Hi everyone. I'm new to SDN and I was hoping to get some good advice here. I'm 20, Mexican-American and will be first in my family to graduate with a college degree. I already know I'm out for MD and DO right out of college.
  • Year in School: Senior, expected graduation December 2017
  • Country/State of Residence: USA/Texas
  • GPA: 3.094
  • Science GPA: 2.57
  • MCAT: In prep for August 4th test date, Kaplan diagnostic put me at a 494.
  • Research: Beginning new research next week. Was fired from first research program, but produced a poster. My program requires an Honors Thesis to graduate, so that is expected.
  • Volunteering (clinical): None, applied to volunteer at Texas Children's recently.
  • Physician shadowing: Maybe like 2.5 days, one with a GI and two at MD Anderson with a radiologist.
  • Non-clinical volunteering: 6 hours total, 2 stints at the food bank.
  • Extracurricular activities: Mentorship Committee and Social Committee member of a student org within my program, Counseling and Psychological Services Advisory Committee for Student Government Association.
  • Employment history: None
That's the meat and bones of it. My bad grades are in the following:
  • Gen Chem 1: B-
  • Bio 1 lab: B-
  • Orgo 1: F, W, C-
  • Orgo 1 lab: C
  • Physics 1: W, F, C-
  • Physics 2: C
  • Anatomy and Physiology 1: C
A lot of things started happening around sophomore year. I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and a personality disorder, and the grades were a combination of burning out/overload and subconsciously ruining my grades to get back at my mom (the latter is a long story). Now I know that I'm the one who lives with these grades, and I'm lost on what to do here and where to go from here. I'm unsure if I'd be an okay candidate for an SMP, if I need to just graduate and do an informal post-bacc, or if I should just give up on pre-med and do something else in healthcare. There's also getting a second bachelor's degree in a healthcare field through MD Anderson.

The classes I have left to complete my degree are Visual/Performing Arts class, Orgo 2, Biochem 1, Bio 2 lab, Orgo 2 lab, Physics 1 and 2 lab. What's holding me up from finishing my degree already is the Honors Thesis and labs being offered one semester each only (1 in Fall, 2 in Spring).

I just need someone to give me feedback on what I can do to make myself a better applicant, as well as advice for retakes, and where to go from here. If you need more context, info on trends, just let me know.

You need to get yourself fixed first, get the anxiety and personality disorder fixed first, fix your relationship with your mom and then come back because without those 2 components you'll never be ready for the rigors and the long road you have ahead in fixing your app
