Utah State University c/o 2029 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I finished my application March 31st and submitted my Kira Talent on April 6th.

I actually didn't apply anywhere this cycle and was planning on taking a gap year, so this is my first application! I plan to accept if I get in-state tuition through Nevada.
Congratulations!

Do we know if there's been any OOS seats (as in not contracted, will need to pay OOS tuition) that have been offered yet? It sounds like right now there have been IS offers and contracted seats OOS offers (NV residents).

NV residents do not have contract seats we are with the OOS pool. I asked about it bc I’m NV

I should've clarified. I just wanted to ask if there have been any OOS seats offered to anyone else asides from those living in NV. I only mention that because based on one of the previous news articles released about USU, it sounds like USU has at least some number of seats set aside for those from NV since they are offering IS tuition to select areas in NV. I just want know if IS and NV residents are the only offers they have been making so far or if there has been an OOS offer made to anyone from another state.

There aren’t seats put aside for NV residents or in state tuition. There is a stipend that can be applied to and for each year that you receive the stipend you have to agree to practice a year in Nevada. It’s called to Nevada WICHE Veterinary School Stipend. I called at the beginning and asked if there would be any contract seats for any states because I’m in Idaho and they said it was a definite no for the year minimum due to the amount of students this year they are accepting.

I've been wondering the same thing. I was disappointed to hear that the majority of their OOS seats are going to people from NV.

I think they meant that more NV residents will probably be applying over other schools, so that’ll skew the pool. We aren’t apart of WICHE so it’s our only IS option

Idaho is considering adding spots to Utah, but it would likely be in place of the spots at WSU.

I have discussed this with several state Veterinarians in Idaho, and we do not want to give up seats at WSU. We want seats at both colleges because we do not have enough as it is.

It would be ideal for sure to have seats at both, one can only hope!!!

Ok I see what you mean. That makes a lot more sense

I would recommend joining and attending the IVMA meetings. That is where this is being discussed. I think it is ultimately dependent on what funding the state can provide. It will be difficult to convince them to provide funding for additional in-state seats.

I would love any resources! I thought only Vet Students can join the IVMA? I do know that Idaho has been paying the difference in tuition to WSU for all 4 years of out of state tuition for Idaho Residents. Because we can establish residency, the veterinarians I have talked with have said that they should only provide the difference for the first year and that Idaho (Moscow students) should move to Pullman to get in state tuition so the state doesn't have to cover the whole 4 year difference.

That would definitely be an option worth exploring. I went to a meeting that was attached to a CE, but one of the people on the board is not a veterinarian or licensed vet tech and just has a history of work experience in the vet field, so that implies that non-vets can be members. I'm sure if you reached out, they would be able to give you more information on how you can participate.

Ok, thank you for clarifying!

Do we think more decisions are going to roll out today? I know they have a lot of applications to go through, just anxious to know, like everyone else.

I hope so! Also I feel like if you turned your app in very early your more likely to hear back sooner since it’s rolling

I have heard of more offers today. All I have heard are in state though.
We are all really excited for you that you got in, but please have the self and social awareness to know how what you post affects the hundreds of people still waiting to hear about their futures. Your comment last week that “they should have made most of their acceptance calls this afternoon” put everyone into a frenzy and caused the admissions office to be bombarded. Please be very specific and positive of the information you are posting on public pages followed by people anxiously waiting for information on their dreams as well.

So do we think there were calls/acceptances that went out this week? I tried to search the FB APVMA group and nothing has shown up on there either except for that first small set of calls.

This was posted yesterday but doesn’t look like anyone confirmed acceptances

Anyone else wondering why we still haven’t heard from Utah yet? I thought rolling admissions meant that if you submitted your application early you would get an answer sooner

Rolling just means they review applications as they come in. Does not guarantee an earlier decision unfortunately. Same situation with LMU that is rolling- people submitted in July but still didn’t hear until like January

Ah okay. Thanks for clarifying

It’s so frustrating tho waiting to hear back I totally get it! I think USU also received a lot more applicants than they were anticipating which is making everything take longer

I agree. I think they got sooo much more than they thought they were going to get

Has anyone heard if there is a cutoff date by which they will have released all of their decisions?

This is posted on the USU CVM website. It makes it sound like the latest they will send out the decisions is May 23rd. I may be misinterpreting it.

They said via email may 23rd is the last day they are accepting new applications not sending out acceptances!
Well at least they have a cutoff for that. I know the news article that is floating around said they hoped to have the spots filled by June 1, but that was published right after they opened the application, so I wasn't sure if anyone had heard and update or a set cutoff date for decisions. I just want to be able to plan my life and to know if I need to move lol

When you get an email from them reminding you that your professor hasn't sent in her rec letter and that they can't review the application until that's done 🥲

(I emailed a different professor instead of going the cookie route because I thought it would be faster but I was apparently wrong)

Anyone want to take one for the team and see what info they can get from admissions? 😅
I would. But kinda don’t want to be pushy. Guess it depends on how the email is phrased. Maybe say something like hi I was wondering when the next batch of decisions will come out? Idk

I left a voicemail for Ryan asking if there was a set deadline for OOS applicants to hear by. As far as we know, it’s only the one person who has been admitted OOS, right?

I believe that's correct, I haven't seen anything else on here or the FB APVMA page (even searched "utah" and "USU" multiple times, lol). Of course, there's the possibility that someone not on these two websites could've received an offer though! But if I had to guess, a majority of the apps are probably IS and they might just be trying to get a good look at the whole OOS pool.

I talked to Ryan two weeks ago after posts were made that “most” people should have been contacted. He assured me that most spots were still available (for IS and OOS is my guess), and that more acceptances would be rolling out over the next few weeks. Still really vague on when we would hear anything, but there should still be a decent amount of spots for IS and OOS (hopefully).

For those of you emailing for updates how did you format the email? I want to send one but I don’t want to be pushy

I think acknowledging it’s a long process that is new is good before voicing your questions or frustrations. Please keep us posted!

When they finally make offers, what schools will be most impacted by those accepting Utah. I know a few have mentioned Midwestern...any other schools like WSU, Oregon, CSU, LMU that may be impacted?
