Hi all,

I was wondering what my chances at dental schools in NYC are and any comments will be appreciated. Please be straightforward.

So I messed up early in UG due to numerous problems. I finally decided to pursue dentistry in my final year and that's when I changed my major from chemistry to biology and averaged a 3.76 for the year. However my overall is at 3.1 and about the same for my BCP. My upper level bio courses however are most As, with a B+ in one and a B+ in biochemistry. My math grades are terrible since I took them early on in college. I'm currently studying for the DAT and it's gone quite well. I'll be taking it next year and applying the year after with some grad coursework. I'm aiming for a 26+ (high I know but I'm quite good with the DAT material since I took much harder courses and have been studying for a while). What do you guys think my chances are? No I don't want people to give comforting answers, rather straightforward answers. Thanks.

We all took much harder courses. That doesn't equate to much.

I'm also studying much longer than the average person. And scoring around the 90th percentile on practice tests for the subjects I've covered with months of practice left.

Your GPA is still "low". But get a 22+ and you should be fine.
Do you know if NYC dental schools look more toward grad coursework gpa rather than ug? And would my final year upward trend be good enough to be considered an upward trend by dschools? The year before that it was a 3.3.

No I believe upward trend is something like 60+ credits.

Some schools will look more towards your SMP GPA vs your UGPA as sort of "forgiveness" but UGPA is still a factor.

I know several people from my SMP that were favorable in the eyes of NYU because of their SMP GPA.

I can only speak for Buffalo, which isn't "NYC", but I do know that they too take into consideration your SMP GPA.
