I'm very interested to hear more about the computers we're getting...including what accessories will come with them and what we'll need to buy (carry bags, peripherals, etc..)
Hey guys..I just wanted to ask why you guys think technology is so important in medical education? When it comes down to 'hitting the books,' we are usually left with pen notes and a textbook....how do you guys think technology will change this?
Dr. Lenz was talking about using tablet PC's to edit notes on powerpoint while in class....what makes this superior to having print outs and writing notes with pen?
Also, I believe recording lectures and making them digital will be a plus...however, only to an extent. We will be in class for approx 8 hours a day...would we really have time to go through another 8 hrs of lecture in one day to rewatch? Maybe if you didn't quite grasp a topic and need to rewatch that certain segment...that is certainly plausible.
Thanks for the input guys
Hey guys, see i think you could double stream the lectures, so pretty much watch the whole day in a few hours. However, i know kids at other schools watch their lectures mostly when they skip school. DCOM has mandatory attendance and iam more than sure it will take a toll on us, going to class is good but that costs us a lot of time..we have to squeeze in studying time after a long 8 hour day. So not a big fan of mandatory attendance..then again i will wait and find out.
Also, just wanted to ask: any info on if the student housing has the option of not being furnished? And... anyone know about the laptops running on vista? Thanks!🙄
First off, thanks for putting together a great school!
Second, I believe there is some valid feeling that mandatory attendance be eliminated. Perhaps a student should attend a certain percentage of all lectures and all labs. However, having the streamed lectures is a major plus and would allow the students to cruise through things that each understands well and spend more time focused on areas of individual weakness.
Let me say that I personally am a class goer. I find that overall I learn more from beging in class. However, I also find that all of the classmates I have ever had learn things at different rates. Having some flexibility in deciding which lectures to attend and which to watch via streaming would be a very good option that would enable all students to find their personal groove.
Thanks for reading,
T
Technology is definetly important and will be a huge part of our lives while we practice medicine or while we are in clinical settings. However, I don't think technology will benefit us as much during our pre-clinical/basic sciences years. It's still nice to know that it is available to those who need it.
I hope anatomy will take full advantage of the technology dcom has to offer. Anatomy is probably the most visually challenging science course we will take. 3D models would be extremely helpful (virtual disection).
I also excited about the manicans (i hope i spelled it correctly). I also hope we get a Harvey since our stethoscope will probably be our most important and relied upon tool.
Since we are the first students in this school, I believe we will have a strong voice and that DCOM will take all of our considerations seriously.
Now what makes you think they're gonna read that. 😉
I'm feeling unloved at work...boss called me a Short-Timer for the first time today...
Heck, I've been in short-timer mode for about 2 years!
As can be seen so far in this thread, the tech that DCOM will be bringing is beyond notes. It is the SimMen they will have, the simulated birthing suite (if I remember correctly), recorded lectures so you can review sections when you need to, even when going thru rotations and you need to review the knee before a surgery or a case you saw regarding biochem, physio, etc. We will be utilizing the computer extensively, which is good b/c medicine is going that way. Soon charts (at every hospital) will be done on a tablet in the room, a patient's history will be excessable from anywhere in the world, and with the fancy steths, be able to record and download patients' heart and lung sounds and share them with profs and other collegues. I think that be using so much tech while learning about medicine will prepare us when we are finally practicing medicine.
Yeah, having a virtual dissection would be interesting, but I don't think it would ever replace the real thing. Virtual is great for practicing procedures and as supplemental to a cadaver, but in my opinion, could never substitute for the real thing - which every med student to be exposed to at least once. It is an amazing expereince 👍
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I never meant for a virtual dissection to replace real dissection. Just as a supplementary so we can get a better overall 3d pic of the body. I've seen programs which allow you to follow certain structures such as thoracic duct or abdominal aorta superior to inferior or vice versa so you can see it all diff cross-section views. This is something that cannot be done on cadavers.
an hour to knoxville is great!...i live in the suburbs of chicago and it usually takes me a hour to get downtown anyhow. I guess a hours drive to go have a nightlife is not bad at all. It's good that the town is dry...no temptations!I've been researching the whole area a little more today...
I literally cannot wait to live in this area. Within an hour of Knoxville is pretty much every outdoor recreation activity I love, or would like to try.
I'd like to move....today please.
Wine and beer, only 5 mins away, in the neighboring states... and Yuengling, a rarity in the south, is sold close by. The only thing is finding liquor stores close by and bars within the county itself. Not to sound like an alcoholic either, lol, but I have done some research...What's all this talk about a dry county?? 😱
Nobody mentioned that during my interview! Not to sound like an alcoholic or anything, but how far am I going to have to go for a bottle of cheap wine?![]()

