What is the Tower?

I know that it's the large clinic on campus, but who works there? DMU affiliated staff? What is the patient load and population like? Do students do any rotations there?

Prad? Leighton? Rick? What are you guys up to? 🙂

Tower = Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center (AKA: The Tower Clinic) - the shape like a spine 😉

All clinicians associate w/COMS, PA/PT offices, classrooms, staff and student, MHA/MPH students and classrooms, Division of Health Management, Clinical Academic Office, OMM Department and offices, Outpatient Surgery, Podiatry clinic, Surgery Academic Department.

Patient population: It's in the thousands.... I know I always see charts and charts and charts.... so I'm sure they get a fair amount of patients. But it's not as large as a hospital, of course.

Yes, COMS, CPMS, PA, PT do rotations at the Tower.

Factoid: (I'm studyin' for my test on Monday)
- 90-95% of breast cancers are detected with screening mammography
- Most common cancer in 45-55 yr female is BREAST CANCER
- Breast Cancer is NOT a dz of the elderly
- 1 of 8 women will get breast cancer
- Incidence increases w/age and risk factors
- Annual Exam start at age 40.... monthly self exam at that point as well.
- Progression of breast cancer: Benigh hypetrophy --> Ductal Carcinoma --> Invasive Breast Cancer
- Fine needle biopsy is still used but is not as accurate/precise as a needle biopsy.

JP,

What test do you have on Monday?

I have another question, what does the Surgery Academic Department cover?

Is it warming up in DSM yet? 😀

Hey guys, long time no talk!!!

JP how's the studying for the boards going? Jane what's happening with you these days?

Valmont, docsw is right COMP in nowhere near the beach, and not only that it's in a really ****ty neighborhood. While I'm sure that COMP is a fine school it just was'nt for me. I did'nt like the feel I got there. I've been able to visit that school 4 times (all paid for by my school) and every time I was there I was just very uncomfortable...just my 2 cents.

Oh yeah if you guys have time watch Bend it like Bachman. I loved that movie. Ok so maby it had to do with the fact that I'm Indian (with the dot, not the feathers), but I could relate.😀

OH MY GOSH!!! I was gonna ask about Bend it like beckham!!!! I'm watching it tomorrow!!! What a coincidence!

what can I say great minds think alike😉 My dad always said the measure of a smart person is how much they agree with you.

What are you up to Jane?

Valmont! Dude, I have to bust your balls here... DO, not OD. If you go to COM&S We might have to tatoo that on your hand so you sign your name correctly😛

 I hardly see any foreign films, so I'm pretty excited about this.

I'm listening to my friend's sob story. She just broke up with her bf of 3 years. 🙁

What are you up to? I hope your computer isn't giving you any more problems.

 I was thinking something on the lines of that...but hey, I'm nice! I like OD's though. Can't live without them! (I have horrible eyes)

My comp sucks!!! I'm not on mine right now. Yikes 3 years is a long time. Got any jucy details?

Oh yeah I'm not going to AZCOM. They only gave me a weeks notice, and besides I really like DMU. The only interview I'd consider going to is NYCOM's. I really like their Anatomy fellowship and besides I'd be able to hang out with another cousin(this one happens to be my best friend) of mine at NYMC.

I'm just busting his balls. You know me, I love to bust people balls.😀

I think you'll like it. You said you were asian, (ok I know that I might be steriotyping here) are you're parents really traditional? If they are then you'll be able to realte to it.

Oh, so you're going to be the official DMU 2007 ball buster. That's perfectly fine with me! I'll give you a list of balls to bust once we get started, ok? 😀

Nothing really juicy. The funny thing is, her biggest complaint was that the relationship was boring. So definitely nothing juicy there. I think.

Did you hear from NYCOM? I've also heard it's a good school. Well, I've heard good things about a lot of the DO schools! MSU-COM got rated #3 in this year's US News for medicine in primary care. MSU-CHM, the allopathic school, was #20 or something. Not like these rankings mean much, but MSU should be proud!!

