You can rent a car in Iowa as long as your 21. I rented a car there from enterprise when I interviewed and it was only $25 a day...they said they were going to charge me $10/day extra for being under 25, but then they waived it. Just thought that you'd like to know...it may be useful during the time that you're looking for a car.

yep, i basically called windsor terrace and secured an apartment. i went into it totally blind, but i had heard great things about it from other classmates that i wasn't too worried.

my mom and i rented a van and drove out here. it wasn't that bad. got to see a lot of the country in the process. so, you can surmise that i don't have a lot of furniture--just the basics (couch and bed). brought my clothes and little other things out in the van.

anyone know any good areas in des moines? i'm checking through the apartment listings (winsor terrace and imperial to name a few) and most are complexes. man i'm old.
 
Small note to everyone as I am takin' my Board break.... Mark and to everyone.....Try to live close by because of constructions on campus and on Grand Avenue.... parking will be a headache and traffic as well... you don't want to be worrying about that stuff when you're dealing with exams and such....

Eric, AKA eschauberger, Just wanted to state that you have to do what's best for you because if you're unhappy then your relationship will be too.... No matter what you decide to do. As for MSU's prosections, most medical schools are moving towards that direction (Fortunately or unfortunately) but as you said you'd rather dissect.... I think Jane has the idea.... There's more to the situation than meets the eye and I'm sure there are more questions than there are answers. Overall, though, if I'm reading your thread correctly, you seem to have more pros coming to DMU than going to MSU..... Good luck with your decision.... Let us know how things go.

Thanks for the tip about rental cars!! I didn't know that! Hehe, I guess if you're willing to pay, they'd do anything. But it's cool that you got the fee waived. That will definitely come in handy when I'm car shopping.

Actually, a road trip does sound pretty fun! I've been discussing my move with my parents, and we decided not to go with a moving company. Instead, I'll ship a few boxes of my stuff via UPS, and then rent some basic pieces of furniture when I get there. I called 3000 Grand today, because they advertise furnished units in their ads. But they charge extra, and the lady basically told me it would be cheaper to rent furniture from somebody else. $600 for a studio, with no furniture, is just too expensive. I just don't want the hassle of moving everything again in two years. I'm definitely going to check out Windsor Terrace when I'm in town!


JP or Katie, when are the boards? Do you guys get study time built into your class schedule? Good luck with studying!

I think most of us are looking at the same places around campus (Windsor, Imperial, 3000 Grand, etc). What do you mean that most of them are complexes? (And 27 is not old, by any means 😀 )

Jane, I was out your way today. Darci and I dorve down to Ikea to look at some furnateure for me. I wanted to eyeball the desk and the screen that I will be ordering form them. Man that place is huge!

27 is not old marc. I'm going to be 25 in sept. I think that most of the people on this board are probabally looking at Windsor Terrece, or Impereal. I was thinking about doing 3000 grand studio.

Yeah Ikea is HUGE. Good thing they have that loading zone in front because I would hate to cart everything through that big parking lot. I could spend a week in that store and not be bored!

Congrats on getting the AZCOM interview!! :clap: Are you gonna go?? I actually have one scheduled for Drexel in two weeks, but I'm sure that it's for a waitlist spot. Besides, how can Philly compare to Des Moines?? :laugh:
Seriously though, I don't want to go through the hassle of finding out where I'm moving to in July. But any excuse to take off from work is great for me! And I've never seen Philly. Drexel was one of the applications that I was too lazy to withdraw, and I didn't think they'd interview me. Ah well.

Anyway, I want to go to Ikea too!! I'll just be too tempted to buy too many things. 😀

Hello everyone. As some of you know I'm planning on going to DMU. But yesterday something came up. I got an accpetance at Ponce School of Medicine. This is an accredited school in Puerto Rico. I was set on going to DMU, but now I don't know.

Do you guys think that the education in both schools differ that much? Will I get better residency opportunities going the MD route? What should I do? I don't even know where to start.

If you guys could give me an insight, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Congrats on your acceptance to Ponce! If I were in your situation, I would stay in the US. For me, the whole MD/DO thing is a non-issue. Not that I'm ignorant to the problems and stigmas that DOs still face, but I really feel that if I'm going to be a good doctor, I'm going to be a good doctor no matter what. My good friend has a brother who went to St. George's after failing to get accepted during the first time he applied. He didn't want to be a DO either. I don't know how SGU compares to Ponce, but here's his experience. He felt so great about SGU the first two years, and even better when he was able to rotate at Highland (in Oakland, CA), places in NY, etc. But then, come time for residency, he didn't match. He ranked 10 places. I forgot what specialty, but he didn't scramble into anything either. I don't know what he's doing now, as he graduated a year ago. But of course, there are plenty of FMGs who are quite successful and who will make awesome doctors.

