Hi, I was wondering if any1 could list out the competitiveness (if thats a word or how you spell it) of various internal med residencies. I think that I want to be either an internist or surgeon, so yeah if any1 could rank the competion for just IM specialities, that would be great.

Also, is general inernal medicine one of those fields that not everyone will get into that wants to (ie derm, opthal), or does just about everyone that wants to get in, unless your really "bad", so to speak.

hey, aren't you that high school kid who trolls into all the forums (dental, medicine, surgery, etc) asking about how much money each field makes and how you want to go into that field for the moment (as you're typing)? i thought you wanted to be a dentist for sure or was it a pharmacist? no i think it was a vet. you should just go to college first, figure out what you like or are good at and then look at the money issues. you're going backwards, hun.

Hi, I'm very interested in learning about the brain, so I thought that neurology would be the thing for me. But after talking to a few people, they said that:
1. just because you like learning about the brain, it doesn't mean you'll like neurology.
2. to go into something else because neuro doesn't make as much money as others.

If neuro isn't for people who like brains, then what is?! And also, do neurologists earn enough money to buy a big house and Mercedes E-Class (about 50k)? I know it's dumb but I'm a materialistic person, and since I will spend X money on med school, I want to make sure that the job I do will pay off given the hardwork and money I'll put in.

Any help is appreciated. THANKS!!

Alright, I am pretty sure that I want to do dent over med school (don't comment on my sn, it's old). But I wanted to know what type of dentist or specialist earns the most money on average. I know region makes a difference, so lets say that I live in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, or some other Mid-Atlantic/Southern state.

Enlighten me dent students....I am not worthy!

Hi, I am actually a high school student that is very interested in doing either GI, Cardiology, or oncology. My parents however believe that because I'll probably wind up getting a 3.7 gpa (assuming worst case scenario since I'm a junior now) in high school that I should give up internal medicine since there is a lot of competition for not only med school, but also to try and get a residency in those fields. Is this true and should I stop trying and focus on something else, or is it still reasonable for me to try? I do have the desire to go through all the training; that's a non-issue, but I'm just wondering if I should stop and move on because it's unrealistic. Thanks for any help that you can give, especially since I know that this is strange! I'm only asking you guys because you have all been through the system whereas they haven't.

Is the DAT harder than the MCAT?

Also, is dentistry seriously harder than medicine? The reasons people cite for this to be true are:

1. The DAT is harder than the MCAT (any truth to this?)
2. There are fewer spots for rescidencies.
3. Its harder to "break into" the profession in terms of getting a job

any truth to any of this, especially the MCAT thing because that and the DAT are the things that I'm most concerned about right now

What is a site where I can find official pharmacy school rankings?

Also what type of pharmacists own the most (without holding an executive position) and how much do they make?

I'm wondering if vets are as "poor" so to speak as people say they are. As in, do they really earn less than 150k cuz a surgeon or something can still get sued and stuff, so doesn't their job demand that they earn more to compensate for this and the pressures just like a doctor?

I wanted to start a new forum for those who have interest in Oral & Maxillofacial surgery here! Anyone with anything interesting to share relating to the practice of or residency training please post your message here!

Just wondering what are the salaries of all the major IM specialities ie derm, cards, GI, Pul, and hem/onc. I'd especially like to know the salaries of Pul and hem/onc if you don't have time for all of them. Thanks in advance!! (btw please post the actual url and don't just say visit the nike website or something)

Look here, a 3.7 GPA in high school is not going to eliminate the option of medical school (or dental, or pharmacy, or vet, or aerospace engineering). Go to college first and then you can try to figure this all out.

Nice work, Gwen.

look, i don't hate people who want to earn lots...that's fine, that's normal, that's human. but the kid doesn't even know what he/she wants to do in life - except earn enough to get a mercedes E-class. she just needs to go to college, figure out what she's good at and then earn lots in that field. and no, i wasn't trolling through all those forums...his/her one or two posts sounded fishy so i checked on the last few posts and voila.

