For all those East Coast Canadians out there just wanted to wish a HUGE good luck in the upcoming week!! Dr. Singh said we should hear by June 15th....so it won't be long now! 🙂

It sucks, but it's not so bad. I have some decent classes lined up at Dalhousie this year (if you don't count having to take the second half of O Chem, grrr), plus most of my friends are still there. I think my marks are good enough to get me an interview again next year, and now I have the experience doing the interview. Plus I'll spend some more time bulking up my experience. Things could be worse. 😳

Good luck to everyone! I'm guessing it'll be a rejection for me. I hate how my interview went.

I had the same feeling when I got out of my interview. Don't worry, I have a feeling we're not the only one who feels that way...stay positive! 🙂

Yay, someone else! I'm trying to stay positive, but also trying not to get my hopes up. Which is hard when dealing with the chorus of "Oh you'll get in!" from friends and family.

I also think that their main goal during interview is not to make you feel confortable , they want to get to know who you are as a person and they also want to know how you will react when things are ''out of control''. Keeping that in mind, you may think that you did not did good as you felt they were not responstive but in fact that did that on purpose to see how you react to this specific situation...

Whatever the outcome of iterviews is, ...worst case is 12 month of doing something else or improving your application...it is not that bad according to me . 12 month for a great 30-40 years career

Stay positive🙂

Hang in there, Coquette22! I've given up on worrying out loud, because everyone keeps saying, "oh, don't worry, you'll definitely get in!" Now I'm just trying to keep busy and distract myself, but I know I'll be on tenterhooks until I find out.

I'm specifically trying to keep busy. I managed this pretty well for about the first week. Now, I'm not as busy with work, and the days are kind of dragging on. Another eight days. I have no idea how I'll get through the next eight days. (Newfie girl, I have NO idea how you're handling the wait! You've been waiting for over a month!)

I just hope I'm not waitlisted. I hope it's an acceptance (obviously! 😛), but otherwise, I'd rather be rejected. Waitlisting makes things so much more difficult. I have loan forms to get in, and housing to find...

I know how you guys feel! with each day that passes I think I did worse and worse on my interview. We will know soon enough!

Its weird though, because I know that I will be happy and sad about certain things whether or not I get in... so with me it is pretty much the not being able to plan for my future at the moment that is difficult to deal with. I just want to know if I should buy a house here or in Charlottown!...

I agree, I think waitlisted would be even more difficult to handle than a rejection... unless it was a very short waitlist!

Oh my god thats exactally the same way I feel!! Like to a T!!! 🙂 Obviously I'd be extatic if I got in, but leaving friends, family, a career, and teammates will be super rough. 🙁 And then there's not getting in...which delays life for 1 more year 🙁 hahaha ohhh lord I would just love to know one way or the other haha. I hate feeling like I'm in purgitory here haha

And yeah it's been a SUPER long wait for me. 6 weeks now haha It's almost painful answering the same question almost every day: "hear anything yet about vet school?" hahaha And then getting the standered "I'm sure you'll get in" or "They'd be crazy not to take you" haha

This is a pretty crazy time in all our lives....very unstable, but hopefully everything will fall into place for us in the next week 🙂

GOOD LUCK ALL! 😀

Anybody knows about average number of person they pick on the waitlist? I never heard anything about that but I figure that since we can only apply to one school (as Canadian applicants) it should not moove much?

Also, application process is so demanding that if you are not sure you want to do that , you just don't apply I guess

I was volunteering a few months ago and I talked to a vet who was wait listed on her first application year. She said there were only two people on the waiting list that year, but she still didn't get in. She was a NS applicant, so I'm guessing that was a NS applicant wait list.

You can defer for a year if you have one year remaining until you get a degree, which is probably the best chance if anyone ends up on the wait list.

I definitely understand this feeling. I've never been more than an hour from my parents, my friends, my pets and my horse. Moving away from all that is going to be a killer shock to the system. I just keep telling myself, "You WILL make new friends. You WILL be okay."

And yes, I get asked daily, "So, heard anything yet?" To which my standard reply is "June 15th." 😛

How long ago was that?
How many students per year apply from NSAC anyway? I'm betting it's way more than the 16 spots they have available and most probably wouldn't defer.

It would have been quite a while ago, in fairness. She'd probably been a vet for 10 years or so. I don't even know how many NS seats they had back then. So there's a good chance thins are quite a bit different now ...

I'm not sure how many apply from NSAC, but I emailed Jack MacDougall a while ago and he said about 50 apply from Nova Scotia each year.

And 32ish (half) get interviews? That's not too bad.
Anyone know offhand what the stats for PEI are 😛

I emailed Jack MacDougall a while ago asking for acceptance averages and such. He said PEI has 10 seats and they have 18-25 applicants. Newfoundland has 3 seats and they normally have 10-18 applicants, but apparently last year there were only 3 applicants(!). NB has 13 seats with 30-40 applicants.

You are applying this year, right scarcelyheard?? 😀

Yes I am! 🙂

I'm just worried that my grades aren't going to be good enough to land me an interview. I still have a lot that I have to do though... I have to write my GRE, take a couple upper level chemistry courses and take anatomy. If I do extremely well in those, I'm positive I'll have a shot.

I also have to start thinking about what I'm to do if I don't get accepted. I was thinking of going home and working for a year, maybe take some courses at the community college. I just realized that it's extremely difficult to get a job where my parents live, so I'm considering moving elsewhere to work and gain residency (either PEI or Toronto... at least I have a place to stay for cheap in Toronto)

I have a whole year to worry about these things though!

