for all those los angelenos or those who went to interview COMP/WESTERN:

so i've heard that pomona isnt exactly never-neverland and it may not be the prettiest of towns, but as long as there are nicer towns around it, i think i can manage..

my main quetion is, how far is pomona and the towns in its 15 minute radius from all of the good stuff in LA? i mapquested pomona, like the geography buff that i am, and it seemed kind of nestled in the corner valley of los angeles, but then checked the map's scale and since LA is so spread out, the map was quite deceiving. in actuality, westernu seems pretty freakin' far relative to LA and its high publicized areas of hollywood, beverly hills, the beach, etc (stuff that u would do on a night out on the town/daytime trip shopping/going to the beach)

does it honestly take about 1 hr to get out to what LA has to offer? and if so, is there other stuff to do in nearby orange county or in the inland empire itself?

You will be in medical school, and won't be having all the "nights on the town" that you think. Trust me.

I am a fourth year at WesternU/COMP. I like the location. Yeah, Pomona sort of sucks, but the hole in the wall mexican food restaurants aren't too bad. 😀

I think the location is good in that you can live in Chino Hills, or Claremont, which are both about 10 minutes from school, and there is plenty around to do when you have time. LA is about an hour away and that isn't too bad if a group gets together to go out on a weekend, which doesn't happen every weekend, or even every month sometimes. The beach is about an hour away too, so its close enough to head down on a weekend, but not so close that you are going to be distracted and head down instead of going to class....although.....GUILTY!

I think you'll like the location once you get used to it.....when I want to do something different, I usually head over to Pasadena(45 min) or Orange County(30-45min). When I want to head to the beach I usually go to Huntington Beach, about 1.2 hrs away, but you end up spending the day there. Cities around Pomona which are relatively nice are Chino Hills, Claremont, Rancho Cucamonga. Claremont is a college town and thus there is plenty of the associated activities.

Bottom line....if you have a list of pros and cons with respect to Western/COMP, you should put location in the "pro" side.

I think you just need to realize that Southern California is difficult to get around in general, and it has nothing to do with distance. It has everything to do with traffic. Los Angeles is less than 30 miles from Pomona, but it's going to take you an hour to get there through traffic. But that's going to happen where ever you live in southern Cali. The only way to have a short trip is live exactly where ever it is you want to go. Obviously most people don't want to commute to school for one hour (although I hear it's done), so they'll live closer to campus and save their "outings" for when they have more time. Just keep things in perspective with Southern California. Frankly, I love the fact that I'm only an hour from just about anything. You can't say that about alot of places.

Actually, if you're talking about nightlife... and it's at night that you're driving, I could do 30miles in under 30 minutes easily. Especially if you're going with a group, the carpool lane is even faster and traffic is not much of a factor. Besides, not all the clubs are in one area. There are plenty of fun places closer to campus, like in Pasadena.

If you're talking about beaches, then you'd probably be driving on weekends and the traffic is not a factor unless if there's an accident.

Actually, it doesn't matter where you're going, I hope it's on the weekends and in that case, traffic should not be a factor.

the 2 most important parts of living in SoCal: car and patience (a very close 3rd is plastic surgery and ego). And if it rains.......good luck getting anywhere. People here have absolutely, positively no idea how to drive in the rain. to top it off, gas has consistently been around $2.50/gallon over the last 5 years. Enjoy your stay....KC her I come. Just kidding. Once you get used to Cali, there's nowhere better!!!!!

pomona isnt LA. LA takes about an hour from there from my experience...and the real "LA" as I have come to know it around the westside...is much different from pomona or its surroundings...long live the westside.
