CA Northstate Interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had an interview that day and got my acceptance letter today.

Hey Congrats! Are you planning to attend CNCP? If so, hopefully Ill see you there!

I have a weird situation. I called them yesterday (02/13) and Gail told me she was sending in my acceptance letter at that moment! <---yes thats how excited i was...anyways, she also mentioned that she was sending me an email right away. I never got the email, so I decided to call them again today just to make sure. I talked to Sydney and she told me that Gail never sent an email, but she mentioned that I should be receiving a letter soon through snail mail since she sent that out TWO days ago (02/12). She never mentioned acceptance letter or anything...this has got me paranoid. Could it be a different "David" that Gail was thinking when I first called her? I did not give her my last name, but I did tell her that my name was David and I interviewed on Feb. 1...The two things thats worrying me is that she never sent me an email when she told me she would and she told me that she was sending in the acceptance letter when I called yesterday (02/13), but when I called today, she told me she sent the "letter" TWO days ago (02/12). What do you guys think??? I was on the verge of cancelling one of my other interviews b/c I thought I got into this school. Do you guys think there may have been a misunderstanding??? I really hope not! 😕

Pharmacy schools are booming...hooray!!!

I think about 9 news schools plan to open this yr. If this pattern holds, the amount of pharmacy schools in US might double in 20 yrs. Which would create more competition for employment, drasticly reduce a pharmacist's salary, make the pharmacy school one attends crucial. We already seeing some of this in places like Los Angeles, where most of the pharm jobs that are open are in bad areas or with terrible working conditions. I see absolutely nothing good coming from this. Reminds me of how in demand computer programers were 15 yrs ago, and the job market for them now.

I was on the verge of cancelling one of my other interviews b/c I thought I got into this school.

As for the miscommunication or whatever it is between you and Gail..I hope that it was YOU she was talking about. But more importantly, CNCP does not know whether or not they receive pre-candidate status until June. If this is the only school you are interviewing at and plan on going to..I suggest you have a plan B mapped out. Until June (hopefully), no one knows if CNCP will be able to enroll students for Fall 08. I'm optimistic about CNCP getting their pre-candidate status, but you never know what can happen... and I would rather be safe than sorry if things go sour for them. Soooo..I would definately attend your other interview and have a choice come June.

For the people who have been accepted,

How long did it take for you to receive the actual letter in the mail after receiving the acceptance email? Thanks..

How long does it take for cncp to review your application?

Since they are a new school there no set time. I think I had applied in early Nov and was invited for an interview in mid dec.

I would try calling them to find out the status of your application.

around 2 weeks.

Just throwing this out there...but for those of you who are accepted to CNCP - have any of you paid the deposit yet? Anyone asked for an extension of some kind or called to tell CNCP that you'll pay once pre-cand is acheived in June? Please share!

I agree, even if you were accepted, I'd still go to that other interview.

So to address what I see are the recurring questions here, I just wanted to let you guys know that I've emailed Gail to confirm if they've finished moving into the new building, and also to ask about the IPPE and APPE rotation sites.

I didn't dare ask about not paying the tuition deposit, because that would be kind of weird LOL... "Hey. You guys aren't accredited yet. I'm not paying up until you guys are...":laugh: But seriously, if they don't get the pre-candidate status this June, Dean Hawkins said he'll return the money in full, so I don't think it's a problem for those of you who are wondering. In the end it is a legit transaction just like all the other pharmacy schools out there. You got nothing to lose, except $500 temporarily (and permanently if you decide to go somewhere else of course).

To veyep: I'm not sure how long it takes for CNCP to review the application. I submitted everything in November like Nae614 and got my interview invitation a month later, and acceptance another month after that. Good luck to you if you/your friends are applying! :luck:

I'm pretty confident that CNCP will obtain pre-candidate status by June. But say, worst case scenario, they fail to obtain that status in June, will accepted applicants be permanently in for the following year? Or will the whole application process start over for the Fall of 09? And regardless of attending a different school or not, wouldn't you still get refunded the $500 deposit?

In the worst case scenario that you mention, I don't know if accepted students would have a guaranteed spot for Fall 2009 because I'm lucky I don't have to worry about that. As for the deposit, yea I was speaking as if CNCP will get its status, so of course in that case you'd lose the $500 forever if you decide to go somewhere else because CNCP would officially be a recognized school by the ACPE. Sorry for the confusion hehe.

I know students who apply to this school and I want them to get accredited, not because i am <not> going there  but to give other a chance, like those who are not accepted to any other schools. Who would want to leave sunny calif...You do get your deposit back if they don't get accredited, but you would loose it if decide not to go there when they get accredited; if you are accepted, you don't need to start another application process, your spot will be save until they get accredited. Keep updating and contact the school.

Just a thought....

