Davis Final Decisions

No news here in So Cal today. Interviewed 10/30 & heard back in late Jan/early Feb. Letter sounded like they'd be comparing me to other applicants @ the end of the interview season...figure I'll have to sit tight until early May?...*sighs*😴

I am in the exact same boat. And at the rate they're reviewing I seriously don't expect to hear anything for a long time. Do they have to at least give us an update by May 15??

I would have to think that for us Holdies they would tell us one of the big three, Accept, Reject or Waitlist, by the 15th of May. One thing that I find mildly frustrating is that this has become a de facto non-rolling admission process for a majority of us. I have this exercise in patience contrasted by another school that I interviewed with that responded two weeks after the interview. It wouldn't be so hard if I wasn't heavily leaning towards Davis if they would show me some love...

my thoughts exactly. i am fortunate enough to have acceptances at other schools that i truly like, but Davis is really a place where I want to be. I never imagined this process would drag out for so long. I think I will hear from my non-rolling school with a late March decision date way before I hear from Davis and a few other schools. crazy.

I was just invited for an early-April interview slot. Is it safe to assume that this is for a waitlist spot? Is there a diplomatic way I can find out?

congrats!! i think it might be since they have a small class and started interviewing in late Sept, but it's hard to say since many of us have yet to hear back from the interview or were put on hold. but maybe that means they are being careful with their decisions and still have spots left?

From everything I have seen so far, I would not think that you are interviewing for a waitlist spot. The acceptances have been few and sporadic, and as the abundance of people on the waitlist (or in purgatory/limbo like me) reflects, I think davis is doing more of a non-rolling type of approach. I would go. I for one, was really impressed; I interviewed at top 20-schools that I would turn down to go to davis.

yeah, i posted this in the august mcaters thread...also got the invite this morning....yay!

i went ahead and called the admissions office (since the number is different from that of the interview coordinator)...the nice lady said everyone who comes in april will be interviewing for direct admissions, NOT for waitlist spots. she said uc davis doesn't interview specifically for waitlist....

good luck!!!

Barcelona-Bound, do I remember you from the god-awful UW limbo last year?

Reapplying sucks, doesn't it?

Interesting. I hope that is the case with april interviewees because Dr. Bera told our group that mid-Feb. interviewees will barely make the first round of acceptance letters for the initial 100 or so acceptances. I hope though that they will straight out accept people all the way up until april.

yup that was me!!!!!!! eeeek.....unfortunately, UW gave me the boot early on this year....no 3-time interviewee for me. how bout you? 🙂

i'm hearing so many good things about davis. i'm really excited to head up there for a couple days. and now i have to go back and re-read your burger posts....lol

g'luck

So weird, where are all these acceptees? Are they just too laid-back and cool to be on SDN?

I just wanted to chime in and say best of luck to all of you. :luck: :luck: :luck: I interviewed in late Jan. and am on pins and needles... I loved Davis so much too, just adored it. Everybody was so genuinely nice and helpful, and I liked the vibe in the hospital, and I even liked Sacto!

Did any of you get a sense of what the clinical years are like? How much we would get to jump in and help with stuff, how committed to teaching the staff are, what is the volume and variety of stuff we would see? Sorry if I'm being redundant, if this has been discussed before, just tell me where to go.:luck:

Mmmm burgers...

I got no love from UW last year but I'm taking another stab at it manana... interviewing on the very last day of interviews. Let's just say I have, uh, modest expectations for that one...

It took some serious coercing/letter writing to get them to let me up there. I guess I appreciate that they are humoring me

I posted about my clinical rotation experiences in the thread called Questions for UC students, or something like that. I am sure you can search and find it. Also, I have blogged pretty extensively about my clinical experiences this year (link below).

That said, overall I think the clinical experience here is very good. UCDMC is a tertiary care center and you will see tons of stuff that comes in from all over Northern California and parts of Nevada. How much you get to do depends on a number of things: how early in the year it is, what your team lets you do, and how comfortable/enthusiastic you are. Some rotations are very hands-on. On all in-patient rotations they expect you to take responsibility for your patients, to help the team out, and will usually let you do procedures and things that are approproate for your level. Overall, students here match well and tend to feel they are well-trained when the go off on away rotations at other hospitals. Clinical training is definitely a strong point here. If you have specific questions, I am happy to answer them.

I just got an interview from Davis too. However, after interviewing at a number of top 20 schools, I can't really find a compelling reason to go to Davis (except for the fact that I got waitlisted at all of those schools). What does Davis have going for it??

Beautiful brand-new facilities, an excellent teaching hospital (level 1 trauma center for norcal), great weather, nice little college town nearby but also Sacramento and SF bay area (lots to do whether you like outdoors or the city), the best student-run free clinics out of all the UCs, low tution, and happy students.

Other than that, not much.

And when they ask me, "why do you want to go to UCDavis?" These are certainly good reasons but not really specific enough for the school to say, "you belong here" nor me to say I belong there. At most of the other schools I've interviewed at, I had very specific reasons whether research ties or personal ties or unique aspects that were a very specific match with me.

I'm sorry, dantt, but I really can't tell you what, specifically, makes Davis the right school for dantt. Why don't you send me a list of your hobbies, turn ons, and astrological sign and maybe I can come up with something.

Haha, I get your point. I don't know, just a thought. If I don't get into my top choice, I'll definitely start thinking a lot harder of why I'm a good fit.

