Davis Final Decisions

Ok, thanks for waiting everybody. You're all in.

AND you get free in-n-out for being so patient.

Mr. Belding, you deserve some free In-N-Out for your patience. Seriously, my treat. Y'know, if they ever tell you anything.

I feel bad that the school is so behind in admissions. I know you all know the move was a big factor in that, but I know it doesn't make the waiting any easier.

That said, my worst experience back in the day was with USC. I interviewed in late October, and they did not send me a decision until the end of APRIL. No joke. I had to call repeatedly before they finally sent me anything! I suspect they lost my file, but of course, I can't prove it. 😛

Aww, too kind, too kind.

Truth is, it wouldn't be so agonizing if I didn't want it so badly. I haven't interviewed at any schools that I like nearly as much as davis...

So if it takes any longer, I just might be forced to eat myself to death. Will you buy me anything on the menu I want, 'cause I'm pretty sure a 10x10 would do it...

Technically, the 10x10 is not on the menu. 😉 But while we're on the subject, ever have the animal-style fries? If the burgers don't kill you, those absolutely will!

So no death by 10x10'ing? God, I can't do anything right. Back to the drawing board...

Seriously, this is like a dysfunctional relationship...

UCD: Baby, baby, baby, I only hit you cuz I love you

Me: You love me? 😳

 I can't imagine how anxious you must be waiting on Davis. UCD is far and away my first choice and I can't stop checking my e-mail, hoping for some good news... and I'm only a month into the waiting game!

How bout instead of a 10x10 we eat five Double doubles? Then maybe hop on over to the Krispy Kreme across the street. Oh yeah...

I can't believe it's been five months, and I really wonder if my file has been lost when they moved to new office.😳
Mr. belding, you have any idea? Are we the only two leftovers from oct. interviews.

As far as I know, we are the only leftovers.

I'm with you; I really don't know what else to do. I have called repeatedly (like 4 or 5 times) and have been given a deadline everytime that has come and gone. I spoke to an admissions person in January that told me that my application had already been sent to the adcomm and that a decision was forthcoming. Everytime since that first call, I have been told the same thing: namely, that my application was in the hands of the adcomm. Other people who interviewed on my day (two are posters on this thread) have heard, and I just assumed that they reviewed each interview day en bloc. My recurring thought is that my app is caught in an eddy because they haven't been able to come to a decision on it, but I keep telling myself that if that were the case, they would have waitlisted me.

I try to reassure myself that the move is at fault...

Could a LOI or update tilt the balance in our favor?

...but honestly, any update at this point make me feel like bagging for it. I would rather just pray to the Lord.

I actually did send in an update a few months ago. I can't really send a LOI yet so I just have to wait it out, I think...

according to the admissions office, they dont look at updates because theyre so swamped.

I even clarified

me "so if i were to send a LOI it would be a waste of paper?"
her "yes it would"

Hey gang, this is my first time posting & I too am a leftover from October 😕 . I interviewed 10/30 and got an e-mail in late Jan/early Feb stating that the admissions committee had reviewed my file and would be reviewing it AGAIN after it was done interviewing ALL applicants. Hang in there Mr. Belding & Guoj, us leftovers gotta stick together 😀. Gluck to everyone on this thread still waiting for a response from Davis or any school for that matter. Waiting SUX Monkey Nuts!👎

I'm so proud of my thread. It's all grown up, seven pages now. : ). Good luck to all of you!

But at least you heard you were on the waitlist... I have heard nothing whatsoever 😡

What do I win?

*bump*

anyone with an update? anyone? (i think the bueller part is implied here...)

ah in-n-out, when will they open one on the east coast?

but speaking of burgers, if davis accepts me off of post-interview hold, i will buy everyone here the "Annihilator" from murder burger (or whatever it is called now) near davis. 1 lb burger, 1 lb fries + large milk shake. that's the way to go. haha.

I have heard they have given out 1/2 of the acceptances now.

It's actually in Davis, but yes, they changed the name to "redrum burger."

I personally don't like to think about jack nicholson while I eat my burger, but hey, their food is still delicious.

mmmmmmmmm...Murder Burger...Evade, can we do the whole sepuku thing there instead?

I have heard they have given out 1/2 of the acceptances now.

The last US News I looked at had Davis accepting over twice as many students as they have spots (202 accepted for a 91 student class). Curious, did you hear they had accepted half of who they will eventually accept (i.e. 101 students) or half of the spots that the class will be comprised of (45 students, which then means according to prior years, they have only sent out a quarter of the acceptance letters)? Hopefully the question isn't too confusing...

Heck yes! Although I confess that I'm still a little miffed at them for changing their name. I liked Murder Burger.

