*My science GPA is 3.1 allopathic, 3.35 osteopathic

I am a senior, but I plan to apply in May (taking a year off)

Some of my extracurriculars:
-President of an academic (science) organization
-E-board on AMSA
-Member of a service fraternity
-Research assistant for 3 years & I have presented this research a few times at various research symposiums
-I am a paid tutor in the hard sciences at my university
-Physician shadowing ~20 hours
-Probably around ~20 volunteer hours; I plan to volunteer more as I am taking a year off after graduation to hopefully work in a lab & volunteer

I would like to know what my chances are for MD as well as DO schools...
and what schools would I have the highest chances with?

Thank you!

Unless you can really buff up your ECs I wouldn't apply in June. Your GPAs are really low for MD and your ECs seem to be really weak. Stats wise you are a much better fit for DO but your ECs ...

Hi can you explain to me what I am lacking in regarding ECs other than volunteer hours? I have two leadership positions including president and three years of research experience. I'm seriously very surprised about this being the deficit in my resume but I would very much appreciate elaboration. Thank you!!

Not very high at all for MD, and also doubt any DO schools except the new ones would bite because your EC's you are showing are bare bones... I would try and REALLY beef up clinical and non clinical volunteering.

Do you have any clinical experiences? What are they? Hospital
Work? Hospice? Planned parenthood? You need some more shadowing too. Most people say around 50 hours is good-including time with a PCP. What have you done to serve the underserved? Have you done activities to show your altruistic side? Habitat for Humanity? Homeless shelters? Etc. What does your "service fraternity" do? Your research seems good but do you have any publications? Where did you present - at a campus conference, national
conference?

Where do you live in Illinois? Do you have the MSAR? If not you might want to buy it and do some research checking out stats for various MD schools. There is a DO school
In Downers Grove (CCOM) that like high MCAT scores but your GPAs are pretty low for them but you can certainly try.

One thing to remember is that many schools don't look positively on future activities listed on primaries because in many cases life intervenes and the activity doesn't get done. So don't plan on applying and listing stuff you plan to
do. Do it and then apply.

So, I guess I left a lot out. 20 hours at a Girl Scout program in an underprivileged underfunded church, 60 hours of volunteering from the service fraternity, the service is varies; improving the city, helping domestic violence victims, fundraising, soup kitchens, etc.

I have shadowed two doctors so far.

As far as volunteering, I was hoping that picking up more hours and getting to around 50-80 within this year would be feasible/adequate.

Not published but in the process... I wrote the intro to the paper I've been researching on. It's neuroscience research.

As well, I'm graduating with two bachelors of sciences. Cellular biology and neuroscience

I'm doing very well and taking a lot of bio electives this semester and I'm very sure I will get near straight As this semester. I have been doing very well for the last three years of college, my freshmen year was particularly detrimental to my gpa because I had no idea what I was doing. So I have an upward trend

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE??

You still haven't mentioned it? You need it! And you need some additional
shadowing!

Yes my volunteer hours that I originally mentioned ~20 was at a hospital and I was hoping to pick up more hours there and get that number to around 80 at the end of the year or even semester. Like I said, I am not applying right now but at the end of this school year. I thought that would be allotting myself enough time to get my volunteering & shadowing in order now that I have gotten my Mcat out of the way

You are competitive for most DO schools so apply to at least 10 and you should receive several interviews. For MD work on increasing your GPA to 3.4 or higher before your graduate and add more shadowing and clinical volunteering hours as others have mentioned. For MD schools you could try:
Illinois
Rosalind Franklin
Loyola
Medical College Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumont
Western Michigan
Quinnipiac
Vermont
New York Medical College
any new schools that open in 2018 (Seton Hall, Henricopolis, etc.)

You have plenty of time to get a good 100+ hours in clinical volunteering and some more shadowing so your current plan sounds good. Do well in your remaining classes and you will have a great shot at DO, maybe even a few MD schools.

Make sure you get a DO letter if you apply.

If you have time for a job I would suggest getting a job as an ER scribe. Lots of clinical experience that you can add to your CV and you can count those hours as shadowing as well. Plus, you will get great letters of rec from both DO's and MD's. I think overcompensating in EC areas would help quite a bit.
