Cornell Class of 2014!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm a current grad student at Cornell and know from personal and friends' experiences that there is a huge variety in places to live and what they cost.
The parking permit was around $680 this year- VERY expensive. Since I'm currently getting a stipend it wasn't that big of a deal, but next year I probably won't be getting one. You get a "new to cornell" bus pass that is free your first year here (it's automatically activated to your student ID), so that is a viable option, but be sure to ask landlords/roommates if your place is close to a bus stop- it gets cold walking around here!
My first year here I rented a place without even coming to look at it, it was a one bedroom that was about a 12 min drive and was about $750 with everything included.
This year I looked around a LOT and found a great place downtown that is $470 with everything included, but I have a roommate (a good friend).
I would recommend looking on craigslist.. last year there were several postings for places near the vet school that used phrases like "great for vet students" hahaha 🙂

I'm attending the Feb 5/6 one too! Ithaca is a pretty cool place, from what I saw (I was up there a few times during an internship). It just seems like a down to earth college town with some pretty parks and falls. Maybe i'll enjoy it after years of being in a big city, guess ill find out. Cant wait to meet everyone!

I'll be there then too! I'm looking forward to meeting you all. 🙄

Lol yeah I saw that last week. I'm a CU alum so when I told my fellow alum about this she freaked! lol Thankfully I'm not a big fan so I won't be breaking my neck to spend this summer there lol

I'll be there then too! I'm looking forward to meeting you all. 🙄

Me too! My student host has emailed me and I'm really excited to go! Especially now that all this financial aid nonsense is finished.

Have any of you written the statement of personal interest for scholarships? If so how long was it and how was it formatted? This "essay" just seems arbitrary to me and I feel like I'm going to ramble on about nothing in the hopes of getting some sort of scholarship.

For those of you who went to the informational session this weekend, how was it?

For those of you who went to the informational session this weekend, how was it?

It was great!! I had a lot of fun. All of my concerns about PBL were addressed and I now feel much better about it - they had us do mock sessions together (facilitated by faculty and current student) so we could get a feel for how it works.

Yesterday was a lot of being talked at, but I didn't find myself bored at any point. It was nice getting to see some of the faculty present on their research to get a scope for the kind of work that goes on there. I especially enjoyed getting to have lunch in small groups with faculty in our own areas of interest. Everyone seemed incredibly nice and sincerely interested in having us at Cornell. I got a really, really good feeling from everyone. It was especially awesome getting to meet a few SDNers!!

(although Mereafterthought, you already know this being a Cornell alumn...) Ithaca is so much more fun than I expected it would be. I've been here several times before but never spent much time downtown. I've been staying with a close childhood friend of mine who is a DVM 4th year, and she and her husband have done a great job of "selling" Ithaca to me. Just in the past few days I've been to a lot of really great restaurants, the mall (not exciting, but nice to see what it's all about), and have even been looking around at some boarding facilities for my horse.

The moral of my story is, I've finally made a decision, and I'm coming to Cornell next year. 🙂

Hey Mereafterthough!

I'm going to the 19th and 20th session too! Hope to see you there!

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it - it feels good to know where you're going to be headed in the fall 😀

Unfortunately, I had the opposite experience at Cornell this weekend. 🙁

First, I did not feel an overall welcoming vibe from the minute that I walked in the front door (totally different from the vibe I got at Penn and Tufts).

Second, no one I met (current students, accepted students, even professors) seemed excited about being there. I asked a few people if they had decided on where they were going and a few of them said cornell but then felt that they had to follow it with 'I'm IS.'

Third, the PBL demo really turned me off. I found the professor and current student who led the small group to be extremely condescending and once again not enthusiastic about being there. Also I felt like it would be extremely frustrating to have someone 'teaching' you with the attitude of 'I know, but I won't tell you.' I understand the importance of becoming comfortable with working a case but isn't that why all (most?) vet schools have clinical rotations 3rd/4th year?

Fourth, I liked Cornell itself and Ithaca was cute but I’ve always grown up in a city and the prospect of living out there for 4 years made me extremely uneasy.

Finally, some of the people that had been accepted were extremely weird (I’m sorry I don’t mean to be offensive – there were plenty of cool/nice people too) but it made me question why they had chosen to stop interviewing candidates. Someone actually asked the question ‘Why did you stop doing interviews?’ to the academic dean.

I’m really glad that I went to check it out, but it just wasn’t for me. I’m glad to hear that some people enjoyed it. Good luck to you all in the fall!

