    • Can I get by with the DAT scores I have?
    • My dad has been a resident in Virginia for almost a decade. Can I apply as instate for VCU School of Dentistry?
    • This will be my second time applying, but I did not apply seriously last cycle (meaning I applied late, had a weak application, knew I wasn't going to get in) because I wanted to see how the application works in order to apply ASAP this year without problems. I also only applied to 6 schools. Can I say that I am a first time applicant on my 2017 application since I will be applying to 10+ NEW schools (I will only reapply to 3/6 schools from last cycle). It's a weird question, but I don't want the new schools to think they are my second choice.
Thank you so much for your help!!

Does your dad claim you as a dependent on his taxes?

Will be responding later tn/early tomorrow

I have been looking at your thread but my biggest problem right now is making a list of schools to apply to. I have a primitive list and wanted to ask if you know what I should add/remove:

Ah.. damn. Didn't think about that. No he doesn't.

I would doubt that you would eligible for instate tuition then.... unless you've already established dual state residency.

You might just be more likely accepted to VCU (w/o instate tuition) because of your strong ties to VA. At least you have a great state like Georgia, where you are actually from: cheaper tuition and heavy instate preference (~90%). I would rather be a GA resident then VA if it just came up to getting into dental school.

Yeah, so you know youre in a great position. If I were you, I would list all the universities by $$$ and chose the cheapest. NYU is expensive (Im talking 550k at graduation). UT schools are like 250k. Unless you are rich and REALLLLLLYYYY want to specialize, go with the cheapest school.

Will you be applying to schools in Canada, or schools in the US as an international applicant? Either way might be pretty tough given your current GPA.
Just US, I'm hoping to wait till next year to reapply and raise my GPA to a 3.5 or 3.6.

I think I mentioned this before, but I'm still surprised you didn't get in on the first cycle. Definitely follow up with the Texas schools and consider downplaying your previous medical school aspirations as much as possible. Your chances should still be good as your DAT and GPA are solid. Not sure if you're interested in staying in Texas, but if you have interest in OMFS and Endo I would definitely look at private schools as well. How many schools did you apply to the first time?

LOL yeah everyone is still wondering why I didnt get in, including my academic advisor haha

I applied to some rather oos unfriendly schools, total of about 10 including TX schools. Only feedback I got was from Baylor who said maybe its because I was out of school since 2015. I also think having taken the MCAT three times did not help.

I am interested in staying in TX and hoping I can specialize from here. I briefly addressed why I switched to dentistry in my PS without actually stating it verbatim.

To be fair I only had about 80 hours of shadowing and about 75 hours of volunteering at the time of last application and was not an RDA.

Also, any quick suggestions for private schools that I would be competitive at and would make it easier to specialize? I feel like Columbia and Harvard are a bit out of reach with my DAT and GPA

apply to rutgers + a bunch of private schools (nyu, tufts, touro, etc.). Your science GPA is a low so thats why you want to apply to a bunch of private schools. You can throw in some out of state schools if you want (i.e. uconn), but your GPA is low so idk how competitive you will be for them
Definitely apply to schools in the Northeast, your chances are good overall. Only thing holding you back is the GPA, but your DAT should be able to balance it out. Schools like UConn/Stony Brook would be a bit of a reach with the GPA, but may still be worth applying to.
Thanks guys, I appreciate it. Yeah I wouldn't mind attending private. Glad I at least have a shot there.

Hey, I'm not Feralis or Tyjacobs, but i would recommend that you only apply to Texas schools if that is where you would like to go. I only applied in state and it was the best decision i have made, there is no point in my opinion applying somewhere you wouldn't go, for example would you actually attend NYU?

Assuming you have average interview skills, you'll be fine for the Texas schools. I would honestly only apply to like 2 out of state schools at most if i were feeling a little insecure with my interview abilities.

If those are all schools you'd be happy to attend then keep them, but consider removing the ones you realistically wouldn't want to go to because you don't need too many safety picks. You have a great shot at pretty much any school with your stats. If you're interested in specializing add in the Ivies. You have a good shot at just about any school that takes OOS students.

So not trying to act like the Texas schools are perfect, but don't you think the chances of specializing are still very high just attending a texas school already? For example San Antonio has a lot of students who decide to specialize.

Depends on the specialty, but if it requires a high class rank or outstanding performance then sure it's totally doable from Texas schools, just a lot more difficult. A lot of strong candidates are going to stay in Texas for the low tuition and ranking high among them is challenging. I think a lot of pre-dents underestimate the difficulty of ranking high in dental school and any school that lets you bypass that in some way (e.g. UConn, Harvard) is a major plus.

FeralisExtremum:

A bit unsure about your comment. Are you saying I can add more schools after I see how the DAT retake goes?

Have not taken A&P yet, but will take during Fall 2k17 if really needed. I’ve heard some schools may still accept as long as I take A&P before matriculating? Besides having extensive piano training, I also was semi-pro gamer (included for dexterity purposes, and quit early b/c grades became impacted).

Questions:
I’m based in CA so my top schools are USC and Western. How are my chances to get in to those specifically?
Also, I realize my GPA isn’t as stellar as I wanted it to be… so wondering what other schools should I apply to? Really looking for some guidance or suggestions to any schools.

Good shot to get interviewed from usc and western. Apply to as many private schools as you can (you should consider applying to the east coast ones) + loma linda because your sci gpa is a lil low but your dat score off sets it for these schools. Apply to around 14-16 total

As a California resident with so many choices, why would your top choices be two of the most expensive schools in the state?

Shoot for UCLA or UCSF

Science gpa is low for both schools i mean OP can apply there its just that his shots of getting interviews arent grear

LA/SF will definitely be my hail mary choices, i just don't have the GPA to really expect an interview lol.

His DAT is pretty great, especially in the science sections. Averages are averages, some will be accepted with stats below the average, some above. I'm not saying to expect acceptances from the schools, just saying his GOAL should be UCLA or UCSF, not USC and Western, especially as a CA resident.

Which school did you attend? Feel free to PM if you don't want to disclose it publicly, it may change how your GPA is looked at. The DAT is strong, GPA is a bit lower which will affect how competitive you are at certain private schools that would have been a good fit if you're interested in OMFS. Once I know which school you attended I should be able to give more specific feedback on where to apply.

Which schools are these?

Can you give some more detail on what kind of graduate program you went through? Was it a master's with a science emphasis, what kind of courses did you take? Doing well in the graduate program tends to help make up for lower undergrad GPA, but the undergrad GPA still gets some consideration and is a bit low + the DAT is below average as well. I would retake the DAT but the time you have left until the application cycle opens is not much. Nonetheless, you could try retaking and then submitting updated scores by late June/early July for consideration. VCU probably won't consider you instate unless you've specifically been living in the state, the residency of parents is typically not considered. You cannot say you're a first time applicant - the question asked is on the AADSAS application if you've ever applied before, and since you have, it doesn't matter which specific schools you have or haven't applied to before. Apply VERY broadly (15+ schools) and make sure they're OOS friendly.
Thanks for answering my questions! I appreciate the advice!

The master's program was all upper level science courses (endocrinology, tumor immunology, medical microbiology, bacterial pathogenesis, biochemistry, a public health course on tobacco, and two mediocre/bull**** science classes (biosafety & bioethics and biotechology)). I've completed 36/40 required hours for the degree. I'll be retaking my DAT mid June, so I'm really hoping for a 20+ TS.

Probably referring to Harvard/Columbia/Penn. There are state schools that are just as good for that but more importantly you have the best avatar on this website

I don't see no John Wall in his avatar, what you talking about?

You are right that some people below the averages but it is very hard to predict who those people will be. I am making recommendations (which obviously can be incorrect). It is very expensive to apply to dental school. I dont know the financial situation of the OP but if OP is low on cash and cant apply to many schopls, UCLA and UCSF wouldnt be the best places to apply. However, if money is not an issie OP is more than welcome to apply to both schools to see what happens.

I agree with this. Applying to UCSF/UCLA still is fine, but the odds are against you with the science GPA. The DAT is solid but applying from California is tough so apply broadly.

Never hurts to add schools that are international friendly but you are a very strong applicant. I would keep UCLA and UCSF, you have a shot at both despite the fact that they don't take too many international students. Add UDM and Case. Not sure if Tufts takes too many international students.

IT is my guy. Anyone know how they fixed his avulsed tooth

Never hurts to add schools that are international friendly but you are a very strong applicant. I would keep UCLA and UCSF, you have a shot at both despite the fact that they don't take too many international students. Add UDM and Case. Not sure if Tufts takes too many international students.

Thank you! I will look into adding those schools to my list 🙂
