c/o 2018 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Finals didn't go as well as I'd hoped. This isn't going to be my best semester, but not my worst either. Applications to WCVM and UCVM have been submitted, now to chase down my transcripts and references.... I hope everyone else's exams are going better than mine did, and that you're all staying warm!

Sorry to hear you had a rough semester 🙁 I had one pretty bad final (...my A in the class turned into a B+), but the other three went better than I thought they would. Hopefully things are going well for everyone!

Hi all! Does anyone know/could anyone direct me to a thread specifically for Auburn CVM c/o 2018 applicants or UGA CVM c/o 2018 applicants? I only use the SDN app on my phone and am having trouble navigating... Thanks for any help, and good luck to everyone as the dreaded interview process is quickly approaching 🙂

Soooooo anxious waiting to hear back from schools! I already got into one school, so I feel like I should be relaxing a bit.. but I feel just as much anxiety waiting to hear from the others. I haven't heard from my number one school yet, so that's the issue.. but still.. I wish I could just relax.

Take heart! You're definitely going to be a DVM!!! Congratulations 😀

Two interviews this weekend and I have a crap load of stuff to do (for school and around the house) before I go... but the motivation is seriously lacking.

I just wanted to bump to say hi to my fellow c/o '18 hopefuls 🙂

We're rooting for you!

This is going to sound kind of silly, but I've been experiencing a little anxiety this term because I opted to not take a full course load (and just take a few classes) this term to deal with flying out for interviews. On our school's quarter system it can get extremely difficult to recover from missing even 3 or 4 classes, and I'm taking a prereq as one of them and don't want my grade to suffer.

Anyway, as a workaholic overachiever like many of us, I'm experiencing guilt for doing this, especially on days where my friends go to more class than I do. Obviously I have a more manageable workload outside of class hours, and I also have more time to do things I haven't done on campus - I'm working in a lab this term and getting really involved in the arts - but I feel like it's all a cop-out and I'm going to get this bad karma because I don't deserve to get into vet school for taking a break like this, and then I won't get into vet school.

I TOLD YOU it was going to be silly... just my thoughts here. Any advice?

Lol, well you are being silly. Everyone needs a break sometimes. I graduated from undergrad in 3 years and gave up all of my free time for school. Because of this, I purposely made my last semester much lighter to give myself a break. Enjoy your free time while it lasts because once in vet school you'll lose most of it again due to workload.

Haha. I'm sure you'll be totally fine. You get bad karma pretty much from doing bad deeds with ill intents... And taking fewer courses isn't hurting anyone else or yourself for that matter. If anything... taking fewer courses just means you know your limits and your trying your best to get into vet school. If anything, I think this would be better for you... Plus you're doing more activities. 🙂

I'm also not taking any classes right now, not working, and not volunteering (not until mid-Feb anyways). So I'm worse off than you. :hungry:

It's better to take a lighter load than have your courses suffer! I just graduated a semester early, and I know that I am already feeling bad for not having anything to really do while everyone else suffers through their last semester 🙂

Thanks for well wishes 🙂

I was talking to my professor today because he went to Purdue for is PhD, but he said he never went back after he graduated. Then he felt the need to throw in the whole "Well, Vet School is hard to get into, especially as an out-of-state student. But you got an interview, so that is something." Then it got awkward... 😛

On a different note, has anyone sent their Fall transcripts to VMCAS? If so, did they send you a notification that they received it? I sent mine out 2 weeks ago and I have not heard anything. I just wanted to see before I start bothering them!

They didn't send me a notification, but I can see that they received my transcript in the "transcripts" section on my VMCAS application. I sent it a couple weeks ago, and just today it showed up under "transcripts" as received on the Jan 15th. So, I guess it takes them a while to post it to your app even after they receive it.

I'm in the same boat. I sent mine like 2 weeks ago, but the status on VMCAS hasn't been updated yet. I'll give it a few more days and call them later in the week if it's not updated. On a different note, I just filed my taxes and submitted my FAFSA... once again. Let the debt begin! :soexcited:

I am waiting on my last W2 so that I can finish my taxes and do my FASFA.

Im waiting too! Called VMCAS and they said that if it wasn't posted by Friday afternoon, that I should call and check on them. They were super nice and helpful!! I sent my request to the school about 2 weeks ago, so hoping they get there soon! 👍

I sent mine 2 weeks ago as well and it just updated today! Yours will probably show up soon!

I'm having a hard time staying positive about this cycle, especially with being at the vet school everyday and taking vet-relevant courses...Like everyone else, I want this so bad and I'm so afraid that I won't be able to handle a rejection...which is more likely than not, if I'm honest with myself.

Ugh. Sorry for being a Debbie Downer. I should be thankful for having even gotten this far in the process. Hurry up, February!

It's a tough process, you're allowed to feel bummed. Hang in there 🙂

How many other schools are you waiting to hear back from? I feel like I should remember this, but is this your first cycle? Hang in there, Epi!

You've already interviewed at Texas and it's your IS, so your chances are better than many others already. Don't be so hard on yourself. You still have a month or so before you hear back. I think you'll be fine. Just concentrate on your courses and extracurriculars. Exercise, do yoga, meditate, draw, hike, hang out with friends, etc. Distract yourself. You'll find out when you find out so don't worry too much about it right now. 🙂

Thanks! I think the weather and being sick has gotten me down recently.

