So...I've come to the realization that I might not be able to get into a Cali school. Which allo (out of state) schools show the most love for California applicants?

Ohio State, AECOM of YU, SLU, Drexel, Jefferson, Temple.

I hope this helps.

Advice from a fellow CA resident: (accepted at USC, waitlisted at UCLA, rejected at all other Cali schools)

I was 3 out of 3 for public schools in Texas (Houston, Dallas, San Antonio) for receiving interview invites (no love from Baylor). I went to 2 of the interviews (UTSW and Houston) and got into both.

Also offered interviews at NYMC, NYU and UIC, but didn't go to them.

Good luck!

PS--I have a 3.8, 34Q if that helps.

i hate being a cali resident. name another state where those stats won't get you into all the state school....😡

That's the truth. I often wonder how different my application cycle would have been if I lived outside Virginia.

Oregon... OHSU gave me the finger with similar stats. I even go to school and am best friends with a girl that lives next to one of my interviewers that put in a word for me... bunch of haters.

word, CA is funny as hell. No love from UCs, didn't apply to Stanford or loma linda.

Ohio state and drexel seem to like UC and/or CA applicants.

So anything else good about Cali? 😛

p.s. Gina sounds like a Korean girl name

not for asians like me striving for greatness :meanie:
or is it?

I'm going to boston for the BU MAMS program this Fall. Stats are 3.3 and 27 (retaking this June). My extracurriculars are definitely my strong point though. And I have a LOR from the dean of med. Maybe still a chance to make it to a UC? Being hopeful here.

Well to be honest, with your stats the UCs are a long shot. Get your MCAT above a 30 and you'll definately be going somewhere. Just maybe not in California.

However, definately apply and give it your best shot. The whole process is a crapshoot, and you just might do amazing on the interviews.

Believe in yourself, but do so cautiously in case the worst happens.

I just had a moment of realization here. I should've changed my thread title to:

"Damn, I'm Asian and from Cali."

Hahah...My name isn't Gina. Haven't you seen Martin? My favorite line is..."Dayyyyyyummm, Gina!!!!"

Yeah, definitely not Korean. And definitely not Gina. Sorry brah.

wow. false advertising 🙁

I just lost all interest in this thread

I think the only thing bad about California is the medical school situation. I wouldn't trade the last few years at a certain UC on the beach for any college in the country. (welllllll, maybe I would have gone to Cal)

I agree that the two southern UCs are at amazing locations. However, if you are willing to goto Cal, I can think of many other great cities with better colleges.

Yeah but not at the low in-state price! Undergrad is pretty damn cheap for us Californians.

I'll have to leave it at this or I could get into quite the argument (I am a rabid Cal alum), but making that statement, have you even been to Cal or San Francisco and actually spent time?

Yeah! Do people even know Cal is rated #1 public school in the whole country? And with tuition of under 8K a year? I really don't care for those overrated private schools ...

Is anyone applying to Loma Linda here? Or are we all afraid of the voodoo witch magic that we'll have to learn while we're there?

why would you want to go to Cal, if you're premed? Cal receives good amount of research funding and everything, but location/student body/quality of teaching are not top rated at all.

I applied last year but I decided against it. I wouldn't mind going at all - but they give heavy preference to Seventh Day adventists and other active Christians - so if you're not religious you're unlikely to get in.

How's Cal grad school?

i'm afraid.

me too. nah I actually know a guy who's probably going to loma linda this year, and he's way religious and a really nice guy. But I can say with 100% certainty loma linda is NOT the place for me

So is there no hope in Cali? I don't mind going elsewhere but it's just sad that being a Cali resident doesn't seem to count for much when it comes to going to any state school. I bet i would have a better chance of getting in if i claimed another state then applied...maybe that's even more madness, or maybe that's just crazy enough to work 😕

I beg to differ as someone who actually went there. Yes the research is very well funded, but the location is actually incredible, the campus is one of the most beautiful I've seen and access to much of what the Bay Area can offer is just public transit away. The academic quality of students there is sick (yes, they are not the super model caliber UCLA students). Finally if by quality of teaching you mean the professor holding your hand to reassure you that everything will be ok, then yeah its not a private school.

Cal's grad schools are often among the best in the United States, from social sciences to the hard sciences.

There's a reason that its the flagship campus of the UC system. Ok, I can calm down now...

The Bay Area is the nicest location in the country, which also has some of the finest schools (Cal, UCSF, Stanford). I personally would rather be nowhere else, but unfortunately I'm apparently not smart (crazy) enough to get in to any of those places.

Interestingly enough, one of my professors (and one of my fellow coaches on my little league team) did the Bay Area school loop. Cal undergrad B.S. in Biochem. PhD in Biochem from UCSF. Postdoc at Stanford.

All I can say is... daaaaaaaammmmmmmmmnnnnnnnnnn...

Agreed. I would have loved to gone to Cal. Not in the cards for me but definitely my kind of place. You make it as a Cal premed you can make it anywhere. Besides, like you said, the area is great.

I'm with the rest of you likely ex-patriots of the Golden state. Its really a strange phenomenon--the academic fervor that permeates the state's premed populations. A 3.4 cum will get you nothing here. I wonder what the cultural difference is that drives the upward push for excellence with regards to gpa/mcat here. We export more premeds than any other state I'd bet.

Yeah, I feel ya ... I was talking to some older Docs who went to school at UCSF way back in the day and they said there's been about the same number of seats open at UC med schools for the last 30-40 years. Only difference is that now there's 35 Million people living in the state (pumping out loads of Premed Cali Gunners) compared to 20 Million in 1970 ... adding 10 new spots for the UC PRIME program - while awesome - ain't going to have much impact on us pre-meds in terms of getting in to a state med shcool, naw mean?

It's the same reason that kids trying to get into Cal now need a 4.3 GPA ... sigh, i remember back when a 4.0 was the ****.

good luck,
d

Props to you for getting accepted to Texas schools. You pulled a hat-trick even Texas residents would be envious about! 👍

Cali resident, 33O, 3.7 here.....I applied to all Cali school. I estimate that I only have 30% to get in any of them *sighs*

But besides appyling to Med School, Cali is truely the best state. We got the sunshine and the beach, and very cheap tuition for my beautiful San diego Campus ;p

I'm your number twin. Why o why are all the cali kids pumping nice numbers? It makes me look like an average joe even though i'm well above average stats wise.

Cuz we are in california *Sighs* I wish I had grew up in a stupid state now

As to answer OP's question, because we are Cali people, the average number of med school we apply to is 30. Just fill in any reasonable school that would allow out-of-state students for them, until you hit 30 or so.

I remember when Cal beat UCLA in the pac 10 basketball tourney...I died a little that day. Now we have Kevin Love and Cal will prolly suck again.

I remember when Cal lost to my school (Arizona) in football. Great day for Arizona football. Unfortunately, that was probably the only good thing that happened to us all season. Basketball didn't do much better either...

What is "Cal"? I'm confused....

Strange? Really? Have you *been* to Westwood/Beverly Hills/UCLA area? On the five minute drive to campus you see at least ten Porsches, a few Masteris, gorgeous residences, and plenty of beautiful women/men. I say it's a combination of greed and hormones that results in 985409238753 premeds from our lovely state. I'm sure the thick layer of smog helps too🙄

I'm not saying this is true of all premeds, but I speculate quite a few of them have questionable ambitions.
