D+ on a non science course?!

Hi everyone!
I'm a long time lurker but never posted before. I am in a bad situation right now. Due to taking multiple crazy courses at once, molecular biology, organic chemistry, and anatomy, I neglected my economics course and ended up with a real bad grade for it. It was an intro course and the professor made it 100 times harder than any normal course. It was also my fault in not caring about it.
The school that I'm applying to looks at math and science GPA mostly. However, this course is one of the required courses that I need to take before applying. How bad do you think this will hurt me in applying?

Just retake it, if your grades in the sciences are good I would think you should be ok.

Just retake it and try to get an A for econ. You still have a chance. Try not to get another D and you should be fine.

If the school requires you to take an economics course before applying, then you have to pass the course. Most schools say you have to get a C- or higher in order for pre-reqs to count, so you will probably have to retake it anyways. Check out the admissions pages of the schools you're interested in and see what their policy is on the minimum grade required for your pre-req courses.

This is what the school put.

Admission to the School of Pharmacy Pharm.D. Program is competitive and based upon the following elements:

Cumulative grade point average in the math and science prerequisites
Overall academic performance
PCAT score
Pharmacy-related experience
Recommendations
Personal statement
Interview

I also talked to the associate dean and she said that I should focus on the next semester. What do I do?

Oh, you know what I meant.🙄 That was a wording fail on my part. If you didn't get an F you technically "pass" but you have to get a C- or higher in order for them to count towards your pre-req requirements (or at least that's what it was like for all of the schools I looked at). It wouldn't make sense -- at least to me it doesn't make sense -- for you to take a pre-req class, bomb it, and then have it count anyways.

@ osg13330gg - check the website that lists which classes are required before admission and see if it says what the minimum required grade is (if any). After digging through my school's page, I found "Pre-pharmacy courses must be at least 3 semester credits, taken A-F, and completed with a grade of C- or better before enrollment." It took a bit of searching, but I found it. If your school just requires that you get above an F, then it's your call. I'd personally try to retake it when you have room in your schedule. If your school has a minimum grade requirement that's above your D+, then the choice is made for you. Good luck!!

At my school a C- minus is not considered passing. A grade of C or higher is required in order for the class to count as a prereq. C- is specifically referenced as being not accepted. Perhaps my school is the odd ball though, I don't know.

I have a friend that's doing computer science. He passed his calculus class with a D and he can still take the courses that go after that. I think a D is acceptable for the school in general. I'm looking through the school of pharmacy right now. Thanks everyone! 🙁

You can always call and ask. USC would not take anything lower than a C (meaning C- was too low) in any prerequisites. Since Econ 101 was a prereq, I'd have had to retake it. As for you, it depends on whether it's a prereq class. I had 2 Ds in Intro to Visual Arts (got a D in it twice 😳) and it didn't really affect me.

Where I go to school, you need to maintain at least a 2.0 (C) GPA in order to pass the course. A C- = 1.67 so that would be failing.

I advise you to retake it to avoid the troubles and complications when you apply for pharm schools. Just take at a community college during the winter (it's only about 6 weeks long), and econ at a cc is so much easier in case you don't want to waste your time in studying.

If it's a requirement a D is not passing. You will not be considered for acceptance.