Good job Gwen. We should make you a honorary SDN police officer! 🙂

I think it's pwned. 😛

so you guys think I'm a troll? How can you say that I have no focus in life? From my posts isnt it obvious that I want to do something in medicine? Its not like I fu.cking asked about malpractice law in a ****ing dental forum. You might think you're really funny (btw only losers use pwned), but seriously, think about how sad it is that your basically making fun of a high school kid that admittedly has low self-esteem and is concerned about his future. The only reason I post here is to get answers from people who know more about this sh.it because I have a lot of questions and unlike most people who have parents that are doctors, I cant get them answered by my aprents. So what do you want me to do? If I have questions, then I'll post questions. And also, I know that if anyone else posts here, the next 20 posts are gonna quote this and say what an dingus I am, but **** that because I'm not the one being an dingus. I'm not the one making fun of a person who has no knowledge about something and then is getting his a.ss kicked for no fu.cking reason. BTW if you're all so fu.cking pissed at me for changing my mind about a career, if you're american, you have no fu.cking right to talk. You Americans change your mind more in college than most people (which isnt a bad thing like you guys make it out to be). So please people, I already failed my fu.cking license test today on my fu.cking birthday today, and for a birth day I must say this is one of the worst days of my life. If you want to answer my question, then please do so. If you want to bit.ch about what an a.sshole I am, please start a new thread!

Edit: I was going to continue the pile-on, but then came another post.

internist: it is WAY to early to get worked up about this kind of stuff. you'll go insane if you think about this sort of thing this early. if you really want to be a doctor, finish high school strong and do well in college, then think about applying to medical school. if you are accepted, you will have 4 years to experience all areas of medicine and decide which one you like. if you want a 50k car that's fine you'll probably be able to afford it anywhere in medicine, as long as you are willing to sacrifice whatever else you could have spent the money on (retirement, vacations, house, etc)

also, you will make good money in any healthcare specialty, but please don't do it for that. if you want nice stuff, first find something you enjoy. you can make money virtually anywhere in life if you have the drive and a little bit of business sense.

and by the way, we were probably all in your shoes at one point. the difference back then was i didnt have the internet.

there's a study in JAMA correlating the failure of the driver's license test with passing the USMLE and the data is not good for you my friend.

there's a part in the medical school application section asking how many times you took your driver license test because schools have knowledge of this study and helps them decide which person is gonna pass the damn USMLE.

Sorry for the bad news!!

The article is in Jama of February 16, 2005 page 203-207. You can get a copy of JAMA at any medical or health related library.

thats a lot of expletives and f-bombs...

would you hazard a few guesses as to what personality traits are valued in physicians? hmmm... equanimity under pressure? intelligence? courtesy? to name a few?

you seriously need a time-out.

ok look I understand that I should be booted for what I've done since I've sworn more than tupac shakur (RIP), fine. But before I do, I want to apologize. Today is my birthday, and I failed my driver's license test. And I got really really really pissed that when I come to a forum looking forward to see answers to my questions, I instead find people ridiculing me for asking questions. Seriously, what do you want me to do?!! If I say honestly that I'm a high schooler, then people scoff at me. So I have to show that I have some interest in that field or else people will just laugh at me like you guys did. So yes, I know that I should and will get kicked, but yeah I hope this explains some of the story. If you dont believe me, you can look on some of my internal medicine post where I sorta addressed this.

So, talk to u guys later....maybe. Actually no I wont lol

btw: Am I seriously going to be referred to on future salary posts as the *** who wants a mercedes E-Class?! Cuz I'd rather be remembered as a guy with an anger problem than that!

Ehhh...probably a little from column A, and a little from column B.

People wiser than I on this forum are giving you good advice...it behooves you to take it. Of course, like all good advice, it only makes sense in retrospect.

First, like Frankie said, RELAX (...am I dating myself?). You're in high school, and while I know parents/friends/friends' parents and society in general these days can put a lot of pressure on kids, it's not healthy to be so goal-oriented so early in life, if only because your goals aren't really based on your own wants/needs. While you are stressing about med school or whatever you end up gunning for, life will pass you by. Not trying to sound condescending or cheesy here, but I think each and every person in med school/residency deep down feels like they missed out on a lot during their training, and just hate to see it happen to other people (especially if they aren't even sure they want to be doctors!).

