DMU - '05 (part 2) = all DMU topics here!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well I don't post here much, but here I go. Can any of you second year students give us first years any insight into this whole embryology mess? What should we concentrate on? The given objectives or read all the assigned readings? What is the test like? Like other students I think this is B.S. Oh well, if anyone can give some advice that would be great!

Go Hawkeyes

well, embryo was not one of my bright and shiney moments... but I'll give you what advice I can! Get a hold of a second year and see if you can get their embryo notes... hopefully that will save you some time from having to write it all out yourself. Also, if you can get a hold of the DO '03 embryo notes, the last year that he actually lectured, you can see what he stressed as being important. Beyond that, I simply wish you good luck! JP, most of the embryo notes that I gave you are notes from DO '03 that I went off of to study. Be a good boy and share if anyone wants to copy them.

If anyone's looking for a good movie to rent this weekend, check out "Duets." It is very good the whole way through with a great ending.

Sure 😀 If any first years want this just give me a tap on the shoulders when you see me and we can talk about it....

What's up with the introduction to Internal Medicine this noon?.... I thought I was going to learn more about what it is that an internal med doctor does and the options for specialty and things like that.... Instead I learned that the central theme to medicine is differential diagnosis. The entire time we were actually doing the case study.... Oh well....

hey everyone, i'm back..been studying..i know, that's no excuse..

in my 30 secs on sdn...

embryo sucks. i'm too worried about the biochem test that i havent even touched the book yet. hey jp, you wanna be a nice boy and share those notes with me??? 🙂

ok, back to studying...urrrr!

JP, hey I am partly in charge of arranging speakers for the internal med club, so if you have any ideas then I will listen to them. But honestly the only way anyone will ever know what IM is is to actually follow a few around, whjich by the way is an option for you through the Iowa Methodist IM program.

If it's anything like shadowing a physician, then - NO. That was boring, according to most of our class (I don't go until December). Give people a chance to breathe, and then they will start to look into clubs.

JP - notes for embryo - hook me up. But that does suck, since they are from a differen book altogether!

vietcong and kidT,

If you are both interested in the notes let me know when you want them next time we see each other.... quite honestly though, it's nothing at all like the emphasis Dr. Meetz want s this year.... Seems most of the notes are as foreign as the ones we're doing.... but if you still want them....

later....

Hey all! Enjoy life in Des Moines this weekend... I'm going to Denver!!!! Ha hahahahahaahahhahahahah...
I'm getting really sick of Iowa! Please help me stay sane. This whole place is really starting to bug me! Anyways, have fun studying biochem all weekend... I'll have a Coors for ya'll! he he

Did anyone else want to cry when they saw the list of hospitals that are going to be here on hospital day?

I have a question... what do I do if, when it comes time to match for our core programs, I don't like any of the choices I'm given? Actually, I'm being quite serious... what happens then... pick the one that is going to depress me the least? Aside from these hospital reps coming here and blowing smoke up our arses about how good their programs are, how are we supposed to find out which places are even decent? Am I supposed to go to Ohio on my own and visit five different hospitals and take a tour... advice please!!! Do any other DO '04's feel this way? Is there any way at all to possibly do all of my training at a large university based hospital? Even if I do find one and could set up every rotation I want with no problems, will DMU let me do it all there? Say for instance, I find a lot of DO's in Omaha that are affiliated through Creighton and UNMC and could do rotations with these Do's in all of our required areas of study, would it be possible to do my entire third and forth year there so that I don't have to move around every four months?

Desperately seeking wisdom from those who have already been through this process, Josh

Josh.... You seem distress about this entire rotation thing.... Just wanted to bump this up to the top for those who can give Josh advice regarding the matter.....

To my fellow classmates of Class of 2005, you folks missed out on a great opportunity this morning.... I highly recommend that next time that their's a running event that you folks go.

From a second year (AKA Macman, Ecto T) I learned sooooo much about future techniques we have yet to learn such as some Muscle Energy techiques for the lower body.... and guess what.... he allowed me to do it on him.... For that I will alway, ALWAYS be greatful to him. If you're reading this.... I thank you again....

Today's event just makes me more and more enthusiastic about OMM.... I can't wait to learn more techniques.... Later and good luck to the class of 05 who are reading this in your biochem exam....

After spending the weekend in Denver, I am seconding my own motion to move DMU to Denver or Colorado springs!!! OK, so I'm just sick of Iowa... and I miss scenery, and having stuff to do, and skiing, and...
Anyone with me on this one?

