APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2020)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Question for the ladies out there - are you all sticking with solid black suits? I really don't feel like myself in an uncomfortable business suit and so I ordered a couple of relaxed, neutral but non-black jackets to pair with black slacks. I still look super professional and I don't mind standing out for dressing a bit more characteristically, but I, of course, do not want to be seen as the girl who went against the internship interview grain. Thoughts?
I was looking for charcoal but ended up going with a navy suit. My school requires we do the formal suit thing with matching slacks and blazer. I assume I'll need it for post-doc/job interviews next year, too.

Congrats! And thank you for being so prompt to upload this. I was actually unsure of whether it had been a mistake or not as they had 12/15 as their notification date lol. Anywho, I have a question for you, related to DENVER HEALTH.... (if you have any idea that is)... My questions is, I too received an email but mine did not specify the track. Have you heard of anyone else who did not get a track? I received different dates so this makes me think that it is not for the HRSA track.
Mine told me that I was being considered for both of the tracks I applied for and to let them know if I didn’t want to be considered for one of those tracks. Did you apply to multiple tracks, too? For another site I applied to I ended up contacting them to clarify which tracks I would be interviewing for and it was received well. I’d recommend reaching out when you confirm your interview date or even after I’d youve already done that.

One of my friends felt the same way when she applied a few years back and ended up pairing a grey blazer with black pants or a nice skirt for most of her interviews. She said she didn’t feel like she stuck out. I think as long as it’s generally conservative you should go with what makes you feel the most comfortable and confident to rock your interviews 🙂

I saw lots of people dressed like this last year when I made the interview rounds. I interviewed at all VAs.

And for the person who was worried about the gray suit. That’s also totally fine!

Last year I primarily wore a black dress with a dark, colored blazer and it was just fine. I think you’ll be okay!

It was going downhill for a second today as I'm on like my 5th rejection (lost count). But then this came in!!!! Whoooo hooooo - there is hope in the world. I was so down in the dumps today given someone who is the most unprofessional person, sells CBD oil at work, talks about their previous job working the pole, curses at clients and name calls them (even calls them a$$$$$) got a job I wanted at my clinic. Mind you she has a masters in some random topic and wants to be a social worker....and i'm here like WTF am I doing working at this dump. BUT NOW IT'S COMING TOGETHER!!!

Official Site Name: Centerstone Consortium
Date Invitation Received: 12.5.19
Method of Invitation (Phone call, personal/mass email, snapchat): email
Specialty Track or Site (e.g., for consortiums): Consortium
Offered Interview Dates: Jan 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th, 30th, 31st and Feb 6th - And Dec 20th by popular demand
(In honor of last year) If & How you're staying sane: Reminding myself "This too shall pass" at work and gossiping with the nurse from work who has become a silent cheerleader for my progress in my Phd program
Congrats!! For which site/track in the consortium is this for? Their appic page specifies that the sites within the consortium coordinate interview days separately. Thanks!

One of my interviews is all day in-person. The problem is that I’m going to need to pump sometime during the interview day as I’m nursing. Is it appropriate to ask for accommodations as well as a specific time when I can step away and pump? Anyone gone through this before? I’m just not sure how to approach this situation!

Please ask! This is not uncommon. You also want to know how a potential employer handles these requests. Best of luck to you.

I plan on doing something similar (wearing black slacks with a neutral color blazer/jacket). I also know of others who are not planning on wearing strictly black suits to all their interviews.
I got a maroon skirt suit and two nice navy/green dresses for my warmer locales, along with the usual black and gray suits, but with black and cream plaid pants or a light pink top. I feel like you can be professional and still wear color/prints and I wanted to be me at the interviews.

I stated I was interested in Allcare and Centerstone locations on my cover letter - but the email stated I was invited to consider all sites given interests change through internship interview process. I thought this was interesting given they requested certain supplemental info for the sites. I only submitted a comprehensive psychological evaluation (adult) so not sure if I am still able to consider some of the child/adult tracks since I did not submit a child evaluation.

I'm wearing all black but that's more a function of the fact that I only wear black anyways. I think you can look professional and proFRESHional at the same time.

I'm more concerned about the shoe situation. Why are heels still a thing, they are not conducive to site tours. I got a short stacked heel but I might hit up a nice boot instead.

I interviewed last year, and the attire changed between sites. Interviewees at a (pretty prestigious) academic medical center wore grey and black suits, period, while interviewees at a private practice/community mental health consortium wore dress pants and jackets or sweaters of all colors... so it may depend where you're interviewing how much your choice will differ from those around you.

I wore ballet flats. My pant legs for the suits were “skinny” so ballet flats went fine. In places with snow, I wore snow boots and changed into flats once indoors.

I'm just wearing comfy flats. A number of the brochures and interview invite emails from sites have said to wear comfortable shoes for facility tours and/or winter weather. I think professional dress (rather than business/business casual) is still expected for interviews, but I think not wearing heels is fine.

I’m wearing flats! This girl does not do heels for ANY occasion

Anyone heard back from Kennedy Krieger Institute/Johns Hopkins Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress/Psychiatric Mental Health Program Doctoral Internship? I’m particularly interested in the child and family trauma track. It looks like they updated the APPIC directory saying they received 23 apps and offered 20 interviews. Not sure if this data is accurate. Maybe they are waiting to contact applicants closer to the cut off on the 15th? Thought I’d ask anyway!

I believe those stats are presented by intern class, aka last year's applicants?
PS also waiting to hear from them!

Those stats are from last application cycle, which makes since because they just recently received accreditation (on contingency I think). I was going to apply but good luck to you!

I am also waiting to hear back, hopefully soon. I think they started sending invitation a few weeks ago....

Yes, not wearing heels is fine (from someone who's been on both sides of this process) 🙂

Did anybody else who applied to University of Tennessee HSC and indicated interest in St. Jude get an invite to submit to the St. Jude national graduate student symposium? I'm trying to figure out if that was sent out to anyone who expressed interest in that site or just some subset...

I expressed interest in St Jude and did not receive this invite so sounds like good news for you! Congrats!

My DCT (who is a woman) actually advised that we wear something that stood out a little bit and not a black on black or all one color suit like everyone else. She said it gives people something to remember in addition to our qualifications. Hope this helps...good luck at your interviews!

Waiting on ATL VA as well. But they had to extend their deadline so I'm thinking it won't be until next week. Last year they sent out on the 5th.

Sooo confused! I saw on the first page of this form that people had heard from University of Denver GSPP Consortium (Child and Family Track) back in mid-November. I didn't hear anything, so I assumed I didn't get an interview and considered it a rejection. Today I got an e-mail from the TD that my application materials were received, and I would hear back by Dec. 16th. Despite this, I believe they only interview for this track on Dec. 15th and 16th!

Anyone here have an interview for that track on those days? Or in the same boat with a different site? I guess you really can't rule anything out until you hear something 🤔
