We start on Tuesday, Sept. 4th.

This summer I spent 2 weeks externing in Pittsburgh with a veterinary neurologist and am just finishing up 2 weeks in a rotation in the Neurology service at our teaching hospital. 🙂

Long week.
First week of junior surgery is officially done though.
Six hours yesterday, just under five hours today. Got to neuter half a dog, spay half a dog, celiotomy, gastrotomy, gastropexy, chest tubes, and lots and lots and lots of simple interuppted. Overall it went better than expected.

After having junior surgery this week, I now have to study for an exam, take said exam at 6:45 am tomorrow, and then drive to KY for OEPS conference. Oh yeah, and I should probably pack at some point. Sleep? What's that?

At least my awesome sx partner volunteered to write the post-op report, so thats one less thing for me to do tonight. So glad the next couple weeks are light-er.

Dude, third year is kicking my ass. I really hope it's just this week though that's crazy like this. And we didn't get to do our neuter today. We got a spayed female so we ended up just doing the gastrotomy and gastropexy on her. Anesthesia for me tomorrow. I hope my 4th year is a fast surgeon because I want it to be the weekend soooo bad!

I'm sure you're right but it hasn't been too bad. I just want to sleep. And don't get too excited about free afternoons. They will just make you go be the anesthetist for the seniors.

It's going around our class, too from what I have heard. Time to become super antisocial!

So I have figured out that this year is going to be like this: one week where it feels like we are sprinting a marathon and the next where it feels like we are just running a marathon. At least until they get the rest of our surgery schedule figured out that is. Busy busy busy so far.

Yeah, but you guys are going to school with a ton of straight out of high school kids, yeah? I would imagine they are the vast majority that are failing out.
EDIT: Heh, I'm just thinking about if I had to go straight from high school to vet school. Suckers.

Actually...no. First year, yeah, but after that everyone is on a level playing field again. And I know many N Americans who haven't passed.

But I agree...going right after high school would have sucked.

But all the UK kids are still a lot younger right? They do the 5 year program instead of 4? I'm surprised it's not all the youngins failing out.

Haha I felt the same way as a 2nd year about 3rd year. My roomies are the year above me and I would see all of their study material and want to cry. It WAS nice finally being able to move on from anatomy and phys etc and studying clinical stuff....

And I passed...so can you! 🙂

No, not all of them are younger. We have quite a few UKers and EUers (Ireland) in the 4 year program here. The ones that I know of in the 5 year program are a bit younger but I think there are some older ones in there as well.

I mean...i'm in the 5 year program cuz it's the only one Glasgow has.

But yes, the first year the majority of my class of 120 were 18 yrs old, but plenty of UKers do gap years or other degrees before entering. And there are about 30-40 N Americans in each class...and many of them are non-trads.

And I am amazed daily by how smart these kids are...many of our "gunners" are the young ones lol. The rest of us are like...yayyyy we passed let's go drink now.

I am in the 5 yr program as well here..... the majority of my classmates are 18 yr olds... there are a few non-trad Irish students who are like 24-25 (like 2) and then there is a 28 yr old guy and a 30 yr old girl... I am the oldest...... and I am the only N.A...... I am an oddity... The other girl from the states got pregnant last year and dropped out....

But yeah vet is the hardest for them to get into here.... they have to have ridiculously high scores on their leaving certs, so they are quite smart.....and while most of them do not have the practical experience... they do still have the academic drive to pass.....

And yay! Phase one of setting up clinical schedules is done. My base schedule isn't total crap and only requires one switch request; and I managed to get both my externships lined up. It's getting scary folks!

on one hand, I like that I can avoid pretty much all horse-related things. on the other hand, i am not good with decisions at all.

i don't wanna give up the cows and goats and sheepssss and i don't wanna do a boring dermcation with yeasty ears and flea allergy dermatitis by the boatload. but i have this little interest in neuro that says "gotta do what the SA internships want you to dooo" and that's probably ALL THE SA SPECIALTIES

i'm not very good at pro/con lists. to be honest the only real thing kind of holding me back from just saying yep wanna do food/small is that my actual clinical experience with food animals isn't that great (though I've got a pretty good knowledge base) and it intimidates me a bit.

I'm so glad I don't have to do anything but horses 4th year except for ophthalmology, I won't lie. I'll only see Nyanko to drink, so we'll both have lots of stories to tell about the people on our rotations who are driving us nuts.