I know CNCP is not planning to have a large class size but it seems like a lot of people have been accepted and will be attending the school. It does not seem like CNCP is slowly accepting students (e.g. accepting students a couple of days after the interview) and making sure they don't exceed the expected class size. This is important because one of the mistakes HICP made was accepting way too many students and they couldn't meet the student:faculty ratio required by the ACPE. In addition, HICP couldn't find enough clinical sites for their students. This mistake led to their downfall. So if I may suggest, if you are planning to attend this school, make sure you know how many students they have accepted, how many students have accepted admissions and what will happen if more students accept admissions than planned. Best of luck to you.

I have been in 5 interviews and I have friends in all over the country that are going to different pharmacy schools and some of them actually do interview the students and I hear they will decide of your status in the same day. let's say you have an interview in the morning or noon by after noon they sit down and talk about you and pick the best. It is just sending the letters and paper work that takes about two weeks, but they know you got accepted or not on the same day so CNCP might just be faster in letting people know officially.

I was just wondering what's the phone number of the CNCP admission office? I kept calling today morning, and it kept directing my call to its voice mail. Does anyone know the FAFSA school code of CNCP? I couldn't find it at all, and the deadline of FAFSA is coming up. 😕 Or they don't even have a FAFSA school code because CNCP does not have a status yet?

Thanks

I am amazed that many schools are applying for accreditation this June 2008!!

Pharmacy schools are booming...hooray!!!

Stop cheering...more pharmacists = lower salary for all of us. I hope some of these schools shut down!

P.S. I'm a hypocrite, haha...I'm at a new school. But still!

Lets do a roll call guys...how many have been interviewed and how many have been accepted? 🙂

I was interviewd on January 18th and got accpeted 5 days later. If they like you and think that you're a strong candidate who will be successful in their program, they will accept you.

There won't be a FAFSA code for CNCP. They don't have pre-candidate status for one. Secondly, they are a stand alone school so they don't have other programs that have already received regional recognition. And from what I know, these brand new schools need to be fully accredited to received federal funding for their students (ie. the case with UACP because they are a standalone pharmacy school - they cannot receive federal funding until they graduate their first pharmacy class and receive full accreditation).

In short, CNCP will probably offer students private loans because federal funding is not available.👎

Thanks! I submitted my application in early Feb, but they haven't cashed my check yet! Is it normal?

Yes, this is normal. When I applied and submitted my application fee, they did not cashed my check until three or four weeks later. They are going through a lot of applicants and reviewing a lot of them as well, just be patience, they'll take your money sooner or later, haha. Anyway, I made my tuition deposit to hold my seat about 2 or 3 weeks ago and they still have not cashed it yet either.

This is correct. Private loans, with consequently higher interest rates, are the options available for all students in similar situations with lack of regional accreditation (in the case of CNCP, WASC).

I really don't think we have anything to worry about... I think the reason for the appearance of so many new schools is because of the very reason below. Plus, I would think that ACPE monitors the growth/demand of pharmacists nationally and would not allow such an influx of schools to occur if it would negatively impact the job market (such as a doubling of pharmacy schools).

Employment change. Employment of pharmacists is expected to grow by 22 percent between 2006 and 2016, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.

Jim Jorgenson, administrative director for pharmacy services at University Health Care and an associate dean for clinical affairs at the University of Utah's College of Pharmacy, said there is about a 6 percent increase in new U.S. pharmacy graduates annually, but a 30 percent increase in demand.
"By 2015, the estimate is that we are going to be over 40,000 pharmacists short nationally, and 157,000 short by 2020," Jorgenson said. "We're actually expecting to fill 7.2 billion prescriptions by 2020."

Thanks! I feel less worried. I kept calling them the whole morning. No one picked up my call. I am scared that they are moving to the new building and ignore my application! By the way, could you tell me your stat? I just wonder whether I am above and below average. Thanks!

Yea, sure. When I applied, I received my Bachelor's of Science in Biological Sciences. I did not think that I graduated with a competitive GPA at all. It was a 3.2. It is to my understanding that GPA is only a fraction of the all the things that will be taken into account when they review your application. I am also a tech. at Rite Aid and also at Kaiser Permanente. So they are looking at how well-rounded you are as a student and also as an individual. Ultimately, if you are invited to an interview, this is your time to advertise yourself as an individual. But the best thing to do is to get to know the staff and faculty members who are reviewing your applications. The last time I checked, they have recieved over 350 applications already and that was back in November. So to make yourself stand out among these applicants, call Gail and talk to her, haha. Put your foot in the door. But I have also tried to contact her and the office as well, and I have been getting voicemail messages, so I believed that they are moving to the new building (which by the way is a gorgeous facility). I went and checked it out, still being rennovated). So yea, good luck. Where are you from and what are your stats?

