Cornell Class of 2014!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
as for roommate searches... my parents and i are investing in a condo up there (it's being inspected today!), but it's a 1 BR so no roommates for me (uhh, unless the boy comes with me)... but i will have you all over for dinner! 😉

Yay! looks like i'll have to take you up on that offer 😀. I wouldn't worry too much about the roommate situation, soon enough we'll be bombarded with emails from people looking for roommates, amongst other things. It'll all work out in the end.

absvet:

was that email sent to everyone in the class? i sent my deposit when acceptances went out...and i havent got that email yet.
did any one else get it? i wanna be on the listserve to find potential roommates!! 🙂

Yea I think so - did you get confirmation about your deposit? I would email Jennifer Mailey. I have already gotten lots of emails looking for roommates!

oh i just recieved some emails from the listserv...thanks!

did anyone else get their financial aid decision today?? i was pleasantly surprised by mine!! now i'm definitely glad i decided on cornell over penn (where I'm OOS 😱 ). i was also added to the listserv today, so general cornell excitement all around!! 😀

got my financial aid package as well, pleasantly surprised!! now its time to find roommates and furniture.

I got my fin package as well and I was really happy about it. I also got added to the listserv today so whooo! 🙂 Once I find an apartment I can relax before August. 😀

Did you guys get your Fin Aid packets in the mail? I didn't get one yet...do I need to send in my deposit first? Or maybe it's delayed because I just finished my Fin Aid paperwork last week...whoops!

It's sent via email at first. You don't need to submit your deposit before receiving it because some people need this to make a decision. It's probably because you submitted you paperwork late lol

Thanks mereafterthough. I figured as much...I knew my procrastination would catch up to me at some point!

It's looking more and more like I will be a part of the fabulous Cornell class of 2014! So excited!

Awesome! Yay!! 🙂)

Just got mine today...pretty disappointing. Womp womp. I don't think it'll play too big a part in my decision though...

I'm finally going to Ithaca this weekend to look for an apartment! It's exciting because it finally feels real. So far I potentially have 7 or 8 appointment to look at places. That seems like so many! 😱 I'm looking into places with upperclassmen who need roommates, and also empty places that I could share with other first years. I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what I want to do (and exactly how much I can afford, hah!), but I guess I'll have a better idea once I see these places. Is anyone else freaking out about housing like I am?

oh gosh yes. I've been freaking out since I got in. I've completely given up on the idea of living alone because it's way too expensive and I'm afraid I'll get lonely. I really want to live with an upperclassman (at least during the first year) so I can ask them for advice, which will be extremely helpful. Good luck finding an apartment! 🙂

Maybe Cornell has already told us and I just haven't been paying attention (very possible).... but does anyone know what we're supposed to do about getting the rabies vaccine series?

I was told by an upper classman that there's a clinic provided for us during orientation that lets us get our titers checked (if we've gotten it before) or get the vaccine itself. I'm not sure if this clinic is paid for from our tuition...imma ask a current first year and get back to you.

Awesome thanks!! Also your other thread about stethoscopes got me totally excited and now I'm shopping for one online.

lol yeah I'm stoked about my stethoscope too! 🙂 Here's the response I got from a current student there:

"If you can get it with your own health insurance do it now. It costs a TON if you do it with Cornell, and because Gannett was considered out of network I couldn't get mine covered by my insurance. If you can get it for less than $600 do it now! If you already have it, they check your titers, and I don't know how much that costs. If you do get it before coming, just make sure to bring proof that you have them."

So I guess getting it before cornell is our best bet...

I guess that's just one more reason to make a doctor's appointment asap. Sometimes it feels like August is sooooo far away, and yet the time is really going to fly by! I better get on that rabies thing before I forget.

I never even thought of looking for a stethoscope now. Have you guys heard of which brands are the best? 🙄 Or maybe not THE best, because I probably couldn't afford the very best. But maybe like a pretty good one? 😳

The best from what I heard from the vets at my job is the Littmann Cardiology III it cost anywhere from $150-$200 but I heard it's worth it.

So I just got back from apartment hunting in Ithaca, and I'm probably more confused about housing than I was before I went. Somehow it seems like it really shouldn't be this hard. Either I'm just way too indecisive, or nothing was that great and I should go back for round 2. 🙁

I COMPLETELY understand. I've never had this big of a problem finding housing even when I was an undergrad there. I think the problem is that all of the good, cheap apartments are sold. I'm getting more and more anxious as time passes and I don't find an apartment. However, it'll all work out in the end. Maybe a second round wouldn't be too bad. I'm going back for my second round in May.

I'm going back for my second round in May.

😱 I don't know why, but I feel like I have to go back, like, tomorrow. Ok, so maybe not that soon. But I'm actually considering going back 2 weekends from now. It's only 3.5 hours for me, so I guess that's not too insane. But really, am I crazy for having this (irrational?) fear that if I don't sign a lease as soon as possible I'll end up in some crappy shoebox of an apartment with a roommate who talks to themselves in Klingon?

This weekend I looked at 2 places with roommates...one with awesome girls who I think I'd get along with, but the downside is it's 20 minutes away (probably 30 or more in bad weather) and I'm not sure how well my Civic would handle on the windy roads in the winter. The other one was close to school and gorgeous, but, uh...I'm not so sure about the roommates. I also found a couple empty places that looked promising (even though I always choose aesthetics over lower price...clearly I need to start prioritizing more like a vet student and less like someone who makes 40K a year), but I don't have anyone to live with so I'd have to find some roomies. Yeah...confused. I guess my fantasy of finding the perfect place and signing a lease this weekend was a bit of a stretch?

No not at all. Honestly, this whole apartment hunting thing is stressing me out as much as the application process did....well maybe not THAT much but pretty damn close. If you want to consider me as a roomate please PM me. I'd be willing to brave the 3.5 trip with you and get this stupid apartment hunting nightmare overwith. I was at first skeptical about living with a first year but now I don't care anymore lol.

hey first years! you probably got my email to the listserv, but i need two roommates for the fall. the rooms are about 10x8 and 10x11, located two miles from the vet school in a beautiful area. if youre interested PM me! thanks 🙂

Just got an email saying orientation is August 16th-17th and classes start the 18th! This is becoming so real! I'm both excited and scared out of my damn mind. How are you guys doing? What have you done/bought to prepare so far?

I know! Crazy! My major preparation has been signing a lease - so glad to get that over with! And finishing my pre-reqs on Wednesday - whoo-hoo! Mostly I'm planning how I'm going to avoid doing any work at my job and have tons of fun this summer.

I'm starting to plan this part now. Once stupid physics is done I need to make a detailed plan about how I'm going to do absolutely nothing and have fun. I'm actually leaving my job a month early to de-stress, it'll hurt financially but mentally I freakin need it. 😀

I was wondering if anyone knew where or how easy it would be to get into horseback riding in Ithaca without my own horse or tons of money. I used to be really into horseback riding (english equitation, hunter/jumpers) and was involved in smaller shows, but haven't been able to since my horse died unexpectedly 2 years ago and I moved to the city. I am dying to get back into it when I move out to the country again, but I don't know where to start! Let me know if you have any ideas!

I have an idea! Make an awesome friend who has an awesome horse (pictured) that she is bringing to Ithaca but is afraid she might not have time to ride every day! PM me if you'd like (orrrrr I think you may have my e-mail? i can't remember. if so that's better!) 🙂

I'm right there with you, absvet (and I know we've already chatted, TBH 🙂). I'm excited to explore riding opportunities in the Ithaca area (particular hunter/jumper/eq). My idea: let's combine forces once we're in Ithaca and get riding! As a side note...my host mentioned that many (overzealous?) Cornell undergrads bring their horses to school, find that they don't have enough time to work them amongst academic and other various time commitments, and put out feelers looking for people (aka US!) to keep their horses in shape.
