Just curious what the age ranges are in some of the pod classes...I am starting at OCPM in August and just turned 35. Will I be the "crazy old man" in the class???

At DMU this past year, the 2010 class ranged from 22 to 31. I do know that other classes have students older than that too. 👍 Don't sweat the age range. Nobody pays attention to that.

I THINK the average age for the class of 2010 at OCPM was 26. I am pretty sure other schools have similar numbers.

Age is noting but a number, and your experience and (likely) maturity to realize that you must put drinking and partying largely on hold during your education will give you an advantage over some younger students who are still trying to stay highly involved in the social scene.

My 2009 class has a few non-trad students who worked for awhile or are changing careers. Barry also has a lot of international students and ethnic diversity, so there are always at least one or two foreign trained MDs, vets, etc in each class.

I appreciate the feedback and look forward to finally pursuing my dream (after being stuck in banking for the last 7 years) !!!:biglove:

I will be starting Scholl at the ripe old age of 33 this year; so I guess I will be the crazy old woman there.😀

At Moon Boot Pod U, ages range from childish to adolescent to mature... Lol/ (this includes faculty).

Think of attending high school as a 35 y/o.

Will you fit in? I guess it depends on your own level of development and that of your individual classmates.

More mature may not necessarily = better fit.

This is a very expensive and serious decision at your age, please don't take ANY of it lightly.

I'm young for my moon boots and I still have to shake my head at times.

Good luck, I hope you really did your homework.

whiskers, that was a really stupid post. of course age does not matter. In undergrad, I guarantee everyone had people over the 30 in many of their classes.... i'll be at OCPM also goodluck man

I really don't know what to make of this............😕

Dont mind Whiskers , he just has a certain charm to his posts 😀

But I really have heard medical/dental school is like elementary or high school all over again.

I'm sorry that my post didn't digest well with you.

Typically, from my experience, adults allow others they don't agree with have their opinion too without calling their opinions stupid. But it was funny none-the-less.

But maybe calling things one doesn't agree with 'stupid' is actually a more adult coping mechanism that every provider should incorporate into his or her professional demeanor.

Anyway, I so like totally believe that like age does matter...

like, I mean it's so totally like easier to relate to kids and adults of your same like maturity level.

Didn't I tell you?

I lost all my charm on my first and last date...

Hope your Pod school is not in india, coz in india they have so narrow mind that even if you go to med school at age of 25. chances are you will not be able to survive even 1 yr. They will tease you, harass you, call you by old names, etc .

In India, entry age of med student is 18yrs old (straight from high school) maximum one could be 20. Iam joining Pod school at 21. And that it self is looking to my family old.

So i guess you are right, it not only depends on the individual but also the mentality of the classmates. So far from my experience in this great country on god's green earth. i have found people to be mature, sensible and reasonable. I doubt anyone would bother another person just because of his age.

Let's hope for a little more professionalism in school than what people are speaking of here.

thats true. i hope there are some other little indian guys roaming in scholl whom people can think oh that could be cool_vkb or this could be cool_vkb. while i stay from sight. Or else if i write something bad here then whole scholl will know who wrote that. though i would never do that.

i will be 37 yo, two days after classes start, but you would never guess i was 😉 (just kidding) 😀

This is true for a lot of places.^ When you put a lot of young people in a new city where they know basically nobody, that'll happen.

Podiatry school is pretty intense and you will be with the same group of people for 4 years. A lot of people in the class will not only study, but also hang out with, date, etc with students from the pod class/school. As you can guess, that makes for some good and also some problems. I even go to a school that has a huge number of undergrad and other grad students (many allied health), yet most of the pod students seem to hang out just with mainly just other pods. You definetely want to be friendly to everyone who acts that way to you, but try not to get caught up in the gossip, cliques, and drama which will likely evolve.

My advice would be to try to find a reasonably diverse group of friends and activities while in pod school for reasons of both networking and sanity. If you are a good and hard working student, you won't have a ton of social time or be too concerned about being Mr. Popular anyways, but you can mix it up as far as who you hang out with. Even if you go to a free-standing pod school, make friends at the gym, the nearby university libraries, the coffee shop, etc as well as just in pod class. I like meeting fellow allied health students (PA, nursing, pre-med, etc) and sharing experiences. Many of them have little idea what a podiatry education is like, and I also get to learn about their classes, rotations, job duties, etc. Things may get a bit stagnant if you are going to class, studying, socializing, dating, etc all with the same small group of pod people all of the time.

I appreciate your posts wiskers. Sometimes I think we go/went to the same school.
I enjoy his posts too.^ Pre-pods need to take the stuff he says with a sizable grain of salt since it is overly pessimistic and candid, but, as a pod student with a sense of humor, some of the stuff is just plain funny.

My experiences have been the complete opposite...I began grad school at age 30. Many of my classmates were in their mid 20's and many of them became and have remained extremely close friends of mine. I'll be turning 33 this summer and will start at TUSPM this fall...

I would have never guessed that. You look much younger!

Socalbetty, grad school and professional school are two very different entities.

I am not saying that I haven't seen older students regress to adolescents or childhood upon their matriculation. In fact I have seen a many do just that.

It's kind of entertaining to see a mom or dad shed their age and morph into adolescence and some even childhood and fit right in as BFFs texting their BFFs on their neon cell phones during lecture and clinics. "I mean, like, OMG did you see what Mr. Hankey wore today?

I hope your luck continues;

but bring your parents along just in case.

Hi,

Don't worry, I'm in my 3rd yr at Scholl and I'm 35. I am the oldest person in my class, and I do get the crazy "old" comments from time to time, but it is all in good fun. I don't get as many invites to parties as the rest of the class, but that's OK too, I'm past that part of my life by now. One thing I do notice is that they do look to me for guidence. My experience in life is something they don't have. Lots of them are only book smart, because that is all they have ever known, school. I've been out there, had a job, made money, and have given that up to go back to school. For the people in my class that have never had a job...they just don't realize what is really out there facing them in the future. So the age part, I wouldn't worry about, but as far as that "life experience", enjoy school, only you know what you have to go back to if it doesn't work out.