I like DMU a whole lot. I'm so glad I found out about it, even if it was at almost the last minute. How many days are we down to until school starts?

Hmm...well, they're traditional in some ways, like, forcing me to study in a locked room with no music (ok, ok, so they didn't really do that...but it felt like it...😛 ) But I think they're more "Americanized" than a lot of other asian families that I know. They came to the US in the 70s from Hong Kong. I think I could relate to the movie, from what I've heard so far. Do the characters speak with a British accent? I love British accents...😍

Darn, nothing jucy. Did she break up with him or did he break up with her?

Official DMU ball buster, I think I like the sound of that. I accepct on one condition, I get a T-shirt saying I'm the official DMU ball buster.😀

As far as NYCOM goes they have no love for me. 🙁

I've not heard a thing.

If you like british accents, then you will fall in love many many times over. I like all accents. I'm a complete sap if I hear accents.

It was a complicated situation. She wanted to take a break, it turned out not to really be a break, and then she wanted to discuss the idea of breaking up, when he took it seriously, and so they're broken up. Yeah. Girls. So complicated.

Girls complicated, what an understatement. I wish you guys would come with an instruction manuel. To a guy take a break=break up.

Oh yeah 126 days untill school starts

126 days...*sigh*

Well, only about 60 days until I move to DSM!

Which part of India is your family from?

Well, Central Iowa was nice for a few days. I was sportin' shorts the past 3 days (75, 80 deg), then today... crap. 45 deg difference in one day--welcome to the midwest. I had to give a tour of the Biology Dept to some incoming students and had freezing rain pelting my face--ouch!

Monday's test is Obstetrics and Gynecology (Medical Specialty Module, Integrated Systems III)

Surgery Academic Department is primarily composed of Margine (Surgery, RN) and her administrative and assistant staff, there are also the clinicians which include Dr. Reed (DO, surgery) and his surgery fellows, etc.... What they cover is the Basic Surgical Skills laboratory. In your second year, you get trained to do all the cool stuff that surgeons do. You get certified and "licensed" to be able to help in the OR and close up sutures and operations.

DSM was.... emphasis on WASSSS.... warming up but yesterday a turn of event. It was there was hale (sp?), a bit of snow, and rain.... it was a mixture that was not a good mix. The ironic part is there was still a huge fire in one of the buildings in downtown.... go figure. But by next week again, it should go back up to upper 70s/lower 80s.

It's not really cold though.... just a bit nippy 😀

Puerperium = from delivery to 6 wks post partum when the body recovers from pregnancy and goes back to normal.

Board studying is going.... going.... going.... It's like the energizer bunny.... it keeps going and going and going.... I'm glad though that I'm in this position.... You'll be in our shoes some day, but when your in board studying.... it's really a pain the the tush to study and get it into your schedule.

Our instructors told us one thing.... every year thousands of applicants get rejected.... so we should appreciate that we are studying for boards b/c many people would love to be in our shoes.... so remember that we're all lucky to be here and that there are many shattered dreams out there....

Now... I'm gonna get off my soapbox....

Hey, Prad, glad you didn't chose AZCOM. I'm not sure if any of you saw that posting on an AZCOM survey. As a moderator of this site, I was contacted by AZCOM's administration to delete all those postings. Before I deleted it I took a glance at their survey. Let's just say DMU is far, far, far better than AZCOM.... The survey went so far as the students NOT recommending their friends to attend AZCOM!!! 😱

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prolactin falls at delivery, BUUUTTTT suckling of the baby triggers an increase in prolactin, stimulating an increase in milk production itself, and an increase of OXYTOCIN (Pitocin), causing milk letdown response.... the funny part is, a baby's cry will also trigger oxytocin release.... Women have no control over their breast milk 😀 That's the reason why leaking of the breast occurs w/o notice.

All this talk about "BALL BUSTING"..... I felt it was my duty as a second year to educate y'all about testicular pathology... 😀

Just be glad that you didn't get CRYPTOCHIDISM.