Grrr! I know how U feel. I've been accepted to other medical schools since Dec but the CA schools have me waitlisted or still waiting. Davis should officially stop calling it rolling admissions b/c it seems like it's only rolling for people w/4.0's & 45's on the MCAT (who've also hiked Everest). Okay so maybe I'm exaggering a little...

I think this is Davis' sneaky way of making sure the only people who attend are people who REALLY REALLY want to go to Davis. The good news is that if any of us end up there, we will at least have that in common. I can't tell you how annoyed I was to interview at various different schools and talk to 1st year med students who (a) weren't really sure that they wanted to be doctors and (b) didn't like the school all that much. I appreciate their honesty but I also felt like shoving them off a cliff.

Have you tried calling or e-mailing them? If so, what has their response been?
If you go through the majority of this thread you will see my whining about their inability to answer my questions to be pervasive. You will also see that I like In-N-Out.

Yes, I have called them repeatedly (today being the most recent discourse). It has been less than informative.

Good luck folks.

Oh, and you might also pick up that I wish Kbear was single. It's subtle, but its there.

Do all UC schools take a crap load of time when deciding who's getting in, waitlisted, or rejected?

Like what if you apply earlier, like July, does it still take a long time for them to get back to you?

Thanks for the cliffnotes about this thread bro...I was way too lazy to read through 8 pages of this stuff....

I also enjoy fine dining at In-N-Out

No, not all UC's but most. I applied super early (submitted all my stuff by mid June) and am still waiting to hear back from Davis & UCSF. UCI & USC (not a UC) were pretty quick to waitlist me (within 2wks to month of interviewing) and UCSD & UCLA didn't get back to me until late Feb.

75% sure I'm going to Davis. Who else will likely be there come fall? Who is attending second look days? Good luck to all of those waiting.

So one of our family friends is on the Board of Trustees, and he got my application. He read through it, told my dad it was an incredible application, said that UCD would definitely accept me BUT that they probably wouldn't mail me anything until may, because on my application there was a specific note, saying that I'd been accepted to UCSF. He told my dad that UCSF often takes applicants that UCD wants. He told my dad he'd spoken to Bera about me, (Bera was my interviewer), and that they "knew" I'd attend UCSF over them, which may be true, but geez, I don't even get to decide? Guess I'll withdraw now...

Thats messed up... don't even complain... cuz either way you are going to med school, and 20k others wont.

That sucks, but I am absolutely not surprised. The UC's definitely compete for students and I think the UC's totally play this game. But yeah, you'd think that if you're qualified and you earned it you would be able to make this decision yourself. Anyway, congrats on your UCSF acceptance!

Curious, does UCD have better financial aid/scholarships than UCSF, or are all UCs in the same boat? I read somewhere an overwhelming majority of UCD students get some grants/scholarships, is that also true for UCSF?

how do they compete for acceptances? Do they all compare students?

they compete as in most of us apply to all of the UC schools and each school wants us to go to their school. They are all going after a very similar applicant pool.

I interviewed in mid-January. I got the "Your application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee and has been held for further consideration. A final decision on your application will be made after all applicants being considered for admission have been reviewed." email on Saturday afternoon.

I tried reading through the last pages, but couldn't find any information. Are a lot of people in my boat? When does the interview season go until?

edit: blah, there's a bunch of info on the beginning of this page, i'm blind

yep, I'm on hold too. welcome to the club!

From what he told me, UCSD and UCLA have more similar picks, and UCSF and UCD have more similar picks (which means those pairs have more similar cultures). UCD feels that they specifically lose students to SF more than anywhere else (i figure it's the norcal socal divide). Who knows where Irvine fits in... But, Bera during the interview asked straight up if I had interviewed at SF. And told me that he believed SF would take me, so that he would not respond until I'd written him to let him know the outcome... odd... but I had been told they played this 'game' but I hadn't really expected it this way...

OH, and about financial aid, UCD is the best UC when it comes to grant/scholarships (merit as well as need - although UCSF has great need-based but almost no merit). So there is a difference. Not a huge difference, but one nonetheless.

I just counted it up. I'm at 23 weeks post interview.

Brutal.

If you get to 25 weeks, you'll have officially trumped my USC wait-'o-horridness. They kept me on the back burner for just a little over 6 months. That was far and away my longest wait. Initially, I was interested, but by the end, I'd kind of stopped caring. . .I just wanted them to tell me something for the sake of curiosity.

Wish there was something I could tell you. 🙁

Does anyone know when the orientation/first day of classes is for Davis? I checked on the first day of classes thread, but couldn't find Davis.

someone posted on the class thread that orientation is 7/30-8/3 and class starts 8/6. are you interviewing soon notdeadyet? good luck!

yeah, that was me. and that's the dates I was given, 7/31-8/3 class on 8/6. I haven't heard any other information. I presume an orientation packet will be given soon enough?

Shameless 100th Post for 100th Post's Sake

Listen here Xtremeangel24.

I leave for two days to get my face all chopped up and you go back on SDN. Big trouble, young lady. When I get back there I'm going to eat all of your crab wontons. And I won't feel bad about it either. Now go cut some cords. And stain them too.

Now I'm going back to put ice on my face.

P.S. I'm not sure if I buy the whole UCD/UCSF and UCLA/UCSD match up that someone wrote about, because I interviewed at one from each pair and got rejected from the others.

In one more week, I will be officially in Post-interview Waiting Hall of Fame.
Six months... without any update, not even a freaking email.
I really like my faculty interviewer at davis, sadly i won't be there for sure, but i will still wait, wait till the end of the world...

Btw, Mr. Belding, you'll join the hall of fame soon.
