APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2020)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
One of my interviews is all day in-person. The problem is that I’m going to need to pump sometime during the interview day as I’m nursing. Is it appropriate to ask for accommodations as well as a specific time when I can step away and pump? Anyone gone through this before? I’m just not sure how to approach this situation!
First off going through this process with a little one I think makes you even more of a rock star! Although I have not been through this personally my mentor and DCT did and has talked about it quite a bit. I think it is definitely appropriate to ask for a time to be able to step away and if they are not willing to accommodate I think that gives you data about the culture of the site that may be nice to know prior to ranking. Good luck at your interview!

YES, that is totally ok to ask for those accommodations!!!! I would just email the TD directly and inform them of your needs. And like others have said, if they are anything other than gracious, understanding, and accommodating, then that is, in my opinion, a huge red flag against the site and their office/training culture.

Got a no from Danielsen yesterday. Very warm and authentic rejection email though! Wishing luck to those who interview there, they seem great!

Random question: do people think it is acceptable to bring a backpack to an interview or is it unprofessional? I will have to catch a flight right after one interview, and I plan to carry a portfolio to the actual interview after dropping the backpack somewhere, maybe the front desk or staff lounge.

I was just at an interview this week (yes - so early) and someone had a backpack (instead of a purse) with them and it wasn't weird at all. Several other with luggage.

Received an interview via personal email yesterday -offered only one date which was a date I had already committed for another interview. They said all other dates were booked and not able to move me or do a phone interview - pretty bummed and disappointed.
The same thing happened to me with a different site. It's very disappointing. 🙁

What is the risk of interviewing if you decide not to rank? Also, what did you hear from APA? I am curious (although it doesn't change anything for me since I'm sitting in the airport already). I wish I had more than a day's notice before my travel plans so I could at least try to determine what my options were in a better way. Oh well.

Some of this is related to my program, which will surely vary for each of us. I also agree that an interview, if travel plans are non-refundable, is innocuous other than the time spent engaging in it. Some information regarding missed opportunities to avoid probation are noted on APA's website. Via phone, I discovered that the next meeting date, which would review their status (e.g., remove probation or remove accreditation), is not until April. I am not permitted to rank a site with this type of risk, so that is why I have chosen to accept the sunk costs and save my time. The worst part is that they could certainly regain full accreditation and I really like the site on paper. It's just an unfortunate situation for everyone involved, with politics running parallel to everything.

How are people dealing with the rejections? I have yet to receive an interview and my confidence is sufficiently squashed...
I've heard the rejections are often sent out first before the interviews. I'm generally handling it by writing it up to fit, tbh. My application is a pretty good picture of who I am as a person and as a clinician, so if the site doesn't give me an interview it's likely I wouldn't enjoy their site anyway.

Definitely ask! We've had people request time for this and we've arranged this without a problem. I would recommend asking ahead of time so that things can be moved around in advance, if needed. I had someone ask me the day of (she said she was nervous to ask!) and we absolutely still made accommodations for her but it would've been easier to know ahead of time.

Got an invite! But I will be keeping the specifics on the DL. I've learned there is/are a/some creeper(s) with nefarious intentions on here.

Isn't that why there's the option to share the invite more anonymously with Grenth via DM?

That's not good! You should report him/her/them to an admin if that is the case. Sorry you have had a bad experience due to sharing your good news! Congrats on another interview!

I feel like @neurocog's statement can't just be thrown around like that without some explanation/detail. Looks like it's caused a wave of panic here.
I agree. I'm just going to take it with a grain of salt because like another poster said, I can't think of what anyone woud be able to even do with people's invite posts.

I imagine neurocog’s nefarious creeper is related to something personal and has no effect on the rest of you. Don’t put much stock into it. And don’t add any more unnecessary stress worrying about it!

If you haven’t been reminded today yet - you’re all doing great and are going to end up where you are supposed to be.

As a separate but arguably important point, invitations are used to create the master list (which can also be accomplished via DM to Grenth for those who would rather avoid drawing attention to themselves in the thread). This list is not only informative to us, but will be viewed by future cohorts to determine general site patterns, notification dates, etc. I view the master list as a service to those who will eventually go through this anxiety-provoking process. And if any concerning activity is occurring, it should be reported - I feel that this site is likely monitored quite well and those in charge would be responsive to such reports.

Yeah, this seems weird. If anyone feels threatened or that there is a TOS violation, please send a message to the moderators. I honestly have no idea what someone could conceivably do with invite/rejection information, but if it's actionable, let the mods know and they can take appropriate action. In the meantime, take a deep breath, the process will do what needs to be done.

...I check this site almost more than I check my email

I just want us all to get along! This thread has been such a wonderful and positive resource. I don’t know if I can handle this community imploding right now! Can we hold off until like maybe 12/20/2019 at the earliest? PLEASE!

*feel free to insert “she doesn’t even go here!” Mean Girls meme reference in response*

For those of you who got this, is anyone planning to contact APPIC to see if this would qualify for a refund? Per my DCT, I'm going to have to withdraw my application from this site now.
My DCT is a graduate of this internship program, and she suggested I still request a video interview (for child track--they offered this to me, by the way) and rank the site if I like it, even if it is last. Her reasoning was that, although probation comes after an initial warning (that evidently was not followed through on for at least some of the initial requests for change), the likelihood of a program this large and established becoming unaccredited is very low.
Before speaking with her, however, I had been strongly considering contacting APPIC -- especially given the notification 1 day prior to many people traveling to the interview. :/

Yes, some of the invites even say something about emailing them if in need of any accommodations. I know someone who is also requesting this (framing it as being postpartum and requiring occasional breaks throughout the day). Presumably, they will all know what this means. 🙂 Best of luck!

Anyone heard about interview or rejection from Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago?
Nothing for me yet... However, I just noticed that on the original post in this thread (which the author seems to keep updating) it does say someone got an invite for Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago (it's listed in the A's) on 11/25.

Oh, screw it. I'm putting my invites back up. Admittedly I panicked when I saw the earlier post about someone being a creeper and potentially doing something nasty with the invite info people shared. But now I'm just irritated that I allowed my joy to be stolen for even a second. I'm proud of this step in my career. Period. Not gonna hide it, creepers or no creepers.

Agreed. Lets all take a deep long breath. We don't have our names on here anyway and I don't see how posting your invites can be harmful in any way. Lets continue supporting each other and not incite panic. We should also avoid posting mysterious posts. If you don't want to post, just don't post anything.

Agreed! For all we know, it could be a personal issue. Or they may have shared too many personal details about their life that may have made their identity obvious. I really don’t think people should panic without context.