Are there any 3rd or 4th year DO students out there who can give us second year students some info on the different CORE hospitals... which ones are good? Bad? Who are good docs to rotate with... etc.
Also, I am looking to find some DO's or MD's to rotate with in either Omaha or Denver... anyone know any good docs in those areas?

Welcome back Josh....

I must be insane or something but I'm actually enjoying Des Moines.... 🙂 Then again, I'll probably change my mind in no time... naaaahhhh 😉

Woohoo.... Another Biochem test over.... WE just all have to move on and get ready for that imfamous Embryology Examination....

Small reminder for my fellow DMUers who read but do not post.... Remember there is a computer program set up that contains EMBRYOLOGY QUESTION BANK in the student network.... You all may want to check it out.... Later.... 😎

With my back to the class, I heard gasps of horror from the crowd. I felt like the Hunchback of DMU today.

But then Boesler worked his magic on me, and let me tell you something, IT WAS WORTH EVERY MINUTE OF IT - I FEEL LIKE A MILLION DOLLARS! WOO HOOO! 😀

As a new anatomy TA, I am looking forward to grilling you first years in the anatomy labs!
Just kidding, remember, I'm a nice guy!

Thank goodness you TA's are comin' in.... Some of us need major guidance.... So get your gluts in the lab and help us all....

Josh.... a nice guy???.... I don't know 😉 😀....

Just kiddin'.... He is nice!!!

Later y'all

This coming Monday from noon to 1PM, if any second year's see my carotids pulsating from across the room, my face turning various shades of red and purple, or see me twitching in my seat... please just knock me over the head and put me out of my misery!
Thank you, Josh

I'm venting my thoughts again....

Why is the white coat ceremony held a month after medical school officially started???

Many of my fellow colleagues are contemplating skipping the white coat ceremony so that they can study instead of attending a white coat ceremony in which we already have the white coat.... it'll just be put on us.... I think I can do that at home 😉

Anyway, here's a suggestion.... Why not have the ceremony during the weekend after orientation. All the students are still moving in and family members are probably with them already.... that saves mucho dinero for travelling here twice.... Another suggestion is to NOT give out the white coat till the actual ceremony.... Make it mandatory to attend or else not get your white coat....

I wonder if the administrative folks realize that these suggestions before.... We've gone through our first month as medical students already. Some of us are not as enthusiastic about the white coat because we are so bog down with thinking about Biochem, Embryo, Anatomy, etc....

Maybe DMU should really think about when they place that white coat ceremony at....

Anyway.... Just takin' a break before watching the Embryology lecture from Temple University.... which really helps you haven't started studyin' yet....

isc.temple.edu/marino/embryo/defaulthold.htm

There it is for those interested....

Later, 😎

JP, they have the white coat ceremony so that they can take your picture and sell it to you! 😀 😉
Now, stop your bitchin! Just kidding, I've been doing a lot of my own venting lately.

It's just another fun weekend of all cardio for me... going a little stir-crazy here. And people wonder why many doctors have such wierd personalities... because we lock ouselves in our apartments all the time and have no one to talk to but ourselves. Yes, I am my own best friend too.

hey jp,

those embryo sites actually are very helpful, esp the temple site..its now 3 am on sunday morning and i'm still studying embryo..i am so pathetic!

the white coat ceremony today was a total waste of time, since it distracted me from studying and somehow i ended up at a bar downtown for a few extra hours drinking and playing pool..i agree with jp on having the white coat ceremony closer to orientation so that we're not so bogged down with other things and while parents and families are still in town. i'm glad that my family didnt come for the ceremony because i dont have time to entertain them all weekend, with this embryo exam coming up and me being 5 chapters behind (am i the only one behind in everything??)..and plus, i didnt see it as such an important or special event anyways.

i would also like to personally thank Dr. Marino for actually teaching me embryo..it's good to actually hear a human voice going through the concepts. and whats this bs that the class mean on the last years embryo exam was in the 90s??? every second year i talk to says low 70s!..meaning that dr. meetz's estimation is off by approximately 20%!! and him telling us that we shouldnt believe anything that second years tell us because people who take the class dont remember..josh, what do you have to say abou that? dr meetz is telling us that 2nd years are the most uncredible sources for us to get info on anything.

~10 second year students words vs. dr. meetz's word...who do i believe?? should i study my arse off to pass or should i get a general idea of whats going on in those little monsters called embryos? if he asks questions like, what is a zygote?, i can handle it..right now i dont know how it's going to be.. i just want to get an 80 and i'll be happy..

well, back to class with dr marino, my 10 min break is over..take care everyone.

First years, us (now) second years got the exact same speech from dr meetz... about how self-study is all good and the grades were good.. blah blah blah. I know for a fact that I got a 75% on the first anatomy test which is all embryo. I remember the class average being about 71-72% but other classmates of mine remember it being about 68%. Basically, it sucks but there is nothing you can do about it now just study whatyou can and get it done with. I know that isn't comforting, but I don't want to blow smoke up your arse and tell you everythings going to be OK. Embryo is the only course that we had that was self study so at least you won't have to do it this way again.
I agree with you guys that the white-coat ceremony should be held the first weekend after orientation... basically before you become apathetic towards everything outside of class and realize what you've gotten yourself into.

I'm glad I'm not alone in my opinion(s) 😀

I'm up late too doing embryo.... This bites!!!

See ya'll tomorrow 😎

OK, with the first month of school out of the way, the match process is starting to emerge. Say I choose to do my hospital core rotation at hospital X in MI, which is in the North-central northern division and my clinical core rotations in Des Moines, which is in the central-southern bi-coastal division of area 4. Well if My MI spot is taken, then I have to do it in OH, in the southern-eastern north west division, and my IA site then gets moved to to the southern yucatan peninsula. If I lose the OH site, then I play a blind choice round robin tennis game to get a site in Minot, ND. Then if no clear winner is determined, we will hold a two-man sack race on consecutive sundays until a winner is determined. Yeah, that makes sense.
I think I need to go break something!!!

Is anyone else as frustrated about this as I am???

Yes I am too. I am pretty much so pissed that I could bite nails in-two. I really liked the answer to the question posed today about if it takes 5 years to get a core hospital site set up and the school has been here 100 years then what is the problem? My answer would be:
A. certain people are too lazy to do something about it.
B. Hospitals do not fit how the people in charge or the people in charge have some quam with the hosp.
C. The people in charge are closed minded and want to play the isolationist game instead of spreading osteopathy out of the Tower and Des Moines Gen.
D. All of the above.

Please give your answer in the next Reply.

Well Ryan, you and I are very much in agreement. Congrats on SSP by the way. I am very glad that whoever it was asked why we don't have more sites in des moines... it seems absolutely crazy to me that I may end up in Minot, ND to do core.... can you say transfer? I am very much starting to understand a lot of the frustration that recent DMU grads have towards DMU. By the way, I talked with one of these recent DMU grads about Bi-county... he said it is aweful!!! Henry Ford is great he said, but unfortunately, you spend most of your time at bi-county.
Are DO schools the only ones who require you to move around for your third and forth years? This is definately one area where MD schools have a distinct advantage over DO schools... they are usually assoiated with large university-based hospitals and you can elect to do outside rotations if you desire but otherwise you can stay put for the full four years.
Regarding the administration... well, I'm going to cut myself short here.
I "heard" that DMU was invited to send students to Iowa Methodist (the one good teaching hospital here in des moines that of course DMU is not associated with) but DMU was unwilling to pay the price to send students there. Very dissapointing as I have worked with many of the docs there and can say that they really have their **** together over there... its our loss, not theirs.
Here's another problem, how are we supposed to know if we want to rotate through somewhere when we don't know anything about it. Did you notice today, Hoff mentioned that there are resources at the library that tell you about the hospital (demographics and meaningless BS) BUT, there are no student evaluations of these paces?! Gee, I wonder why?
Sorry for all of the negativity and griping but I am (as previosly stated) beyond frustration with this whole situation. I honestly can't think of any way that they could possibly make things more confusing or rediculous.

Why did you have to tell me that about Methodist/Lutheran. Are you trying to piss me off more. I have heard the same thing I think. Like I said someone at DMU either did not want to put forth the effort, or they want to be stubborn and stuck on their ways. Hell I will pay a few extra buck to go to there, I mean heck they raise our tution to put an ad in Time Mag. and then misspell and word so why not! So how do things look for you then. What area or places are you interested in?

Holy sh*#! You guys see video of the world trade center after that plane went through it? CRAZY!!!
Ryan, I only mentioned Iowa Methodist to further my point... I'm already pissed off, so everyone elso should be too! 😀 😱
The thing that really chaps my arse is that I know more than enough DO's in every specialty at Creighton, UNMC, and in Denver that I could set up every one of my rotations with these doctors who have already invited me to spend time with them. And these are all at large teaching hospitals. So, If we are paying $25K to set up our own rotations, find out all of this info on our own... I guess I'd rather just take the money and pay the programs that I want to go to to take me on as a student instead of having to move somewhere I have no desire to live at. I'd be working under DO's more than 50% of the time... AAUUGGHHHH!!!

Hoooollllyyyy SSHHHIII#$$$$$.... Is anyone else watching this???? A SECOND plane just crashed into the other world trade center building!!!!!!!

Gotta go watch TV now...

If Bush does not attack with vengance then it will enhance the fact that he and we (Americans) are a bunch of soft bellied pusses. Some really sad **** we have going on here. My roomate and I are in awe and are boycoting the cardio heart sounds test today. Maybe this will finally make us revaluate our wide open borders in which we let every living thing in our country. I have said forever that we should set up a border that entails 1st a nationwide moat, next a wall of fire and then razor wire behind that. I mean **** we cannot even control the southern border and now they sneak in through Canada. Can you say LOCK DOWN! I am damn glad that the FAA has shut down the airways. If someone is dumb enough to be lolly gaging around in the air now then blow them out of the frickin' sky! Hell sign me up I am ready to take vengance on whoever and every group that claims responsibility for this massacre my fellow brothers will be avenged.

And just who do you suppose President Bush should attack?

I am glad that those in the military know their jobs.

you.
whoever wants to claim responsibility. Duh!
Or would you like to take the pacifistic approach?

Everyone pray for the world. There's some crazy **** going on. ~266 people killed so far in this madness. My litte brother enlisted in active duty 3 weeks ago and he's shipping off to basic training tomorrow after this happens. WWIII is just beginning. Pray for the world and for this chaos to end quickly. Back to embryo..

I agree about the sick arabs celebrating, but just remember when you venture out that not all non-caucasian people are the same. I am sure most people here a rational, but in times of BS tragedy like this we can all lose our senses. Nevertheless let vengance be carried out to anyone and every group that claims responsibility with total and ultimate reprecussions. Maybe again "a sleeping giant has been awoken" again as in Dec. 7 1941.

Well, we've been looking for a good reason to get rid of our nukes... 😀

I want nothing less than absolute resolve!

Yeah, right. Me the pacifist. Actually I am an active reservist and have 10 years of active duty as well. In fact I just got a call to put me on alert in case I need be called.

My point is that we can't just go out and extract revenge. At this point I doubt anyone really knows who is responsible. Give it some time. I have some faith in our military. (Tempered with realism.)

Also talked to my parents tonight. They live in the DC area, just a couple miles from the Pentagon. One of my mother's concerns is for the innocent. Apparently an Arab taxi driver was pulled from his car and beaten tonight (Fairfax County, VA.) Do you really suppose this individual was responsible? I doubt it. Tempers flaring do not do us any good, and may do much harm.

Keep all the innocents in your thoughts.

I have a relative in Fairfax County, VA who is a doctor working overnight at the hospital helping those who were injured at the scene, and he's Arabic.

Do you think it would have been a benefit to the nation to randomly beat him up? As an arab, do you think that I CONDONE such terrible acts of violence? Of course not. If arabs are to blame, then I'm shocked, horrified, and ashamed. But before you guys start calling for blood, I think you should realize that there are many, many arabs who side with you - that this was completely ATROCIOUS. Don't put us all in a group and pull the trigger yet. Retribution is INDEED called for, and should punish those responsible, not those coincidental.

On an embryological note, if our beloved teacher thinks we are responsible enough to study ourselves for this exam, then we should be responsible enough to report our own grades. Bah, just grumpy ramblings.

Kid, I don't think that anyone here is saying who did it, but that who ever DID do it should be punished with karmic retribution. So is the FBI swarming on Detroit like they did in '93 after the first world trade tower bombing?
It is very unfortunate that many people jump the gun and start blaming certain groups... especially when it comes to something like this.
Who ever did this is an idiot, because I hope that when we find them, they will be severely punished.

I don't know about swarming. Detroit is a ghost town and will be so until Thursday. There's a Federal building and some buildings of the big three (GM/Ford/Etc) is rumored to have weapons underneath them. The word is that if they decide to run a plane into the big three buildings, there will be more than just debris flying around.

Right next to Detroit is the city of Dearborn - Dearborn has the highest concentration of Arabs outside of the middle east. Rumor has it that there have been random Arab beatings in Dearborn, which scares me because if it can happen in a city that has signs written in arabic at public schools, it can happen anywhere.

You want the truth? I'm scared ****less.

hey efs! you obviously are blind. Did you not read my post. I specifically said that we should not go out and seek out revenge on people of different colors and nationalities. Duh! Yeah that would really be something to be proud of now wouldn't it. I hope that we learned from our mistakes with the Japanese people after Pearl Harbor.

I posted that before and will repeat it again. I am not for going out and beating people over this. However you should all know that in a war there are almost always civilian deaths. Listen I could not give a bent dick what religion whoever is responsible (even though I think that they are as odd as hell). The point is that from this point on everyone who threatens the US should die. We are a bunch of pussys! Taking **** from everyone. I mean for ****s sake this Bin Laden character apparently is involved in the 93 bonbing, then Kenya and S. Africa, then the USS Cole. Can someone get their thumbs out of their ass@s and kill this bastard? So in recap. Threat = Death

Besides Kidterrific if I want to beat you down I will just beat you down because you are you. 🙂

Here is my take on the current situation. There is no reason for anyone here to worry that the US won't retaliate. The latest reports are estimating that as many as 800 or more people died at the pentagon alone (likely mostly military lives). Bush will have numerous generals literally begging for the opportunity to seek brutal punishment, and I firmly believe he will let them. I do hope that they take their time in doing this to make sure that they properly investigate that they are stomping the right group(s)/country(s). I also hope that when they do take action that they do so in such a way so that one morning I will wake up and turn on the TV and be more astonished at what the US has done to retaliate against these freaks than I was when I woke up this morning to see a god damn airliner flying through a 110 story building which would eventually collapse. To do this will take some planning, but we desperately need to make an enormous example out of these people.

One of my concerns that is not being addressed currently (as far as I am aware) on the news is the possibility of these same criminals using biological chemicals. If they take a plane and dump the right chemicals over New York, it could make today's incident pale in comparison. They wouldn't even have to hijack anything. They could rent their own plane and simply dump the chemicals. We wouldn't have any warning of an attack of this nature even after it has been committed until thousands of people start dieing (and then it is likely to late). Obviously today they wanted to make a statement by both killing large numbers of americans and also taking out targets which have sentimental meaning to the US and world. If their objective should in the future turn to simply killing as many americans as possible, I think that biological weapons pose a critical danger.

I agree with you ryan. The US has tried to be politically correct for too long. Too many US people are getting killed now. Its time to bite instead of bark. We are also going to have to face up to the fact that innocent people are going to die when we retaliate against today's attacks. I am ok with that as long as there is a clear reason as to why it had to happen and as long as our primary target isn't the innocent. If you have to kill some to save many, then by all means do it. Today was unacceptable.

Hey guys,
Can you tell me how far it is to Ames. My wife would go to university there (IA State) if I went to DMU. Is it a brutal commute or not so bad? THanks.

Ames is not far. 25-35 minutes if that.
Nice to see you back Hank.
By the way Jamie I am looking for you tommorrow 🙂
I honestly cannot sleep. I am still waiting on a call from my Big Brother from my fraternity who works for JP Morgan, but I do not know where he worked. I doubt it is in the (old) WTB since it was mainly an executive bld'ing.

ryanpj
hey efs! you obviously are blind. Did you not read my post. I specifically said that we should not go out and seek out revenge on people of different colors and nationalities. Duh! Yeah that would really be something to be proud of now wouldn't it.
I was not just refering to the post directly above my response.

If someone is dumb enough to be lolly gaging around in the air now then blow them out of the frickin' sky! Hell sign me up I am ready to take vengance on whoever

This certainly does not sound like restraint.

No offense Kid, but right now I don't think I'd feel to comfortable wlking around right now either if I was Arabic... but I got your back bro.
The U.S.'s response to these attacks has to be so brutal, destructive, and precise that those who wish us harm, will hesitate to do so. We need to let the entire world know that those who hurt us will be killed, and their families, friends, and anyone who helps them in their causes. We need to strike fear into those who wish us harm. We have sat back for much too long and have left ourselves too open to these attacks.

I agree with you JSDMU, if I were Jamie I would feel leary and uncomfortable too. It is kinda sad that it is going to be that way for a while I expect. Although I cannot not tell Jamie is arabic. When he first told me I thought he was giving me a bunch of BS, but then he gracefully pointed out, "can't you see my big shnaze?" I laughed.

to the terrorists, "May God have mercy on you, because we will not." -Sen. John McCane

It has been proposed that because of the way that the buildings collapsed, that most of the people were all driven into the basement levels of the buildings. I can't even imagine the cry for vengence that will go out when we finally reach these levels and start recovering the thousands of bodies.