- Cryptochidism is the failure of one of BOTH 😱 of the testes to descend
- Increase incidence of germ cell testicular cancer
- Failure of descent leads to testicular atrophy and sterility....

.... in that case, atrophy of the testis = no ball busting 🙁 🙂

Later future docs... 😎

Jane, I'm from south india, from a state called Kerala. Beautifull place to visit. People are very nice and the coast and the mountians are beautifull.

JP why did AZCOM want the thread deleted. I mean if it were people oppinions of thier school then should it not have been allowed to keep going? If there are problems with a school the only way to fix them is to air thier dirty laundy. This way the school will be motivated to fix it rather then ignore it. Espically if it were on a site such as this where a lot of potential canidates would be able to view it and make informed decisions about their medial education?

PS Jane how did you like the movie? Talk to ya all later

The AZCOM survey was conducted by the student government and AZCOM administration. There were items in the survey that revealed issues that were "not publishable" and should stay within in the school.... The person that posted it "did not have the right to publicized such a survey."

I still have the website, but last I check they moved it too.... soo that means they really went to great lengths to control or put a blanket over this "scandal." Honestly though, if people saw what I saw.... they'd probably would all not decide to go there.... These are the kind of things I wish I can impart on students or prospectives on this site.

Looking at schools and seeing whether or not they would they would chose to ignore such issues.... It's all politics..... 😱

I just wanted to introduce myself and let you all know I'm going to DMU!! My name is Sarah, I'm 22yo.

I was wondering if anyone know how many spots are still left? I have a friend who applied and has an interview coming up...and really wants to know her chances and how full the class is already. When I interviewed (early march), there were 120 spots filled. Anyone have an update? Thanks.

Also, does anyone know of any apartments near campus that accept pets? Are there a lot of houses to rent?

Thanks
Sarah

What's up everyone!! I just wanted to say hi to everyone quickly (Prad, Jane, JP, Rick, Tristan, did I forget anyone?). I was trying to read some of the posts since I was last on here but there are too many so I will catch up later. I have been in hibernation in my freakin lab. I'm sooooooooo tired of that place, but my thesis is pretty much done!! Yay!! Alright, well I'll talk to everyone later, I have to get up early for drill in the morning and the time just jumped forward an hour 🙁 . Oh and what's up Sarah congrats on the DMU acceptance, welcome to the post. Later everyone, I'm out!

Congrats and welcome Sarah!!!

I'm sure we've met when you came here.... I'm a second year simply welcoming and answering peoples questions.... Hoping I'm a help of some sort.

When is your friend interviewing??? The reason I ask is, I'm a student interviewer and highly involved in admissions stuff.... So it all depends.... I had asked admissions a couple of days ago and they said they had 40+ positions left. Tell you friend to not lose hope. I have current classmates that interviewed up till end of April and beginning May.... So there is still a chance.... A small one but a chance nonetheless....

Please tell your friend to introduce herself to me when she comes for an interview....

As for apartments closeby that accept pets, you may end up having to look for apartments in West Des Moines.... I hate to say that but I do know of a first year that was looking for a place that allows pets but ended staying in West Des Moines b/c she couldn't find any.

West Des Moines is really not that far away. My only concern for you is that due to the construction you may have troubles parking.... You can try and come early, etc. to beat the parking rush....

Let me know if there is anything else I can answer.... even if it was asked already.... I know its hard to go back and look at all our postings.... so ASK AWAY!!!

BTW, I'm a Californian as well.... As of a couple of days ago.... Californias OUT NUMBER Iowans in the incoming class.... The first ever in the history of DMU!!! Way to go us CALIFORNIANS!!!

Later,
JP 😎 DO/MPH'05

Ohhh no.... You're right.... we lose a freakin' hour.... That's an hour less of studying.... yikes.... 😱 .... I better get back to studying....

QUESTION: How muchof the oxygen delivered tot he uterus is consumed by the placenta?

