Starting academic general surgery is usually between 150K and 175K. The AAMC produces a book of average salaries by specialty and geographic region. It costs $175 to purchase, so try and find it for the borrowing. As I recall, when my fellowship director and I looked at NE salaries they were in the above range...YMMV.
General Surgery in PP can obviously make more, and often do once outside of their income guarantee. The problem with all such surveys is that they are biased toward practices with EMRs, and organized staff. I'm at the ACS Coding Course currently, and the room is full of surgeons and coders. And many, even the lecturer, admitted that when the MGMA surveys come in, they just toss them out because they are pages and pages long and without an EMR and staff to fill them out, they are too much work. Therefore, these type of surveys often end up skewed to the right.