I only applied to my IS. And yes, it's my first cycle. I never expected to get an interview the first time around, so I think it's thrown me off.

This is true...I might be more confident if I didn't know how grade-based they are, which is my biggest weakness. Also, I keep thinking about how the bottom 20% of interviewees are dropped based on the interview score. Blegh! I need to get out of my head. Coursework will start picking up soon, as will my reseach, so hopefully I'll be more distracted soon enough.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

Don't know where to put this question.. but can anyone provide insight into the FAFSA/tax return situation? I'm recently married and wondering if there a preference in filing taxes separately or jointly.. or if it makes any difference at all for the FAFSA? I am really clueless when it comes to this stuff.. and just don't want to make any crazy mistakes when filing my taxes that results in not getting any federal aid..

Anyone else completely excited about starting vet school in the fall, but at the same time, utterly terrified? 😱 How am I going to stuff all that info into my head?

This is exactly how I'm feeling. Excited but nervous as hell. Gonna enjoy the free time I have now before 4 years of hell begins!

I'm enjoying vet school much more than I thought I would be. So, there's that 🙂 But definitely enjoy your time off!!

Still trying to figure out how I'm supposed to stuff everything into my head...it's hell at times but I don't hate it.

Easy...

You don't.

vet school has taught me where to go look things up, so I don't have to remember everything.

One of my favorite professors is giving us open book exams (for an elective). She said, "the exams are open book, just like real life." <3

Curious about how 2018 waitlist people are doing out there?
I'm on two lists. I'm trying to stay motivated, volunteer my fanny off & study a lot to retake the GRE.
I am not taking classes for the first time in a long time, working only 2-3 days a week to give me lots of time to volunteer. I comb through 2015-2018 accepted stats, strategizing what I could do to improve my chances for next year. I've been going over my applications & thinking about how to do things differently next year & doing research on schools to decide where I will apply. It is hard to stay bright eyed & determined, though. I'm super broke & life is so different than it was a month ago. I feel out of sorts & kinda lonely, completely in limbo until my name is chosen from the wait list or it is time to apply for 2019 (oh lord that sounds so daunting!)
Anyway, I just was wondering what the other people in the same situation are up to & hoping for a bit of inspiration.

I am waitlisted at one school, waiting on a decision post-interview at another, and still waiting to hear anything from a third. Despite the uncertainty of where I'll be come fall, I'm doing surprisingly well. I'm working full-time, not taking any classes, and just enjoying my time off now.

It has eased my mind some that my Fall transcripts were received by VMCAS - I was starting to panic a little :scared:

My transcripts still aren't showing up. I ordered them around Jan 7th. Yikes!

Quick question... I just found out I received a small research grant through my current university where I'm finishing my masters ($500, which MIGHT cover the cost of 1 ELISA 🙄). Should I send an email to the two schools I'm still waiting to hear back from (Wisconsin and UPenn), or would that be a pointless thing to update Adcoms on?

Lambeau, this is just my two cents, but for whatever its worth, I would say go ahead, it can't hurt!!!

Purdue and Iowa State Interviews are all done with now. I am completely exhausted! Got back to my hotel and crashed for about 2 hours. I had a great weekend, everyone was so accommodating and super nice at both places 🙂

Who all did you apply to? I went to Iowa's interview on the 18th. Good luck at the rest of your interviews if you have anymore!

I applies to 6 schools: U of Missouri, UPenn, Mich State, Iowa State, Purdue, and NC State. The only interviews that I have had were this weekend, but I really liked both schools and feel like I could be happy at either place (if the odds are in my favor).

Both schools said that we should hear decisions "Mid-February." Happy Valentine's Day :dead:

It's not like we planned to have a good time Valentine's Day or anything lol. I applied to NCSU too, and a bit sad that they won't be mailing anything out until mid-February. Thanks for the anticipation guys.

I applied to four schools. I had one application pulled, rejected at Minnesota, waiting for any news from KSU and ISU. Waiting sucks, but then I suppose I will know what's what about mid-Feb as well.

I plan on celebrating a friend's birthday and spending good time with my SO on Valentine's Day and not checking mail that day!! Of course that means every other day is open for mail call! Haha

I will be celebrating Valentine's Day and try not to think about it. My boyfriend takes me to the circus every year for Valentine's Day since it is in Raleigh around that weekend every year.

Best wishes everyone 🙂

And VMCAS never received my fall transcripts, though my school showed them as mailed 1/7. 😡 Now I have to pay for another transcript and overnight them. And this is all for just one school that I'm 95% sure will reject me, but since it's my IS I feel obligated to follow through.

Anyone else still waiting for their fall transcripts to show up on VMCAS? I sent them approximately 2 weeks ago and I'm starting to worry a bit...

Mine finally showed up. They won't send you an email or anything, I had to go to my VMCAS application and check. It said that 3 have been received, once I clicked on that it showed when they received it.

It took them a couple weeks to post mine as received, but if yours still aren't, you might want to call them since it's so close to the deadline.

Nope, Purdue isn't done yet. I have one with Purdue this Friday! But this past weekend was the last for OOS Iowa interviews. I was there too. As grateful as I am, all this traveling is exhausting...and expensive!