Alternatively, if you're in the mood for Mexican food, you can obtain a Super Giant Burrito from Guad, another Davis favorite. I'm pretty sure that one carries a high lethality rate as well. 😀

It makes me happy that, in the absence of any form of communique from Davis, we have digressed to debating the most efficient way to get fat in a short amount of time.

Seriously, I'm all for eating as a way of handling stress. I'm mentally prepared to gain upwards of 30 pounds throughout medschool. Sweet, sweet, comfort cookies...

Oh and to the person who said they've given out 1/2 their acceptances: if this is true, it would mean they've given out 1/2 of their initial 100 acceptances. So roughly, 50 are out so far.

Still no word. 😴 At least my status page was un-erased.

The context of the conversation makes me think that they've got confirmed acceptances for 1/2 the spots, though I could be wrong.

When i talked to Dr. Bera, he said that the initial hundred acceptances would be sent out by april some time, then another 100 or so would come off the waitlist up until school starts.

So I would think that there are a confirmed 50 acceptances or so sent out. The good news I hope is that a lot of the people they initially accept (at least from what I can tell on SDN) are super pre-meds and getting accepted to other schools they want to go to more.

I hope hope hope that I make that initial acceptance wave, I don't know if I can handle waiting on the waitlist, too.

Davis is notoriously slow. We're slow because we take the time to evaluate every student. It'll be worth the wait. Good luck to all those waiting....but realize they just jacked up tuition again thanks to Arnold. It might cost as much to go to Davis next year as it does a private school or more expensive if you got scholarships at private school. $28,000. Six years ago, it was 10,000/year. Just ridiculous.

Oh yea, Guad rocks!!! (north davis one on Covell, not the crappy one on Mace)

They could double the tuition and Davis would still be my top choice, I loved Davis and really want to be in northern cali near my family. The slightly lower tuition is really just an added benefit.

Right on, dblhelix. I would've made the same decision if it cost more. Can't beat being close to family and California weather

hi all,

new to this thread and i'd simply like to vent a bit. I interviewed in early november and haven't heard a peep from anyone. i've called numerous times, sent an update letter (though, as mentioned earlier in this thread, the admissions staff advised me it'd be a waste of time and paper), and have been checking my email non-stop. And, here we are at the ides of march, more than 4 months after the interview, and i haven't received an ounce of anything from anyone at davis. moreover, when i call, the staff simply says they are backed up and they haven't any idea as to when i may hear from them. i interviewed at other schools in early february and have already heard back!! davis is my top choice but i absolutely do not like the way they have been treating me throughout this process. it makes me think: is this the way the administration treats its students? how about the faculty? is there a culture of lethargy at davis? someone cheer me up por favor👍.

Does anyone know if the interview evaluation online needs to be filled out before we are informed of their decision? And when/where do we get the login/password to get access to that? B/c none of the paperwork they gave me had any such information. Thank you very much.

i don't think that's for us to fill out. i saw that on the website, but i think it might be for the faculty and students who interview US to fill out. i wouldn't worry about it

yeah. there are several people here who feel your pain and would probably echo your sentiments exactly. i interviewed in october and was "lucky" to hear something in Feb, but it was only a "Hold" so I'm back to waiting for a real decision as well. Davis, please get your stuff together!!!!

Haha, yea, that's for the interviewer to fill out. You should find out 6-8 weeks from your interview. Good luck.

I haven't been on SDN for over a year and now I'm back on in the middle of finals week because I want to procrastinate....and I'm working on getting my 1000th post, three years after being a member.

😡

Bump. And by bump I mean something harder than bump, like shove or smack or whatever.

Mr. Belding, I think we need to finish page 7 to hear back somthing frome the school ..

well...St Patrick's day is almost here...good luck everyone!:luck: :luck:

hmmmmmm... I thought we just had to get it to page 7... maybe someone should call about this.

Oh, and ask them what is going on with my application while you have them on the phone.

k, thanks.

I had a meeting with Dr. Bera and company yesterday as part of a focus group to improve student life (not that student life is lacking, but just to get some ideas on what is working, what's not, etc.). I wasn't aware they are adding 12 more spots from last year, you guys might have found that out at your interview. Anyways, that's good news for you all. There is definitely plenty of room here at the new building, so no worries about it being overcrowded.

I mentioned that I had a really tough time with the admissions process, how long it took to find out, etc. and that I knew many people who were applying this year were experiencing the same. I also mentioned the lack of quality in the admissions website, which they said they are working on. All it takes, I told them, is a simple page letting students know what their status is. I'm sure the main problem is that most students' status is yet to be determined so I am not sure if that would help any. However, next year the website will be pretty slick; from what I understand, they're working on it.

