Davis?

Sweetness, Scored an Interview. I was just recently telling a friend that WICHE is so useless. Why did I even bother with the application if I cant get into any of the schools. This sure came out of left field and I am Definately excited.

I got an interview invite. Best Val Day ever.
Anyone going to the workshop/orientation on the 24th?

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought of checking my spam folder 😀 I thought i was going crazy... though eventually my invite landed right in the inbox. 🙂

I finally got through after hearing the busy tone about a million times, and they basically said "How's the 26th at this time?" I didn't have any problems with that, so I'm not sure how flexible they'd be if you tried to request another day from the one they suggest.

If you follow some of the links in the email there's a few shuttle services that take you door to door from the sacramento airport to the campus. I'm not positive but I think I might use that.

Also...I'm planning to attend the workshop and orientation, it seems like they have a good day planned.

i also got an interview... out of state... yay 🙂

ive been non stop checking my email the last few days and for whatever reason, ive memorized how many spams were in the spam folder (probably by seeing it there 1000 times) so when i noticed it went up by one, out of curiousity i checked it... and there was my UC Davis interview invite 🙂 not sure why it ended up in there... but at least I found it!

So just a question that maybe someone can answer... Ill be flying out from Boston and I am wondering what would be the closest and/or easiest airport to fly into? Also, is renting a car required?

And last but not least, am I right in thinking they have already picked out our interview day and we are calling to find that date out?

Thanks and congrats to everyone who got an invite!!!

Fly into Sacramento Airport; it's only about a 15-20 minute drive from campus. If you don't want to rent a car, take the airporter; it's only $20

http://www.davisairporter.com/

Once you're in Davis, you can take the student-run Unitrans bus for $1 which will drop you off on campus. If you catch the right line (health center), it's only a 10-15 minute walk to Valley Hall.

thanks for the info... one more question... do you know of any near-by hotels where the cab fare might be relatively cheap? thanks again for any information you might have 🙂

I'll be at both as well. I also agreed to the student host even though I already attend Davis (I'm more interested in picking their brain).

My interview is on the morning of the 27th. Eeek!!😍

Major congrats to everyone who's gotten an interview! <3

I haven't gotten an email. Now I just wish I knew if that means it's over (do they send out all the emails at once, in a mass-email format, in one fell swoop?) or if there's still any chance I might get one (if they don't send them all at the exact same time). And I wish I knew if I will be getting a rejection email and/or snail mail letter if I DON'T get an interview, or will I not hear anything until April 1? The tension is killing me. 🙁 Even if I didn't get one, which I'm guessing I didn't since my email box is empty as of right now, I just want some sort of confirmation so I can move on with life and stop checking my email a bazillion times a day and worrying.

i'm also wondering the same thing....hm....also, did any of you Davis applicants apply under VMOP (vet med oppoortunities) and also the career diversity forms? so are notifications/rejections being sent until the end of this week or is today the BIG day for everything? 😛

but congrats to all who have received interviews 🙂

Does someone know if they'll be sending out invitations tomorrow, etc? or was it just today??

hey ana :wavey: i was wondering the same thing! haha

Keeping fingers and toes crossed that more invites will be sent out tomorrow :luck: :luck:

CONGRATULATIONS to those who got invites, though!!

I sent in a career diversity form, but didn't apply under VMOP (not sure if you were asking for people who did *either*, or only people who did *both*), and I got an invite today.

so are notifications/rejections being sent until the end of this week or is today the BIG day for everything?
I'm guessing that if they're planning to do 200 interviews, then they send out invitations to their top 200 candidates. Some number of those people are going to decline, having changed their mind, already gotten in to their top choice, whatever. So then they'd have some open interview slots, and probably start contacting the 201st, 202nd, 203rd, etc., until all the slots are full. That's just a guess, though.

Interview offer by e-mail! 🙂 Good luck to those who haven't heard yet!

Hey everyone there is a rumor going around my college that Davis grads are having trouble getting jobs because they don't have practicle experience! People are saying because there cirriculum is so heavily classroom based that may grads have a ton of knowledge, but aren't being hired because they need so much training.

Just wondering if anyone else had heard this - I really hope it is not true - Davis is my #1.

:scared: :scared: :scared:

I think it's *possible* to get a DVM from Davis without much practical/hands-on experience. But that's only if you limit yourself to the minimum required. There are a *lot* of elective courses available, and I get the idea that a lot of them are hands-on. Also, you can do RAVS in the summer. You can get on the foal team (4th-years only?) and possibly other student clinical teams like that. Anyway, a current student or grad would obviously give a more informed response. But getting my hands dirty is what I'm here for, so I worry about the same thing and have found some information to suggest that you *can* get more practical experience at Davis if you want it.

