Class of 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
they told me my MCAT was "acceptable" and in the same email told me MCATs have a "3-year limit" from the date of matriculation.

when i emailed back and asked if the matriculation date was in august and if my "3-year date" was in July, they said "yes to both."

so now i'm wondering if their "acceptable" in the first email was meant to be "unacceptable", but I think it might be rude to email again...

but they're being so unclear!
Maybe you can call and talk to someone in person? It sounds like there are some email communication problems.

Definitely do this, hope you don't have to conquer the MCAT again!

Well, I guess it's not really in person. Over the phone, in real time

I AM FINALLY DONE WITH JUNIOR YEAR! Did my last two presentations today. Best part about MPH is no finals 🙂 Now onto worrying about my MCAT score that comes out in 5 days.....

Good luck with the end of the year everyone!

Haha. Ambiguity FTL. Sorry to hear that

Congrats! How do you like your MPH program?

I've always been kind of curious: what opportunities are there for an MD with an MPH? Is that a route to eventually do research? I know that several schools really emphasize public health (Tulane), and large amounts of their students do dual degrees.

I absolutely love it. Most people get an MPH to supplement an MD, but I would love to have a primary focus with an MPH.

So research is more for MD/PhD, but with an MD/MPH, you would focus more on community initiatives and health for a large population (such as a neighborhood, city, county, etc). It has more to do with promoting healthy behavior to a wide audience and figuring the best way to encourage people to change or maintain health.

I personally think MDs and MPHs go hand in hand. They complement each other really nicely, especially if one of your goals is to work to promote health with large groups of people

Congrats! Just out of curiosity, what concentration was your MPH in? I've been thinking a lot about applying for a combined MD/MPH program!

So early, not even the semester schools around here end this early. Do you start classes in like July or something lol.

oh and congrats on still having one more year left in undergrad, make sure to make the most of it. And by most of it, I mean party 😀

Yeah, me too. What are the different options for concentration? I think I've heard about an epidemiology one? And congrats btw!

Yeah there's definitely a lot of schools that have epidemiology concentrations. From what I've heard/read about, typical concentrations may also include family/community health, global/international health, health law, quantitative/biostatistics, health care management/policy, etc. But I'm assuming it's really school-specific in what they offer.

I feel like there's a lot of opportunity for physicians with this additional education

Yeah its definitely school specific. Mine offers a health policy option, a population health research option (which is more of epidemiology combined with statistics), health promotion and disease prevention (which is my concentration) and a global health track.

You can even double major or have a major and a minor. There's so much you can do with it. I would highly recommend everyone look into an MPH!

Hahah no we started end of August. My actual semester doesn't finish until May 6th, but because all of my classes only had papers/presentations, I finished them extremely early. Presentations are actually going on for a few weeks but I was lucky and got the first day for all of them, so I'm done. 😀

HUGE DILEMMA:

Ok so my committee writes letters in three batches. The way they do it is they have three review groups June, September and October. Each "review group" has a certain MCAT cutoff date you must meet to be eligible for that group. I moved my MCAT from the end of April to the end of May, MISSING the June review group and placing me in the September review group meaning I won't be complete til god knows when....what should I do?! This is ridiculously frustrating, I don't wanna rush my MCAT but this is going to SCREW me, should I abandon the committee letter and submit individual letters instead? I know this isn't recommended but idk what to do......who's got any ideas?

Yikes. If they don't even start looking at you until September, does that mean that you won't have a letter until October-ish? 😱

I wish I could tell you if this is an acceptable situation to skip the committee letter. You could move the MCAT up and study double-time (if there are still seats available).

my idea was to use interfolio and send the committee letter as an update? only idea I have....no way I can move the MCAT up in midst of end of year papers/exams

Yeah they leave you no choice. Send them an email stating your position, in a kind tone, asking if there are any other options, and stating that to maximize your chances you will otherwise have no choice but to use interfolio so you are able to apply in a timely manner

Also, can't they just write for you before you take the MCAT? Prehealth committees these days, honestly! It's like they want to ensure you're the top candidate before they write anything nice

yeah that's my thing, if you have all my LOR's what else do you need? 😎

Another thing I would consider doing is getting in touch with your state med school, asking if you could meet with the dean or director of admissions to discuss the school/your application at some point. if you get a meeting, focus it around your application and what you can do to be a better applicant/better future physician, but also ask them what they think about you applying interfolio due to your situation. you'll at least hear from what may be one of your more important schools whether they consider applying without committee recs a small 'red flag'

I thought I would be at a disadvantage since my school doesn't do the committee letter thing, but after seeing all the hassle that people have over it, I'm glad that my school doesn't have one. Hope everything works out for you YNK22

Thanks, I'll figure it out. I'll keep you guys updated, honestly right now my main focus is killin this MCAT I can't be preoccupied with some many things.

appreciate it👍

this next week is dedicated to writing my three papers, so why is it I'm on SDN and watching the NBA playoffs?