At any rate.. last year the process was slow as well. By April they had offered spots to 110 applicants and had 90 something spots. Basically, those interviewing in April were interviewing for a waitlist spot. However, just because you interviewed in November doesn't necessarily mean that you will be notified before anyone else. They want to compare the Nov. applicants with the March applicants, and so on and so forth..

In May-June, the waitlist was formed, and began to move quickly as students began to withdraw from Davis to attend other schools. Many people get in off the waitlist so don't be dismayed.

Many people have asked about the curriculum and such, what I've thought about it as an MS1 - I'll share my thoughts for you right here and right now..

CURRICULUM:

As you may know, Davis has taken a more integrative approach to learning this stuff called medicine. Block I consisted of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Cell and Tissue Biology and Doctoring (is that it?). These classes were pretty rigorous, and it definitely takes a lot of work. The way the courses are structured is that for example, when you begin studying the heart in physiology is when you study the heart in anatomy. This can be challenging, however, in that not everything is integrated (it would be impossible). Other courses have additional material (such as cardiac, skeletal and smooth muscle properties in Cell and Tissue). So while there is an attempt to integrate everything, there ends up being extra stuff to study. It helps though to have the integration that IS there. It also helps that it is spread over a longer amount of time, but hurts when you go to take a final on stuff that you learned 5 months ago! Pros and cons, they're everywhere..

The MS1s really got bogged down with quizzes every Monday last block. It felt like a marathon, and for that, we have requested that quizzes be every 2-3 weeks. Yes, you can thank us. It's nice to have a weekend here and there to go out of town, do fun things, etc. We just couldn't do that with the quizzes.

The LCME requested that UCD have additional student-directed learning, fewer lecture based material, and more independent learning. This is why Davis has integrated ISDLs (interactive student directed learning), ICBLs (interactive case base learning) and AMP (application of medical principles). What's nice about this, is that the cases are integrated with whatever material we are learning that week. What's not so nice, is that the classes are mandatory (you have to sign in), but these only count for 10% of your grade. If you are the type to do things on your own, are doing well in the class, you don't need to come. I have been getting a lot out of these - physicians/clinicians from the hospital teach these, and I am able to see a clinical perspective on the subject, rather than a PhD's perspective. Clinical is what will matter eventually. I think the most resisted part of the new curriculum change thus far has been the WEEKLY quizzes (which have now been changed to bi-weekly), and ISDLs. ISDLs are micro and immunology cases that are presented by students to students, and at first, they were going wayyy to long and detailed, and required attendance. The instructors do draw from this material to put on the quiz, which was overwhelming at times. They are also testing out something called IRAT and GRAT in a Team Based Learning (TBL) concept. I know, I get sick of all the acronyms too. You can look this stuff up online, but it's been shown to improve learning. Basically you study material ahead of time, take a test, turn it in, then take the same test in a small group, and turn that in. Your grade is the average of the two tests. This stimulates conversation about the material, and obviously is mandatory. You'll find that in any medical school, mandatory lectures are resisted (there's always something else you need to be doing!). All in all, it's not too bad. Only 10% of your grade - enough to want to do well on, but not enough to stress you out if you do poorly on a test here and there.

Mostly all instructors bend over backwards for the students, stay late after labs and classes, and are very fast to respond to questions by emails. I was particularly impressed with our Cell and Tissue biology course, it is second to none. Anatomy was impressive as well, it just moves pretty fast.

I love Davis, I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. The people are great, the teachers are great, the curriculum is working for me. I'd recommend this school to anyone that wants a non-competitive atmosphere, great clinical experiences, and ample study space in a brand new building.

Well I hope this has helped you guys out a bit - maybe it will convince you to come here, maybe it will convince you to go elsewhere. The point is, go where you will be happy. You'll find you will be a lot less stressed out and it will be easier to study and learn if you're happy. Feel free to respond on here if you have any further questions about anything at all.

Good luck, and do well out there!!

I had a meeting with Dr. Bera and company yesterday . . .

Thanks a lot for the update. You mentioned that they did not form the waitlist until may/june. Does that mean we might have to wait until then to hear about acceptances or rejections if we are not placed on the waitlist? Thanks for keeping us poor pre-meds in the know. It's much appreciated!

Thanks firebird69guy!

Now, if we interviewed in Feb., can we still get accepted in that first batch??

Oh I hope so.

you're welcome.. I remember last year there were people that never heard anything until the waitlist was formed. So yeah.. there's a good chance that you might have to wait until then to hear about acceptances/rejections.

If you're still in the running, keep your head up!! If you interviewed a long time ago and haven't heard anything yet, I would think it's good news.. waitlist or an acceptance.

good luck!!

rejection email came today 🙁 🙁 🙁

fyi, interviewed Jan 19th

so sorry to hear that, Lovable. 🙁