As for dirty rumors, I heard the other day that VCA (or at least some regional VCA manager) doesn't like to hire Davis grads because they all come out intent on specializing, unwilling do do regular general practice work, and wanting every animal in the door to get an ultrasound. That doesn't really sound to me like grads who have no practical experience - just grads who could use a mandatory year of shelter work to disabuse them of the notion that you can't practice medicine without high-tech diagnostics. 🙂

According to a presentation I just heard, the average UCD grad gets 7 job offers before they graduate.

As for practical experience, I do agree that you probably get less at Davis because of the large class size. But for me, I'd rather have the book knowledge and learn on the job. The VMTH is huge and has an enormous case load, but teaching hospitals in general are referral hospitals. You see the weird cases that you'll probably see once again in your lifetime if you pursue general practice, and you'll refer them back to the teaching hospital or a specialty place anyway. The best way to get practical experience IMO (at least for small animal general practice) is to spend time at a small animal clinic as a vet assistant. It's kind of funny, becuase I've been volunteering at the Mercer clinic for the homeless, and I'm the one teaching the vet students how to draw blood, give vaccines, etc.

I applied under VMOP as well as filled out a Career Diversity Form for a LA career. I was never contacted about the VMOP, so not sure if it helped my application at all.

Also, a friend of mine just now received an interview invite, so they're still going out. Good luck to all! :luck:

I'm also on campus and know several vet students. There seems to be plenty of hands-on opportunities, especially for LA vets. Students have a lot of work outside the classroom and travel extensively with the professors to horse events and ranches. I think if you want the outside experience, it's available. And the Mercer Clinic is a great clinical opportunity for all vet students, SA and LA.

So, nope, I believe your rumor to be unfounded 😉

I GOT AN INTERVIEW!!!!!! Currently doing a happy dance around the house while screaming 😀 😀 😀

Congratulations!! See you at the interview orientation!!

Thanks! The email was sent at 11:30 today. See you all there! 🙂

I still haven't heard anything from Davis!!! Are they sending out interviews all week? and why does it take a week to send out 200+ e-mails???

does anybody know if vmop interviews are given at the same time as the admissions interview?

I was wondering if anyone knows how many out-of-state people they're interviewing this year? I just called to schedule my interview and forgot to ask! Darnit! But I'd really like to know if they're interviewing on the order of 100 people for their historically 7 or so out-of-state spots, or if the odds are better than that. Or (gulp) worse. Anyone know anything?

Well, they're interviewing 200 people for a class size of 131 so it's unlikely that they invited too many out-of-staters when they usually only accept ~7. If you got an interview, I'd say your chances at this point are excellent!

Good Luck!:luck:

i'm interviewing 2/27, and arriving that morning ~830 if anyone needs a ride from sac airport - just pm me. leaving the next morning for a 1030 flight.

anyone know of a cheap but decent hotel close to the school? My interview is on March 7th at 9AM and I am flying into Sacramento on the 6th at 930PM and leaving the 8th at 1230 AM (yay for red eye flights).. so I think Ill be staying in a hotel only one night and taking a cab to the interview...

kate_g, thanks for the coupon... every dollar I save can be used towards my $200,000 debt I will be in soon 🙂

Got an interview invite today!!!! (In state)

Yay RTHA06!! When is your interview? Mine's the afternoon of the 5th. Good luck! :luck:

Thanks ShelterGirl!!!
My interview is on March 14th. It is going to be a long three weeks and then some until we find out!!!!
more waiting....
but worth it for sure...😍 😍 😍

hoping someone can enlighten... shocking, i know, but i got a 2.4 (C) in my second physics class, which wsu is requiring me to take over to get a B. i see in the davis guide that they require two quarters of physics (which I have), and they don't allow you to repeat if over a C-. i got the C after i turned in my application, and they don't know about it yet. does anyone know if (1) their acceptances are provisional on getting a B or better in the rest of one's requirements; and (2) i should come clean before i go down there to interview?

🙁 Hey everyone I called Davis today and was told that today was the last day that interviews were going to be sent out (e-amil). Therefore, if I didn't here anything by today, then I would be getting a rejection soon. Oh well I guess I'm off to Michigan (not a bad second choice). 🙂 Sorry if this is bad news to some and good luck to those of you who are interviewing I can't wait to hear about it.