This deadline is making me antsy. I can't wait to find out which SDNers get in 🙂

I'm sure your grades will be good enough.🙂 If you're doubting yourself, just make sure you rock the GRE. I got an interview with a roughly 87.5% average, and a 1230 GRE.

GRE worth 5% so I think you should rely on your grades instead of GRE ... worst gre score gets 1 out of 5 and top ones 5 out of 5.

I haven't figured it out, but I have somewhere around an 79 now. Replacing two of my chem marks and an animal science next year is going to boost that significantly. I'm also planning on using my two electives to take another math (which will replace my 74 in my math elective) and maybe medical micro and maybe another sociology (to replace my 77). Most of my marks are in the mid 80s, but 60s in chem is killing my average!

I have a TON of extracurriculars (most aren't going to count if I have to apply a second time so hopefully I get in the first try) and my experience will be decent (2 shelters, 2 vet clinics, research and VIDA trip). I've also been working one or two jobs while going to school.

I think I'm going to quit my job at the end of the summer so I can devote more time to studies. My boyfriend is going away too, which will sadly free up some time.

Keeping my fingers crossed :xf:

I've got my fingers crossed for you guys too :xf:

I'd e-mail Jack MacDougall about the medical micro course. I think they only count science courses if they have a lab as well, and I know my medical micro (which was the most interesting class I've ever taken) course didn't have a lab.

Course, maybe they'll still count as an elective? 😕

I think ours has a lab. I'll know in a couple weeks when the schedule for next week is put up. Medical microbiology isn't classified as a biology at our school because it's not taught by a phD lol. If it fits in my schedule, I'll email him 🙂

If not, I can also replace a physics and an english 😛 I got lots of options!

I think you should e-mail Jack MacDougall to be sure the course you are taking will be considered they way you wish they are. I had to take two more course after I tought I was done with courses( after Jack's review). He is nice and helpful. Wish you the best luck increasing your average. If you really want it you will get it.

I'm guessing his email is on the website somewhere. I'll do that before registering for courses 🙂

Yes, definitely a good idea to ask Jack to review your plans. He is really open to helping. After I submitted my transcripts, he also contacted me in Dec to tell me I needed a composition course, which I was able to squeeze into my Jan semester (long distance from Athabasca U.).
He's jrmacdougall at upei.ca
He even called me in April to tell me that I shouldn't waste my money taking organic this summer because I really didn't need it! That was awesome news.

Agreed. Jack is SO helpful. I can't tell you how many e-mails I've sent him. He verified a bunch of my credits before I even applied (I did the Foundation Year Program at University of King's College, which counts as 12 credits, 3 in four different subjects). My last one to him was about my Winter 2010 transcripts to verify that they had arrived.

THE LETTERS ARE OUT!!! My friend who lives in PEI just got her rejection 🙁....so they should be on the way to us!! FINGERS CROSSED GUYS!!!! xoxoxoxox

😱 I am now sitting at work having a heart attack. I wasn't prepared to go into panic mode until Tuesday! (Sorry about your friend. I wonder how long it'll take for the mail to get to Nova Scotia. Why can't they do this the eco-friendly way and either call or e-mail?!)

No way! I wasn't expecting to hear before the weekend. I think I'm going to have an anxiety attack. Probably not a good trait for a vet to have! I have to drive to Moncton Sat, so maybe I'll skip over to the island to house hunt again!! Don't want to jinx myself though.

Eek, I got no mail today.

I hope we all get in! if not, I hope we all do next year!

This whole discussion is giving me heart palpitations... haha. I applied last year and recieved my letter on the exact day Jack told us, June 15th. Good luck everyone!!

Congrats guys!!!

I'm waitlisted.... did any get in and is planning to defer a year??

Cowhugger, I have some good news for you - I got in, but am planning to defer. I want to finish my Honours degree, mostly because I'd like to know if research is for me, but also because I love my project (researching nesting saw-whet owls, boreal owls and american kestrels in NS). I applied a year early - I wasn't expecting to get accepted on my first try!

Congrats Roughleggedhawk that's amazing, way to go!!!

That just made my day! Hopefully the waitlist isn't too long.. thanks for letting me know!! 🙂

Congrats to those who got in! :hardy:
roughleggedhawk, I'm doing my honours too! It looks like I'll be looking for trematode cercaria in snails... I'm doing a literature search on Monday so I guess I'll know for sure soon. Maybe I'll run into you at a conference sometime 😛

I just emailed Jack. Hopefully I didn't overwhelm him.

I have a quick question! Maybe you might be able to get back to me before he does!

I hate using this course as example 😛 The physics course I took was 6 credits. On my transcript, it says 71 for the first half and 68 as a final grade. Does AVC count the 71 or 68? (Bombed it because I got sick and something had to give in case any of you were wondering 😛)

Dumb chem and dumb physics 😛 Well, chem isn't going to kick my butt next year! I LOVED physics and wish I could retake it... but the only other physics course we have is the exact same course, only you need calculus to do the work 😡

mhlaur: how did you end up not needing organic?
Anthro/soc is the same thing... I was wondering if it counts as two courses or only one.

I already took it more than 6y ago. I wrote a short letter asking them to accept that grade, it was an A+ in the course and B in the lab portion (separate courses at SFU). I guess they accepted it since I re-took all 9 of the other science pre-reqs this past year and did very well in them.