ANSWER: 50% - no wonder there's so much problems with pregnancy 😉 That placenta's sucking all the good air.... 😀

Prad,

The movie was SO good!! It was hilarious! The theater was packed. Great movie! And it didn't hurt that the coach (Joe) was dang hot! 😍
Do you think that Juliette(the blond girl) looks like Winona Ryder?

Sarah,

I can see what JP means about Californians at DMU! Which part are you from? I'm from San Francisco.

Leighton,

Congratulations on finishing your thesis!! I hope you get to see some scenery outside of your lab really soon!

Eric,

Thanks for the weather update! Sounds like Bay Area weather taken to the extreme! We have some big temperature jumps here too, but nothing like 45 degrees!

JP, keep grindin' on! The crash course on cryptochidism was a nice touch!

hey sarah,
congrats on your acceptance! i know that there are a couple of town houses that are next to campus, but i don't remember if they accept pets. if you have cats, i have a friend that lives at 3000 grand and she has two cats with her. if your pets are larger, i may have to agree with jp, west des moines may be your best bet.

leighton,
i'm hurt, you forgot me in your shout out! 😛 i'm just joking.

talk to you all later,
kimberlee 🙂

Kimberlee.... I haven't been around campus, so I'm sorry we haven't had the chance to meet up again for OMM.... Our last meeting wasn't as productive as I would have like it to be.... but nonetheless, thanks for the treatment....

😀

Test used for determining Fetomaternal Hemorrhage (FMH):
- Kleihauer-Betke (acid elution method) = quantitative
- Erythrocyte rosette = qualitative

Just in case y'all were reading the last parts to my postings.... I didn't clarify what FMH was....

FMH (Fetomaternal Hemorrhage)
- Fetal RBC detected in maternal circulation. Which may be due to multiple factors such as chorionic villi sampling, threatened miscarriage, ab truma, multiple pregnancy, fetal death, C section...

Hi everybody,

Are tornadoes something to be worried about in DSM? Or are they quite rare in the area around campus?

Kimberlee,
What are your plans for the summer?

Tornadoes are rare in this area.... although they can happen. During my first year, one touched down in West Des Moines and ruined an apartment complex where one of my classmate lived.

Also there was a tornado threat during my first year while we were attending CLUB day.... we went to the basement of the medical tower... that was an adventure.

WE have a loud blow horn that goes off every beginning of the month... it's extremely loud and right in front of the academic center.

But don't worry about it....

What?? No more factoids at the end of your posts?? Well, it's OK if you don't have time, but they were really great! Of course, most of the time, I had no idea about whatever you posted, but they were still fun to read! Thanks, JP!

😱 Guess who's quoted in May's issue of Shape magazine?
Steven Grekin, D.O, clinical professor of dermatology at DMU!
He talks about retinols.

Anyway, thought I'd share that with y'all...😀

Opps... I guess I forgot to post my little factoids....

I just finished my OB/GYN exam. YUCK!!! THat was a hard exam.... ohhh well, obladi, oblada life goes on.... 🙂

Here's something I completely forgot for the exam:

That's right, we're all attending a well known school!!! 🙂

I think I'll post this in the famous DO thread 🙂

Ricketsia ricketssia = Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.... One would think it's prevalent in the west seeing its ROCKY MOUNTAINS... but really it's prevalent in the Appalachian regions. I can't see why they just didn't name it APPALACHIAN SPOTTED FEVER 😀

Rick,

I got this brochure from 3000 Grand today, and they have two floorplans for 3bdrm/2ba units. They also have laundry rooms on each floor. Not the same as W/D hookup in each apartment, but more convenient than having to go all the way to the ground floor to do laundry 😀 I talked to them a few times over the phone, and they are demanding a full deposit from me. I tried to ask if it's refundable, but they just said that it would be if they didn't have an available apartment for me, and they weren't clear if it would be refunded if I didn't like the place. They really put on the pressure to get their apartments rented! I've gotten countless voicemails from them. They also want my loan information, which I don't have yet, for the application. Kind of a complicated process for this apartment.

