Hi SDN! I've been lurking for ages, and I haven't yet figured out the answer to my conundrum. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I was accepted to University of Colorado Denver as an OOS student and UTHSCSA as an IS student. I am extremely conflicted about this choice, which is essentially between where I want to be and where is the most cost-effective. If it helps, I am aiming to become a surgeon (most likely CT or plastics).

I love CU more for literally everything except cost - location, campus, research opportunities, reputation, connections, hospitals, etc. But the cost for OOS is seriously astronomical. UTHSCSA gave me a fantastic financial aid package, and I do love the people at the school, but it would require a 1.5 hour commute to and from Austin (where my husband works and lives). We would also have to move across the country for CU, however.

I know this may seem straightforward (you love CU, go to CU, you may say!), but the difference between the schools turns out to be 300k in debt. That is HUGE. Does anyone have any advice? My husband and I are looking for any info about how much of a leg up I would get at a better school (CU, I believe) for my future career and residency options.

THANK YOU in advance!

Edit: Just wanted to mention, I know that everyone says not to put much stock in rankings, but I got a little bit freaked out by UTHSCSA not being ranked this year at all. It was pretty strange.

As a Texas resident, I'm in a similar situation. Without considering your UTHSCSA grant, the COA for CU is approximately double that of UTHSCSA's (according to the MSAR, $82k/yr vs. $42k/yr COA). I'd get in touch with a financial aid adviser at CU who can help you go over numbers and the feasibility of paying back your loans given an estimated income. If you really like that program, make every effort to attend it: discuss both the possibility of scholarship given your situation and how you could become a CO resident. Without some sort of cost reduction, I'm not sure any school is worth that much debt.

Checked the financial aid packages yet? Any grants?