College comes first, and if I could go back, I know for sure I wouldn't have stressed out about half the stuff I stressed about back then. I'm not saying you shouldn't have goals, I'm just saying you are waaaay too intent right now on deciding a life path when you should be just finding out about yourself.

Sorry you had such a crappy birthday...it happens to the best of 'em. At least you still look forward to your birthdays - a sure sign you're still young!

well, in a serious note as they told you earlier in this post, dont think about what you are gonna do after medical school. Just study hard and get into a good college and remember to study hard in college so you have a GPA > 3.45 so you have a good chance to get into medical school combine with your MCAT.

Thats all you need to worry about right now.

Today is my birthday, and I failed my driver's license test.

btw: Am I seriously going to be referred to on future salary posts as the *** who wants a mercedes E-Class?! Cuz I'd rather be remembered as a guy with an anger problem than that!

I'm sorry to hear about your driving test, but you can try again and you'll get it soon enough. But I think this is a good example of putting the cart before the horse--get the driver's license first, then worry about the mercedes E-class. It's the same thing with your posts: you're doing obsessing about residency and salary before college and figuring out what makes you *happy* aside from money.

If money is your main concern rather than a true passion for medicine (dent/vet/pharmacy/etc), really, consider investment banking or other finance jobs. You'll make a lot more money a lot faster.

It also sounds like your parents are a little high strung....your high school grades have absolutely no impact on getting into medical school, nevermind a specialty. They only affect going to college, so focus on getting into a good college, and once you are there take advantage of the opportunity to really see what you're interested in, and who you really are as a person. Relax, it'll work out, and spazzing over it now isn't going to make it happen any faster.

Let me be the first to raise my hand in favor of NOT banning the OP. You cant pay for entertainment this good. Keep it coming big guy. And to quote your favorite lyricist "Tupac Shakur (RIP)"...."Keep ya head up".

I agree. This is hilarious!! In the words of Garth from Wayne's World, the OP should "Live in the now!".

honestly i think whatever your motivation is, whether its cash, chicks or fame.. if youre gonna turn out to be a great doctor at the end of the day, who gives a **** really. plenty of private practice docs that charge ridiculously are also great in their fields. u dont have to be a socialist to wanna do medicine. so whatever floats your boat man. if it drives to do have great ambition and in turn contribute to society, i hardly see any fault with it.

another thing id like to point out thru past experience is, when youre 16 etc, your motivations for choosing careers might be very different from what you'd have in mind when youre 25. you cant see the difference youre making as a doctor, how people expect so much of you and how you can make differences that matter. u only see the benz and your $200 tie. its unlikely to expect u to see more than that at your age. maybe the other posters forgot how its like to only hv your level of exposure.

oh and medicine can be a 'boys-club' so to speak. some of us hate it when other people talk only about money money money. it cheapens what we do u see.

oh and its extremely premature to decide on a speciality choice at this age. i remember i wanted to do anesthesia before med school cause my uncle was one, and orthopaedics in 1st med cause dislocating the hip during anatomy was fun, but in good time and exposure, decidign between internal medicine and surgery will mean a heck of a lot more than just $$$...

so work fcking hard a whatever u do and whatever your motivation is. hopefully you'll be of benefit to society in the future.