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that nude mouse 🙁. Every school is different and if you didn't feel the vibe at Cornell, then hopefully you find the school that suits you best. I'm with turnbackhelly in that the information session basically convinced me to go there (nice meeting you by the way!). I was impressed with how integrated the curriculum was (i.e. learning about the lungs through histology, radiographs and gross anatomy all at the same time instead of in separate classes) and with PBL. The PBL method kept me engaged and I never felt the need to nod off like I do in regular lectures (although there are lectures, which are important, but I like how its mixed with PBL). I felt like I was starting to think like a vet from the beginning instead of being thrusted into that mindset as soon as clinics start. Plus, they have an aquatics department which I'm really interested in and plenty of opportunities to work in the hospital or in research which got me super excited. I didn't hate Ithaca like I thought I would...very relaxing down-to-earth town with cool people and super nice profs (one of them gave me a tour of their facilities and I'm not even in vet school yet!).

So, all in all, it looks like I'll be heading up to Ithaca next year 😀. Still waiting on Davis (which is a long shot), but even then I don't think ill go...

Woo hoo!! Can't wait to (hopefully) be classmates with "my new best friend!" 😉

nude mouse - i'm also sorry to hear that you did not have a great experience at Cornell, but as The Mad Penguin said, not every school is for everyone so it's totally cool! i actually interviewed at Tufts the day before the Cornell open house and did not have a great experience AT ALL - and I was actually expecting to really like it there. so you never know! i hope you have/will have other acceptances at schools that you feel are a better fit for you - good luck!

Woo hoo!! Can't wait to (hopefully) be classmates with "my new best friend!" 😉

Yay MadPenguin we'll be classmates! 🙂

Woo!!! This is shaping up to be an awesome class! Can't wait to meet you Mereafterthough, you sound like an awesome person. As a Cornell alum, you'll have to teach us noobs the ins and outs 😉. And don't worry turnbackhelly that "hopefully" will most definitely turn into a yes within the next week or so 😀. It was fun hanging with you and meeting all the other Cornellians, everyone was so nice and quickly dispelled the "holier-then-thou" image that people think of when they think Cornell. Hope everyone else has fun at their information session!

Aww don't make me tear up lol. I am so super excited for our class we're gonna kick major ass! I will definitely teach you all "the in's and outs". I'm new to this vet school thing as well, so even though I may know the school itself we'll be traveling this road for the first time together. But I can be direct you all to the the "happening" spots in Ithaca lol 🙂

I loved it! I am so excited and relieved - I think I would still want to go there even if it weren't my in-state and cheaper. I got a GREAT vibe there - I found it much more welcoming than Penn. The curriculum sounds so amazing. It's a little scary to do something so different than I am used to, but it sounds really interesting and challenging and a great way to learn. I wouldn't say I completely fell in love with Ithaca or the living situation there, but it definitely has it's perks over the city and I'm sure I will grow to like it, if not love it.

So - about 99% sure I am going to Cornell!

And I'm so mad I didn't get to meet any of you! Or at least didn't realize it if I did!

what did you guys do on the saturday morning? I'm hesitant to stay over a 2nd night for just two hours the next day...

And I'm so mad I didn't get to meet any of you! Or at least didn't realize it if I did!
Same here!

Honestly, I completely understand what Nude Mouse was saying. I kept wanting my potential classmates to be more excited! After talking to a bunch of first years (my host was awesome, so I got to meet a lot of people), though, I felt that everyone was really enthusiastic and happy to be there. I have to cut all of us 2014'ers some slack for being nervous, etc. I really think PBL might work better for me, and I was happy to get a mini-tour of the beautiful undergrad campus and some waterfall sightings on the way back. Pretty great!

For those of you definitely going to CU vet, what are you doing for housing arrangements? I'll be looking for an apartment the weekend of my informational session.

hey guys,

for those of you who already had the informational session, around what time did they end on friday and saturday? and how was it!? im super excited for mine on the 19th and 20th.

For those of you definitely going to CU vet, what are you doing for housing arrangements? I'll be looking for an apartment the weekend of my informational session.

Man, I didn't even think of doing some apartment hunting that weekend. I'm going to the 19th/20th session too. I figured it'd be too early to look for housing since I won't be leasing until the end of the summer. Is it even worth it to look this early?

I think I need to get a roommate. I want to be able to save some money on rent! Luckily I'm easy to live with and I like having roommates. Now I just have to find someone cool... 🙂

Oh apartment hunting...so daunting. I haven't even finished all my financial aid stuff yet! But I guess that's just apart of the million-and-one things I need to do before vet school starts, such is life 😀. I probably won't be able to get up to Ithaca to look for apartments until the summer...is that too late? I would gladly be a roommate/take on a roomie as well as long as they don't mind a cat in the apartment. I have an orange tabby named Stitch, he's a good kitty...he just eats and sleeps all day, he's a simple one.

