I wonder if there won't be a wave of secondary invitations going out soon. Most of us apply to many more programs than we can interview at, and accept the first dozen interviews to come our way. If someone gets a new invitation, they'll cancel one of the olds, and the program invites someone else (hopefully you), right?

Then again, I wonder if these second choice interviews are really worth going to--you'll probably end up quite low on the rank list if you're a wait list interviewee.

If there is a second wave (and there will be for some programs) you shouldn't rely on a calendar to divine meaning as to your standing. For as formal as this process is...it can be equally loosey-goosey.

The "second wave" does not mean "second choice". Your file may simply have ended up at the bottom of a stack of high potential candidates and the committee may not have had a chance to discuss yet. This part of the process can be very time consuming and there are only so many hours in a day.

Believe it or not, we want to invite more of you than we possibly can. Hence, wait lists. If you end up on a wait list it means that we can't bring ourselves to cut you. Yes, we want to meet with you if we can, so don't feel like you're the ugly stepsister.

Once you are invited, you pretty much start at square one again. It's anarchy at that point, really. There will be candidates who are super stars on paper, but don't click at the interview and, yes sir, it works the other way, too. And this theory works both ways. You may be surprised to find that a program that is your first choice right now may not be so after your interviews are finished. Interviews are like first dates. Everyone sees a potential fit in the other at first glance, but you have to spend some time to discover whether it feels like a good fit.

Finally...we don't even begin to focus on rankings until after interviews are finished. READ THAT AGAIN, MY FRIENDS. Go back and read it. We sketch together a list after interviews. Then we have meetings in order to play with it some more and we continue to play with it until deadline. That's right. We'll play with it from the end of interviews until June.

This is a marathon, my friends. :luck:

i don't know if it matters to interview in Feb, 4 months before ranking. Are they going to keep the score and rank with the score for each candidate?

Yup! Out of 500+ applications we are going to remember the <50 that we interview. There is a numerical scoring system that is used at our program. This is tabulated and people are placed on the rank list. Those who make a good impression may move above their numerical ranking and those with poor impressions can get kicked off altogether.

We most certainly will remember each and every one of you. And when we sit down (after the interview season is finished) we review all of the stats, the feedback, e-mails, notes from phone calls, photos, and discuss from there. I promise you, we don't forget anyone.

From year to year we even manage to remember people who we didn't interview. Believe it or not. Comes in handy if they apply again or apply for faculty positions in the future.

pls add utsw to the rejection list..

interesting discussion

thank u cards fellow and progcoord.. do look into my file pls.. its probably at the bottom of the pile with a fat guy with buck teeth and thick glasses poring out of it 🙂)

Thank you a lot Coodinator and fellow2007.

IV from Christiana.

I am preparing some questions to ask the PD during interview. For those small community programs, with only 20 case reports and 2 review articles in last 10 years, should I mention research? Should I ask about research time or ongoing projects?

Rejections from JHU and UTSW
now this gets depressing. Cant deny anymore:boom:

So i was speaking to a few of the cardiology fellows at my program and was told that a majority of interview invites should be obtained by the 1st-2nd week of Feb with a few programs inviting a little bit later on. By their report, its pretty safe to assume you are rejected or on the wait list after that.

Gotta say this is most disconcerting, since I myself only have one interview. Things are not looking good. Can anyone else comment about what they know.

It is still early in the process. I guess AMGs have gotten anywhere between 2-4 interviews so far. Good IMG applicants have 1-2, while the rest are waiting. I went through last years IV calls, and it seems that the two weeks of Feb are busy. Lets hope things brightens up..

I agree with the above post, just looking at last years thread, it seems like the slow trickle of January led into a flood of invites in February. I also noticed that many California programs didn't send invites until March. For what its worth.....weekends suck. Hopefully, the Super Bowl will be a worthy distraction although it will be hard to beat last year's game.

Still no news today. Have been expecting a wave of IV from today.

And the best part is, the ERAS post office will be down from 2/3-2/5 for updates so we can expect to hear nothing through it from tomorrow until Thursday.

That's not entirely true. Some programs invite later, like end of February or even in March. However, it is true that the majority invite people in the first 1/2 or so of February, and a few invite early (like January).

no news today, it is getting very frustrating, anybody got any 👍 👎

Sorry to say optimus, tomorrow will probably suck every bit as much as today. ERAS is going down from 6am tomorrow until 6am on 2/5. We might as well be on the dark side of the moon the next couple of days. I guess that's fine since i'm on call. The only activity would be direct e-mails or phone/snail mail.

"COLDFUSION 8 APPLICATION (In process of Migration...)"

Am getting this message at the top of myeras in red.

Sounds so cool. Like something out of Half Life or the Matrix... 🙂

They must be upgrading servers - Cold Fusion is a macromedia product for servers.

I did hear from University of Cincinnati 1.5 weeks ago. They said their invites will happen in the 1st 2 weeks of Feb.

And we still wait.

Congrats! I bet you got the IV via snailmail.

Another day goes by with zero news. PGY 3, top 25 program, some research. Zero interviews. One rejection (Hopkins)

Univ of Missouri-Columbia interview at 630 pm today
Univ of Missouri-Columbia rejection today. Do you guys care putting ur credentials? just want to know what made the difference. I am IMG, PGY2, small community hosp, good score and research, still rejection. thx

I feel some of your pain, I got no news today as well. I figured today would be the day since eras is done with their upgrade. For those of you that haven't heard, I wish you all the best of luck.

I must say I am not optimistic at this point, given many programs I applied to are programs that have offered interviews. I agree with dr nice, I think we are at a point where no news is not good news. The way I see it, chances are rejections are coming probably later on.