Does it mean that if you don't get an invitation of interview, you will be rejected right away? Or you have to wait till some times around April or May?

Hey try calling this number: 916-273-8901
I was called for my inquiries on that...so check it out!

I heard 2 of the best professors at UOP will be teaching at CNCP this fall. It appears you guys are in good hands. Good luck!

You should definitely try to call them and ask about the status of your application....maybe write a letter of interest. Basically let them know you are very interested in their school.

you guys should show that article to the pharmacists who were working at the 28 Rite Aid stores in Nevada that were closed last month.

So, u think that's an isolated incident? Ok.... In Westwood (two blocks from UCLA), Long drugs just closed several month ago.

Last weekend, i learned that two blocks from where I work(santa monica), Walgreens' who was Open 24 hrs since it was intially opened 6 yrs ago, is now 8-9PM Mon-Fr 9-6 Sat, Sun.

Those are just places that are in the 10 mile radius of my hose.

Ask any Semi knowledgeable pharmacist working in Los Angeles and other areas like that in California they will tell u what's going on.

It seems like there is a big difference between NorCal and SoCal right now in terms of what's going on with our pharmacies. I am from NorCal, and I talked to both my pharmacists and both see no problem in the future as far as getting jobs up here at least. I wasn't even asking in terms of CNCP either--I was asking in terms of coming as a graduate from an out-of-state school. There may be pharmacies closing down in SoCal, but there are none closing up here as far as I know. I think new clinics are being built in NorCal too, and also some institutions are/will be undergoing great innovations.

I have no idea what is going on in SoCal. Maybe USC is just dominating with their massive alumni network down there =P

And your point??? Are you suggesting that there will be an OVERLOAD of pharmacists or something??? 😕 That the development of CNCP will fail miserably???

I just don't understand the reason for all your negative views on CNCP (you just HAD to make your comment in double-size, blue font 👎 )

1. And your point??? Are you suggesting that there will be an OVERLOAD of pharmacists or something??? 😕

2. That the development of CNCP will fail miserably???

Is #1 suppose to be a rhetorical question? A poster earlier was saying horray that 9-11 new schools are opening this yr. I was just pointing out that's not good for the future of the profession and the job market.

I am not going to touch Question #2.

Reason i did blue and bigger font is that the quote functions was not working and i thought that what i wrote was relevant bc it's what i see with my own eyes in real life and not what some economist predictions for the future.

Yeah, seriously, why don't you go onto some other forum and give all your stories...I live in S. Cali and pharmacists are high in demand out here too...your information is irrelevant and has no foundation whatsoever. The pharmacies in your area closing down is not a cause and effect relationship of the lack of need for pharmacists. Maybe all of your negativity indirectly affected their business. I've been working at Kaiser pharmacy as a tech for more than 7 years and they ALWAYS need pharmacists in every area, and are posting new jobs for interns as well. I'm talking about areas in the Inland Empire through Orange County, Victorville, Temecula, out to San Diego, pretty much everywhere. All of your posts are negative, either bashing the career or bashing the school..it's getting pretty old.

1.Yeah, seriously, why don't you go onto some other forum and give all your stories...

2. your information is irrelevant and has no foundation whatsoever.

3. Maybe all of your negativity indirectly affected their business.

1. Ahh, am i making you cry? Do you need a tissue?

2. That only makes you look ignorant and weak, everything i say is backed up by facts. Rite aid in fact closed all those stores. LA is really saturated with pharmacists and if you speak to a pharmacist working in LA, he/she will tell you that most of the jobs that are open are in horrible working conditions.

3. Are you for real? Need I say more?

In terms of LA, the guy is right though, it's tough to get a job in LA and OC outside of that, it's pretty easy. Most of the pharmacists that I met so far were out of staters, not california schools.

I've been keeping up with this thread because I was interested in applying but since I got accepted to another school so I didn't apply.

The only warning I would give any potential student is not about all that accreditation bull crap or northstate not having a name so it's hard to find a job later because most of the pharmacists I met were out of state schoolers and seriously nobody gives a crap later what school you went to, your license is most important.

If you plan on doing hospital pharmacy I would suggest not going to Northstate yet. Retail should be fine for any school but getting the appropriate training for hospital is tough. After graduation, if you try to get a residency it might be harder, just because you didn't get as good of a training as other schools. The reason I say this is because I have a friend from college who is a proctor that does rotations for all the major california schools, he gets students from UOP, USC, UCSF, Western, and Loma Linda at his hospital. He warned me to stay away from the newer schools, like Loma Linda and sort of Western, they don't have the teaching down yet. The quality of students he thought were lacking, not because the students fault but the school is not prepared yet to teach correctly. He could tell when a student was from the more established schools and from the newer schools. This is just one antecdotal evidence and take it for what you will but it seems very legit to me and he is a close friend and gave me the straight poop when I was applying to all the schools.

Please dont call people ignorant and weak. You are rude. If your patient comes to you with a problem are you going to say "am I making you cry? Do you need a tisse?" Get a life!

He is not a patient. he attacked me fist.

haha aw you sounded like a lil kid 🙂 Ok ok well lets all play nice! 😳

I'm having some reservations abt cncp guys. I think the deans is a really cool guy. But i'm just scared of the rate at which he wants cncp to become a really competitive school. I wonder if this will have negative effect on the student attending cncp. Will he fail students left and right until only a few of the brightest are left. It feels like his expectations are extraordinary and he will stop at nothing to become a competitive school in 10yrs or less.

You are definitely welcome to drop by and visit the campus. We have moved as of Feb 1st. Give us a call before you come so we can arrange a tour!!

Again, Congratulations!!! We are thrilled for our inaugural class.

The IPPE will be an average of 4 hrs a week. These will mostly (probably all) be within 30 min of our campus.

Semester Type
2 Retail
3 Retail
4 Hospital
5 Hospital
6 Elective

The APPE will be a mixture of six, 6-week rotations between Retail, Hospital and Electives. These will likely be in Sacramento, but not limited to Sacramento. Of course, this is 3 years away. I will be discussing the desires of site preference and location with each student and I will seek opportunities to match their interests.

The Electives will included offerings of retail, hospital, Ambulatory Care (anti-coagulation, hypertension, diabetes), Administrative (CPhA), BPM (HealthNet, DHS), Compounding…there are many opportunities to consider. I have begun contacting all of these.

This will truly be a dynamic and exciting curriculum.

Enjoy the rest of your undergraduate work. We look forward to having you come by the new campus.

Nice! Shikamaru, you did it again. Thanks for all of the information!! 👍 CNCP seems to be progressing quite nicely. BUT, I do have the same concerns that sunday1 brought up. In the process of establishing this school and making a name for it, I hope the dean doesn't set expectations that are not humanly possible for the majority of the students to achieve. Kinda intimidating. Not saying that I don't want to be challenged, but I don't find comfort in knowing that there is a possibility for the dean to create a curriculum that allows only the top 10% to thrive and complete.🙁

On a different note, my friend is interviewing in Rancho Cordova this Friday. I hope to get many pictures out of the visit.

Ooh! PLEASE MAKE YOUR FRIEND TAKE LOTS AND LOTS OF PICTURES! 😀😀

Wow... interviews are now officially in the school... how I wish I could see too hehe.

I agree about the possibility of creating a nearly impossible curriculum. This is one of the biggest cons for me right now about CNCP because it's unclear how students will do since there aren't any previous students to get insight from. As far as I know based on what the Dean said back in our interview day, I was able to compare that with the curriculum at MCPHS-Worcester and I fear CNCP might be even harder. Everyone should know right now that CNCP is not going to be spoon-feeding their students. They expect their students to be mature enough to be able to do some thinking and learning on their own. This is exactly how it is at MCPHS-Worcester too... but mostly only in the P2 year (P2-P3 years for 4-year schools). The difference is it APPEARS that CNCP will be like that for ALL 3 didactic years... Of course if it still spoon-feeds students during P1 then I'm fine with that. That essentially would be the same as MCPHS for me, except that MCPHS is year-round since it's accelerated.

The bottom line I think is that hopefully people have received a good undergraduate education. I personally think the last time I was spoon-fed was way back in my general bio classes, so thank goodness I feel at least semi-prepared... maybe lol. On the other hand, if some people feel that their college was way too easy, then CNCP might not be the best fit for them...

Hey Steveysmith, what's your deal anyway? Why do you want to be a pharmacist if you think it's sooo hard to get a job? Have you been accepted to Northstate or are you even planning to attend the school? I'm not attacking you, I'm really trying to understand your purpose/role in these forums. You also might want to try applying at other pharmacies as a tech b/c I read what you're making and that's really low compared to other places...(I make almost double that per hour as a tech)...anyway, I have a completely different view on pharmacists, job availability, and all this other stuff you've been putting down...I guess it's based on my own experience and facts working with several different pharmacists and speaking to professors, admissions counselors, etc.

Have you decided on CNCP Shikamaru?? I had the same concern about CNCP--seems like they are going to make the curriculum ridiculously difficult.

I am still leaning towards MCPHS. I'm probably 99% sure I'm going to go there although it's hecka difficult there as well (and I really will miss California *sniff!*). MCPHS started as my #3 choice (the only 2 I had above were SF and SD). CNCP meanwhile started at the very bottom of both my friend's and my list, but it made a very unusual (and huge) jump after our interviews lol.

Well there is at least still some time to decide. Congratulations on your acceptance to Touro by the way! You did it!!! :hardy::hardy:
