necessarily work that way, particularly as the most stressful part comes to a close, but that was my hope even one year ago when I was watching others go through this - I never asked them specifics or even brought up the topic. Then again, I’m not much of a conversationalist so maybe that assisted my holding back questions. ‍♂️ We are all in the same process but are each experiencing it differently, on both ends of the broad spectrum.

I totally agree with your point! Be thankful for what you have and what you don’t have. I’ve learned in life that when I don’t get what I want sometimes there’s a reason or something better in store for me. It’s all about perspective and gratitude.

Exactly! being grateful for what we have and having trust that things will work out the way they are supposed to be has been paramount to my calm demeanor throughout this process. As for my interactions with others - encouragement, support, and sensitivity have been key.

This is great advice. Be prepared to have an interviewer ask it too. Way back in the dark ages (as the imbalance was mounting) when I went on interviews I was asked specifically how many interviews and where by one person. I was so taken aback that I had no idea how to even respond. I don’t think it’s an appropriate question but it’s best to prepare for it so it doesn’t take you off your game.

Sleep is incredible and is very important in reframing. Last night I was ready to withdraw all of my applications and move into a dark cave for next year instead...today I am back on the interview prepping train and feeling good! Wishing you all great and restorative sleep as we move from this phase to the interviewing one 🙂

Sorry, guys. I posted impulsively and inconsideratelty and now I feel even worse for hurting feelings. Just a really tough time overall, riddled with uncertainty and self doubt and consciousnesses. Wishing everyone the best, always.

It's totally understandable! Every rejection feels like a rejection of yourself as a clinician and of your skills and talents. It's a hard balance to be sensitive between wanting to express how you are feeling and other people's sadness.

My sister and I actually had a massive fight last night. I was in a bad place and could NOT stop ranting/ being upset about not hearing from my current site..my sister is going through a similarly stressful application season right now (medical school) and perceived my ranting as not being respectful of the process SHE is going through. We are all on our own path and I sincerely hope things work out for you the way you have always dreamed.

Ok, that's what I'm assuming as well. This process is so weird. As someone mentioned earlier, I feel like I'm getting interviews at sites that seemed like less of a fit and getting rejections from the ones I thought were a sure thing!

At this point in time, with a shift in the imbalance, would you advise answering this question as it is asked by an interviewer or take it as a test of answering in a confident manner that is appropriate (i.e., not giving exact number or names)? I ask because I personally find this question inappropriate as well, and is wavering on the side of seeking information that could imply where they would/could be ranked - a topic that is definitely not permitted.

I would recommend having a confident answer that you are comfortable giving - whether that is a specific number or a vague number is up to you. The important aspect, in my opinion, is being prepared for it (particularly for those who don’t have as many interviews). In retrospect I’m willing to bet the interviewer just took it as a casual conversation topic (rather than seeking information to help with ranking), but at the time when I was a bundle of nerves and not expecting it, it threw me off.

The other day my husband said he was stressed and I asked what about and he said “waiting to see what sites WE’RE going to hear from”...y’all I must be extremely stressed if he’s living through it too he also brought home two boxes of chocolate yesterday. Upside of all this I guess haha

I agree and was thinking the same! How did the person who posted this scenario respond? It’s really an awkward and inappropriate question.

I don’t remember my exact response (it was a couple lifetimes ago for me at this point). I do remember my physiological and emotional response and stumbling through some half answer. Watching the connection between us fade as a response to my response and I left feeling off balance as a result. I didn’t match there, and honestly I’m glad I ended up where I did (even though that site would have meant being back with family and familiarity).

This whole process is stressful, hard, and magnified by our own experiences and filters. That’s part of what I do my best to mindful of now that I’m on the other side of it all.

Ehhh... if 13 or more is what you are shooting for, then great, but the mean number of interviews is 7 or so, with 89% matching in round 1 as I recall. I'm hoping for 8-9 at most because I can't afford travel and don't want to have to deal with the hassle of scheduling the phone interviews.

I have about five that haven’t sent any notifications, as far as I know, as well as a similar number that have sent some notifications but haven’t sent rejections.

I have a feeling that this is going to be a slower weekend in terms of notifications, in spite of the fact that there are many sites left to send notifications. I almost hope I'm proven wrong.

I hope not! It’s getting so close to the holidays. I wouldn’t want to be stuck in the house while everyone else is eating, drinking, enjoying holiday parties!

My boyfriend and I went to a holiday on Thursday and it was a really nice break from the internship notification process!

How common is it for sites to send out notifications during the weekend? This waiting game is awful :arghh:
Still waiting to hear from 12 sites, 4 of which I'm hoping will have a second wave of offers.

I’m surprised you haven’t heard from Kennedy Krieger - their initial email said they would inform everyone the evening of 11/19 and every one of my colleagues heard one way or another that day. Maybe they have a legitimate waitlist and there’s still hope.

I know a friend got an interview at University of Maryland Counseling Center today but I don't know the details

Yeah, heard from 4 or 5 UCC's this past week. Still have about 7 that I am waiting on, so the upcoming week should be pretty crazy.

Salem VA did rolling invites and the first notification was 11/9 (before their actual application due date). Does anyone know of any second waves? I have been assuming that they had sent out all their invites, but wanted to verify. Along with UF and Emory, they sent invites fairly early, but there hasn't been official rejections (mental rejection was a few days after their invites).

Oh, I don’t even recall a trauma track. Did you receive the email confirming that your application was under review and that they’d send everyone an email the evening of 11/19? It at least stated that they wanted to get everything scheduled prior to Thanksgiving.

I did not. The date i have for their notification is 12/20 i think, i dont know if i should email or not. If i wait till then that seems kind of late, but sitting around could be a bad move too....

Kennedy Krieger is the behavioral psych/Neuro program affiliated with Johns Hopkins, dealing mostly with Neurodevelopmental Disorders and such. Johns Hopkins has a counseling program I believe. Just want to make sure your app was successfully sent to them if you did apply to KKI. I just know, based on who I’ve spoken to, that applicants received this email (including myself):

Unless there is more than what shows up on APPIC(maybe in terms of accreditation), which I wouldn’t be aware of.

They also have a non-accredited trauma track. (Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress). I also applied to this. They say they have “applied for accreditation” but are not yet accredited, so I don’t believe they follow the same interview notification protocol as the rest of their accredited tracks. I also applied to their behavioral tracks and received both an email letting me know when I would hear back, and a rejection on 11/19. But I have received nothing regarding the trauma track, specifically. They updated their website to list their notification date as 12/20 a few weeks ago, so that’s what I’m anticipating. Hope this clears up all this confusion!

Ah that does make sense now and I clearly created the confusion. The site does explicitly state not accredited and also something ambiguous about APPIC membership, which is why it wasn’t popping up via search like the other one. I hope you two hear from this track soon!

Nope, I haven’t - and I did the USAjobs for those 3 as well (as did my cohort mate), so safe to say they haven’t sent an email yet 🙂

Has anyone received a rejection from the Indiana VA? I applied to both the Health and SMI tracks and have not heard anything.