How's everybody doing? 🙂

Just a small note,.... 3000 Grand has been hiking up their prices in order to somehow "kick out" the students. The owners are wanting the apartment complex exclusive to the older folks. That's a quote from a friend that lives there now.....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is the antimicrobial activity of clindamycin?
Gram positive cocci and most anaerobes

What is the antimicrobial activity of vancomycin?
S. Aureus, S. epidermidis, S. Pyogenes, other streptococci, pneumococci, enterococci, Corynebacterium, and C. difficile

That would explain some of the things I've experienced with them. The first time I called, I was told that it was still really early to look for a place. When I returned a voicemail from them the next day, a different person told me that I was running out of time and that I would be cutting it close if I didn't put down a deposit ASAP. 🙄

JP, do you have any exams left before boards?

10 more exams!!!! Pretty much every Monday and the rest is scattered.... Last day for classes before board break is May 16. we then only have 2 weeks off....

Hang on for the ride of your life.... this is a life long studying.... 🙂

Hey Popy (or anyone else),
This question originates from a suggestion you gave on a forum concerning studying in medical school. You mentioned the best idea would be to begin studying a board review book while you were taking classes. My question is which board review book are you using, and can you think of any others that would be helpful?

Thanks
JJ

Hey guys whats new?

Jane I'm glad you liked the movie. Julliett does kinda look like wynona but I think that julliett is way cuter. What kind of prices are they quoteing you for 3000 Grand? about 2.5 more weeks till I head down to DSM.

Keep studying hard JP.

Prad! What's up?

The quotes from 3000 Grand are:
$550-650 for a studio, depending on the floor and view,
$750+ for 1 bdrms

Application fee is $25, plus a $300 deposit (would be more for a 1 bdrm)

I think I remember the rent for a parking space in the garage to be $75.

Have you called them?

~J

😀 I have another car question...

Is ABS (anti-lock brake system) essential for driving in the snow? Or is it something that's nice to have, but not totally necessary? I've decided on a 1999 Camry, and the only option that I'm looking for is the ABS. Unfortunately, that really narrows down the list and there's not much to choose from. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I'm not an automotive expert, but what I know and have heard is the smaller the car, the less the need of ABS. A smaller car would presumeable have less mass, and less momentum so sliding on break would be less (does that make sense?).

I have a Dodge Neon without ABS and have done pretty well. However, I'm from Wisconsin and have grown up in Snow, Ice and anything else Mothernature could possible throw at ya.

This part of Iowa does seem to get a lot of sleet (2 days ago was a good example--we went from 75 deg and sun to 30 deg and snow in two days).

I would focus on finding a good car, but if finding one with ABS makes it a ton harder then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

-=Eric

ABS is NOT, I repeat NOT, essential for snow.... It may be nice to have but no matter how fancy your brakes are and it's still ICY on the roads, you'll still slide like the rest of them.... I have a Toyota Corolla and she handles fine without ABS.

I'm been told by a very close Iowan friend that you simply have to get use to driving in snow and for the most part.... pumping your breaks is the best to go instead of ABS.... or so I've been told.

Having been from Cali and my only experience in snow is slush from the Sierras.... and having been able to drive around in snow for two years now in Iowa, you just get use to it. You may slide here and there but not much.

For the most parts, the major roads and highways are absolutely cleared before you even drive on them. If there is a bit of snow, my sound advice is drive slow.... everyone in Iowa does anyone, so you'll blend in quite nicely. And on a more serious note, everyone expects driving to be slower in tough winter weather.

I was scare as a cat about driving in snow for the first time, but it's really pretty much like driving normally except a few slides and slow turns....

I have more to share when y'all get here 🙂

Otherwise, you don't have to have ABS, it's nice to have but not necessary, as you put it.

What do you get if you have a couple of doctors???

A paradox!!! (get it a pair of docs 😀 )

Thought I'd insert a humor here to celebrate my finishing 3 exhausting papers for my MPH!!! I'm free from my MPH till this summer!!! 🙂
