I saw other threads about applications etc. at WSU, but thought I'd start a new one for those of us who have decided to accept an offer and join the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2016! I just called Barbara and accepted my offer today! I am hoping to head to Pullman this summer to get established, and to find a place to live while the options are better than right before fall semester. I was hoping to discuss possible housing/room mate options, Pullman life, WSU in general, and anything else related to starting 1st year this fall in Washington!

I just talked to Barbara today too! Where are you moving from? I'm open to discuss housing situations as well 🙂

I got into Utah/Washington, so I'm just gunna add myself to this thread! 🙂 thought it would be cool to get to know some of the wsu first years because it sounds like we will be doing some distance education together and we are supposed to be a part of COLE too!

Hi all,

4th year here 🙂 Feel free to ask me anything. 50 days until graduation, yeah!

I'm also selling my home. You can find the ad here http://pullman.craigslist.org/reo/2904380068.html Special deal for any vet student that buys it - I'll throw in any of my books you want and give you a complete tour of school and town - plus I'll cook you dinner and you can pick my brain about the program 🙂

It's a 2008 2 bed 2 bath mobile home 15 minutes away from school (that means butt in car to butt in class, I have it timed perfectly). I've loved living here.

I do advise that you find housing sooner rather than later - especially if you will be renting. Pullman/Moscow are college towns and it's pretty common for things to be booked up in May even though school won't start until later that summer.

It's common to live in Pullman, but many people also live in Moscow, Colfax or Albion.

When you're putting together a budget, keep in mind you might want some snow tires if you don't already have them. They're not absolutely necessary but they make life easier. Moscow is relatively flat, but Pullman has a bunch of hills. In 4th year there are also many times you'll be going to/from school at midnight; they don't really plow well here so it can be a little ugly.

EDIT: I just made a website for the trailer 🙂 http://www.605mobilehome.com/

Update: I just sold my home - it was on the market for less than a week 🙂 I'm not joking when I say things move fast this time of year!

If anyone has questions about housing in the area just let me know. I'm more familiar with Moscow than Pullman, but I can help point you to any resources you might need.

I ADORED Washington's campus when I visited. THE warmest and friendliest people I have ever met. If I can't get into my In-State, I desperately want to go to Washington 🙁

Bumping this thread because I'd like to hear more about successful WSU applicants!

Congratulations! I look forward to meeting you and starting the program together. I sent you a private message with a link to my "housing wanted" ad on Craigslist so you can read more about me and see if you might be interested in joining my housing search in Pullman.

I'll be traveling to Pullman sometime in the next couple of weeks to meet with a faculty member about a potential job for this summer, and hopefully I'll get to check out a couple of houses while I'm there. I take lailanni's advice to heart, and hope to find something soon!

Congrats! I look forward to sharing class with you in a couple of years!

My best friend just sold her trailer. It was on the market for 0 days. (The agent instantly had a buyer).

I'd guess that finding a "real" house is a more flexible timeline. The trailers, very popular with vet students, go relatively fast.

As fate would have it, both my friend and I have sold our trailers to incoming veterinary students  we're hoping they'll be best of friends too.

Just accepted my offer from the IS waitlist. I am looking for a place to live, possibly with roomies, PM me if you might want to share a place. I am drama free and I cook good food! I will also have an adorable pup with me. Barbara just emailed me a list of dog friendly housing for rent so I am starting my search from there.

I'm starting the program as a WA resident, but thinking about buying a home in Moscow. Do they check residency on an annual basis? Would I be at risk of loosing IS tuition? What do vet student think about the commute to and from Moscow? Thanks!

As long as you have a permanent address in Washington (a relative or parent) then you'd be fine.

My Mom lives in Washington, I have my license and voter's registration there. I've been living in Moscow during school. No problems.

Honestly, after the first year I don't think they bother to check. If you're accepted as an IS student and you register with your permanent address IS they couldn't care less where you spend your time. If you want to be cautious you can call and ask. When I asked 4 years ago they didn't seem to care where I lived for vet school as long as I had some address in Washington state.

The commute to and from Moscow is easy. It takes 15 where I live in town. That's butt in car to butt in class. There is never traffic. I eat breakfast on the easy drive in. Snow isn't an issue. Sometimes you'll have to take it slow, but I've had to drive back in forth at midnight in a snowstorm and it wasn't a big deal. The road is flat and there's really only one mild curve. Get some snow tires and you have nothing to worry about.

Personally, I've loved living in Moscow. There has never been a day where I wished I lived in Pullman.

I'll be in the Utah/Washington program too! So excited!!!!

I got into the Utah-WSU program as well off the wait-list 🙂

do you have any idea when we start COLE/classes?

COLE is August 13th-18th, and classes start August 20th.
Btw, I was an alternate as well 🙂

Thank you so much gorilla girl!

and yayy, that's really encouraging. I thought I would be the only one from the alternate list and be the oddball out or something looking like the inexperienced person. (this is the result of stress)

Sometimes I think the same way...that I'm not as "good" as those that weren't alternates and got in as 1st Tier. But seriously, once we get as far as the interview and alternate status, there is not much difference between students. This is what Dr. Talcott told me during my application review.
It's sooo hard not to stress about not being prepared though...vet school is going to be tough, and no matter what I do, I'm not going to be completely comfortable with that. I just know that I'm ready to dedicate myself to it, and all we can do is our best! Be happy, we're in! Such a hurdle in itself.

when's the freaking packet coming in?!?
It seriously felt like it took FOREVER to receive our packets last summer! But don't worry, they'll come and you'll start filling out papers and sending in checks... 🙂
COLE will be here before you know it!! Oh, and don't worry about not having the same experience as your classmates, you got in for a reason!! Everyone has different experiences, learn from each other 😀

Howdy classmates!! Not sure how many of you guys check the forum regularly but I thought I might as well update the forum just in case.

FYI: the Facebook group for our class is now up (actually it was created in April? I missed it). Those of us in town are getting together for drinks this Friday. Check the FB page for details.

Starting the year off right 🙂