The same question I'm asking myself while I sit in front of this MCAT Physics book 🙄

second page doesn't work for me. I'm going to a concert tonight. What are y'all up to?

I'm in Vegas, son.
I brought my MCAT and ochem book here, hoping I would study.
I've failed.

wow, to vegas? this is like saying you jumped off a building today hoping you would fly.

not that i'm judging 😉 i did some pretty heavy lying to myself about when/how much i'd study too.

I couldn't even pretend to myself that I would get any type of studying done in Vegas. Only reason why I've held off any trips until after my MCAT. And its killing me. :scared:

Have fun though, and put an extra shot of everclear in your fat tuesday's yardstick for me 👍

Oh my gosh, I had trouble studying at home, let alone Vegas haha. Can't even imagine that.

I'm trying to work on my PS while at my boyfriends place, who I only see a few times a year. Needless to say, its not going so well haha, especially because of the anxiety from getting my MCAT score on Tuesday. :scared:

Watching the latest episode of Community, omg I'm dying here quite possibly the funniest episode yet.:laugh::laugh:

good luck with your score, here's to hoping for a 30+ :luck:

MCAT sucked me away from this thread for a while, now I'm back!

Beware, multi-quote ahead.

I'm pretty much ready to do this!! AMCAS is out pretty soon guys, good luck! :luck:

Seriously. I have exams during the week it opens, after that I'll be working on it. Let's get this roller coaster started.

This is a big one... Even San Francisco is a little too chilly for me

It doesn't leave me with many options, but I'll learn to love the cold if I have to 😀

Agreed. Weather is not a huge deal breaker for me. Grew up in California, went to school on the East Coast. Experienced both and can live in both. I might prefer a school that is located in or near a city though. We'll see what happens.

i like the way you think sir, weather isn't a factor for me...as long as I get that MD, I will go anywhere

+1

class of 2016,

I just read this, pretty interesting:

http://www.theatlantic.com/technolo...-ever-use-two-spaces-between-sentences/69579/

Slimmed down my PS a bit 🙂

Interesting, indeed. Will look over my PS with some of this info in mind.

I am considering getting an MD/MPH as well. I took a PH class and found it really interesting and was thinking of ways I can fuse that with my MD in the future.

Yeah, me too. What are the different options for concentration? I think I've heard about an epidemiology one? And congrats btw!

Was going to answer, but...

Someone gave a much better answer already. Lots of interesting fields, wouldn't know which one to choose.

Dude, this sucks. Why the huge gap between June and September? Our committee works from May - July because they know how important it is to be early. I wouldn't skip your committee letter (because if your school is known for having it, it would be a red flag if you don't have one), however, I like your idea of discussing it with your state schools and contacting some other schools to gauge their opinions, it might work in your favor.

Take your MCAT when you are ready and beast it. :luck:

You mean to tell me that you went to U of Wisconsin during their amazing year this year and didn't go to a single football game? you crazy. I would totally wake up at 7 to grill brats and drink beer if my schools football team were that good. Hell, I'd do it if even if they weren't good that's how much I love football.

😳

I was there from 2006-2008.. I don't think they were good those years? 😕

It just seemed like so much trouble getting football tickets (and I tried!) that I ended up giving up. I did attend a men's hockey game and had an absolute blast!

oh, thought you were there this year 😛. My friend's doing his PhD over there and is having an absolute blast (with the exception of the weather) while I was stuck here with my no college football team school 🙁. I'm so jealous that he gets to go to a school with such spirit and actual competitive football/basketball teams. I'm pretty sure that's going to be my #1 priority in choosing a med school come June 😀

My school doesn't have a college football team either - and it sucks.

I try to like football, but I just can't. It's so booooring. Maybe if my school had a team?

Baseball, on the other hand, is a beautiful game... 🙂

IMAO, I would skip the committee letter and would ask other people to start writing some letters now (5 would be good). This goes against all SDN rhetoric, but skipping out on your letter is not going to hold you back from getting in to medical school. If I were in your situation, I wouldn't think twice about skipping out. Imagine if you DO wait it out and they end up giving you a luke warm or just okay recommendation. 👎

I think this may be it, or you've been following unsuccessful teams. I feel like people get discouraged from certain sports when their home team typically performs poorly.

I watch football religiously, but I definitely think that going to games is 100X better than watching them.

I think skipping your committee letter raises red flag if you do have the option get one, I'm in a tough position but I might just stick it out

How much of a red flag, I'm not so sure. I'd personally go with a well prepared, early application with 5 solid recs versus a well prepared, but late application, with an average committee letter. Perhaps you apply with single rec's and then submit the committee rec when its available?

I can see how football can be boring, but baseball is just as boring if not more boring. 😛
