Are there any Navy HSCP/HPSP candidates able to defer their active duty service upon graduating from dental school in order to go to civilian school residency programs? Although navy does offer postgraduate dental residency trainings, but the spots are limited. For example, 1 ortho/yr in navy. I think PASS, like the matching system for medicine, has a very strict rule that you could not reapply via PASS if you didn't take the matching offer the first time. Have anyone got pick up by a civilian residency program, but the Navy wouldn't let you go to that program ?

not sure bout navy, but AF is willing to let you defer if you come in with that specialty

Please correct me if I am wrong. The ortho residency program is a joined program between all three braches. There are only total of 5 spots for the program. 4 spots go to Navy and 1 spot is split between Air Force and Army for 2008. That doesn't make too much sense to me.
I recently talked to a Navy dental officer and he mentioned that it is hard to get an approval on deferment of active service. The reason is that many people who deferred their active duty service to attend civilian residency left Navy after they finished one tour. In addition, there is a shortage of general dentists in Navy currently.

There is an oral surgeon I know who got into a 6 year OMFS residency and was forced to do a 4 year residency because the Navy wouldn't allow him to attend a 6 year residency... But they did allow him to do his 4 year civilian residency and come in as an oral surgeon. He's very upset at the Navy for not letting him do a 6 year program and pretty bitter about where he's stationed...