Jen

I think this has to be one of those "call the school" situations. I mean, if you can't find it on their website then probably we can't either. 🙂

You don't have to say "Hi, I'm wildfocus and I just wanted to tell you that I got a C in physics just in case you wanted to reject me before the interview." Just call and ask (anonymously) whether they have a minimum grade that must be attained in any pre-req classes that you take after applying...

My *guess* is that if they have a cutoff, it's that same no-repeat C-, but that's assuming a logically designed policy...

Thanks to those who interviewed today for posting interview feedback so quickly! 😍 Hope it went well and good luck for those on deck!

You're welcome 🙂 Good luck to everyone with upcoming interviews. :luck: If anyone has any questions you can PM me. I thought it went really well, they were very nice and friendly. It seems like everyone says that, but it was definitely true.

For anyone else who interviewed today, do you happen to remember the interviewers' names? I wanted to write a thank-you email but completely forgot their names in the excitement 🙂

I believe their names were Dr. Gino Cortopassi, Dr. Rance LeFebvre, and Dr. Sharon Spier. The lady there was sort of discouraging us from sending thank you notes, saying that they interview so many students and it wouldn't make a difference in the admissions process. They were very nice, that was definitely my most relaxed interview. Did anyone else go to the interview workshop and orientation on Saturday? The new facilities seemed really nice, but the hospital seemed totally empty! I know it's a weekend, but I was surprised. The new equine exercise physiology center had some great equipment, but it looked completely unused. I was disappointed that we couldn't really see any of the surgery rooms or examining rooms or anything, we just walked in the hallways while they explained what was behind the closed doors. Everyone seemed super-nice and that PC tablet is really cool. Davis seems to have a really innovative, technology-based way of teaching the curriculum. I enjoyed the slideshow, it looks like all the students have fun outside of vet school too. I hope they take me!!!!

Did anyone else feel as if the interview just flew by? Afterwards, I just kept thinking about all the things they didn't ask about. But they were SO nice (different than yesterday; I had Drs. Cortopassi, Theon, and Boyer).

I can't believe we have to wait a month now until finding out! ACK!!😱

i went today too, and the time did fly by... they were very nice - but all my interviewers (at ucd, wsu, csu) have been. perhaps it was a good year?:luck:

From what I hear, interviews used to be much more malignant - they'd pressure you, try to trip you up, ask mean questions, etc. - with the theory that they wanted to find out if you could handle pressure. And I've heard people say that they're realizing that's not a good way to select for personalities that will make good veterinarians. Now I think as long as you don't start out being a jerk yourself, they're much more interested in being supportive and finding out who you really are rather than seeing if they can make you cry. Makes sense to me...

I was at the workshop/orientation as well, and I was pretty surprised at how empty the place was. I asked a couple of people and they said they do usually see a lot of patients - I guess just during the week.

I don't think I'll send the thank-you notes if it's discouraged, especially since I can't be sure those were my interviewers - I'm SO bad with names. I remember their specialties and other random details about them.

P.S I asked one of the first years; she thinks they invited about 25-30 out-of-staters to interview, and the number of spots offered has varied a lot over the last few years but won't be more than 8. One recent year they didn't offer any.

I interviewed at Minnesota, which vies each year with Penn for the #1 and #2 spots in terms of the largest caseload, and it was pretty much empty on the weekend too. I think they just probably don't really do weekend specialty appointments, so if it's a slow day for emergencies...

This might be kind of late.. but for anyone interested in info on Davis the city (hotels, restaurants, random trivia.. etc), check out Davis Wiki.. that site is SUPER cool! 👍 😍

Hmmmmm, so let's do the math:
200 invited for an interview
138 will be offered acceptances (class size is only 131 but they're overadmitting)
25-30 interviewed from out-of-state
8 acceptances from out-of-state

So, out of the 62 interviewees who will not be accepted, a fair chunk of those will be the out-of-staters. I guess that will help out those of us in-state who got interviews, right??? Although, you still have to factor in the DVM/PhD candidates who already interviewed and the fact that many people accepted might go elsewhere so who knows????

Guess we won't know for sure until the end of March. Good luck to all :luck:

Lucky lucky in-staters 🙂 As for people who turn down their acceptances, according to Davis' published statistics, only 8 out of 139 did so last year. Looks like they've already considered that tiny number when they over-admit.

The end of march is a loong time away... Apparently I'm keeping myself busy staring at these numbers 😀

yeah, those numbers don't bode well for us out-of-staters... i started daydreaming about where i could live, how/when to move the family, which laptop i would get, which electives i should take my first year. i probably should stop now, instead of suffer the ache later. 🙁

why does davis have to be so bloody perfect! 😀
