Hi, I am from Toronto, Canada and I just wanted to know what the Atlantic Bridge Program is. I know that it is for Irish med schools but:

1. What are the entry requirements when applying via the ABP?
2. is it better to do pre-med??
3. Is it hard to get in Irish med schools?

Thanks.

Happy to help with info if you still need later but probably best to search "Atlantic Bridge" in SDN and peruse the countless posts on this from the past. Then come back if you have additional specific questions. No offense but AB has been flogged aplenty in this forum.

Sorry mate, loooked everywhere.. couldn't find wht i was looking for... is it possible that u can answer my questions??

Just take a bit of initiative, and you will get far on this site :D

Just in case you are still having trouble with this, in order
1) There are no fixed entry tequirements for admission when applying via ABP. Some schools require the MCAT (UCC for one) and some do not (e.g. Trinity). YOu must have an undergraduate degree to apply for the 5 year programs. You should have a reasonable GPA (i.e. not a 2.0).
2) Doing premed confers no advantage as far as I can see. Most countries don't have a premed program as such, this seems to be an American thing, so don't worry if your degree is not premed./ I have a BA in medieval studies and am a 5th year at UCC>
3) Hard is such a relative term. I got in on the first try after failing miserably in Canada 3 years in a row. Many people do not get in here. I think the odds are 1/15 or thereabouts. However, consider that at one school I applied to I had a 1/4 chance of getting in and still ended up at UCC - getting into med school is a crap shoot and always will be.
Good luck,
M

med2ucc,

If you dont mind me asking what were your stats like?

thanks,

med2ucc,

If you dont mind me asking what were your stats like?

thanks,

I don't mind sharing at all. Keep in mind this was 5 years ago and the standards may be tougher now. I know my odd background helped me get in as I was told this by the then admissions officer (my BA in medieval studies and my odd hobbies and work background swung it, but mostly the BA apparently).
So, with those caveats,
MCAT of 28 (PS8, BS9, VR11, writing sample R or S, can't remember at this point).
GPA: 3.56. 2 best years 4.0, 3.7 (stupid calculus, stupid C++, stupid organic chemistry wrecking a perfectly good GPA). Cumulative GPA with my BA included around 2.4 (don't ask-it was fun, interesting but not productive of good marks for med school).
Hobbies: Stained glass design and construction, glass fusing and slumping, gardening, archery, painting, Ukrainian egg design and dying.
Volunteer activities: Arts Trainer, 1st Aider and Guide Leader with Girl Guides of Canada, play room volunteer at the IWK Children's Hospital in Halifax, Strategic Planning Committee at Springvale Elementary School, Halifax.
Work History highlights: Museum Interpreter/Naturalist, Museum of Natural History, Halifax (among my jobs were walking the 86 year old gopher tortoise, Gus, identifying specimens brought in by members of the public, running the butterfly pavilion and performing the bug cooking show daily)
Co-ordinator, Special Needs Information Service, Halifax (maintained a database of services available for the parents of children with special needs, answered enquiries, managed volunteers for helpline).
Lab Assistant, SMU: helped run physiology labs, histology labs, anatomy labs and chemistry labs for undergrads at Saint Mary's University.
Ran two businesses, one a summer day camp for elementary school aged children in the Halifax area and one selling local artwork.
Also on my resume: landscaping, waitressing, child care and a stint as a manual labourer.
It's been an odd but fun life so far. Can't wait to see where medicine takes me!
Cheers,
M
Sorry, the more tired I get the more I type. This would have been a much shorter answer tomorrow morning.

Hey, so what if I want to apply to Irish schools with a high school diploma?? Is it possible?? What are the chances of getting in there?? Also, is the selection for Canadian students similar to that of the Canadian universities (top six grade 12 course etc.)??

Thanks,
Vpv

Yes you can apply from high school, to the 6 year programs (and maybe the 5 year program at UCC, although you might have to do the premed year, converting it to 6 years). as for what they use for the cut-offs, and how they select, as above, we don't know as none of us are on the admission committees. I don't know anyone at UCC who came from North America from high school. but RCSI definitely accepts this way (see the highschool RCSI thread). Cheers,
M
