Pup: I'm in California and nothing yet.

I got accepted today to Purdue for developmental studies. So my stress level is way down. At least I know I'm going somewhere!!!!!!

Psych: Another interview? woohooo for you!!!!!

Twiggers - Congrats on the offer from Purdue. With whom are you meeting at Indiana? Did she give you any idea about the timing for interviews/offers in general?

Congratualations, Twiggers! Looks like you're the first to get an actual acceptance! 👍

I have an interview at Notre Dame (2/25 for all psych programs), if that was what you were referring to about Indiana. If you mean Indiana - Bloomington, then I was told that they start calling this week/next week and I haven't heard anything yet.

Thanks winnie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's technically not clinical, but I'll take it lol. They do alot of work with high risk populations (children specifically) looking at intervention/prevention programs.

I was looking at my notes about Loyola-Chicago....their interviews are 2/11 and 2/18....so I'm starting to get a little bummed about that school.

Also just saw on another board that Minnesota has sent out their letters.

I already know I was not invited to interview at Fordham. But when are they going to send me the official rejection letter? Unless I had called, I never would have found out I was being interviewed. So when do they notify of rejections for most places? I can't imagine they keep you hanging on until April 1, right?

I just got a phone call from Midwestern University and they notified me that I have been accepted! I interviewed 2 weeks ago. I am excited to have 1 acceptance. I am still waiting to hear about interviews for GWU and Rosalind Franklin (Finch).

I'm waiting for Rosalind Franklin also--be sure to post if you hear anything!

FYI for anyone interested, W. MI interview weekend is March 11th-12th. I just got a phone call from the woman I applied to work with, YAY!! 🙂

Congrats Capeetan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had a formal phone interview with Milwaukee today, and another scheduled for next week. I thought it went pretty good. He said decisions are made very quickly after 2/11 interview date.

Had a conversation with professor from Madison (human development though) and it went good. He said decisions are made next week.

COnfirmed admission with Purdue today 🙂 Probably gonna fly out there in March.

Minnesota joint program said all letters go out next week.

Urbana-Champaign said they're almost done inviting. Only a couple people left to invite (guess it's not me).

Loyola-Chicago said they're done inviting.

Temple gave me same ole answer of still reviewing. But honestly I think they're done.

I called SDSU today and they said that their invitations were sent by mail yesterday. If anyone who applied there hears anything, let me know!

I have a friend at work who applied there.....so let me know if you hear anything and I'll let you know if she hears anything. Shoot....from San Diego she could get her letter by tomorrow since we're in Sacramento.

I'm in LA, so I'm hoping they mailed them out late yesterday and that it's not a bad sign that I didn't get mine today....

Well...got my first rejection letter from Urbana-Champaign today. Oh well :-(

I don't know if anyone is applying here, haven't seen this name too much, but their interview date is Feb. 25th. Has anyone heard anything about this program?

Hey Sunny-my former roommate is a first-year there and she loves it. There are a ton of great people there and the program is supposed to be really good too. Good luck!

my roommate had the same concerns. however, once she got out there she was pleasantly surprised to find out that reno has a lot of diversity. which is usually the way it is in towns where the major population is made up of students. so lots of different things to do, good variety of activities, and good weather 🙂 . who are you wanting to work with there?

Reno is well...Reno lol Lots of gambling....Tahoe is close, and Sacramento is only a couple of hours away.

I got invites today from Bowling Green and North Dakota. I had to decline in person ones because they were both the same weekend as Notre Dame. Then Bowling Green came back and asked if I could go 3/18, which is the same weekend as 2 of my finals. Ugh.

i am really interested i the trauma & domestic violence research they are doing there, so i mentioned a lot of faculty members in my statement. i have been trying to look up the weather in reno, is it supposed to be nice? i am from upstate ny, so don't think this should be a concern, but i heard they had 20 feet of snow last year and am trying to find verification! (i feel that weather should not be a deciding factor, but...) 😀

Well...I gamble in Reno about once every 3 months. This Xmas we were going to go there, but the major pass (Donner Summit) to get into Nevada was closed due to 12 feet of snow. Reno does not get as much snow as the higher elevations do.
It is incredibly hot in the summer, but it is not humid..it is a desert dry heat...and not as hot as the valley of California (where I live).
They have a wonderful hot air balloon festival every summer, as well as Hot August Nights which is a hot rod car festival.
I like Reno.....it's fun to visit. Of course.....my opinion is based on numerous hours spent in front of a slot machine lol

I got my first (official) rejection letter today from SDSU...at least they didn't keep me hanging on for too long!

awww I'm sorry pup :-( But I hear ya about waiting...I'd rather get a "no" letter now than be kept hanging.

