DMU - '05 (part 2) = all DMU topics here!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If anybody is looking for a place close to school I know somebody who is stuck with 1 month left on their lease - August. It's at Windsor Terrace, right across the street from school, and the landlady has.. issues and won't let the lease be broken. She doesn't realize that in September when she'll have that apt vacant there won't be anybody looking for apartments. If you're interested, let me know & I'll put you in contact with the person.

This may be the last time I'll be replying to SDN because after I log off today, I'll be calling AOL to disconnect my free online... Oh well...

Anyway, I'm glad I met folks on SDN and I'll see y'all this orientation....

KidT or jsdmu, mind calling me if there's going to be some sort of get together next week.... Thanks....

With that... Peace out....

$#@&$@#&$ IOWA DRIVERS!!!!!! I nearly got broadsided twice within five minutes while driving today!!! All Iowa drivers licenses should be revoked immediately until they can learn how to drive!

Good news on the surgery residency program... I spoke with them today and Mercy is going to cover the costs for this year regardless of the HCFA federal funding. Dr. Reed and Dr. Teitelbaum meet with the HCFA layers over the weekend and the HCFA funding for the program should be completed this week sometime. On top of this, Mercy may be expanding the residency from 8 positions to 12 within the very near future. 😀

I went to do some school physicals today... BORING!!! 🙁

IT's not my last day after all....

After calling AOL and telling them I have yet to start med school they gave me another.... yes folks.... another FREE MONTH!!! 😀

They said I should try them out just in case I don't like the dial up networking for DMU.... Anywayzzz.....

Do I have to give up my Iowa license plate.... I should have kept my California one 😉

Dang.. I thought we were going to get rid of you Popoy! 😡

fisgig, if you don't like our thread, then don't visit it! You and amisoone can go hang out together! 😀

I sure hope that that was sarcasm. Po is the shiznit!

Yup.... there's a few Popoy haters here 😀

fisgig & yigit are just a few trying to get rid of me.... Just when they thought they'd get rid of me.... Hey... Blame AOL 😀

Maybe I should start a hit list 😉

You'd think with fisgig's experience he/she would be nicer.... his/her profile states he/she was an RN as an occupation and I know I saw his/her post somewhere else regarding havin' taken COMLEX and USMLE.... I guess some people are plain old rude....

Ya'll who aint here in IA be missin out on the Polk County Calf Competition... I entered my heffer in the competition! 😀 😉

True dat Popoy, some people are just playa haters! Are you going to try MSN next month, or who is the next free acsess provider?

I'm going away this weekend but I'll be back Monday and Tuesday if anyone wants to hook up.

Izlam, I got the notes... thank you.

Yes, i'm being sarcastic....popoy's cool....infinite wisdom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel a lot of hate from you.... Were you breast feed? 😉

I was wondering if anyone has tried going to the DMU website.... www.dmu.edu

For some reason or another, I can't seem to access it. What's up with the DMU computer/website folks?

DMU Family,

I've been posting little and lurking lots mostly due to time but I've decided to accept at MSUCOM and release my DMU spot.

When they first called me I nearly told them no since it's so very late to line up a house purchase, I really like Des Moines and the ALL the people I met at DMU, PLUS I lost ~2000 by backing out of the house I was about to sign on in Des Moines! I really reflected and I've made the MSU switch.

Some of us will likely cross paths in the future and it will be fun to reflect on the experiences we've created with all the DMU posts.

Best of luck to all of you.

Get ready for the academic onslaught in just a few short DAYS!

Dave

Well, well Dave.... Congratulations....Thanks or sharing that with us.

I was looking forward to meeting you this orientation but I guess that's no longer the case.... Maybe we can meet as colleagues someday.

Good luck and hope things will go well for you and your family at MSUCOM....

Don't worry, I'm sure the finances will solve itself down the line....

Come back and say hi to us from time to time....

Later dude, 😎

SWDave, sorry to be losing you but I sincerely hope that your years at MSU are very fruitful. I'm sure we will bump into each other one day in the future. Good luck and feel free to drop a note in our thread whenever you want. I know a lot of docs that work at Ingham medical center in Lansing and they are great people... enjoy your time in Lansing.

Joshua Smith ([email protected])

PS: I also hope that you soon come to realize that the Big Ten (MSU) is the only real football conference! 😉

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Not a Big 10 post!!!

Hey, I LOVE football. ER I mean I LOVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL. So I will easily move into being a Spartan BUT I'll still represent for the Sun Devils, Huskers and Cougars.

I'll certainly post up occassionally to see what's up.

Later,

Dave

Hello fellow DMU people!

We will be in Des Moines next Wednesday evening (25th). If any of you want to get together, as we talked about earlier, let me know. I'm off tonight, so I'll check back frequently.

How about Christophers at 7:00 ??

If we have a big enough group, will we have to make a reservation?

Let me know if this works for anyone.

t-bone

Count me in....

For now, I don't believe my wife and I have plans.... If anything, I'll swing by and say hello 😀

Not so unfortunately, I am leaving for San Fran Wednesday afternoon. Hope you guys have fun though. That, and, I hope its got AC for Popoy!

Hot and Muggy.... No AC.... Very thirsty.... Very hot....

Josh, I thought you left already? Maybe not....

Popoy, I'm going back to omaha saturday and will be back monday. Then wednesday I leave for san Fran.

PO, you spending a lot of time in front of the fridge with the freezer door open? You will be this weekend... 93 this Sat and 94 this Sunday.... and humid of course! 😉

Yes, that thought have crossed my mind 😀 But I think I'll spend the weekend at the mall or somethin' to get away from this heat.... 🙂

Safe drivin'.... 'frisco (SF) is cold according to my family.... So you might want to bring a couple of extra clothing for warmth....

I need to do some shopping before school starts. Are jeans appropriate for med school or should I buy more "professional" looking clothes?

t-bone,

One thing I notice around DMU was that no one seems to follow the "dress code." That is, I see people with jeans, shorts, t-shirts, sweat pants, sweat shirts, tank tops, etc.

From what I gather, jeans are appropriate.... I'm not sure exactly how much of the dress code they're actually going to adhere to or how much they're going to enforce it this coming year....

😎

While we're talking about clothing.... What exactly are we suppose to wear for all three days of orientation.... That is, do we have to be semi formal?

If it's still hot, I was planning on wearing short and a t-shirt during one of the days.... The second day, I'll wear something nicer seeing we have picture taking for ID and contact info thing.... How about the first and second?

I don't want to be over dress or underdressed....

I plan to wear nice clothes all through orientation. Hey, the photo sticks with you for 4 years!

In class, though, I plan to dress casual, as usual. I'm not a snazzy-dress type gal on most occasions.

Here's to a good year and good classmates! 😀

See you Wednesday! (No one else has said they will be a Christopher's on Wednesday night. So, Popoy, it looks like is just you, your wife, and us!

See you then!

t-bone (and hubby)

I'm pretty sure that KidT will be going.... He's not a frequent visitor lately because he's moving for good this Monday to DSM (Des Moines).... but I'll let him speak for himself....

Popoy:

Two things:

Would you get the word out about Wednesday! If you know any other people (05s, 04s or any others) that might want to stop by, please let them know!

Also: I will be wearing my DMU shirt. We are old farts--34 years old! So we will be easy to spot! What do you look like?

See you soon 😀

t-bone

I pretty much know KidT (05) and jsdmu (04).... I know of a couple of '04's but I heard they've moved so I can't get a hold of them.... I think most '04s are off on vacation. So I think it'll be hard to get a hold of any of them....

I'm sure you won't have trouble spotting me 😀 Look for a 5'8" Pilipino with glasses and fuzzzzzzy hair.... Can't miss me 🙂

I'll try my best to get a hold of KidT....

I'll see you then.... 😎

ATTENTION DMU students....

COME TO CHRISTOPHER's on Wednesday July 25, 2001 at 7:00pm!!!

😎

Popoy will be there if he doesn't sweat to death first! Dude, give in and get some AC... its not even funny how hot and humid it is out here right now. Maybe I'll let you hang in my apartment when I go to san fran 😀

T-bone, sorry I can't meet you this time around but I'm sure Popoy will introduce me to you at orientation.

Never give up, never give in 😀

Our apartment is unusually pretty cool.... Thank goodness

YOOOHOOO!!!! We're off the the malls, shops, markets, bookstore etc.... You know the best part?.... THEY HAVE AC!!!!YEEE HEEE!!! 😉

t-bone

I just spoke to KidT on the phone and he said you can count him in on Wednesday.....

Alrighty.... We'll see you then.... Have a safe drive over....

😀

t-bone,.... did you get my post?

I have one small request.... can we kindly choose the non-smoking section, if there's a designation????? 😕

Popoy

Thanks. I got your post and non-smoking is my preferred section too. See you Wednesday

t-bone

Hey soon-to-be-first-years! Just a suggestion, dress comfy during orientation... its long boring for the most part. Only dress up on picture day. So dress casual.... you don't need to impress anyone yet!

---Josh

Thanks t-bone.... 😀

I don't mind people smoking... it's just that I want to minimize it.... 😉

----------------------------------------

jsdmu,

Thanks for the tip.... I'm really thinking shorts on the first day 😀 Nice semi-formal the second... then back to comfy shorts or baggy pants... we'll see what mood I am in 😀

-----------------------------------------

To the DMUer's that I met tonight (You know who you were 😉).... It was a pleasure meeting you all and hope we can meet up again sometime.... 😎

Hi--I have been reading your postings for the last month and thought I should introduce myself since I will be there in the fall.

T-bone, did I read correctly that you have a music major? It is nice to hear there is another one.

Is there anyone else coming from Washington state?

Talk to you later.

Hi zorb,

Nice to meet ya.... WOW!!! another music major.... Talk about being well rounded....

Glad you can say hi.... I'll see you during orientation...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In other news, there was a tornado warning today in Des Moines today. Actually there was a report of a tornada touch down, but it was weak.... Geez the weather here sure is tempermental.... Those sirens are deafening!!!

So what more exciting weather is a Californian up against.... I'm sure I'll see some pretty nasty winter wonderland 😉

Zorb - if this is who I think it is - we've got your apt all decked out! That and you'll probably have enough groceries for your first week or so. We're not sure how to work out something so the plants don't die though.

Hello, fellow DMU students. I'll be joining you as a member of the Class of 2005 in just a short while. I can't make it to Christopher's tomorrow night to meet a few of you, so I wanted to send a post out to introduce myself before orientation.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all in early August.

Hi Thunder!!!

Congrats on your acceptance to DMU and look forward to see you at the orientation....

Enjoy the rest of the time your off and hope your move here is a safe and easy one....

That's the ticket.... Anyone else out there going to join us for Class of 2005? Come in and say hi and we can keep this forum as a source of communication among our class members.... besides that, this is a nice place to bicker about before we see it in the Innominate 😉

jeez, everyones coming out of the woodworks!

Anyone catch CBS nightly news tonight? Apparently the criminals in Detroit have gotten bored with murder and car-jacking... the newest thing is "garage-jacking." Yes, they are trying to steal peoples garages now! What a great city!

zorb
Welcome and congratulations! Yea, I really am a music major. Piano's my instrument--what's your's?

Thunder,
Welcome and congratulations to you too. I look forward to meeting you.

t-bone

Hey all! I have been sorta ease-dropping on your conversations and decided to join in! I am not officially a DMU student... well, yet... maybe. Here's the deal. I have a housing deposit and money into CCOM and just today, DMU called to tell me I have been accepted. I have until noon tomorrow to decide. Please... anyone who has insight... help me out. I am thrilled to have more than one offer, but both are great schools. How do you decide???

Hi there Rugger.... I'm hoping that TDurden (AKA Erin) would answer this one... I met with him and KidT a couple of nights ago and he decided on DMU over CCOM.... That's a tough decision.

You might want to consider how you'd feel about relocating to Iowa. Look at the programs and which one is more established and which has more of an affiliation. How do you feel about losing your deposits for CCOM?

This decision is solely on you.... I'm just trying to ask question (I'm sure you've already ask) and just throwing it out there for thought....

The only thing I can give is my perspective on what I've experience so far.... I've got to tell you I've met the most nicest students at DMU. One of the biggest reasons I chose DMU is the welcoming atmosphere aside from being more established, curriculum (systems), etc.

Let us know what you decide on doing....

Does anyone else have feedback regarding choosing DMU over CCOM or vice versa? (Erin this is all you man.... Help this person out)

Best wishes.... Good luck

7pm TONIGHT AT Christopher's!!!

Just a gentle reminder 😉

Hello again! I only have a week left in NY. The warmer weather came with a vengance. Thanks JP for the info on the book. I'll have to look it up when I get home. I haven't really been thinking about orientation, it is coming up fast. I am a bit anxious about having to move into my apartment in the dead heat you guys have been having. I hope I don't melt my TV. Enjoy Christophers...order the Mozerella sticks, they are good. (that is if I'm thinking of the right resteraunt).

RUGGER!!!

It may be too late but I had a similar dilemma and yes it was a tough choice (real tough.) I had been accepted at CCOM and went to my DMU interview in a "whatever" fasion. I knew the school was good but I also knew I had nothing too lose, or so I thought. By the end of the interview I had changed my mind, or at least had a new perspective. After a lot of diliberation I chose DMU- here's why. first, cost of living is cheaper, not a real big deal in the long run but something to consider, those loans would stetch a bit further here and allow me to get a beer once in a while 🙂 more importantly for me were the classes and the structure. I thought that a systems based approach would be the best for me. this was a huge part of my decision to go to DMU. for me personally, I think I will learn more this way and I think it will be a great advantage going into the boards and rotations. The other reasons I decided DMU were the things I had heard about it. I had always heard that CCOM was a great school and that it produced great physicians, but when other students and Physicians who knew about DMU talked about DMU to me they always had glowing reviews. I'm not talking just about Docs and students who attend or have attended DMU but others as well. I even know 2 docs who went to CCOM and had really great things to say about all the docs they know went to DMU. Maybe I should put it this way, when I put together all the things people had to say about DMU, the impression I was left with was that DMU students enter their rotations and residencies often having a bit of a leg up on other students both MD and DO. I think this is a combination of the faculty and the way they teach at DMU and the fact that many students travel to many different parts of the country to do their rotations. From what I understand the students often get to perform more tasks and see how medicine is practiced in different areas because they aren't as confined to one area i.e Chicago or a big university setting where they may be used more as cheap labor and do more than their share of scutwork. As I said before I gathered this info from physicians and students both related and not related to DMU, so take it as you will, but in the end I felt that I would recieve the best education and would have the most oppurtunity by attending DMU
