Greetings,

I am a recipient of the 4 year HPSP scholarship with the Navy with no prior service. I am a 4th year dental student with ~10 months left before graduation. I have not completed my ODS. I will do that after graduation. I would like to roughly calculate my salary to come up with a budget to tackle my undergrad and personal loans. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Also please add in anything I don't know.

Aside from Base Pay as an O-3 (from what I read of 2018, $4143/month), there's Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), which I get is based on location. Do I get this if I live on base? Do I get it if I'm doing residency (AEGD)?

I am also confused about Multi-year retention bonus. My research says:
"Entitlement pay for dental officers with specialties in oral and maxillofacial surgery, in pay grade below O-7, with at least 8 years of creditable service or, have completed their ADSO for dental education and training, and initial residency training"
Do I qualify?

What about the remaining ones on this pic?

I know I probably won't qualify for ISP, or BCP. I think ASP is possible. What about VSP? From what I understood, that's only after I finish 4 years of AD obligation. Am I wrong? Any clarification for these are most appreciated!

You will not get BAH if you live on base. However I know almost ALL officers live OFF base. You will get BAH regardless if you are doing residency or not. The only other pay you get is BAS which is $257 a month as well as a special pay of about $1666 per month (before tax)if you are licensed. Both bah and bas are non taxable.

You won’t qualify for any other pay for now

Regarding the Special Pay you mentioned for OMS, that's a separate, additional pay they get just for being a surgeon.

If you're single you can get a small place and pocket the rest of your BAH.
I have a family, and living on base was awesome. Base housing is run by private companies contracted through the military. The houses are usually pretty nice and have lots of storage space. Maintenance for housing is usually really fast, and you have unlimited use of utilities. Can you imagine keeping the house at a nice 67 degrees year round and not have to worry about the electric bill?

I found this thread and thought I’d jump in...when would an oms be eligible for that incentive special pay? After residency? Or after all obligations for residency training are paid back?

Basicaly I’m wondering if oms pay changes at all once they graduate residency? or if it stays the same until they are eligible for retention bonuses? I know there is a board certification pay that would kick in after passing the boards maybe a year or so after graduation.

OMS will get 35k extra/yr. The dental pay of 20k/yr increases to 55k/yr 90 days after finishing residency, so Oct1. Nothing else changes until the commitment to the military is completed.

do you get paid more for doing an aegd (the one year residency) or not for general dentists

False. See here: Army AEGD with ACP (Advanced Clinical Practice Program)

1 year AEGD grads can complete the ACP, which I believe pays an extra $5k/year while you're completing your initial ADSO. If you sign an additional contract, you're eligible for a bonus of either $18k, $27k or $35k/year for a 2,3 or 4 year obligation.

I know someone going into an endo residency who completed the ACP. They said they will get the $35k/year bonus while in their residency and then the bonus will increase even more as a specialist.

Two things.

First, this is a Navy thread, and the Navy no longer offers the 1-year ACP program for general dentists except for exodontia, which is a separate postgraduate training program that incurs additional ADSO.

Second, even in the Army, additional training and experience beyond the AEGD is required to get ACP status.

Completion of the 1-year AEGD alone does nothing to get you more pay in any of the branches.

Which is why I provided the link to the thread which actually contains the requirements for ACP status. Yes, it's true that just completing the 1 year AEGD will not increase your pay, but it would be pretty foolish to not complete the requirements for ACP IMO. You would potentially be throwing away hundreds of thousands of dollars by not completing it.

As far as the special pay goes for being licensed... does that mean passing the boards such as the CDCA / NERB? how about the WREB?

thank you
