AZCOM Class of 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I enjoy a good boxing match! Although, I am not up to date as to the boxing world anymore, I really like a good fight!🙂 I really enjoy football, baseball, and golf. I can't wait to see some D'Backs games!!!
I'll be watching the game with peanuts and an anatomy book😀

funny you'd mention that-- my wife and i are looking into season tixs for the d-backs. They have a few different options-- full season (too many, too expensive), weekend only (not bad at all), or one game against each team (interesting). Who knows if it is going to happen. We could also hit some cardinals games- i can't imagine they'd be too much at all. 🙂 I also love v-ball and golf-- year-round sun is something i am totally excited about. I guess the saddest part is that most of the time i imagine i'll be indoors😀

That weekend only option for season tix souds pretty good, I'll have to look into that.

Man, for golf this place is heaven!!! I've found that there is nothin' like a good day at the links to ease the stress level.

There is no doubt that I will be hitting the Cards NFL action!! I am not really into the red birds myself, but they play some of my fav. teams.
You're right, we're likley to be library gnomes most of th time, but it will make the outings all the better!!😀

Hi everyone!

Since baseball seems to be the game of choice, there is another option in Phoenix. 5 minutes from AZCOM there is another venue for baseball. The Mariners do spring training at the Peoria Sports Complex located at Bell Rd and the 101. The games are a lot of fun and very inexpensive. And seating is great, too!

And golfing is fantastic, as well. Just two minutes north on 59th Ave sits the 500 club. And in the summer, you can get terrific rates on the world class courses in Scottsdale.

I know you all will thoroughly enjoy living in the Glendale/Phoenix area.

Cyndi

AZCOM has got to be the best med school in the nation for baseball fans. Spring training, then good old fashioned NL baseball as God and Nature Intended all summer and into the fall, and just when every other med-student baseball fan in the nation is weeping bitterly over the passing of the season, the *Arizona Fall League* comes along.

Nearly year-long baseball...almost worth the $30k a year for that alone, I'd say.

Amen to that. Golf is one of those old doctor steroetypes I want to live up to.

you're almost right, except that baseball heaven is in Atlanta. But, I am pretty sure that God never meant for the DH, it's a crime against nature. NL baseball rules!

Does anyone know if AZCOM has recreational sports teams?

Fred

I remember when I was there our Student Tour Guide told us they had a few intramurel teams. Football, and volleyball are the only ones I remember offhand.

Are there any mtn bikers, or hikers, in the group. Those mountians in the horizon looked like a weekend getaway for me anyday. The thought of kicking back with a few cold ones and watching some ball sounds pretty great too. As important as school will be I am glad that we have a class that wants to keep thier sanity in tact via some fun and games.

I'll study in the surrounding mountains if I have to. I too hope to be able to take weekend trips hiking, mtn. biking, and possibly even climbing--if routes are available. One big thing I loved about visiting AZCOM was the close proximity to so many recreational opportunities.
The evening after my interview, I drove for 20 minutes out to Lookout Mtn. (Greenway & 7th ave?) After a 15 minute hike, I was at the top and saw a spectacular view of the area. Here in Minnesota, there are plenty of lakes close by, but as far as mtn. biking or climbing go, you've got to drive for quite a while before you get to any decent areas. The fact that I can squeeze in a good relaxing hike without taking so much time out of my day is really appealing. As many of you talk about wanting to form intramural sports teams, I think more and more about getting groups of people into the surrounding countryside. How bout mandatory trips to Sedona after finals?

Another big opportunity I look forward to is being able to finally pursue an astronomy hobby. I've been waiting to be able to live somewhere where stargazing was at least possible, so I hope to squeeze in some telescope time while I'm in the area too. Maybe now I can finally justify buying that LX-90 I've been drooling over...

Sports I know of for sure: football, softball, volleyball.

Also, I don't know if they play basketball in intramurals, but a lot of students get together and play. Also, I don't know if they still do this, but students used to golf once a week together (I think it was on Fridays).

Not that we'll have a lot of time to do any of this stuff.

The cool thing is about that area is that you can golf into the night. I know that back home in Vegas there are some great lighted par-3 courses that are a lot of fun. I actually noticed in the interview, in the room we were all waiting in, a trophy board on the wall naming the winners of a MWU golf tourny. This really cool AZ guidebook/activity guide and there is just sooo much to do as for as nature-type thins are concerned.

Is anyone thinking of living on campus? If so, how did you rank the choices (1-14)? I cannot remember the apartments all that well, nor can I remember what the difference between the third floor vs. the other floors are. And what are the "other added amenities?"

Are all of you waiting until you get to AZ before you get your blood titers for your immunizations? I think we have a one month grace period to do it when we get there. I'm not sure if this is the best option or if it would be better to get them done here at home and have the results sent.

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Matt

Hey irish,

I'm pretty sure I'll be living on campus and I also don't remember which apartments were which. I know I liked the luxury one and two bedroom apartments and I don't know what the appeal would be for third floor apartments or for apartments in buildings G & H. Maybe they're newer. And other than the dishwasher I don't know what the other amenities are. Anyway, I'm planning to go out there with my parents during my sister's spring break so I can refresh my memory. I'm going to call Jose in the residential living office to see if he could tell me how fast the apartments fill up and to make sure that sprink break is not too late. Are you going to have a roommate? For me the luxury two bedroom is the best deal because the price is right and I think you get the most for your money as long as you don't mind living with someone. I don't really care which floor or building I get, but I would like a dishwasher.

As for the titers, I just happened to have a doctor's appointment this week and I asked him about the titers. He told me the hospital will do them for me and that he will look them over and fill out my form. And it only cost me $5 for a lab visit. So if you have the opportunity to get it done at home for a good price, then I'd say do it. I know AZCOM says they have a deal worked out with Sonora Labs, but who knows how good that deal is? Hope this helped.

-Matt (great name, huh?)

Irish,

I'll be living on campus also. I also put in for the luxury two-bedroom...enormous apartments, and when you split one two ways it's cheaper than the studios or one bedrooms. Jose mentioned that the apartments in G and H were much nicer; they built those buildings after feedback from the students about the first set of apartments.

I'm interested to see how the roommate thing works. Luck-of-the-draw pairings are always so dramatic. I'm calming myself with soothing thoughts of trips to Glendale's world-famous bead museum.

-Luke

"This museum serves the community through programs designed to heighten awareness of peoples' ideas about themselves and their world through the study of BEADS."

Speaking of roommates, on the housing application where it has a blank for roommate, are they asking for a specific name of a person (if you happen to know someone who's also going there) or do they want male or female? Also, has anyone considered renting a standard two bedroom by themselves? It's only a little more than a one bedroom and you get a whole extra room of living space. Maybe they require you to have a roommate if you'll be living in a two bedroom or at least to have a family. Anyone know?

i'll likely be doing a studio or normal 1bdrm until December when my fiance finishes nursing school and joins me.🙁 But during that time I will be scouting really hard for houses🙂

I just realized that the way my last post looks it looks like I would be sad when my fiance joins me....OOPS The little🙁 was for the possibility of getting a studio.

I would like to congratulate and welcome all those who have been recently accepted to AZCOM. I am a MS-1 and have found this to be an incredible institution, from it's faculty to the carriculum to the students. There are always improvements that can be made and the great thing here is that the administration is always willing to listen to suggestions by the students about how things can be improved. I am not a huge fan of Glendale, (aesthetically speaking) but than again I would be too busy to enjoy it even if I thought it was eden. The weather is fantastic most of the time and when I do want to get away from school, there are some great outdoor excursions within a few hours drive. I do have to say that you can find everything you want here, you may have to drive a bit to get it, but the pheonix area has it all.

Again welcome to everyone. If you have any question just let me know and I will try and answer them as best I can and in a timely manner. Happy Holidays.

How far away is Glendale from downtown Phoenix?

Fred

Hey biofreak,

I think the roommate blank is if you have someone in mind that you want to share with--then you can put their name in the blank. Otherwise, I believe it is just luck of the draw--making sure to consider the personality traits you list at the bottom of the form, of course 😳).

I'm just not sure whether I want to do the roommate thing the first year or not. It seems like a better deal (i.e. to get a two bedroom) but I don't know if I want to take the chance of being paired with someone that I might not "click" with (though I'm sure everyone would make just fine roommates).

Maybe the MS1 (sport) could give us his opinion on the matter.

Happy Holidays!