Hey everyone,

Just got contacted by email from GWU (clinical) about an interview.
They are Feb. 28th or March 4th. Hope that helps!
This is my first - let me know if you have any tips
🙂

I had my first interview with a clinical program and someone suggested that I ask questions about the projects they are currently working on and the direction they are headed in over the next few years. This was a good thought, because of the time lapse between manuscript submissions and publication dates, sometimes it is hard to figure out what they are working on now. Good luck!

Also, Twiggers -- I grew up in So. Cal, where in CA are you?

Sunny: I am in Stockton right now....about 45 minutes south of Sacramento 🙂 It's the armpit of California lol Can't wait to get out!

hey laxyhead,
Is this for the PsyD program at GWU? If so when did you get the e-mail? Did you talk to anyone at the program?

Thanks

hey el capeeetan,

The GWU interview notification was for the clinical Ph.D program. i got the email on Saturday from a faculty member who was on the admissions board. hope that helps!

btw: SDSU/UCSD mailed notifications out this weekend and i was also glad the rejection came so soon. oh well, it's all good =)

good luck everyone!

Thank you for the info laxyhead. Good luck with the interview. I was curious because I have applied to the PsyD program at GWU. Thanks for replying.

I've got a dilemma....if anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it:

I've got an interview at Notre Dame on 2/25, but two other schools emailed syaing that their dates were on the same day. I emailed back one of the schools saying I couldn't make it that weekend due to prior commitments. The graduate secretary emailed back asking if I could do 3/18. I had to decline because it is my finals weekend (yes my stupid school does finals on a Saturday, of which I have 2 on the Sat. and one on the Fri.). I stated that I would love to speak with the faculty, and was excited about the prospects of attending the program, etc. etc. Well she emailed back this morning saying that the head of committee wants to meet me in person, and can I do another weekend.

Dilemma time- I'm accepted at Purdue, and interviewing at ND (where they're paying for it). The school is in Ohio and I'm not really that excited about it, but I want to keep all my options available. Therefore, since i'm not jumping up and down about it I can't see spending $400 on plane fare (yes my old dilemma from a while back).
So I emailed her back saying that every other weekend, but those two, I was available....but that my other issue was the cost associated with flying to Ohio.
Was that a big booboo?
I did tell her I wanted to talk to the professors and that I was excited about the program.

I just feel like the issue was forced upon me....and now I've been put in a yucky spot.
All the other schools that I've been asked to interview at were fine with telephone interviews, and I did email this school before I applied to ask if they did phone interviews and they said yes. Now apparently it's not OK.

Or....maybe if they're that excited to talk to me in person they should cough up the money 🙂

Arg.....what would you guys do in my position??

Twiggers: I just had to make the same decision.

I have been invited for six interviews, and I am still waiting to hear from three schools that I really want to go to (I actually applied to 15 total, but I know that since I have these offers, I am definitely going to opt for phone interviews at my other less-exciting programs).

😕 A school that I am not all that excited about invited me for interview and they do not do phone interviews. So, basically it was either "come here and interview" or "don't get in at all."

I had already purchased two plane tickets, and I am renting a car to drive to another interview. Thankfully, one interview is here in my city, and another only does phone interviews before offering acceptances. Then, you are kind of expected to visit the campus. I am kinda couting on getting into this one, so I know I'll have to purchase another plane ticket.

You will have to prioritize! That's what I was forced to do. Yeah, you are taking a chance, but you already have been accepted to Purdue, and if the chances are that you'll pick Purdue over the Ohio school, you might as well decline. Think about the long-run (that'd you probably won't go there if you are accepted).

I hope this helps. Believe me, I agonized over the decision to decline the interview all this weekend. It's tough!!!!

I know!!!!!!!!!!!! You'd think that these places realize that ALL the schools are doing interviews the end of this month/beginning of March. ARg Arg Arg

Right now my priority is Notre Dame and Purdue. I am hoping Notre Dame comes through.....but then the agonizing part will be choosing which school to attend. Although, I guess I'm counting my eggs before they hatch.

So far besides Notre Dame, all the schools inviting me have been my middle/bottom schools. I really only had one top school (Minnesota -which is sending out acceptance/denial letters this week) and the rest were kinda "whatever" schools....just hoping to get into one. Out of the ones who have invited me Notre Dame is the top choice. Purdue is up there, but the program is not clinical, or even psychology so that is where I am stuck.....the research is similar to a psych program.
Ugh...can't this all end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My hubby said the same as you psych...."if you know you won't go there just decline and save the profs the time". I considered that, but I really do want to keep my options open.

I still have 11 schools left to hear from.....this could start getting ugly if I start getting a bunch of invites. Or I could get none and then it's really easy. Purdue here I come lol

Hi everyone. I'm new to this site, so I apologize if I repeat something that can be found somewhere else. I've been reading through and you're all so helpful!
I heard from Delaware about a week ago -- interviews February 25, 28 and March 4th.
Has anyone heard from UMaryland College Park or UMBC?

welcome, js05! Congrats on your Delaware interview and good luck!

I received a call Monday (2/7) and was invited to interview on March 11th. I was told that I would receive a letter in the mail explaining the whole interview day. I guess it is pretty much an all day interview. I am excited because this is one of my top choices!!!!
Good Luck to everyone!

who do you want to work with at Delaware?

I applied to UMBC, and I haven't heard anything yet either. I also emailed them to find out when their interview dates were, but no response.

I had my interview at Temple yesterday, and I thought it went really well. All the people were so nice, warm, and friendly and it was really not as stressful as I thought it would be. I'd say it was a pretty good intro to the interview process. Any other thoughts from people who may have interviewed there?

I didn't apply to Temple, but I am curious about what the interview was like? Was it all day? Were there alot of other applicants? I am going to my first on site interview next week and am trying to prepare as best I can.

When you met with individual faculty members, did they ask you questions about their research? Thanks!

Updates on Midwest Schools:

Minnesota - joint program emails sent out today. I was rejected. Bummer since it was my #1 choice.

Wayne State - contacting for interviews right now. 3/4 interview day. Secretary was able to tell me over the phone that I got an invite.

Michigan State - done inviting

Northern Illinois - Meeting tomorrow at 11 AM. Invites going out via email shortly thereafter.

That was all II was able to get ahold of today.

So far I am at : 5 interviews, 1 acceptance, 2 denials, and 4 that I didn't get invites from that I am treating as denials.

Congrats Capeetan!!!!!!!!!!!! But hey if worse comes to worse, at least you're in at Northwestern!

What was everyone dressed like at the Temple interview? All business suits, or some business casual???

IN addition: I completed my interviews at Milwaukee. These were the questions I was asked:

Why this school?
What does scientist-practioner mean to you?
Why scientist-practioner vs. clinical-science?
What hurdles do you see yourself having to overcome in grad school?
What do you do when you get stressed out? (I liked this one....I was honest and said I like to go to the woods and ride around on my ATV...it opened up another conversation about life in Milwaukee, etc. made it kind of relaxing)

Fionally.....why do you want to leave California for Milwaukee?

They opened up the interview with an informal question asking what led me to where I am today.

Hope this helps anyone. No one really asked what I want to study, or what I am studying. I just put that stuff in myself where I could.

hey twiggers,

sorry about minnesota, that sucks!! at least you have one acceptance, i am still hoping for one! i wanted to ask you (and everyone else on the board) how you answered the question about scientist-practitioner vs. clinical scientist? i have no idea how i would answer it, if i was to get it! 🙂

Well I basically said that I thought an integration of research/practice was important as a researcher. That I felt it was essential to have a working knowledge of what the practitioners were doing. Ie; if I do research concerning ADHD behavioral therapy, I would need to know what the practitioners could actually do with it. Basically making my research applicable to not only other researchers, but also the clinicians.

I was a little bit more detailed in my answer....and I tailored my example to what the professor was studying...but that was the main gist.

The interview was a half-day affair. There was a morning session and an afternoon session with an overlapping lunch and info session about funding, research, admissions, etc.

I was in the afternoon session, and there were about 15(ish) other applicants there. Basically, we all mingled in this one room, until it was time for the interviews. All the grad students in the first yr. and a lot of older years were there to answer questions, provide moral support for nervous people, etc.
It was a very warm, and friendly atmosphere. There were 4 half-hour interviews for each applicant followed by a tour. Two interivews were with faculty (one you chose and another random one), and 2 with grad students. It felt very informal...the students were pretty laid back, neither of them nor the two faculty I met with took notes or had notes on what they wanted to ask me. It sort of seemed like they were just trying to decide how "normal" I was. They said chemistry of the students in the program is a big thing, so I think they were trying to size up how I would mesh with the others who were already in the lab I was trying to get into (Marx).
Good news was that my chosen faculty member told me he was very impressed with my application and he didn't really have any questions for me. He said he didn't think I could impress him anymore than I had through my app. I was floored!
He just wanted to know what questions I had for him. The grad students asked about my research interests, what potential research project I would be interested in doing if I came there, and what aspects of the mentor's research appealed to me.

Twiggers: Most applicants were dressed in black or grey business suits. I wore a black suit with a skirt. About half the women wore pants. A few people were dressed more casually, and I personally thought they looked a little sloppy compared to the people who were really dressed nicely.

Hope this helps!

Oh, and I also just got a call from Yeshiva's Ferkauf Graduate School to interview for the Clinical-Health psychology PhD program! weee!

The interview days are next week, Feb 14-17, or this Thursday, Feb 10, or Feb 22. The woman who called said it is a just 1 one-on-one interview for half an hour with a faculty they assign you.

Good luck to everyone!

I thought GWU only had a clinical PsyD program. Is the PhD a new program there?

I got a call from a student at Adelphi University tonight inviting me to interview there. The interviews take place between Feb 28 - March 11. They do group interviews there to added your social skills, and interpersonal style. Has anyone heard about this?

Apparently they don't have you meet with faculty other than the one who moderates the group interviews.

Also got a call from Marquette from a grad student. Interviews are 2/18 and 2/25. Yikes..talk about no notice for someone flying from across the country. I have to call them back tomorrow to see what is up with that. There is definitely no way I could go out there on such short notice....even if I could afford it the airfare would kill me (*and I've already committed 2/25 to Notre Dame).

GWU has a PhD in clicnical psychology which is very heavy on the research side and highly regarded in acamdamia and research.

Then they also have the PsyD program which is heavy on the clinical practice side. I have met with professors and students from both programs and the 2 programs are almost polar opposites from eachother and I got the feeling that there may be some friction between the 2 programs, but I do not know that for sure. Both programs are great for their specific areas of focus.

Case Western is done inviting people. I thought I actually stood a chance of an interview there....oh well.

Missouri-St. Louis said they will be contacting via email & phone between this Friday and next Friday for interviews on 3/4 & 3/11.

Also called Indiana-Bloomington and the secretary said she had no clue. Guess I'll just have to wait around for that rejection letter.

Tried UConn but couldn't get anyone on the phone. I think I would have been contacted by now.

After those schools I just have 2 left that don't interview and I will have heard something from all 20 of my schools. Yippee!

Also the one that I had to tell them I couldn't fly out still hasn't emailed me back after that last email I sent. So I emailed them back again and she said she is still waiting to hear from the chair of the department. I'm kinda annoyed since I got a call from a school in Detroit that wants me to fly out 3/4 and is covering airfare. I've semi-committed myself to that school, and it is not leaving me with very many open weekends if this school in Ohio comes through and says they want to fly me out. Ugh.
Between interviews and finals I have exactly 2 weekends free between now and the end of March. I guess time will fly by since I'll be so busy!
