It's like playing a game of monopoly and the banker has rigged the game against you. I have no idea what the MGMA data is for 2025 but I'd wager to say that I'm in the 90% (TOTAL COMP >700k) a year at a stable job (not locums, I can't understand how anyone with a family can do locums or if it is actually financially beneficial in the end but that's another story). My wife also has a stable good income job. Together we bring in about 35-37k in cash a month after maxing retirements. I've been out of practice for a few years now and I do not feel rich, if anything I still feel like we are just getting by.
It's just completely hopeless for new attendings to make it in this country.
Housing:
Despite all our hard work, our parents still needed to help us with the down payment. We had no choice but to take a deplorable 6.7% 30 year mortgage out, and even with 20% down our true PITI is about $24,000 a month. We've had costly repairs along the way. And yes, this is for pretty average house around in the Southern Peninsula.
Nanny/Daycare:
One child, another on the way. Nanny cost is 6k a month, and will go up to 7k a month with our other child. We may need to resort to daycare.
Food:
We cook everything at home.
Student Loans:
Currently on SAVE. With RAP, I'm looking at 5k a month? Maybe more?
Trips:
None recently. None planned.
Clothing/other expenses:
Everything we get these days is for the child(ren).
There's nothing left over to save after this. We work to pay the bills while tech cashes out on RSU, private equity and venture capitalism gets to pay capital gains only taxes, business owners write off everything through the company, etc. Too many years of QE allowed housing prices to go insane, and now between mortgage rates / insane housing prices and nanny/daycare, we can barely afford to make it. This is just insane to me, and it's such a shame that the previous generation has pulled the rug on the present generation and made it impossible to move up in life.