Matt

One more thing:

The AZCOM website says that Glendale is just a 15-minute drive from downtown Phoenix--so not too far.

about the roomie thing-- i'm pretty sure they set you up with someone in a different program (pharm & do for example) that way you are not totally sick of each other after the first month of class.

i just thought i'd wish all of you a very merry christmas and i hope we all can enjoy this free time-- it will soon come to an end😱

That makes sense. I kind of like that idea--maybe I will put down that I want a roommie then. 🙂 Thanks for the info jhug.

I posted this earlier in pre-osteo but this area probably makes more sense...
where do azcom students rotate on clinicals? there is no list on the website. I am mostly interested in EM or rural FP. thanks

emed-

I'm sure others can give a more specific reply to this, but I think that a certain portion of years three and four are required to be in Arizona, and everything else is pretty much wherever you want it to be.

There are no specific hospitals per se since AZCOM does the preceptor thing...you follow individual doctors around for most of your rotations, which gives you a longitudinal patient experience...you follow their progress wherever the doctor does. This way you're not restricted to an exclusively hospital-ish environment as often happens in traditional clinicals.

Along the lines of family practice and emergency medicine: I'm hoping to do the same myself. Osteopathy is great because there are still osteopathic FP/EM joint residencies, which you can only get into with a DO. The residencies are four years long (as opposed to the six or seven you'd need to take for each individually). They're located in Pontiac, Michigan, St Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, and one other place that I forget (check it out on scutwork.) Like all residencies, if you end up deciding you want to get into one of these it's best to reserve some of your clinical rotation time for these places.

I just exchanged a few emails with the administrator of the program in the Bronx, and he had some useful information. If this is the sort of thing you're interested in, let me know and I'd be glad to hook you up.

does anyone have a good resource for homes for sale in the scottsdale area-- actually anywhere inbetween mwu and mayo? My dad may end up working there and we are looking into paying off a house together in place of rent.

Let me begin by saying congrats to you all. I am so excited to be attending medical school but anxious to get started though. I saw a few of you are looking a buying a house. I have been looking extensively have decided to have a house built for the about the same price as buying an existing one. I am having a house built in a town called Litchfield Park. If anyone want more info email me at the link below. I am looking forward to meeting all of my classmates and working together to make our medical education the best it can be.

Does anyone have any idea about how much of our class is filled? When does AZCOM typically stop interviewing? Some of my friends are hoping to interview there when the admissions committee starts again in March(?).

Fred

i imagine it is full ...but they usually accept about 2x the amount that enroll so there is still hope for those that are interviewing now. I have no idea for sure though. i know a few that enrolled after interviewing late (march) last year.

Is there anyone who enjoys flying radio rontrol airplanes and helicopter?

Hi everyone! Hope everyone had a fantastic holiday!🙂

jhug- try searching homes in Moon Valley, Paradise Valley or even in North Phoenix (around Pinnacle Peak or Happy Valley). These areas are all really nice and much less expensive than purchasing a home in Scottsdale proper. With the 101, the commute to Mayo from any of these areas is approx 20 minutes... well, depending on which branch of Mayo you're interested in.

kothkg- the homes in Litchfield Park are nice, but the noise from the Luke Air Force Base can sometimes be annoying.

I was just home in Phoenix for the Christmas, and I cannot wait to return for the beginning of classes.

While you are waiting for your first year to start, here are a couple of good reads for you about the experience of the gross anatomy lab:

First Cut: A Season in the Human Anatomy Lab by Albert Howard Carter, III (a professor of comparative lit on sabbatical wrote of his experience as an observer at Emory med school's lab)
ISBN # 0-312-19546-X

Body of Knowledge: One Semester of Gross Anatomy, the Gateway to Becoming a Doctor by Steve Giegerich (journalist and faculty member at Columbia and Pulitzer Prize finalist)
ISBN # 0-684-86208-5

Both are inexpensive paperbacks and worth the read. With the above ISBN numbers you should be able to get them through Amazon or practically any other bookstore. Enjoy and get ready!

A random question....does anyone know if AZCOM records/archives lectures? What fun to climb Camelback Mountain with a physiology lesson tucked in the mp3 player.

Thanks in advance to the class of 2005! The online test and quiz archive looks like it will be a lifesaver.

L.A.W.-- where did you find the online quiz and test archive??
I remember learning during my interview about a student note-taking service. A group of people record/video tape the lecture and then transcribe it for all the students that sign up for the service. I agree that it would be super helpful to take a lecture with you on little excursions.