Yeah....I recommend doing medicine for the hot nurses (See Below).

okay, kid (internist88) -

your reaction to these posts tells me one thing. you really are 16. you shouldn't be worrying about a mercedes E-class, you should be thinking about how to get your driver's license. don't worry, most people have to take the test a few times, so you're not alone (although, i did pass it the first time). secondly, birthdays are no big deal, they come and go. you'll realize that once you hit 22. i guess they do feel special when you're so young, awww, another thing that tells me about your maturity. happy birthday.

secondly, your reaction tells me you are so not ready for a combined BS/MD program. if you can't handle failing a silly driving test AND getting shown up at an anoymous internet forum (sheesh), man, you better get ready for the big boys. you'd be CRUSHED as a surgery student then. are you going to run around the hospital flailing your arms when your surgery resident puts you down? no, you suck it up and learn to work harder.

and don't give me any bs about not having doctors as parents. most people don't. i didn't - i am the first doc in the family from both sides. as most people on this forum have said, its not about the questions you ask, its about their quality - they suck. you can look that stuff up anywhere. don't make premature comments about how you want to be in this field or that, you can just say that you're looking into your options instead of sounding like the materialistic 16 year old (non??) american that you are. hey, you used every single one of those words, not me.

oh, one more thing, its interesting how you put down americans. how do you think this country rose to the top? by "undecided" college majors? no, it rose from hard work of all americans (whether they had been here for centuries or just immigrated). i find immigrants with no loyalty to this country to be big backstabbers. they bite the hand that feeds them. i have a feeling your parents are putting craploads of pressure on you to succeed(you're probably asian? i am too, i'm desi). they want you to make crap loads of money that they probably couldn't and are putting down americans, labeling them as lazy. and now you're searching internet forums asking about salaries and putting down your own country. nice.

again, considering you're 16, i apologize if i somehow traumatized you. just enjoy your childhood and worry about making money when you get into college. its cool that you're worried about being at the top of the money ladder, but just get your license first. and don't put down your fellow american, that's really not cool.

With an outburst like that, there's no way he's Asian. He's got a be a middle-class white guy with the type of parents that live vicariously through their children---the type who couldn't accomplish anything themselves, so they parade their children around and say, "See what a great person I am. My son is a success!"

oh, i've seen plenty of indian parents act the same way. they are middle class families who come to this country and basically force their kids to accomplish what they couldn't - just so that they can brag at parties. the pressure is really heavy on these kids. i'm not generalizing - i'm lucky enough not to have a dad like that, my mother definitely fits that category though (not the pressure part, just the random bragging part). hahha, so white people do the same thing, huh? i guess we're not that different after all.

so you really have to know what you want out of life with parents who are forcing you to decide at such a young age. it was so sad to see people drop out of my program (mostly really smart indian kids) who basically did their best to "fail" in college to try and get out of the bs/md program because they were more interested in the arts or whatever. a commitment to a bs/md program or just medicine in general takes a lot of maturity and of course, motivation (be it money or whatever floats your boat).

I dont really think this has anything to do with being Asian or White.

Being a douchebag is colorblind.

I was referring more to the outburst than the overzealous parents.

at least you don't have to worry about that e class mercedes or whatever your concern was without a license. maybe you should just skip a job in healthcare altogether and go into business and then you could get a driver and a fleet of oh so nice cars and not worry about that whole which makes the most dental/medicine/pharm/vet or the license. then again maybe anger management is more up your alley.

so you guys think I'm a troll? How can you say that I have no focus in life? ... My free advice:

1. Myelinate your frontal lobe before you make any life-changing decisions
2. Enjoy high school: play some sports, get a girlfriend, set things on fire, or whatever you guys like to do these days.
3. Relax!!!

Seriously, what you need to do right now is work on good grades and get into a decent college. This isn't the best forum to ask about that, since most of us graduated at least 4 years ago.

You might think about why you want to go into a health-related career-- do you enjoy volunteering? Do you feel that you want a career that unites science and humanities? Do you like blood and guts? What other careers have you considered? (If it's the money, I don't recommend this line of work.)

When you go to college, attend the pre-med, pre-dental, pre-vet, or other meetings that sound good in your first year. THEN you can start asking around in these forums about the specifics.

(Good luck on that driving test... I failed my 1st one too.)

Ditto.

To the OP:
Listen up, you will be absolutely 100% miserable if you go into medicine for the money. Just do not do it. If you think that life is in any way stressful, hard to swallow or cruel right now, you will find it a million times worse if you enter this field for the money. Start with general studies in college and see where that takes you. Please, don't enter the medical field just for the money. It gives the rest of us a bad name.
