It's about two hours, give or take. Depends on where in Boston you're leaving from, whether you have any traffic getting out of the city, how fast you like to drive, what the weather is like, etc. And as I said before, it's a really easy drive - wide-open interstates the whole way up.
 
If there's snow on the road while you're driving, do everything more slowly than you think you need to. That means drive at a slower speed, don't brake hard, don't accelerate quickly, and don't swerve suddenly. (Drive like there's a full glass of water in the seat next to you that you don't want to spill.) The snow means you've got less traction to work with, and you don't want your wheels' static friction to switch to kinetic!

Thanks for the advice Hangin' - It's turn into the spin, right? I drive to northern Indiana about every Christmas, so I'm not completely inexperienced (though I've had pretty good luck with the weather and the turnpike has good road service). Anyway, I have that week off so I can leave early if I need to - hang out in Boston.
 
Wow, my feeling is you really don't need to worry about snow unless you're driving up in the middle of a storm. The Interstates are always clear within a day or so after a storm, and Interstate is pretty much all you take to get to Hanover.

is it realistic to try to catch a 7pm flight from boston logan after the interview? well, i guess we'll find out 'cause that's what i'll have to do
 
That's cutting it pretty close. It's a 2.5 hour drive to Logan that time of day. If there is snow it will be close. Manchester would be better. My last interview was over at 3 but some ppl had them until 330.

I'm a second year MD/PhD student at Dartmouth. You can take the Dartmouth Coach from Boston to Hanover. The bus says it takes about 3 hours but it's about 2 if you're driving (depending on traffic). The bus leaves every 2 hours.

This list isn't comprehensive, it just shows the places where DMS students most commonly match. They, over the last five years, have typically gone to hospitals affiliated with (in this order):
DMS
Harvard
Tufts
Brown
UCSF
Cornell
UCLA
UVM
Michigan
Penn
Minnesota
Stanford
Virginia
UC-Davis
UW
Yale

This list does not list every DMS graduate from those five years.

What exactly is "preliminary"? Is it like a year of research? If you do a "preliminary" before going to derm, would you still have to do an internship year before starting the 3 year residency?

And anyone know what the average debt of a DMS graduate is?

Thanks. I was actually planning on renting a car and driving, and at the same time testing my new GPS gadget 🙂.

They mentioned that it was lower than the average public school graduate's debt, which is about $130k if I remember correctly.
 
has anyone heard from DMS recently? I interviewed in late October and have yet to hear from them 🙁

hey nycNERD, i had a brief stint at sju. How do you like it there?
 
i have a skirt suit i bought in the summer for my other interviews, and cant really afford another suit but i do have a warm jacket. what should be done about shoes? change from boots to heels? if i understand correctly, we have to take a bus to the hospital from the medical school. any advice? thanks!

Wear tights under the skirt. Keep your torso warm. I'm also sure they won't mind if you change shoes for when you're walking around vs. in your interview.

I was just there yesterday. It's cold but you aren't outside too much. You should wear a heavy jacket w/ gloves, scarf, and hat/hood and bring a pair of shoes to change into. If its not snowing, flat leather dress shoes are fine, but if its snowing, they are completely understanding about wearing boots to an interview!

Sort of like how John Edwards has been getting by wearing hiking boots campaigning in New Hampshire and Iowa. Looks kind of cool. But you'd want a nice pair for an interview. Preferably not too many miles on the trail.
 
Got my MD-PhD acceptance today. Interviewed early November.

Their MD committee doesn't meet very often (MD/PhD less often🙁), so they keep everyone waiting. But when they do send offers they are often accompanied by handwritten postcards, very warm, unlike the weather🙂

Good luck everyone, they send tons of offers, so patience is the key.

And diatom, I slept on the couch of the "there's a piece of heaven in Central America" dude during my interview, I'm sure you know him, or are him:laugh:

Congrats! It sounds like you stayed with my roommate (Pablo is the only one who would say such things, but I'm pretty sure he's never heard of SDN).

I took the Dartmouth coach from Boston Logan and thought that was a superior way to go. It took about 3 hours and we saw 4 or 5 little sedans in the ditch on the 89 on the way up the road. The conditions weren't great at the time and it was dark. I'd go public all the way. If conditions are good, you may try it but with any snow on the ground it could be challenging. Parking is difficult on campus anyway.

has anyone who interviewed back in october heard anything? i interviewed early october, but still nothing but silence from dartmouth....i know they said that "no news is good news" but this prolonged period of silence is getting me worried.....🙁

anyone with any uplifting stories?

I interviewed in Dec. I was hoping to hear something soon, but it sounds like they are a little slow at getting back since you all interviewed 2 months before me and haven't heard. Does anyone know how long it takes them to get back to us on average?

do you think it would help sending a letter of interest at this stage? or have they already assigned us our "score" for their internal list?

Sorry to intrude on the discussion of post-interview stuff, but I received a complete email from Dartmouth near the end of October (I sent all my stuff in about a month before). Is it unusual that I haven't received a decision yet?
 
Also no word. I interviewed in early November. I really like Dartmouth, but I'm a little frustrated, because I would like to start making plans for the summer and fall, and that is going to depend on where I am going. But when it comes down to it, I'll keep waiting for Dartmouth like a scorned lover. Why, Dartmouth, why?! Did you get that letter I sent? I know you said we need a little time apart, but I've had a lot of time to think about it.

As far as a letter, who knows. If it doesn't change your committee score, perhaps they might be willing to give you a bump if you are near the ultimate cut off line if you sent a letter expressing interest.

It's not necessarily bad. I got an interview offer in the mail about two months after I got that complete e-mail.

I was complete at mid-August and received an interview invite the beginning of November.

I figure that as it gets later into the season, there's more stuff for them to get through, making decisions take longer to get through. Good luck, though!

Just curious, has Dartmouth sent out any rejections, or they just wait till the end before letting people know?

Yeah, I wish they'd just reject you when they made the decision instead of waiting till March I haven't heard anything from dartmouth, literally nothing. No completion notice, no interview, no rejection..just silence. I REALLY wish they didn't do everything through postal mail. 🙁 Ah well, I'm not really a small-town person anyways.

In the rejection thread, you can see that a good number of people did get pre-interview rejections already. I'm not sure how many post-interview rejections have been given out, but there are some, at least.

I'm not certain about pre-interview, but they have sent post-interview rejections (unfortunately).

I'd also love to know if there are any late DMS applicants out there (ie complete November or later) who received recent news, whether a rejection or an interview invite. I was complete in late November and still nothing yet. 👍