But it would be VERY cool if they have that for us.

If there's a lecture-recording service, hopefully we could do the mp3 thing even if it's not currently in place. Kirksville has a great little system that has all the lectures on their intranet the same day...I imagine an online mp3 and video archive would be pretty easy to set up. Considering that all the on-campus housing has T1 access, it could definitely add a lot of flexibility to those long weekdays.

Sounds like it'll soon be time for a Class of 2007 website!

L.A.W.-- i can already tell i like how you think!!🙂
Thanks for that link to the class of 2005 link too, that's good stuff.

Has anyone read the books that muonwiz suggested? Barnes&Noble didn't have first cut but i'm really enjoying the body of knowledge. I love how the writer really gives a respect/reverence for the body donated to learing-- thanks for the suggestion!

I agree that we have to start a class of 2007 website. Is anyone any good at that kind of stuff? I'd be happy to do what I can but admit it is not my forte. I am sure I can get our web designer where I work to help out as well. I think if we just build from an existing website i.e. class of 2005 it should be pretty easy.

Since we are allready talking about the changes we would like made as a class I have another suggestion also coming from Kirksville. They have a transcript system that also keeps track of their E.C. activities and fellowships ect. to show that they had interest in fields early on or that they have pursued contact with that field on thier own. It also seems more official when applying for Residency if it is coming from the registrar. It might be nice to have at AZCOM. How do you think we get these ideas put into place?

About a 2007 website... I've always thought a Rotations/Residencies Review thing would be great. Kind of like InterviewFeedback, but for AZCOM students. Will definately need to get help from the other classes to make it happen though.

I certainly have a lot of questions about rotations, residency and fellowships. It would be nice to be as informed as possible. I am a current student at azcom in the masters program and I have been accepted in the class of 2007. 😕

I second that. A review of rotation + residencies would be golden!! It would be cool too to have a forum (much like this) our own server...not a necessity but cool.

I would love to help with a future c/o 2007 website. Although I know little-nothing now, I am taking a web design class this spring so maybe...maybe I could give my $0.02 every now and again🙂

I have some spare space on my domain which I could probably set up for a preliminary website. I don't know what sort of official sites classes have, but it seems like it's pretty open. In addition to the 2005 website, there's azcomstudents.org , which seems very nicely done, if a little light on the updates.

I can play with a few templates and try to get stuff set up. I imagine it will need to be moved to school servers or merged with whatever official site turns up in fall since taped lectures would take up lots of space. AZCOM has a lovely intranet from what I hear, though.

Once I get something basic set-up, I'll notify anyone interested who wants to work on it. I imagine a lot of it will just be skeleton since we don't have much information, but if anyone has any suggestions for more things to add, I'll start trying to figure out how to incorporate them.

Ideas so far:

-Rotation/Residency Review (perhaps we could tie this in somehow with scutwork.com
-Discussion forum
-Lecture/Note/Test Archive (maybe we can beg 2005's files off of them for a nice start.)

I imagine lots of people going off-campus will be needing roommates also. Does AZCOM have any sort of mechanism for this or are people on their own? If the latter, we could maybe set up something for that too.

who is in charge of azcomstudents.org?? these ideas sound like they'd go great & be a helpful addition to that site! let's keep the ideas rolling🙂

I think us students are responsible for the web site, i seem to remember them asking in the beginning of the fall if anyone would be willing to take over the site and as is obvious we don't have much time to keep it updated...

Hi.

I am attending UCSD at the moment and I am hoping to come visit AZCOM with ~10 other students on January 18th. The problem is that no one at recruitment over there responds back!! Is there anyone willing to give us a tour and feedback of the school or perhaps able to get someone in administration to help us make this happen. We need a letter faxed to UCSD stating that there will be someone there to give us a tour so that we can get funded by the school. Short notice I know, but nobody responded back to us...are u guys still on vacation?!

thanx
Ata

aallaei- most of the posters on this thread aren't at AZCOM yet... not until this coming Aug. Perhaps you should post this on the class of 2006 thread or try to reach the admissions office again. IMO, the campus is small but beautiful. The surrounding desert is breathtaking, and the facilities are quite modern.

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

Try calling Student Services (623) 572-3210
and explain your situation to them Dr. Ross the Dean of student services is really good about stuff like this.