As for me, I've been waitlisted at a couple of allo schools, had an acceptance to one, have an interview coming up, and I withdrew many of my apps after I made up my mind to go to DMU. I'm basing my decision on the school itself. DMU is a medical school that happens to be osteopathic, the others happen to be allopathic. I'm sure there are people who specifically seek out osteopathic schools, but to me, med school is med school, and I'm going to try to get the most out of wherever I'm going and whatever degree I get.

This is just my opinion. There are so many things that you need to consider, because you need to go somewhere where you are comfortable. There's nothing worse than having to study when you're miserable.

Tristan, congrats on your accepctence to DMU and Ponce. While I dont know too much about too much about residency placement issiues regarding MD vs DO. I do know that you can do any thing you want to do with either degree. II'd just go to the place that you felt the most comfortable at. Good luck with your choice.

What are you doing for spring break? I'm so jealous...I want a week off too!

I'm going to the interview. I want to see Philly, I want a cheesesteak, and I definitely want that day off work! It's more like a mini-vacation! I'm gonna take it easy, because there's no pressure to get in, and I'm almost certain that I'll be waitlisted first. From what my friend has told me after interviewing there a few months ago, and I know that I agree with him on most things, I probably won't like it there as much as I like DMU. Not that Drexel is not a good school. Just a location thing, mainly.

I wish Ponce was a Foreign Medical School so I wouldn't have to go through all this, but it's not. It's part of the AAMC and can be found in the MSAR. Believe me, if it was a foreign school it wouldn't even be an issue.

Right now I really need to wait for my state school's decision to worry about this. I'll find out this week if I get into Utah.

The cost is as much as DMU. Housing cost are just about the same, maybe a little cheaper.

You know, I interviewed in Salt Lake City. There was a Ponce grad working at a Utah hospital and they set up the interview for me. I told them that I couldn't afford to visit Puerto Rico and they were nice enough to set up this interview.

The doctor was really nice. He actually had me change into scrubs, and then we visited with a few patients. After that, he interviewed me for an hour and a half, wearing scrubs. The interview was amazing.

Anyway, if any of you have more advice or opinion, feel free to comment. I appreciate them.
 
So I just read in the Preosteo column that the chance of getting DMU for both 3rd and 4th are zero? Anyone comment about this? Do they give preference if you have a good reason to stay around? Maybe I should email Becky in admissions and ask her too.

Somebody made a thread about that in the Osteo forum. There were a few replies (JP was one of them) who said it is in fact possible to stay in Des Moines. I'll search and bump it up for you. I had the impression that it was difficult to do so, too, but it is possible.

Boards are for TWO DAYS!!! June 3 and 4. We don't have study time scheduled in but we do have a whopping 2 weeks off 🙄 ....

Busy day for you folks.... Decisions and congratulations at hand. You all will soon find out that each medical school has their problems and DMU is not an exception but the norm.

Attend where you want to attend, go where you want to go.... because in the end, and if you still have doubts, you will never be happy if you force yourself to go to a place for the sole purpose of being their.... and attaining whatever initial goes after your name. (Just my 2 cents)

If Ponce is the place for you, tristan, then you should go there. I would most certainly ask the students at that school if they feel the same weight as the FMGs.... Yes, although they are a part of the AAMC they may be viewed as FMGs because they are a completely different country - but it just so happened that they are a "territory" of the United States of America.... You have to keep in mind, the last I check.... there are still only 50 states. I'm not here to scare you but to tell you to ask their students, staff, and faculty and you'll find your answers. If you have a hard time getting answers that in itself maybe answer about the quality of their school....

Staying at Des Moines (DSM) is possible but hard to attain.... you're gonna have to scramble to schedule everything in to make sure you stick around.... but to this date, I have met 20+ students in person (and know of others) that had the opportunity to stick around DSM during their 3rd and 4th year.... But, like life itself, remember it's not guaranteed.... There will always be a handful of people that won't match in DSM during the first round of matches.... and sometimes those are the ones you hear from complaining the most.... Like in most medical schools, we have the silent majority and the loud minority when it comes to issues pertaining to school.

I just had a revelation.... I think that I will start posting some of the stuff I'm studyin' for boards.... not only to help me but to get y'all newcomers a taste of what your up against....

This way, y'all know I'm still around... 😛

Here goes....

QUESTIONS
1) If the patient presents with Pseudomembranous colitis (*yellow plagues on the colon).... What microorganism does this patient have?
2) Patient is a 35 year old female presenting with subcutaneous and lymphocutaneous lesions. During your history and physical, you find that this patient has a fondness for rose gardening. What would you suspect as the microorganism responsible for her lesions?
3) Patient comes to your office complaining of a wart-like lesion in his perianal area. Because of your fine education at DMU, you realize that you were looking at a condylomata lata and mucous membrane lesions.... you also note that it is highly infectious. You later found out that this patient is very sexually active and at that point you realize that you were dealing with what microorganism? What disease are we describing?





ANSWERS
1) Clostridium difficile, gram +, rod, one of two of the spore forming organism you have to know of boards.... It's anaerobic as well and you treat it with metronidazole (Metronidazole can be used for any anaerobic organism)

2) Sporothrix schenskii, a fungi found in plant materials world wide often associated with rose gardening. Treatment: potassium iodide in milk

3) Treponema pallidum, spirochete, sexually transmitted causes syphillis.... our patient actually has Secondary Syphillis. Treat with Benzathine penicillin.

Fourth cup, ehhhh..... yikes....😱

Summer break doesn't start after boards.... unfortunately, but it does settle down. We also have an Intro to Clinical medicine before we go off to rotations.... So we won't be out till end of June or begin July.... sorry I don't have my schedule with me.

There are a couple of 3 bedrooms but that's hard to come by.... I would suggest calling the landlords...

I suggest also looking into townhouses or condos. There are a few on Grand.... I think the address is 3990 or 3660.... I typically see it when I'm jogging around. Some of the profs actually live there.

I would also look at places in west des Moines as they probably have more choices.... you're just gonna have to commute (which is not far) if you chose to live there....

Anyone else have any suggestions?

I didn't notice any 3 bdrms as I was browsing, and surely not any with W/D hookups in the unit. Maybe farther from campus, like JP said. I'll keep an eye out!

Just wanted to make sure Eric if you had recently see the thread.... I commented on it...

This is pretty much what I said: People are relying on old information.... Recently, our 3rd and 4th years are happy with what they got. Consider this there are70+ spots in Iowa for 200 students.... But y'all have to realize that 44 of us go directly to Ohio and 50+ to Michigan and 10-20 others to PA, NJ, FL, etc.... These people want to go to these places and not Iowa. It comes about a 70% chance of staying in Des Moines, if you really wanted to.... Some people just rely on old information and don't bother asking about updates.... so it amazes me that "prettymean' posted that when this person has no clue as to what's really going on at DMU and relies heavy on old posting and heresay.

TodayI have been extended an offer to interview at DWU this May and am very pleased with the prospect. Also, I see that many people here are from CA. My question is this: what about DMU has made you choose it over Pomona?

Further, I have applied to NJDM COM, VCOM, PCOM, KCOM, four schools in Irland as well as my two home schools in South Carolina. I am very intrested in DMU for surgery. An OD here at MUSC that I work with in neuroscience is a DMU grad. and really wants me to go there.

What can you tell me about it. How is life there? I live in Charleston and have been a beach-bumb a long time. Also, I know a little about New Port and Lagona---so I have an idea of what W/COMP would be like, but I know nothing about the Mid-West. Please give me all the input you can.😕 😎

I have a quick question for some 1st and 2nd years at DMU. I have an opportunity to get some free text books through a guy at my work. I was wondering what are some of the required texts that you have really felt you needed (or because i'm getting them for free) just good books to have. I know that if you sign up for SOMA you can get a free anatomy book, so i'm not worried about that. But are they any others that you really liked or just some that are required. Specifially any osteopathic or histology texts...but any information about books would be greatly appreciated.

Are you asking about W/D in each apartment unit? Or a laundry room that shared by all the tenants in the entire complex? Because I think most places have a common laundry facility, but hardly any have W/D hookups in each apartment.

California rocks, but only in certain places :laugh: . I didn't like the area where COMP is, as opposed to where the other 9 or 10 med schools in CA are. Same goes for Touro. I also liked DMU's long history. What else...I want to try living somewhere other than CA and have always wanted to live in the midwest. I don't think I specifically thought "I don't want to go to COMP"; I just thought "I really want to go to DMU".

What do you mean that you're interested in DMU for surgery? Because "Surgery" is in the name? You can probably go into that anywhere you go, as long as you work hard.

What schools are you really trying to choose between? (i.e. where have you been accepted and of those, where are you seriously considering?)

DMU is definitely not for everyone. People here are friendly including staff and faculty. We're very well prepared to go out into practice. As you said we do have a strong surgery department.....

I didn't chose to go to Pomona as they have a high failure rate and doesn't really encourage a "community" atmosphere. I felt it was competitively driven. Location was not a good selling point either for Western Univ.

Just visit the schools and if you feel right about it and you like what you see, I suggest going there.

Come here during your interview and interview us.... and see if you like it. We're judging you as much as you're judging us.

Answer: Broca's Aphasia is the Dx (diagnosis). Broca's speech area is located in the left hemisphere 44, 45. The Middle Cerebral Artery supplies that area of the brain.

Jenny, what a wonderful question to ask....

Here's my opinion as a second year student.
1) Robbin's Pathology
2) Netter's Anatomy (It's actually AMSA not SOMA)
3) A medical dictionary, I suggest Stedman's Dictionary
4) Harrison's Internal Medicine
(The above is a must have throughout your career)

Osteopathic
5) Foundations of Osteopathy (you don't necessarily have to have but is really the main reference for all Osteopathic stuff)
6) Gevitz's The DO: Osteopathic Medicine in America
(Otherwise, you just need to buy the class handout and you're set.)

Histology
7) Wheater's Atlas of Histology

If you have specifics just ask away....

Question: Looking at an ECG, a CONSTANT PR interval with random dropped QRS Complexes. You realize that this is a medical emergency and you call your attending.... What do you tell your attending?

Answer: A defect in His-Purkinje system.... It's a Second Degree Heart Block; Mobitz type 2.... It's uncommon but you know it's a much dangerous than Mobitz 1.... But you also remember that this can be a pacemaker issue.

I am from a small town, grew-up in the country, have been to two very fine schools, have lived in the city and roughted it as a guide in the outdoors for two years. I am very open trust me. I just hope DMU is too. All I needed to know is that I was correct about the surg. dept and that the schools tract record was good.😀

I guess I had just hope against hope that COMP was better than I thought. I will really get homesick for the beach.
 
We're very open here too.... That's what we pride our school to be..... IT's a friendly and cooperative environment.

I'm not saying that COMP is bad.... I think its a good school like all other schools but every school has its pros and cons and when the cons don't fits one personallity such as when I was choosing schools... then you decide not go to that school and go to the other....

In a Lineweaver Burk Plot, how are you able to differentiate between Competitive and Non competitive inhibition? This is both a Biochemistry and Pharmacology question....

Answer: Competitive Inhibition you get an increase in Km and a constant Vm. Noncompetitive inhibition you get a decrease in Vm and a constant Km.
 
Well---to me it makes perfect sense. I have not known anyone who graduated from there in the last twenty years so you are being a big help.

I found out that I didn't get in to my state school today. I guess the blow wasn't that hard. I expected it to be worse. In any case now I really have to decide between DMU and Ponce.

I've been thinking about the whole DO vs. MD issue. And you know what, it's really not about that. I guess it's about being in a place where I know I need to be. After thinking about the kind of education I'll get, it's pretty much a toss up. Med school is med school. It's going to be hard no matter where you go. I guess the question is, where do I need to be?

By the way, if you have anymore insights, feel free to comment. I really appreciate it. If you guys are sick of my writing about this, I'll say sorry in advance.

I guess at this point it really is your decision. You're right, all that matters now is where you feel you need to be. Since you didn't visit the Ponce campus, maybe you can look into its location some more? I'm imagining it to be a nice-looking campus.

What field of medicine are you thinking of going into?

I'm interested in Surgery or ER. I don't know if those areas are really competitive, but I guess it doesn't really matter. It will depend on the grades and board scores.

I think I'll take your advice. I'm gonna save up and go to Puerto Rico to see how I feel while I'm there. I'll also take some time to talk to the students. I want to get a feel for their own view of the school.

I'll do some thinking tonight and decide tomorrow. Thanks for all your help.

Answer: It the violet hue/color on the vagina due to increased vascularity and/or hyperemia. The violet hue of the vaginal tissues and a softening of the uterus. Used to be the only way doctors would be able to tell if the patient was pregnant.... We've come a long way 😉
 
I was browsing the DMU website, because of the emails that have been sent from Sharon, and I came across this alumni list . Just found it quite interesting, and definitely encouraging. 🙂
 
So, I gotta grind an axe a little. Ok, first let me say that I'm very happy that I got accepted at DMU, and when I'm writing this post I'm not trying to brag or be self pride--it was just a string of events that happened that sort-of were annoying and I figure I'd dispense for no particular reason.

Because my girlfriend and I are trying to do the Vet and Med at the same time. She at Iowa State (she's out of state) and me at DMU, or both of us at Michigan State (I'm out-of-state, or possibility that we both get off the wait list at Wisconsin (she's out of state), we have a real financial concern. Especially because she will not make that much coming out of school (starting salary for vets is around $45k). Anyway, I was just curious about any of the scholarships at Des Moines since we are going to be heading into ($55k/year + living *4) some $300k of debt. So, I chatted with Becky in admissions for a bit (this was months ago) and found out that I would be an excellent candidate for one of the scholarships because I did well on the MCAT and am strong throughout my application but the committee that decides this stuff disqualified me because my GPA is 3 hundreths of a point too low (that's 0.03). Those are some pretty expensive points!!--especially since I'm taking all of these advance genetics and biochemistry courses for the past two years and go to a reputable school (Iowa State). I would have filled up on Underwater Basket Weaving courses if I would have known! Not that I would have gotten any scholarship, but geez!! Come on. Ok, I do know they need to set boundaries and stuff.

Ok, done grinding that axe. Now resuming my normal self. Oh, I did find out that I won some Senior Leadership Award yesterday. That's cool.

I missed the GPA cutoff too! Same situation as you (reputable school, tons of heavy-study classes). I had all the other reqs besides the GPA. But seriously, 0.03 is totally negligible! 🙁

Anyway, I think you'll be making about the same amount of money as your gf during residency. (Vet school is 4 years, right?) And you can choose the kind of loan repayment where it's dependent on your income so that makes things a little easier. So between the two of you, it doesn't look so gloomy. You guys are saving money by living together (possibly) and sharing a lot of expenses. I'll be almost $200K in debt, as opposed to $150K for each of you. Not that there would be a big difference in repayment for either of us, but you know, it could be worse!

I know that there are many scholarships available after our first year. JP mentioned these once, but the info is buried deep somewhere in this 30 page long thread. There should be more info on them once we start. So don't lose hope, you just might get a full ride for last three years!

And YAY! Tomorrow is FRIDAY...:clap:
 
Scholarship issues.... that always comes up every year.... 🙂

Not that I'm making excuses for DMU but I do know that they can only budget in an "x" amount of dinero to give away.... thus the pickyness (is that even a word?) of the way they judge applicants.... If I was in your position, I too would go 'what gives?'.... Y'all have the right to be somewhat upset....

Look on the bright side.... you're still going to medical school when thousands and thousands of applicants don't 😉

I do know that. When I look at the situation I do know that I AM A VERY LUCKYSTAR (he he he) to even have been accepted. She did tell me that it has happened that a person showed up to orientation and got it. I should be able to get my GPA over that hump this semester (20 credits this semester). They only had one left about 2 months ago--so it could be gone by now. I also did send a copy of the letter I received for this award to the Admissions Office to see if I could add to my stock a bit and show that I didn't "drop the ball" as soon as I got accepted--like some of my other med bound friends (as soon as they got in--they only work to just pass classes <---SAD!!)

Well, Katie and I wont be living together until possibly our 3 or 4th year. We aren't planning on getting married yet, and cohabitating is something that we don't look highly on--we are Christians. I think that I would probably live near campus and then if we got married, moved to Ankeny or something. Des Moines Commuter Buses go that far North and it's about 25 min from Ames (where Iowa State is). Any DMU students know of anyone in this situation?

I did start finding a couple jobs both in Lansing and in Des Moines, so I'm gonna start following those to see what comes out. We have about 10 days to decide.

umm, i hate to tell you this, but pomona is now way near the beach. we are talking about at least an hour long drive (depending on traffic) to get to l.a. and then more time to get to the beaches like santa monica and venice. new port beach and laguna niegel are in orange county, by irvine and anaheim while pomona is on the border of la county and san bernardino county. if you want to go to comp to be a "beach bum", then i think you might want to reconsider your thinking. but above all, go to your interviews, talk with the students and get a feel for where you think you would be most comfortable.

Geee, didn't realize that the drive to the beach was so far. It looks alot closer at a glance.😱

Also, I would say that being a beach bumb would be an option after school starts. I was thinking, however, that if it were close i could go there from time to time to escape.😀

DMU is sounding better by the post.:clap:
