lol and the conservatives voted for him for his “policies”.

Taxing vices is something I can get behind…cigarettes, alcohol, sugar, gambling, etc. Bloomberg caused a stir when he tried to tax Big Gulps. Obviously, that is not what is happening here, but a vice tax makes sense to me.

My exact reaction and I drink French wines.

This and potentially getting rid of the penny are probably the two best things of Trump's first month.

OK, a vice tax for the purpose of generating revenue to pay for the consequences of that vice is one thing, but some stupid bull**** tariff on my Bordeaux because he doesn’t have any real ideas for improving our nations economic productivity is an entirely different matter.

A federal judge has ordered half a dozen federal agencies to “immediately” reinstate probationary employees fired last month as part of the Trump administration’s effort to rapidly shrink the federal workforce, calling the effort a “sham.”

The preliminary injunction issued from the bench Thursday by US District Judge William Alsup requires the departments of Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Defense, Energy, Interior and Treasury to rehire the employees. The judge said that he might extend the order to cover other federal agencies at a later time.

Alsup, an appointee of former President Bill Clinton, said he was making the ruling because he believes the Office of Personnel Management unlawfully directed the agencies earlier this year to lay off the probationary employees, who generally have been on the job for less than a year.

“The court finds that Office of Personnel Management did direct all agencies to terminate probationary employees with the exception of mission critical employees,” he said, rejecting arguments from the Justice Department that OPM merely issued “guidance” to the agencies that then led to the firings.

The judge said the order is effective immediately: “This is the order and it counts.”

The Justice Department indicated Thursday that it will appeal the ruling to the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

Assuming this stands and isn't reversed on appeal, I wonder what percentage of employees they let go will even be willing/able to come back?

Double the cost of Hennessy?! Just lost the entire black vote.
(That’s a joke folks)
lol. Wait, am I allowed to laugh at this?

The people here, except for a few posters, don't want to voice their true feelings because they don't want to be labeled as racist.

Just a coincidence I’m sure.

No one is stupid enough not to understand that most people who voted for Trump care a lot more about cultural issues than economics.
That's likely true, but at least on this forum, the Trump voters have been wailing away on the "policy" angle like Animal the Muppet got a new drum set.

House Republican leaders on Tuesday quietly moved to shield their members from having to vote on whether to end President Trump’s tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, tucking language into a procedural measure that effectively removed their chamber’s ability to undo the levies.

The maneuver was a tacit acknowledgment of how politically toxic the issue had become for their party, and another example of how the all-Republican Congress is ceding its power to the executive branch.

In this case, Republican leaders did so using a particularly unusual contortion: They essentially declared the rest of the year one long day, nullifying a law that allows the House and Senate to jointly put an end to a disaster declared by the president.

House Democrats had planned to force a vote on resolutions to end the tariffs on Mexico and Canada, a move allowed under the National Emergencies Act, which provides a mechanism for Congress to terminate an emergency like the one Mr. Trump declared when he imposed the tariffs on Feb. 1.

Coldly calculating political maneuvering or craven abdication of power and duty? Why not both?

I am a republican and I am surrounded by republicans (family, friends etc...)

It's all about race relation no matter how much republicans want to dress it up. I gotta give it to Trump. He is smart to understand that.

I don’t know what proportion of Trump voters believe this. For sure his top advisor Stephen Miller does. Jared Taylor says the quiet part out loud.

I lived in a couple Spanish countries for a total of 6 yrs. I speak Spanish really well. Racism is A LOT more prevalent in Latin America than it is in the US.

When these Hispanics move to the US (especially the one from upper middle class in their homeland), they want/try to "fit in", meaning they want to be "grouped" with Caucasians instead of other minorities (especially AA).

When I moved back to the US (Miami suburbs), I quickly realized there was a big percentage of African Americans as well that felt like Hispanic immigrants are given preferential treatment over them. I remember vividly an AA colleague that I worked with in college as math tutors said that.

Trump seems to understand how to dice and slice these dynamics. That is the reason he did better than most republicans with minorities.

It's a lot more than you probably think. I am saying this as a republican.

Taylor. A white nationalist married to a Jewish woman. Richard Spencer. A white nationalist who dates Asian women. These are not bright people.

You voted for a racist chaotic train wreck of an administration.
It sounded like Brown messed up her visa, which is something that happens frequently leading to immigration problems for J1 holders. Where does the racism part come in? I have Canadian friends dealing with similar issues

She isn’t a J1 holder, she is here on an H1b.

Transplant Doctor with Legal visa and court order to not deport. Muslim. Deported.

But no, sure it was probably Browns fault. Always another reason.

I’m curious what you think happened here exactly? Do you feel she was targeted for deportation specifically because of her religion and nationality, or is there any possibility that the paperwork was incorrectly done?

If you think it’s the former, is it just a coincidence that this woman is a physician and she’s the only news story we’ve heard of this nature? Feels like there’s 1000s of other people who would have this issue if it’s a targeted measure

I have questions and suspicions. This one smells bad. Not so much on the guy from Columbia.

My honest feeling. A little bit of both.

I’m just watching the morning news and the companies around here with workers on H1B visas are basically telling them not to leave the country.

It would be naive to not consider that the immigration crackdown isn’t slightly targeted

I think we’re seeing an enforcement of existing procedures. Look at the drop in border incidents for example. The laws are on the books, our immigration system is too overwhelmed and complex to adequately enforce them though.

I’ve had half a dozen friends have huge immigration issues under every administration. They’re always looking over their shoulders about it even in the bluest of states and admins

We won’t get the details but what it’s clear as that we have an administration of cruelty and chaos which has been blindly firing good employees who we want to be doing their jobs

The risk of actual violence from these callous decisions is off the charts. Firing former veterans. How many are gun owners? How many people with PTSD? How many people with nothing to lose?

Even if the paperwork was incorrectly done, she should not have been deported without a hearing.

I believe they deported her, ignoring the judge, because she was from a “Muslim” country.

agree

we have to remember all this immigration is being led by Stephen Miller, a known xenophobe and a white supremist

Taylor has reportedly had run ins with other white nationalists like Richard Spencer and David Duke because he is not antisemitic. Stephen Miller on the other hand is a Jewish white nationalist. Marrying or dating women from an oppressed group doesn’t mean you’re not a racist. Plenty of slave owners had children with their slaves.

We’re inviting white South African farmers to immigrate while at the same time deporting brown transplant nephrologists.