Correct me if I'm wrong, but where Middlesboro, KY is located is a dry county, not Claiborne County, where Harrogate is located. You drinkers should be able to find your fix nearby.
lrobin, you can still get your education paid for, some of the local hospitals are already sending out letters that if you sign a contract with them to work there for a couple of years, they will pay for your schooling, I know it may not be exactly where you wanna live but hell its a free 200,000 dollars. Also, you can take out loans for while your in school and once you graduate you can submit everything to the NIH for a retroactive scholarship that will pay off your loans.
Per a couple of people we talked to while down there....
Middlesboro (Bell County, I think)=Dry
Harrogate (Claiborne Co., TN)=Beer, and that's it
Virginia=Beer and Wine
Knoxville=your destination for all things debauchery.
Hope this helps.
My house=beers and bbq on fall saturdays (I hope, just have to see)
Hey nascardoc, where in Chicago are you from?
South Suburbs - Tinley Park (next to Orland Park) a few minutes away from I-80 & I-294.
You're in Schumburg, right?
looks like i'll be at your place every fall saturday!
(if i get in)
yep..in schaumburg....wow we are almost at the opposite ends of metropolitan chicago.

Yes we are. The mall you guys have there (Woodfield I believe) is pretty good. They have a place called NASCAR Silicon Motor Speedway where you sit in a 1:2 scale replica of NASCAR racecars and race each other. It is a simulator, so it is a video game, but fun none-the-less. Orland Mall is good too, but smaller than Woodfield.
If you and a few of your buddies want to have a fun night out with a racing theme, I HIGHLY recommend a place in Buffalo Grove called Chicago Indoor Racing. It is an indoor karting track (not a go-kart, those are things you find at family fun centers - these are racing karts) where you get to speeds of about 35 mph and you get to wear a racing suit, helmet, and neck brace. It is so much fun, but it kicks your a$$ pretty good. My wife used to make fun of how tired my cousin and I used to get, then she tried it and found out what it was like. They have a restaurant and bar for your after racing pleasure. Good food too. Check it out...

Yes, I always spell schaumburg wrong, that damn "a"
Yep..it's woodfield mall...probably the largest mall in all of IL, however, I am jaded nowevery other mall seems like a strip mall to me now.
The NASCAR simulated driving is gone now! It used to be right outside of sears..it's been at least a year or so since its been gone!
However, we do have a GameWorks right there at Streets of Woodfield with nascar simulation.
Thanks for the tip on chicagoindoorracing. I'll definetly have to try it out.
*wipes tear from eye during moment of silence - sniff*
Perhaps if my undergrad institution would have had "mandatory" attendance, I would have fared much better! 🙂

LOL....i see that you're a fan of 24! awesome show!
Thanks! I interviewed on Feb 20th, but did not get my supplemental turned in until much later. I was lucky enough to get invited for an interview two days after turning in my AACOMAS, but left me little time to collect necessary letters of rec and prepare my supplemental. PS, I'm really not that big of a procrastinator, I was just volunteering in Africa until December, which slowed down the process.🙂if you don't mind me asking..when did you interview? Thanks
Congratulations on the acceptance!
Eyecon 82 Im not sure how to get ahold of the hospitals directly, I received letters from 2 area hospitals. I believe that the school provided them with our names and that each hospital will contact us individually. Im sure that more and more will be sending out letters as we get closer to our start and have a full class.
lrobin: Can't you call PCOM and tell them the situation? That would really stink to have to miss out on the scholarship if that is what you really want.
I talked to Paul Carney today and asked him what the time frame was looking like as far as them looking at the waitlist. He said the last interview would be on April 17th. After that if they still have seats avialable they will pull from the waitlist. We should start hearing from them around the end of April or beginning of May.

Believe me I tried. They will not give info over the phone -only snail mail 🙁 Aisha in admissions said she would try to get my letter out sooner, if possible. Really, my husband and I were talking this evening -if they aren't more respectful about something like a full scholarship, then maybe the student and their education is not priority. Which definately is not what we want! I really cannot imagine the people at DCOM being that way.
Thanks for the info about the hospitals, Slinkeyooo. I remember Dr. Leo mentioning something about that. I am going to look into post residency options tonight.🙂
Hello guys!!
I did interview on 16th March. Is there any fallow who was interviewed last week?
I wish all the luck to those who are waiting...and Congratulations!! to those who are accepted.
🙂
