MD & DO Co’22 ERAS Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Advice for interview season: I found that I peaked in December. November interviews I was warming up. January interviews I was burning out.

Good thing my home institution is interviewing me in October then 😑

1. Do yourself a favor and stop looking at the spreadsheets. Go do something relaxing instead lol
2. Just because >50% of programs have sent out interviews doesn't mean all the interviews are gone. They literally got our apps only a little over a week ago.
Lurking M3 here but isn’t this a panic thread?

I'll try, but with this process it's so hard to not freak out. I've heard some programs have filled out all their dates on the first or second waves of invites. Like are they going to open up more dates or is this really it for these programs? And if this is it, should I just panic and start sending LOIs everywhere before all spots run out. At the same time, I

Don’t worry, this won’t stop the panic. We all good.

If im doing a subI at a place later in the year when should I be reaching out about asking for an interview?

Not a word from any of the IM programs that I “signaled”

My home program does courtesy interviews and they haven’t sent me one, though, so I don’t think it’s time to worry yet
I'm 2/5 on signals, with the other 3 programs still not sending out any interviews according to the spreadsheet. I think it's still really early in the grand scheme of things.

Y’all ready for Black Monday? Thinkin I may just rest up this weekend, especially my fingers in case the floodgates open up. I need them to be ready to go
Is this supposed to be across many specialties (including IM and Anesthesia) or just radiology?

Had my 1st interview with a program I really just intended on using as a warm up interview but they completely blew me away. And only $800/month for a new 2 bedroom apartment! 😱😱

Regarding regionality of interviews…

2 interviews for IM (backup) in my home state
1 IM and 2 TY interviews in my med school state… two of them within a 15 minute drive of my school
1 IR interview at a place I auditioned

Mine are more than regional. Mine are I lived/worked in their part of the specific state. But programs can’t just interview people with close local ties forever. Eventually they’re going to have to open up further.

Agree I’ve been getting only regional places. I bet they prob doing that a lot more this year as a way to sort through so much apps.

Public Service Announcements:

Do not put your name in your application in ALL CAPS, thinking that will somehow make you stand out. It does, but not in a good way.

"Honors" on your clerkships is not an award, and should not be listed in the Awards section of your application.

"Reading medical journals" or "Medical Education" do not belong in the Hobbies/Interests section. Unless you live a very boring life.

"Oral Presentations" do not include required presentations on your clerkships. You should only list "invited" presentations or those that were picked from some competitive process. (To be fair, the ERAS app isn't clear about this).

... and now back to your regular scheduled panic programming.

Whew, glad I didn’t listen to my buddy and list honored rotations under awards.

Also, I listed a oral presentation for a national society that I have been invited to do, but am not actually doing for another month or so. Do you think that will be an issue?

Too late now

Is being given interviews by a program early matter at all? Like if program X has 3 waves does the people who get interviews wave 1 the ones they like the most?

No, the only thing that matters is where you are ranked by the program, and also where you rank the program.

I've heard from some people that the interview doesn't even matter that much from the program's perspective? Like, that some programs have a preliminary rank list before interviews and will only adjust if you're straight up awful or somehow exceptional. Kinda like the PS. Not sure how true this is?

I imagine its somewhat true. Your LORs, application, and grades/scores probably say a lot about what a program is looking for, and the interview is probably just to confirm what they already know about you.

I interviewed at a few programs who actually told us how they rank applicants. They score them and the interview is what moved them up or down.

Was talking to a PD and the way they do it is 100% objective for a small part, and then the bigger part is what the residents think after lots of interaction with the applicant. The faculty have actually totally removed themselves from having input, which I thought was a really odd thing, but I guess you will be spending the most time with the other residents so it makes sense.

Just much higher stress during the social/Sub-I/whatever.

I'm sure most people don't do anything like that, but I thought it was interesting.

No, the only thing that matters is where you are ranked by the program, and also where you rank the program.
So we could be interviewing at places where our chances of matching are pretty low based on those objective measures?? I always thought it was kinda like since you got the interview you passed the screening and you are in equal footing with everyone else and it’s up to your interview performance.

You're asking an impossible question, because not all programs will work the same way. In some fields/programs, all of the interview candidates will be stellar on paper. Is a step score of 270 really better than 260? Not in any practical way. If all of the interview candidates are of a similar academic caliber, then interview performance might be weighted higher. Some programs might decide to maximize "fit" and worry less about academic performance.

Yet others will weigh academic performance more, use that as an initial ranking score, then allow the interview to move you up or down. In that case, the amount of down movement is unlimited (i.e. a poor enough interview performance would remove you from the list completely), but the amount of upward movement is probably limited. Someone who academically is in the 4th quartile of the interview list isn't likely to be moved to the 1st quartile of the list because of their interview.

That said, there is no standard and anything is possible. This is all unknowable, so at this point isn't worth panicking over. Do as well as you can on your interviews, rank programs in the order you want to attend.

Public service announcement:

If your name is Joe Smith, and has always been Joe smith, then don't put your preferred name as "Joe" and your prevous last name as "Smith". These answers are for people who like to be called something different than their official first name, and those whom have had their last name changed.

.. back to usual panic

This is just me being paranoid, but what constitutes poor interview performance? And how often is someone not ranked period?

Like ultimately I'm just sort of a boring guy. I feel like I won't be able to compete with like a world-traveler whose snowboarded on 3 continents.

And when it comes to ranking and matching its kind of opaque. So long as I rank a lot of places, and they at least rank me, I will probably match - right?

Any idea about international flying during interview season. Need to fly to another country for an emergency but would hate to miss a big invite while flying.

Interview season got me wanting to shoot my shot when I can!

For DOs im hearing from people from last year with super competitive apps most academic IM interviews dont come until later but they will come. Im 0 interviews rn and its whatever I know ill get academic interviews im just trying to forget about it all for now

Just got a supplemental from UNC IM PSTP. Didnt even apply to their PSTP track lol is this odd? Im super confused
+1. I'm choosing to be optimistic and assume that they just accidentally sent the supplemental app email to everyone they meant to send in interview invite to.

If im doing a subI at a place later in the year when should I be reaching out about asking for an interview?
There's no perfect answer. If you're certain the program knows you'll be there, then you probably don't need to reach out at all. If the SubI was arranged via a medical school (i.e. VSAS), then the program might not know about you at all. In that case, might be worth reaching out now -- but don't "ask for an interview". Just tell them you're excited to have the opportunity to complete a SubI at their institution and include the dates.

Well, just missed an interview for the first time. This is such crap, honestly. The link looked funny on my phone, as in I wasn't sure if it was legit, so I took the time to open my computer, which took about 1 minute and 30 seconds... and all of the interviews were gone by then.

And just in case you don't know, because I didn't, interviews from HCA (for TYs at least) come from a website called 3rdfriday. That's why I decided to look a little closer before I opened the link.

So, tl;dr - 3rdfriday really is an interview scheduler, even though I've never heard of it before. It's not spam.

I hate everything right now.

Edit: is this just me? Am I literally the only person on the planet that didn't know about 3rdfriday and thought that the only main schedulers were ERAS and thalamus?