So lucky for me I have awesome parents who are seriously considering investing in a property/condo for me to live in (mortgage in their name, but I'll essentially be the one paying it, etc.). They're actually going up to Ithaca to look at a bunch of places this Thursday - sadly I can't meet them up there (I'm in PA) because I've already missed so much school and work for interviews and CU's info session. We're shooting for a 2 bedroom because I would like to have a roommate, partially to defray expenses and partially because I think living with people is fun. 🙂 Everything's a little up in the air right now, especially because I have a close friend (pseudo-SO? no one knows...) who is a CVT and thinking about applying for a job in the ES at Cornell's VTH... so he may or may not be coming with me, he has yet to get his act together.

So I guess the bottom line of this rambly post is that I will hopefully have a place to live in Ithaca sooner rather than later (although if purchasing falls through, I'll be going up to look at apartments during my spring break in March), and pending what my friend decides to do with his life, I maaaay be looking for a roommate. If that ends up being the case this thread will likely be the first place I look! For what it's worth, I have a dog (pit/shepherd/lab/who knows mix) and 2 female cats (littermates) who will be living with me - and a horse, but he'll have a house of his own somewhere else in Ithaca. 😉

Yeah it's definitely worth looking for apartments now. All the apartments I was interested in at the beginning of this month are all sold. Property sells fast in Ithaca. Although I am laid back and easy to get along with, I would like to live alone but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm not highly opposed to having a roomate just as long as we get along. Firelily if we happen to meet up during this weekend we can discuss it further! 🙂

Oh and I have a white and tabby cat named Jacket and he's amazing! 🙂

Wow, I didn't know that would be the case! I should definitely spend some time looking around in that case. Man, I really didn't think I had to start thinking about that already.

I just want an awesome apartment and a cool roommate. Is that too much to ask? 😉

I'll definitely look for you this weekend. I never know how to find SDN people though. I wish we all wore signs to the interviews and info sessions. Although I did post a picture with me in it in the "In Memory Of" thread. So you'll know who to look for!

won't the best vet school apartments still have vet students inside? I thought it was going to be a scramble in a few months to get their rooms/apartments once they graduated. or do you just put dibs on them now and move in later?

it's possible/likely that graduating 4th years have already given notice to their landlords, etc. so even though they may still be in the apartments, landlords may have already begun to list/show them for whenever the current lease term is up.

If they make you wear a nametag for any of this stuff, just write 'SDN' really small in one corner.

I think I'm totally going to do that. Although...the admissions committees have been known to peruse SDN and some of them don't have a particularly fond opinion of it, so maybe I'll figure out some other way of being recognized. Then again I'm already admitted to Cornell so I guess it doesn't really matter in this case! 🙂 Also, I don't care if people stare at my chest. It happens all the time anyway...I better be used to it by now!

I am definitely going to be looking for a roomate too! Me (24yo female), my slightly crazy cat and guinea pig. They said after we deposit we get added to a mailing list and we are sure to get lots of emails from upper-classmen either looking for roomates or giving away their apartment.

I don't have boobs, so I didn't even consider that.

(Not a dude, just a bit more blessed in the 'junk/trunk' area and not so much in the 'rack' area.)

I would wear a big sweatshirt that says "HAI GUYS I AM TWELVETIGERS FROM SDN!" on it if I could get away with such, so a tiny little "SDN" seems perfectly fine. People are reading the nametag anyway, so it's not like it takes much extra staring to catch a "SDN."

If y'all are worried, just do a dot instead. The dot means little to anyone who hasn't been on here to know that's secret code. 🙂

I didn't meet anyone from SDN this weekend...boo! Then again, I didn't really ask around and find out if anyone was an SDNer. Apparently I get shy with that sort of thing?? But I did have a really awesome weekend! I was about 90% confident about going to Cornell going into the info session and I'm 100% confident now! 😀 It feels so good to know where I'll be next year and to be so happy about it. And to know I'll have classes with Dr. Morrissey. That guy is hilarious!

I did look around a little bit at apartments, but nothing serious. Unfortunately my friends who are 3rd years told me that the housing around Ithaca generally sucks. 🙁 I did see some places that seemed nice, though!

Yay, glad to hear Cornell roped you in too firelily 😀. They really know how to make a good argument (or sales pitch or what have you) for going there. I'm sure you'll meet all of us eventually! I know I met plenty of nice non-SDN people (oh, its possible), so it's shaping up to a great class. I almost had a slight lapse in judgment last week after hearing back from Davis and Florida, but I think I finally made up my mind and decided to just send in my depositfor Cornell. The money I save will really be beneficial in the long run and I felt like I really belonged at Cornell, it's just a great place. So I'm finally going to be apart of the Cornell c/o 2014!

They really do! The info session was great and really helped to eliminate any qualms I had about PBL and whatnot. I used to think that I'd do better with strict lecture learning and that PBL would leave me confused, but now I actually think that it'll be great! 🙂

I never got that 'wow, I belong here' kind of feeling, but I haven't really gotten that from any school. Every place I've been to has impressed me for different reasons, and Cornell certainly has a LOT of pluses! You're definitely right about the money factor. That alone is enough to make me go to Cornell, but there are many other reasons.

Now I'm just excited to get there! I'm all psyched to get an apartment and move in NOW but I have to wait. Boo! I don't think I've ever had more senioritis, and I'm not even in undergrad.

I bought one of those cling on bumper stickers and it finally felt like, "wow, this is REAL. I'm going to go to Cornell!!" Funny that it took a bumper sticker for me to really get that feeling, but that's what did it!

Apparently Mother Nature does not want me to get to Ithaca this weekend for the information session! They are supposed to get 12-18" from early Thursday AM through Friday, which will make it damn near impossible to get up there. Not to mention the predicted "Snowpocalypse" Round 4 in Philadelphia, which will make it even more impossible to get out of the Delaware Valley. I will be calling the Admissions Office first thing in the morning to see if they are canceling or will possibly offer a visit opportunity at a later date, as I expect I'm not the only one with traveling concerns. Any other SDNers in the same boat, shouting four-letter words to the sky?

On a happier note, only 26 days until spring...

yeah me too, not sure if i want to kill myself trying to get there... would be coming from way upstate northern ny

did anyone get a sort of 'program of events' anyway? i have no idea what kinds of things to expect if i do make it

Of course not, I think if they revealed the plan early on less people may attend 😀. Not to scare you off or anything, but the majority of the first day is spent sitting in a lecture hall and listening to person after person talk about possibly everything you wanted to know about Cornell and more. I definitely learned a lot, but at the same time I wouldn't have minded the day being split into two (especially since your only there for one hour on Saturday for the tour). But eh, I still enjoyed myself. So basically, on the first day youre in a lecture hall and they talk to you about the curriculum, financial aid, etc., you do a mock PBL session, and you get to have lunch with professors in your field of interest. And then, as I previously mentioned, the second day is one hour for the tour. Hopefully you guys get to make it up there, its worth it!

I know what you mean! I am suppose to fly into Ithaca tomorrow....not sure if I even want to attempt it as that means I might get stuck in the Detroit airport. I'll check the weather in the AM.... but I'm not holding my breath.

So I never posted on here before but Ive been checking in and reading what you guys have been writing... I think I finally settled in on accepting my seat at Cornell. Im a Cali girl, and have been holding off on falling for Cornell because of the OOS tuition difference versus Davis. I still have an interview at Davis in March, but I fell in LOVE with Cornell after I visited on the Feb 5/6th information session. After weeks and weeks of debating and questioning myself, I think Im going to just say "screw the money!" and go to the school I want... so anyways, long story short... Im excited to meet all of you guys soon! haha. woo hoo c/o 2014!

Hey Everyone - So I know a few of you have thrown out feelers about roommates, but I have been seriously looking at 2 bedrooms and talking to a few realtors. I have looked at some really cute and cheap houses, so if anyone might be interested, send me a PM and we can talk! About me - 24yo female, one cat, one guinea pig, fairly clean but not crazy, enjoys having people over for dinner etc. Look forward to hearing from anyone!

Also looking for a roomate for next fall. Decided to go to Cornell. I have been searching and contacting people with 2 br options with full furnishings and close to campus. Im 24 yrs old, quiet person, non-smoker and non-drinker (but dont mind people drinking as long as its not excessive), not bringing any pets, very dependable and responsible.

Anyone interested please PM me.

I sent in my deposit about two weeks ago, and I got the email today that the list host for our class is open! Yay! Let the Cornell emails begin!

Also, has anyone started a facebook group for us? Should I?

yay for the listserve! my deposit should be in within the next week or so, but i'm definitely going!

as for roommate searches... my parents and i are investing in a condo up there (it's being inspected today!), but it's a 1 BR so no roommates for me (uhh, unless the boy comes with me)... but i will have you all over for dinner! 😉

Yay listserv! I just sent in my deposit today so hopefully I will be added to the listserv soon. I still don't know what I'll be doing about housing....
